Story Time

Kids are learning to love

reading at the Lexington

Rescue Mission Thrift Store. Every

aturday afternoon, children come

o the store to listen to volunteers

ead stories to them. The kids

ick out the books, which include

verything from simple picture

ooks to more advanced chapterooks.

Laura Gallaher, who serves as

n AmeriCorps member at the

exington Rescue Mission, started

tory Time at the thrift store last

winter. “A lot of these kids don’t

sually read for fun,” she said.

This is a good opportunity for us

o share the joy of reading and to

uild relationships with kids in the

eighborhood.”Story Time is held from 1:00-

:00 P.M. on Saturdays at the

exington Rescue Mission Thrift

tore, located at 720 Bryan

Avenue. If you are interested in

olunteering, please contact Laura

Doug was the very first graduate

from the Mission’s recovery

program in 2003. But we know that

he habits of a lifetime sometimes

ake more than a few months tobreak, so when

Doug needed us

gain, we

welcomed him

with open arms!

“I didn’t do

aught here,”

ays Doug. “Iidn’t stay

connected to the Mission or a local

church. I isolated myself. I had too

much idle time on my hands. So, I

started drinking again. My parents

would help me out, but they got tothe point where they said they were

not going to do it any more.

“God was

working in my life

even through all the

craziness. I contacted

the Mission and

came in. I feel very

blessed and grateful

to be back here.

Very appreciative.

Like I belong again.

This is what God’s

intended for us

to do: to live

interdependently,

depending on Him

and others. I’m so

grateful for this place

and the fellowship of

other Christians.”

Lexington Rescue Mission helped send

more than 50 urban children to

summer camp in Annville, KY. At camp,

the boys and girls had the chance to leave

their troubles behind and just be kids for a

week. For children who have spent their

whole lives in the city, activities like

boating and fishing were completely new

and exciting. However, one of the

biggest thrills of the week was the slide,

a long sheet of plastic covered in soap

and water that stretched down a

hillside into a lake.

Through worship, devotions and

Bible studies, the kids had the

opportunity to discover God and how

He wants to be a part of their lives.“Almost everybody made a first-time

decision for Christ or rededicated

their lives to him,” said Jacob

Moss, Director of Jackson County

Ministries. “That was a fantastic thing

watch that night when it happened.”

Youth leaders from local churches

traveled to the camp to spend the wee

with the children, building relationship

with them that will last long after they

return home. Thank you for making th

life-changing summer!
