Fake News

AZ SCCCA The weatherman provided us with a very nice day with temperatures in the mid-eighties, with clear skies though out the day. As the day progressed and pavement surfaced warmed and the lap times came down. The time only runs were reduced to three turns around the course due to a time crunch to be finished by 5 pm.

Another neat ride at the Spring Event #4 was Brian Jackson’s very cool and historic 1965 Monza, equipped with a stock 140 h.p. motor, Posi, a 4 speed and a single Holley on the flat 6 motor.

Interesting Historical Fact: The Chevy Corvair Monza first appeared on the market in 1960 and its unconventional rear-mounted, air-cooled setup made waves in the automotive community. It was an advanced vehicle that was powered by mostly aluminum engines and featured unibody construction - the first unibody built by Fisher.

The venerable Harry Bezes of Prescott AZ provides us with a timely tip to carve a few tenth off your run times. He noted that his Mazda Miata was delivering enough power at the start line to yield a fair amount of wheel spin, yet if the rear wheels are spinning they are not moving forward efficiently. This happens most often as the start area gets a bit chewed up from multiple launches over the course of the day. Harry explained that he looks for a “throttle sweet spot” in the launch to get off the line quickly , yet not spin the tires in doing so. With bigger horse power cars, you can adjust by launching in second gear if the launch area surface gets too loose. Or, stagger off the line left or right a few inches at the start for a better grip. Thanks Harry for this often overlooked area to reduce a few tenth off our run times.

Jack and April Reany brought their teams SAE Formula car

(Society of Automotive Engineers) to the #4 Spring SCCA event.

The car is designed, and built completely by a student automotive engineering

university team and entered in a national points contest,

which is a highly competitive event. .Judges include big names in automotive design like

Carroll Smith and Bill Mitchell. If you thought the SCCA class rules were tough, these students must

navigate through a 134-page rule book! Auto cross is one of seven judging

criteria considered. Judging criteria include, design,

costs, presentation, acceleration, skid pad, autocross,

fuel economy, and endurance. April & Jack,

we honor and acknowledge your participation and service

in this most impressive formula SAE event.

This tip is for the care most important speed component in autocross-- your brain! According to the Climate Central Report the last four years have been among the hottest on record around the world. Phoenix being in the Sonora Desert, experiences well over 100 days over 100 degrees Fahrenheit. As we auto cross in AZ in the last spring and summer we can see temperatures near and over 100 degrees at local events. Exposure to the effects of excessive heat at autocrosses can have a subtle effect on the human brain as our core body temperature creeps up. The key is to keep hydrated and keep your core body temp normal. The relationship between driving performance and heat prostration and/or dehydration can result in slower reaction times, fuzzy vision, fatigue, and even headaches. So, avoid brain fade on those hot desert days by wearing a big floppy hat, drinking plenty of water and sports drinks, and avoiding over exerting yourself excessively physically. Remember, once we are dehydrated it takes a few hours for the body to recover. Be sure to add back electrolytes which are so important to the maintenance of good body hydration. Add in some salty snacks, coconut water or sports drinks on hot days; pack in an umbrella and small Ice cooler as well. Plan ahead to

stay cool fellow racers!

Can’t wait until September to auto cross again? While our local SCCA region wisely does not schedule summer events here in the hot desert, there is plenty of summer auto cross action within our region. Check out these websites for regional summer solo event schedules: • San Diego solo events, June-Sept at sdrsccas.com • Los Vegas solo events, June -Sept. at Ivrscca.org • Tucson Border Region solo events, June-Sept at azbrscca.org • Colorado Region solo events June-Sept at rmsolo.org

Solo®” is the brand name and on paper it seems very simple – Use traffic cones to make a mini-road course in a large parking lot or unused airport tarmac and see who can drive it the quickest without hitting any cones or going off course. Despite the generally low speeds attained during competition, it’s one of the fastest paced, rapid-fire forms of motorsports you can find, with barriers to entry so low that many people are able to compete and be competitive at it. Competitors range from the casual participant who may use the same daily driver that they car-pool with to the hard-core driver who has a special car, special tires and uses lots of vacation days to squeak out every last fraction of a second. In between the extremes, there are levels and classes for different degrees of car modification. There are even classes for ladies and also a Junior Driver program for kids in age appropriate karts. Whatever your level or car – there is a place for you in SCCA Solo.

The Ford Mustang is one of the most iconic cars ever produced. It celebrated its 50th Anniversary last year, and Ford created a unique side-by-side display of the car to showcase its design evolution. This split creation will be on display at the National Inventors Hall of Fame Museum (NIHF), which will also highlight company founder Henry Ford. The Mustang was selected to show off automotive innovation over the past 50 years. It’s part of the Intellectual Property Power Exhibit at the museum, which is on the US Patent and Trademark Office Campus located in Alexandria, Virginia. The Mustang will be shown along with other exhibits designed to show the innovation and culture of America. Ford was specially selected to be a part of this project for its long history as an American automotive innovator. The Mustang was a natural fit for the display with its 50-year run and legions of admirers. This isn’t the first time Ford has partnered with the NIHF. Ford and its employee volunteers have been a part of Camp Invention for 20 years. The camp runs summer programs focused on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) with hands-on programs designed to help kids learn. The Ford Mustang is also a great fit, since there were no style patents when it was first built. It simply wasn’t done back in 1965.
