Lenten Worship Schedule Lenten Wednesdays: Meal Served 5:30-6pm

Worship Service: 6:30pm

God desires us to draw near to Christ that it may go

well with us and our children forever! Lent is a great time to connect

more deeply with one another and our God. Christ invites us to delight in

the story of Scripture—to have fun! Then the Bible becomes to us a Living

Word rather than a divine reference book. We get caught up in the story

and part of it stays with us. Come out for a delicious, simple meal and a

time of worship that will begin with kids marching with instruments

around the sanctuary and end with coming up to light a candle and kneel

in prayer. This Lent we will enjoy a short drama performed each week.

Holy Week Schedule:

Sunday, March 25, Palm Sunday—Our Sunday

School children will be singing at our 9am worship

service and will process in with palms.

Wednesday, March 28—No meal or service.

Thursday, March 29—We will serve a meal from 5:30-6pm followed

by worship w/Holy Communion at 6:30pm.

Good Friday, March 30— Faith’s Good Friday service will be at

7:30pm.

Easter Sunday, April 1—We celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ,

our Lord and Savior. Worship services w/Holy Communion will be at 8am

and 10am. We will enjoy fellowship together from 9-10am. Caramel

rolls, cinnamon rolls, fresh fruit, coffee & orange juice will be served.

Take time to worship with your Faith family

this Easter season and throughout the year.

Daylight Savings Time—March 11. The office will be closed at noon on Good Friday, Mar 30 & Monday, April 2

Community Good Friday Service

The Community Good Friday service will be Friday, March

30th, 12:10pm-1pm at Faith Lutheran. Come for a service

of prayer, Bible readings, reflections, and song, as a way to

ponder the gift of Jesus’ sacrifice for the sake of the world.

Hosted by the Barnes County Ministerial Association.

Page 2: Faith On the rise · will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:6-7 When we pray more, we worry less!! In prayer, we give the problem to God, therefore

May these thoughts encourage you this Lent as we draw closer

to Christ Jesus.

1 Peter 3:18-22 (NRSV)

For Christ also suffered for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous,

in order to bring you to God. He was put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the spirit,

in which also he went and made a proclamation to the spirits in prison, who in former times

did not obey, when God waited patiently in the days of Noah, during the building of the ark,

in which a few, that is, eight persons, were saved through water. And baptism, which this

prefigured, now saves you--not as a removal of dirt from the body, but as an appeal to God

for a good conscience, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, who has gone into heaven

and is at the right hand of God, with angels, authorities, and powers made subject to him.

Gods don't suffer. And they definitely don't die! They intervene capriciously with human

affairs and are usually impervious to our pleas for justice. The notion that God would

participate in the depths of suffering--six feet deep to be precise--is completely absurd.

Unless, of course, that God had a passionate love for humanity that could only be expressed

by joining fully in the human experience. Knowing that God has stood with us and for us for

the sake of love and freedom, we too are called to proclaim love to others knowing that we are

freed to do so.

The passionate love of Jesus in the flesh is now released into the world as we are made alive

in our baptism. The suffering that comes from standing with and for others is now redeemed

in Christ. We can now face the toughest challenges that our world faces knowing that we

Belong to God. As James Baldwin said, "Not everything that is faced can be changed, but

nothing can be changed until it is faced."

Jesus, teach us how to die before we die. Show us that true power is in vulnerability.

Help us put down our weapons and pick up our cross. Amen.

Prayer Team “Don’t worry about anything, but in everything, through prayer and petition with thanksgiving,

let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses every thought,

will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:6-7

When we pray more, we worry less!! In prayer, we give the problem to

God, therefore we experience more peace of mind.

Please join for prayer on the 1st Sunday of each month at 8:30am in the

Fireside Room.

Blessings, Prayer Team

A Message from our Council President

I can do all things through him who gives me strength. - Philippians 4:13.

This verse seemed to be one I related to when accepting the nomination for Faith Lutheran Church

council president. I am honored and humbled to serve Faith Lutheran in this new capacity. I pray

for God’s guidance and strength for myself as well as the rest of our council as we serve our

congregation. Thank you to Mark Brandvold for his past service as president. He will remain a

valuable resource to me while he continues to serve on council. I’d also like to thank our outgoing

members Brenda Bong, Elaine Walls, and Scott Wilmes, for their service while on council. We

welcome Paulette Everson, Larry Sayler, and Jeremy Wiebe as our new council members. I am

excited to see God work through them and watch his plan for them unfold over the coming months.

While we certainly face challenges ahead, the foundation has been laid for God’s work to continue

through our congregation. While the “newness” of our church building may be wearing off, we

continue to have new visitors enter the church for the first time. The shock and awe are still there

for them as we continue to receive comments about how beautiful our new space is. Visitors feel

comfortable in our church because we are a welcoming congregation. With the continuation of Lent

and the upcoming Easter season, there may opportunities where God sends guests to experience

our church. Continue to greet them with a smile and host them as you would in your own home.

Your cheerful attitude and positivity might just be the high point in that person’s day. Enjoy the

Lenten season. Open your hearts to God. Meditate on God’s sacrifice for us. Know that he died so

that we may live.

Your Brother in Christ,

Tyler VanBruggen

Faith Lutheran Church Council President

Thank You Pastor Jim Bjorge

and Carol Bjorge Winter!

We’d like to extend a special thank you to Pastor Jim Bjorge

and his wife Carol for their service to our congregation these

past 8 weeks. Our congregation was blessed to have them

lead us in God’s word and worship with us over that time.

Thank you, God, for providing them safe travel for all those

early mornings and winter road miles, as well as the late

evening commute on Ash Wednesday. The Bjorge family will

always have a special place in our hearts here at Faith

Lutheran.

Thank You,

Faith Lutheran Council

on behalf of the Faith Lutheran Congregation

WELCA News

The Faith WELCA Board met February 12, 2018 at the church.

Business discussed was the Lutheran World Relief Project.

During the month of March we are asking members of Faith to

bring the following items for personal health kits:

March 4—2 bars of soap and one adult toothbrush (unopened)

March 11—one comb and one metal nail clipper (both removed from package)

March 18—one dark colored lightweight bath towel (20" x 40" or 52" x 27")

March 25—the younger Sunday School children will help us pack the kits.

All items must be new.

Bold Women’s Day will be observed February 25th with a Litany of Thanks for the Bold Women in our

church and in our lives. The Thank Offering will be taken on February 25.

We have our new cross centerpieces on the tables for the Lent and Easter season.

We will be assembling the new Spring centerpieces at our April meeting.

Other additional purchases approved and made are additional serving dishes and

silverware.

I would also like to mention that one of our new smaller folding tables is missing.

While we purchased the tables for the church and for people to use we would

certainly appreciate it if anyone taking them or an other property or equipment

belonging to the church, checks it out with Julie in the office before taking it

home. I am sure whoever is using it has every intention of bringing it back, we

would just like to know where it is so we can get it if we need it. Thank you.

Our next meeting will be Monday, March 5 at 3:30pm.

Peace,

Cheryl Foell

Mission Team News Sunday, February 4th, was the Fleece Tying

Blankets day. We had 21 adults and 15 youth

working together on the Project Ignite Light

fleece blankets. Fourteen blankets were

cut and tied. Great fellowship was enjoyed

while doing this project together. Thank you

to everyone who donated fleece material and

helped with the tying. Thank you to Doreen

Sayler and Central Avenue Pharmacy for

giving a 20% discount on the fleece purchased

there. Thank you Nancy Sorensen and Krista

Johnson for helping prepare the blankets with

the mission team on Saturday so they were

ready for Sunday morning. Thank you to

Pastor Terry for delivering the fleece blankets

and pajamas to Project Ignite Light.

A Thrivent member requested and received a $250 Thrivent Action Team card that was used to help

purchase fleece. Thank you!

Lenten Special Offering for ELCA Good Gifts: Pick up a “Piggy” Bank at the church, drop

loose change or dollars in it throughout the Lenten season, and return it to the church by

Easter. The “Piggy” Banks are on the table in the gathering area. They can be turned

into the office or placed in the offering plate. $30 supplies a piglet to a family in a

developing country, but any amount will support ELCA’s cause.

Second Cup Sunday will be Sunday, March 11th. The Mission Team will be selling coffee and tea at

a discounted price. They will discontinue selling the Equal Exchange items when their inventory is gone.

Dayspring boxed cards can be purchased on Second Cup Sundays or see Julie in the office to purchase

them.

The Mission Team members would like to thank Angela Van Bruggen for her leadership for the past 10+

years. Angela has decided to step down from the Mission Team to focus on Children’s Ministry and her

family. Her presence will be missed. She has left us excellent notes to help guide us on our mission.

Thank you Angela for everything! ─ The Mission Team

We are always looking for new members to join the team. If you are interested, we meet the first Tuesday

of the month at 5:30pm at Faith. Consider joining and enhancing the team.

The Mission Team’s next meeting will be Tuesday, March 6th at 5:30pm.

Bridges Backpack Program The Bridges Backpack Program continues to deliver kid-friendly food home for the weekend to address

youth hunger in needy families. As a reminder, approximately $200 will sponsor an elementary children

for the school year (although any amount makes a difference), providing nutritious

food each weekend. If you are or have been one of the supporters of the program,

thank you. If you haven’t supported the program in the past, please prayerfully

consider doing so. Contributions should be made to the Faith Lutheran Church

Endowment Foundation and can dropped off at the church office.
