Director’s Note:When I was in high school, American History was taught by Mr. Rose. We all had that one teacher who we remember because they inspired us, made us crave the knowledge that they were there to impart and, ultimately, were responsible for the person we became. Mr. Rose was not that teacher. He was very quiet, slightly abrasive (especially when he was yelling my last name to startle me awake during a lecture) and the kind of teacher who could blend into the chalkboard. However, when he would get to a time or event in history that he was particularly fond of (the Emancipation Proclamation, the Great War, McCarthyism, to recall a few) he became possessed. He would animate all of the actions, don caps, props and accents to become historical figures and even draft us into his skits to play the supporting characters. It was as if somebody had replaced the teacher from Ferris Beuller’s Day Off with the one from Dead Poets Society. We were entertained, we were challenged and we were interested in finding out more about those particular events. It was a great way to learn and, as I reflect on it now, probably influenced my eventual career choice more than I knew. As Edmund Burke says, “Those who don’t know history are doomed to repeat it.” I sincerely hope that you enjoy tonight’s performance and do not find it repetitive. Thanks, Mr. Rose!

THE COMPLETE HISTORY OF AMERICA (abridged) was originally produced and performed by The Reduced Shakespeare Company. It had its first public performance on 18 March 1993 at the Stewart Theatre at North Carolina State University. Later that year it was performed at the American Repertory Theatre in Cambridge, MA, the Lincoln Center

“Serious Fun” Festival in New York City, and the Montreal “Just For Laughs” Festival. With one cast change, the play had extended runs at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC in the summers of 1994 and 1995. With two cast changes, the play opened at the Criterion Theatre in London’s West End in 1996 where it ran continuously until 2005.
