By Faith

Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for,

the conviction of things not seen. (Hebrews 11:1)

Hebrews chapters 11 and 12 will be read during our worship services in the month of August,

and in these chapters “Faith” comes up over and over again. I encourage you to pick up your

Bibles for a minute and read through chapter 11 in particular. Did you notice how “faith” is

described? “Faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.”

“By faith…” that is, in assurance of things hoped for and the conviction of things not seen, the

saints of old lived their lives and did things that defied human logic and reason. Abel offers a

better sacrifice, Noah builds an ark, Abraham leaves his father’s household to go to a place

unknown to him. In their assurance and conviction, these men of faith acted. They sacrificed,

they built and they went.

But contrary to the popular saying, faith is not blind. Faith doesn’t appear out of thin air.

Faith has something concrete that it is based on. Faith has an object, and that object is God.

For the saints of old, their faith was anchored in the promises God made. From Abel on down

the line, the promise that God made and the promise that He was keeping was that He would

send Jesus to save the world from sin and death. Abel makes his sacrifice trusting that God

will keep His promise. Noah builds trusting that through those in the Ark, God would keep

His promise. Abraham leaves his father’s home trusting that God will build a family for him

through whom the whole world would be blessed. And so it goes through the list of those who

believed and acted in the assurance and conviction of God’s promises.

Then you come to chapter 12 of Hebrews and you see the promises of God finding their ful-

fillment in Christ Jesus. For Jesus is “the author and perfecter of our faith” (Heb. 12:2) It is in

Jesus that you and I are to look in faith, that is, in assurance and conviction. It is in Jesus

where forgiveness of our sin is found. It is in Jesus where peace with God is provided. It is in

Jesus where we find true love and service. It is in Jesus where we find life. It is in Jesus

where we find hope of things still yet to come, namely the resurrection from the dead and the

fullness of everlasting life. All God’s promises are kept in Christ!

I pray that as you recall God’s promises to you in Christ Jesus you too may be strengthened in

faith, assured of things hoped for and full of conviction of things not yet seen. For you are

baptized into Christ and your life is in Christ, the author, perfecter, and the object of faith.

Saturday, August 10.

“What does God say about…?” 2nd and 4th Thursdays of the month

resuming August 22

7-8 pm | Classrooms A, B and C

Perhaps you or someone you know has

asked the question, “W hat does God say

about…?” (fill in the blank). It could be

something in the sciences... evolution, age of

the earth, genetic engineering, in vitro fertili-

zation, global warming. Maybe it was some-

thing political like the role of government

and the church, or Christian responsibilities

and freedoms in the civil realm. If you have

ever asked these questions, then this study is

for you. Resuming Thursday, August 22, the

pastors of Faith will be taking your questions

and leading topical studies through God’s

Word to discover what it is that God says on

a given subject.

In order to prepare for these studies, we need

to hear from you. Let us know what you

would like to explore. Fill out a purple form

available on the round table in the narthex

and return it to the marked basket in the

church office, or email the pastors at

[email protected] or

[email protected].

Catechism Corner

This August, as our children resume

their studies, we at Faith observe

Christian Education Sunday as the

kickoff for the various Christian in-

struction opportunities in the congre-

gation, including Confirmation,

Jesus Company, FLY, and Sunday School. To keep

children engaged and active in their spiritual growth

and nourishment is the highest call of Christian Parents

and no opportunity to foster this care should be refused

lightly. However, as wonderful as the above organized

curricula are, they are all supplementary to the instruc-

tion that takes place in the household from day to day.

As parents (and grandparents, aunts, uncles and guardi-

ans), you are your child’s principal instructor and mod-

el in the Christian faith. Indeed, Luther wrote that

“Father and Mother are apostles, bishops and priests to

their children, for it is they who make them acquainted

with the gospel” (Works, vol. 45).

The gravity of this responsibility cannot be understated,

for Luther also urges…

“If we want to have good and capable persons for both

temporal and spiritual leadership, we must certainly

spare no diligence, effort, or cost in teaching and edu-

cating our children that they may be able to serve God

and the world. We must think not only how we may

amass money and possessions for them; for God can

surely support them and make them rich without us, as

He is doing every day. But He has given and entrusted

children to us that we should train and govern them

according to His will; otherwise He would have no

need of father and mother. Let everyone know, there-

fore, that it is his (or her) duty, on peril of losing divine

favor, to bring up their children above all things in the

fear and knowledge of God and, if they are so talented,

to let them learn and study so that they may be of ser-

vice wherever they are needed” (Works, vol. 30).

While it is the pleasure and privilege of the teachers

and pastors of this congregation to help in the Christian

instruction of your children, they will ultimately look to

you as the model for their own faith. Take all due dili-

gence to provide them a rich and faithful example to

follow! Yes, bring them to the events and lessons in the

congregation, but share also the daily, organic parts of

the Christian life with your kids: pray with them, prior-

itize family devotions with them, read the Scriptures

with them, and, most importantly, be with them in wor-

ship to receive, as a family, the gifts God gives in His

Divine Service.

As you do this good and noble work for your children,

know that you are constantly in your pastors’ prayers

and that we are here not to substitute, but to support

you in the care and nourishment of your children!

—Pastors Edwards and Beck

Christian Education Sunday—August 11

Commissioning:

Teachers and those working with children and youth of all ages

in both our church and preschool will be commissioned at both

morning services.

New Sunday school classes:

As part of Christian Education Sunday on

August 11, all ages will meet for a Com-

mon Opening in the gym at 9:15 am. This

is an opportunity for adults and children

both to encourage one another in their faith. Children will then

advance to their new grade levels in Sunday School (odd-

numbered grades move up; the teachers will be on hand to make

sure everyone finds the right class!) and a Faith Milestone will

be recognized during the morning services:

Bibles for new 3rd graders:

Children beginning 3rd grade will be present-

ed with their very own Faith Alive Bibles.

During the 9:15 Sunday School hour on August 11, new 3rd

graders and their parents will meet with Pastor Edwards to go

through the Bible to see how it is organized and examine the

special features it has and learn ideas for helping children learn

Scripture.

Jesus Company & Confirmation instruction:

Jesus Company and Confirmation class will

meet each week from Noon-1:30 pm. The two

groups will start together in the gym each week with a meal and

opening devotion. The first week will be a Family Pitch-in on

August 11. After the meal, the two groups will split for times

of instruction and activities.

Are you being Called to Teach?

Serve our families and children by co-teaching

our 5-year-old/Kindergarten class. Teachers

alternate months, so you can still attend Adult

Bible Study on the weeks when you are not

teaching or accommodate your family’s schedule. A one-year

commitment is requested. All materials are provided.

To learn more talk with one of the pastors or Sunday School

superintendent Tim Paul ([email protected] or 812-

876-7045).

Lutheran Men's Gemütlichkeit 1st & 3rd Thursdays—5:15 pm

Just getting off work? Grab a beverage and join

in a time of fellowship with men of Faith and ULu at Lutheran

Men's Gemütlichkeit.

Beginning August 15, this group will meet on the 1st and 3rd

Thursdays of each month, alternating with the Thursday evening

Bible studies held at church (resuming August 22).

Locations will vary. Watch the bulletin, newsletter, and online

church calendar for details as each date approaches. For more

information please call or text Andrew Rusch at 765-860-7210.

Jesus Visits with Mary and Martha

In Luke 10:38-42, we find the account of Jesus visiting the

home of His friends, Mary and Martha, in Bethany. Luke

tells us that, while Mary sat at the feet of Jesus “listening to

what He said,” Martha was distracted by all the prepara-

tion that had to be done and complained to Jesus about

Mary not helping her. “‘Martha, Martha,’ the Lord answered, ‘you are wor-

ried and upset about many things, but only one thing is needed. Mary has

chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.’”

As stewards, we learn from these verses that time spent with Jesus is time

spent productively. Perhaps we, like Mar tha, have allowed too many

activities to keep us too busy to study God’s Word and spend meaningful

time in prayer. Perhaps we have even gotten into the habit of looking at the

Sabbath as just another day to sleep late, play golf, go fishing, or work some

overtime. John 15 discusses at length the importance of abiding in Christ.

As branches on the Vine, we will be nourished by Christ Himself who will

help us “keep the main thing the main thing.” The Holy Spirit will guide us

into making proper choices so that our work will not just be “busy-ness” but

produce real fruit.

Psalm 31:15 reads, “My times are in Y our hands…” We must be careful not

to get so wrapped up in ourselves and the ways of the world that we foolish-

ly waste our time. Living wisely includes proper time for worship, time for

service to others, and time for self-improvement and enrichment. “Be very

careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, making the most of

every opportunity, because the days are evil” (Ephesians 5:15-16).

What are you most looking forward to on the first day of

school?

Name three new things you learned last year.

Do you think we can be on time to school ten days in a

row?

What class subject would you love to have seven days a

week?

What two things did you like most about last school year?

Who have been your three favorite teachers or adults at

school?

What will be great about being in your new grade?

Who would you like to have in your class?

Name a friend who shares our faith in Jesus.

Calling all college students!

College is tough and we all need Jesus!

Greetings from the Director of

Faith Lutheran Preschool

and Christian Child Care

It’s hard to believe that August is already here. As

usual we are will be making some building improvements to help

us care for our growing program and care for even more children.

We will be starting a bathroom renovation that is much needed. If

you haven’t been down the education wing you may not know that

we only have 1 stall and 1 urinal for the boys and 2 stalls for the

girls. This coming year we are expecting more than 50 preschool-

ers that will need to use those facilities. The renovation will allow

us to put in 2 stalls and 2 urinals in the boys bathroom and 3 stalls

in the girls bathroom. We are also adding a bathroom in one of the

potty -trained toddler classrooms so that they will not have to share

with them. Thank you to the congregation for supporting us in this

endeavor.

We are looking forward to starting another exciting school year.

102 children are cur rently enrolled or are planning to join us

throughout the school year. We do have a few openings in our

Monday, Wednesday and Friday Pre-K class (full day and half day

options) as well as full time and part time spots for potty trained

children ages 3-5 years of age - if you or anyone you know is

interested please email me at [email protected].

In our education wing you will find:

a donations bulletin board located across from the business

office that has items that we need on it,

a bulletin board where you can share something about your

business so that our community can suppor t you,

staff photos as well as some information about each of us,

a family tree that holds photos of our families so that they can

better get to know each other.

We invite you to take a stroll down our hallway and get to know us

better!

You are all invited to attend our Open Houses—

Saturday, August 3, 10:30am-noon

Tuesday, August 6, 5:30-6:30 pm

Preschool Storytime invites YOU

to be a Guest Reader

In the preschool we have often been blessed with a

member of the church visiting us as a guest reader

to the children. The children love hearing a story from a new per-

son, and the guest has fun seeing the excitement in the children's

eyes. Many say they want to come back and read again.

This year we are trying to build on this by having time set aside

from about 1:05-1:15 in the afternoon for a guest reader .

Visit the sign-up calendar located at the preschool section of the

bulletin boards across from the library. We look forward to having

many of you sign up for one or more days and help our children

develop a love of reading. We don't expect to fill all days but the

more the better!

If you have any questions feel free to ask Rachel Stults, Meghan

Faulkner, Kristin Cross or Cara Huss. Thank you!
