Join the Baruch College STEP Academy this summer. Choose from one of our four tracks in:

1) Renewable Energy (7th and 8th grade)

2) Engineering Principles of Bridges (9th and 10th grade)

3) Research Methods for the Social Sciences (10th and 11th grade)

4) Biological Systems (11th and 12th grade)

The summer program meets from Monday, July 8th through Thursday August 1st. All courses meet from 9:30am to 2pm at Baruch College.

(1) Renewable Energy Instructor – Ms. Doczi 9:30 am 2:00 pm

(Note: 7th and 8th graders)

This introductory course will explore concepts related to renewable energy,

alternative energy sources, and energy efficiency. Students will learn about the different types of renewable energy sources, such as wind, solar, geothermal, hydropower and biomass. Students will learn to build mini solar cars and windmills. The lessons will include hands-on activities and projects with possible field trips.

Engineering Principles of Bridges Instructor – Mr. Tobias

9:30 am 2:00 pm (Note: 9th and 10th graders)

This course involves trips to Central Park and the Brooklyn Bridge to study the

architecture and engineering of the bridges and arches. Mathematical concepts will be explored and applied to build several structures that will be field tested for stability and practicality. The class will culminate in prototype bridges that will be tested for usability, strength and aesthetic grace. The class will be a synthesis of engineering bridges that incorporates literature, art and NYC history.

Research Methods for the Social Sciences Instructor – Ms. Puliyampet

9:30 am 2:00 pm (Note: 10th and 11th Graders)

Students will develop knowledge and skills in psychological research, including

hypothesis development, research design, data analysis, and scientific writing. Students will be expected to research a specific topic, independently or within a group, for the entire month. After research and data collection, the students work will culminate in posters that will be presented at the end of the class and continue with upcoming conferences throughout the year. The best posters will be presented at the Annual STEP Statewide Student Conference weekend held in Albany, NY every March:

(4) Biological Systems Instructor – Mr. Russo 9:30 am 2:00 pm

(Note: 11th and 12th Graders)

This intensive, exploratory general science course will expose students to the fields of anatomy, biology, environmental science and ecology as well as the economic and political influences on biological systems. Students will perform laboratory experiments, attend various field trips throughout the city and participate in group and individual project presentations. Guest speakers from various scientific fields will periodically speak with the students about obtaining careers in science. ───────────────────────────────────────────────────────
