FAITH LESSONS FROM THE SUPER BOWL

It is Super Bowl Sunday, which now seems to have turned into an unofficial American Holiday. Even though the Eagles are not playing many of you will be watching. Families plan Super Bowl parties, some people tune in just to watch the commercials and the half time show, and of course there is the game, the Rams and the (once again) the Patriots. In an attempt to bring faith lessons into modern culture, I prepared some faith lessons we can find in the Super Bowl.

First, the Rams and the Patriots had a goal when they started training camp last summer: the goal of winning the Super Bowl. As Catholic Christians, you also have a goal, the goal of enjoying eternal life forever with the Trinity. Do you live your life with that goal in mind? Do you live your life with the realization that your life on earth will someday end? We do not know when, but all of us will one day face the Judgement of Christ! Not the Super Bowl, but eternal life with Our Lord must be our ultimate goal in life.

Secondly, to reach the Super Bowl the football players must be in excellent shape. They trained hard to attain their goal. We too need to train hard to reach our goal. Not by running and lifting weights, but by paying attention to the basics of our faith. For example, do you set aside some time to pray every day? Is weekly Mass a priority for you and your family? When was the last time you experienced the mercy of God in the Sacrament of Reconciliation? Prayer and the Sacraments help you to stay in good spiritual shape to reach your goal of heaven.

The final item faith lesson is that it takes a total team effort to win the Super Bowl. Offense, defense, special teams, and coaches all working together. The Church is the same, because as St. Paul teaches, all of us make up the Body of Christ and we all have different gifts to contribute for the good of the team of the Church, and locally, here in our Parish. As your pastor I cannot do this alone. My brother priests and deacons and all of you, our faithful parishioners, contribute to the success of our parish as we help each other reach the goal of eternal life. Like a good football team, we need each other to succeed. Your time, talents, and treasure, along with your sacrifices and love, help to build the Kingdom of God in our community. All of you are MVPs. (Most Valuable Parishioners!) Enjoy the game, and next year we hope to see the Eagles make a return appearance.

LECCIONES DE FE DEL SUPER BOWL

Es el domingo del Super Bowl, al parecer ahora se ha convertido en una festividad estadounidense no oficial. Aunque los Eagles no estén jugando, muchos de ustedes lo estarán viendo. Las familias planean fiestas del Super Bowl, algunas personas sintonizan solo para ver los anuncios de publicidad y el medio tiempo, y por supuesto está el juego, los Rams (Carneros) y (una vez más) los Patriotas. Un intento para traer lecciones de fe a la cultura moderna, preparé algunas lecciones de fe que podemos encontrar en el Super Bowl.

Primero, los Rams (Carneros) y los Patriotas el verano pasado cuando comenzaron el campamento de entrenamiento tenían un objetivo: el objetivo de ganar el Super Bowl. Como católicos cristianos, también tenemos una meta, la meta de disfrutar la vida eterna para siempre con la santísima Trinidad. ¿Viven su vida con ese objetivo en mente? ¿Viven su vida conel entendimiento que tu vida en la tierra algún día terminará? ¡No sabemos cuándo, pero todos nosotros algún día enfrentaremos el Juicio de Cristo! No el Super Bowl, sino la vida eterna con Nuestro Señor este debe ser nuestro objetivo final en la vida. En segundo lugar, para llegar al Super Bowl, los jugadores de fútbol deben estar en excelente estado. Se entrenaron duro para lograr su objetivo. Nosotros también necesitamos entrenar duro para alcanzar nuestra meta. No corriendo o levantando pesas, sino prestando atención a los conceptos básicos de nuestra fe. Por ejemplo, ¿separas un tiempo para orar todos los días? ¿Es la misa semanal tienes una prioridad para ti y tu familia? ¿Cuándo fue la última vez que experimentaron la misericordia de Dios en el Sacramento de la Reconciliación? La oración y los sacramentos le ayudan a mantenerse en buena forma espiritual para alcanzar su meta del cielo. La última lección de fe es que se necesita un esfuerzo total del equipo para ganar el Super Bowl. Ofensiva, defensa, equipos especiales y entrenadores trabajando todos juntos. La Iglesia es lo misma, porque como enseña San Pablo, todos nosotros formamos el Cuerpo de Cristo y todos tenemos diferentes dones para contribuir por el bien del equipo de la Iglesia, y localmente, aquí en nuestra parroquia. Como tu pastor no puedo hacer esto solo. Mis hermanos sacerdotes y diáconos y todos ustedes, fieles feligreses, contribuyen al éxito de nuestra parroquia al ayudarnos los unos a otros a alcanzar la meta de la vida eterna. Como un buen equipo de fútbol, nos a necesitamos para tener éxito. Su tiempo, talentos y tesoro, junto con sus sacrificios y amor, ayudan a construir el Reino de Dios en nuestra comunidad. Todos ustedes son MVPs. (¡Los feligreses más valiosos!) Disfruten el juego, y el próximo año esperamos ver de nuevo a las Águilas.
