Dear FrienDs oF oHa,

In 2000, Oral Health America made

a commitment to America’s Promise

Alliance to seal one million teeth by

2010. We recently achieved that

goal, thanks to generous donors and

dedicated partners who serve children

nationwide. OHA is doubling our goal

for 2020, and will seal two million

teeth for 500,000 children! Our Seal

Two Million promise is about helping

at-risk kids, and our campaign will

take all OHA programs to a new level.

Setting this ambitious goal reminds us

that for those to whom much has been

given, much is asked in return. Please

let us know that we can count on you

this holiday season!

With gratitude for your continued support,

To seal one million teeth, Oral Health America

(OHA) donated sealant materials, grant awards

totaling $1.8 million, and technical assistance

to more than 900 partners in 27 states through

the Smiles Across America® (SAA) program.

By committing to seal another two million

teeth, OHA is expanding support to more local

programs in additional communities to bring

healthy mouths to life.

“This commitment exemplifies the impactful

work that our 400+ Alliance partners engage

in to improve the lives of children and youth

in this country,” said Marguerite W. Kondracke,

President and CEO, America’s Promise Alliance.

“It’s the kind of action that’s necessary to

ensure our young people graduate high school

prepared to reach their full potential. The

Alliance congratulates Oral Health America

on this tremendous milestone and applauds

them on their desire to extend this wonderful

program because we know that the health of

our young people is an essential ingredient for

their overall success.”

OHA’s mission calls for us to change lives

by connecting communities with resources.

Our new Seal Two Million Campaign goal

would not be possible without the support

of dental sealant product donors including

DENTSPLY International, 3M ESPE, Pulpdent

Corporation, Harry J. Bosworth Company,

and Ivoclar Vivadent.

In a challenging economy, these companies,

and our other SAA sponsors enable OHA to

help local treatment partners offer additional

services, such as restorative care, serve

more at-risk children in more places, and

start new programs. Your contributions

allow us to increase access to care,

education and advocacy for all Americans,

especially those most vulnerable.

To acknowledge the tenth anniversary of the Surgeon General’s Report on Oral Health in America, OHA and the Dental Trade Alliance (DTA) hosted an event on Capitol Hill on September 29. Attended by over 100 oral health supporters, the event called attention to the leaders, policies, and public private partnerships working to address the significant unmet need in dental care and education faced by many rural and inner-city communities.

“The Surgeon General’s report focused our attention on the burden that oral disease places on health and quality of life,” said Rear Admiral Dr. William Bailey, Assistant Surgeon General and Chief Dental Officer, U.S. Public Health Service. “We have made some progress, but there is much more work to be done—together.”

At the event, OHA presented the Marvin Goldstein Outstanding Volunteer Award to Dr. George Blue Spruce, Jr., the first American Indian dentist on record, for his significant work in caring for communities through the Indian Health Service, and for his mentorship of American Indian dental professionals at the Arizona School of Dentistry and Oral Health. OHA and DTA presented a joint award to U.S. Senator Jeff Bingaman for his longstanding support of oral health.

Help for a Local Charity

OHA has more than 1,300 fans on Facebook, who are the first to hear about our latest news. Help us get to 2,000 by clicking “like” on our Facebook page, and suggesting OHA to your friends. When we reach 2,000 fans, we will show our thanks to you. We will conduct a random drawing out of all of our Facebook fans. The winner will receive 200 travel packs containing a toothbrush, toothpaste, and floss to send to your favorite local charity.

OHA OHA welcomed four new treatment partners into the Smiles Across America® (SAA) program family: Kids in Need of Dentistry (KIND), Denver; Columbia St. Mary’s Smart Smiles in Milwaukee; United Way of North Central Florida and University of Florida College of Dentistry, Alachua County, FL; and CincySmiles Foundation, Cincinnati.

Trident® supported the program expansion to new schools and more children in Denver, Milwaukee, and Cincinnati. The Patterson Foundation grant to OHA helped to begin a school-based dental program with local partners in Alachua County. All schools served by SAA treatment partners have 50% or more children receiving free and reduced meals.
