Christmas Eve Worship Services The Christmas Eve Worship service will be at 3pm and 5pm on
December 24th. These special candlelight services include
special music, favorite hymns, a meaningful message and Holy
Communion. Let’s rejoice in the Good News of Jesus Christ
together.
The office will be closed December 24 & 25 for Christmas.
Sunday School Children’s Christmas Program Super Christmas! Please come check out the Christmas
program, A Super Christmas! The kids are anxious to help us
see the real Christmas. The program will be Sunday, December
16th, at 10:45am. We will have our annual potluck dinner
after the program at 11:45am. Bring a dish to share, come join
in fellowship together. Please note we will have our regular
Sunday worship service w/Holy Communion at 9am.
Love is born! Come, share in the wonder. Love is God now asleep in the hay.
See the glow in the eyes of his mother, what is the name her heart is saying?
Love! Love! Love is the name she whispers: Love! Love! Jesus, Immanuel”.
ELW Hymn #292, Love Has Come by Ken Bible
Recently I walked in to greet the mothers here for the Family Art Hour that the Extension
Office sponsors in our space twice a month. There were several new babies in the group.
Joy and exhaustion was written on each of these mother’s faces. These new babies each have
older siblings, so their faces were relaxed and weary, not anxious. To me (especially as the
days grow short and the calendar turns to December) the image of a woman with a new baby
is the image of the incarnation. This image says “flesh of my flesh”, body and blood and
sinew and sweat became holy and became wholly us. Life is holy. The ordinary reveals the
divine.
While the cross is the best summary of Jesus’ life and the meaning of his life, we cannot
understand the depth and richness of his life solely by it. We begin at the beginning. A
fragile baby is born on a cold night and wrapped in bands of cloth and lying in a manger
(Luke 2:12). He cried, he cooed, he nursed, he needed his diaper changed, he needed to be
kept warm and safe. Have you ever wondered: Who made Jesus’ clothes? What were his first
words? Who taught him to read? Who were his friends? Was he a good older brother, helpful
and kind? What made him laugh? What made him cry?
Jesus experienced life as we experience life and Jesus showed us how to truly be human. So,
we come to the manger. To see Jesus. To see God in the flesh. Venice R. Williams reminds us
in a recent article printed in “Gather” magazine that the word “manger” has its roots in the
Old French word magnier, meaning “to eat”, and the Latin word manducare, meaning “to
chew”. The King of heaven and earth’s first bed was a feeding trough where meager animals
came to be nourished. We too are nourished at the manger. The angels call the most
devalued people to the manger first, the shepherds. God meets the most dismissed among
us in the most humble, lowly places. Emmanuel, God with us, meets us to feed us and make
us whole. Venice says, “It is as if God is saying, “I see you. I am with you. Here is Jesus,
the bread of life. Here is my banquet table, the manger. Here is where all your empty,
fragmented spaces can be filled” (Dec. 2018 issue, pg 16).
In this season filled with many good things: concerts and parties, food and decorations, carve
out spaces of silence in your life. Spaces to meet the Christ, “God from God, light from light,
true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father…for us and for
our salvation He came down from heaven, incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary,
becoming truly human.*” Turn toward this Light, live in this light, be fed by this light in
worship and prayer so that you can give back to this creation beauty and peace and heaven.
In this way our ordinary lives reflect Christ’s light until that day when we will see our Lord
Jesus face to face.
Life is holy. There is not place where God is not.
Advent peace and Christmas joy,
Pastor Jolene

Prayer Ministry Group
"Let us acknowledge the Lord; let us press on to acknowledge him". Hosea 6:3
Are we so busy thinking about the places we need to go and the things we need to do to prepare for
Christmas that we don’t have room for God in our thoughts? Hosea, an Old Testament prophet,
wrote these words to the Israelites. The people had forgotten God and before long there was no room
for God in their thoughts. Let’s remember that God is near and at work in our lives. What better
way to “acknowledge Him” than to spend quiet time in prayer.
You are welcome and invited to join with us as we pray for the Faith
Lutheran family and ministries. We meet on the first Sunday of each
month at 8:30am in the Fireside Room.
Blessings,
Prayer Ministry Group
ELCA Good Gifts—Advent Tree Ornaments God is calling us into the world together. With generous, loving
hands, our actions reflect God’s love in our homes and community and
around the world. Consider selecting an ornament from our ELCA
Good Gifts Advent tree. Your donations support long-term sustainable
solutions that ensure that these good gifts last for more than a couple
days or weeks.
Gifts range from $10 for ten little chicks providing steady protein and income for a family to gifts
of varying amounts in agricultural, water, women and children, disaster response and more. A
favorite is the superhero of the barnyard - a goat! Goats survive in some of the world’s harshest
environments and their fresh milk provides important nutrition for children. This year, a gift of $25
to feed a refugee family for a week in a resettlement camp would be a good way to honor the birth of
Christ.
These gifts are effective because of our partnership with local congregations in places like the Bohong
region of the Central African Republic and West Bengal, India. With enormous respect for local
context, local expertise and local ingenuity, solutions to local needs are developed “on the ground”
and trust is built in these long-standing relationships. Because of the local church partnerships, the
administrative costs for this work is about 8%, among the lowest of other organizations doing similar
work.
Choose your gift, then give by going online: www.ELCA.org/goodgifs, call 800-638-3522 or mail with
the forms available at church to Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, PO Box 1809, Merrifield,
VA 22116-8009.
If your gift is in honor of someone, you can print a card
online or request a printed card be mailed to your
home. Thank you for making an impact on the needs
of our church and the world.

A Message from Our Council President It is the beginning of a new year on the church calendar. This time of year, we anticipate the
coming of Christ in the Advent season. It is a time full of traditions, memories, and signs of
the Christmas season soon to be here. I sit in my living room tonight surrounded by a very
stereotypical Christmas scene. Christmas music is playing softly in the background. The kids are
tucked into bed and sleeping (hopefully). A lighted string of garland decorates the fireplace
providing a nice background for the 5 stockings hung waiting to be filled. Multiple nativity sets
adorn our home ranging from the little tykes children’s version to the more traditional porcelain
set we received as a gift. The outside lights are not yet up (I’m waiting for that one last warm day)
but the tree is decorated and lit beautifully.
When I was growing up, mom and dad started a tradition of giving each of us children an
ornament at Christmas commemorating something we had done that year. This is a tradition
we’ve continued with our children. I reminisce as I look back at ornaments ranging from my first
day of school to my graduation, from my first-time walking to getting my first car. I think back on
Christmas’ from those years and have such wonderful memories of that time of year. Celebrating
with extended family was very important to my Great Grandparents, my Grandparents and now
my parents as well. The church Sunday school programs and Christmas Eve services were also
something we always looked forward to. Our church family played a very important part in my
upbringing and is part of many of the memories that come to mind.
Our kids’ ornaments are beginning to fill our tree more and more. I hope that one day my children
too will be looking at their Christmas tree reminiscing about their Christmas memories. Faith
Lutheran has become an important part of our lives. Thank you for being so supporting to our
family as well as other young families in our church over the years. Our kids (and us) feel that
the members at Faith Lutheran are like family. I have no doubt that when they look back, they
too will have blessed memories of the Faith Lutheran people and the foundation that was provided
to them. I know that Christmas can be a bittersweet time as well. The stress from all the
preparation, a hectic schedule, missed family who cannot be together, or loved ones no longer with
us can seem too much to bear. Remember that you have a family here
at Faith. We laugh with you and we cry with you. We are here with
you in your joy AND your sorrows. Don’t be afraid to lean on one
another when you need to.
As I look closer at the little tykes nativity set, I see that baby Jesus is
missing from the manger. This does not concern me just yet as we
often debate whether Jesus should be part of the nativity before
Christmas day and its possible one of the children just hid it for now.
It does serve as a reminder though to not let Jesus go missing from
YOUR Christmas season. Remember that Jesus is the reason for the
season. The greatest gift any of us have ever received is the gift of
Jesus Christ. Merry Christmas to you all.
Your Brother in Christ,
Tyler Van Bruggen
Faith Lutheran Church Council President.

Hi-Liner Pantry Program The Hi-Liner Pantry at Valley City High School has a room for the Hi-Liner Pantry supplies and the
pantry open is 10am-4pm on M-W-F and the 2nd Monday of each month from 6-8 pm. The kids utilize the
pantry every week with referrals from teachers, counselors or even self-referrals.
The Hi-Liner Pantry is doing a “One a Month” project for donation items for the pantry. The item for
December needed for the “one a month” project is: Non-perishable Fruit Cups and Pudding Cups. If
you are interested in helping this mission please provide the item in the box at the front of the church.
We are thankful to all who brought items in November.
Community Thanksgiving Baskets Thank You “You will be enriched in every way for your generosity, which will
produce thanksgiving to God through us.” 2 Corinthians 9:11.
Another successful Thanksgiving Basket mission has been completed! This yearly mission is a group
effort of Faith Lutheran, Trinity Lutheran and Our Savior’s Lutheran Churches. We were able to help
120 families this year have a happy Thanksgiving with the gift of a basket. There were 49 deliveries and
71 pickups.
Thank you to those who gave a monetary donation to help purchase the items in the Baskets. Thank you
to Leevers North and Leevers South for ordering and delivering the food. Thank you to everyone who
helped pack the baskets and deliver the boxes. We couldn’t do this without all your helping hands! We
had 45 adults and youth help on Friday night. A big thank you to Julie Moritz for sending the letters,
taking phone calls and organizing the lists. We appreciate all of your hard work.
God’s Blessings,
Cindy Waagen and Brenda Bong

Mission Team News
The Angel Ministry supports children in our area who have a parent that is
incarcerated by sending them 2 Christmas gifts, one of clothing and one of toys.
Angels will still be available at the church on Sunday, December 2nd. Gifts need to
be purchased, wrapped, and returned to the church by Sunday, December
9th so they can be shipped to the families in time for Christmas. Please consider
taking an Angel tag for one of the 30 children our congregation supports. If you are not interested in
shopping, but would like to support the cause, please consider donations to help pay for shipping costs for
the Angel gifts or to provide Christmas gifts to other Needy Families in our community. Any donation
can be dropped off with Julie in the church office.
Future mission collections include 2-piece PJs, sweatpants or warm leggings
and long sleeved shirts and fleece to make blankets for Project Ignite Light in
January and February. Please keep an eye out for holiday sales to support
this great charity. Fleece blankets should be made with 2 pieces of fleece,
1 1/2 yards each. We are also planning another blanket-tying event probably
in February.
We want to remind you about our “Mission Christmas” Fund. All Sundays, loose
change in the offering is given towards the Mission Christmas (for those in need)
Fund. The 1st & 3rd Sundays of each month are designated dollar Sundays, and all
loose dollars go into this fund. During the Christmas season, the Mission Team
purchases gift cards from local businesses to brighten the holiday for families in our
congregation and community that are in need. Our account is at $606.05 as of
November 26. This mission has a quiet, but powerful impact but we need your help to continue. Please
consider supporting this mission with your pocket change or dollars!
The next meeting will be Tuesday, December 11th at 5:30pm to pack up the Angel Tree gifts.
Celebration of Life Tree The Youth Ministry of Faith continues our tradition
of the “Celebration of Life” tree. Buy an angel
ornament for $5 in memory of or in honor of a loved
one to celebrate their life. Eliza Johnson will be
making the angels. Forms are in the
church office and in the bulletin.
Fill it out and return the form and
money. Your loved one’s name will
be on the angel on the tree. Names
received by December 16th will be
listed in the Christmas Eve bulletin.
Christmas Poinsettias We would like to have 10-15 poinsettias
to adorn our altar on Christmas Eve. If you
would like to purchase a plant for $10 or bring a
poinsettia in honor of or in memory of a loved
one there is a sign up sheet on
the table in gathering area. You
may also let Julie in the office
know. Your loved one’s name
will be listed in the Christmas
Eve bulletin.
Help Make a Family’s Holiday Brighter We need your help to make sure that no Abused Persons Outreach Center family goes without
gifts this holiday. You will brighten a child’s holiday and provide a way for parents to select
gifts for their own children. Donate a gift card or money donation marked “APOC Giving
Tree” ($10-$25 to a toy or clothing store such as ShopKO, Walmart, Urban Couture, etc.) by
December 7th to: APOC, 253 Central Ave N Suite 2, Valley City, ND 58072.
