TODAY’S GOSPEL MESSAGE Sunday, August 13th
Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
“He said, ‘Come.’ Peter got out of the boat and began to walk on the water toward Jesus” (Matthew 14:29).
“When you hear Jesus calling, do you respond immediately and trust that He knows what He’s doing? If so, you are walking on water! When we say ‘yes’ to Jesus, we feel the power of his presence in our lives. We can feel the freedom it gives us! Listen to how Jesus is calling you to live the extraordinary life He has in mind for you.” Source: “Stewardship Bulletin Reflections.” Archdiocese of Newark Call to Stewardship (Summer 2017).
“Let us see the Divine Will of our God in all that happens to us. Let us delight in God’s good pleasure which bestows on us with an incomprehensible love both prosperity and adversity. Let us realize that all that happens to us, great and small, is a gift from God’s hand. Then let us praise God’s goodness to us.”
– St. Jane Frances de Chantal

Are You Being Called to Spiritual Direction?
Spiritual Direction encourages us to explore a closer relationship with God. In the midst of a busy life, many of us find it difficult to notice God’s action in our daily affairs. Yet, at the deepest level, all of us long for a more conscious experience of God’s presence and love. It’s really not about being directed. Rather, it is very much about being encouraged to draw closer to God.
Spiritual Direction is carried out in the context of a one-to-one trusting and confidential relationship. The spiritual director is trained to be a guide who journeys with you and listens to your story with an ear for the movement of the Holy Spirit.
If you think that spiritual direction might be a way for you to discern God’s actions in your life, please contact Deacon Lex at [email protected] or 201-568-6819.
What are you doing this fall? Mount Carmel offers an Adult Spirituality Group (Deacon Lex), Women’s Sharing Group (Sr. Regina) and Mount Carmel
Book Club (fr. Dan). These groups will return in the fall. Start-up dates will be announced shortly. See future bulletins for details.

WEEKLY RUNDOWN
St. Maximilian Kolbe Feast Day: August 14th
Maximilian Kolbe was born on January 8, 1894 in Poland. Kolbe's life was strongly influenced in 1906 by a childhood vision of the Virgin Mary. “He later described this incident: That night I asked the Mother of God what was to become of me. Then she came to me holding two crowns, one white, the other red. She asked me if I was willing to accept either of these crowns. The white one meant that I should persevere in purity, and the red that I should become a martyr. I said that I would accept them both.”
Maximilian Kolbe was ordained a priest in 1918. After the outbreak of World War II, he set up a temporary hospital at the monastery where he lived. Anti-Nazi writings were published through the monastery. He was, among others, arrested and subjected to violent harassment as a prisoner at Auschwitz. When the deputy camp commander ordered that 10 prisoners be starved so that they would not escape, one of them cried out, ‘My wife! My children!’ Maximilian Kolbe volunteered to take the place of that prisoner. He outlived the other nine prisoners and was later killed by lethal injection. Pope John Paul II canonized Maximilian Kolbe a saint on October 10, 1982.

Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary
Holy Day of Obligation: August 15th
“This solemnity celebrates the bodily taking up of the Blessed Virgin Mary into heaven at the end of her earthly life. This doctrine was dogmatically defined in 1950 by Pope Pius XII, but accounts of the assumption of Mary into heaven survive in apocryphal narratives from the third and fourth centuries. Celebrated as early as the fifth century, this feast became official in the ninth century, with the additions of a vigil and octave feast. May we offer our praise and thanks for Christ’s promise that we too will be received into God’s paradise.”

Please join us for one of our holy day Masses on Tuesday, August 15th. Mass times are 8:30 AM, 12 Noon and 7 PM.
“God Can Change Any Situation
Let us not be closed to the newness that God wants to bring into our lives! Are we often weary, disheartened, and
sad? Do we feel weighed down by our sins? Do we think that we won’t be able to cope? Let us not close our hearts; let us not lose confidence; let us never give up. There are no situations which God cannot change; there is no sin which he cannot forgive if only we open ourselves to him.” Source: Pope Francis Speaks to Our Hearts: Words of Challenge and Hope.
