GREAT THINGS HAPPEN HEREBarry Sohn MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT/COO

The fall season is typically the busiest time of year here at the Soloway JCC and this year should be no exception. In addition to our recently updated and upgraded Fitness Centre which is getting positive reviews, we now have a newly renovated indoor salt water pool, and our excellent aquatics programs will be better than ever.

We just completed another extremely successful camp season with numbers exceeding our expectations and I am looking forward to keeping those campers in the Centre throughout the year to participate in Just 4 Kids, an exciting new variation on our After School Care Program. Just 4 Kids participants will enjoy themed afternoons, such as art, building, fun with food, and gym games. There is also time for homework and a kosher snack.

It is with great excitement that we officially launch our Family Life Centre. Families with young children will experience a variety of fun new programs such as Monkey Rock Music, Baby Sensory, Sportball

and Parenting Workshops in addition to our ever popular Shabbat Shalom and Motorin’ Munchkins which will now fall under the Family Life Centre umbrella.

I look forward to celebrating my first Rosh Hashanah in Ottawa and want to wish you all a healthy and joyful new year.

A tribute gift not only recognizes the special times in someone’s life: a birthday, anniversary, graduation, a new baby or other important milestones, it also supports the important work of the SJCC.

This is an extraordinary way to say thank you, recognize a job well done, or to remember the passing of a loved one. Give a gift that touches the heart, while it betters the lives of the Ottawa Jewish community.

Tribute cards can be designated for specific programs, or gifts can be unrestricted and will be designated to the area of greatest need. For every donation received, a beautifully designed tribute card will be mailed to the recipient.

Doug determines to seek out the secrets of his parent’s presumably happy fifty-five year marriage in a film that explores just what happens when everything you think you knew about your family is suddenly thrown into question.

HEART WISE EXERCISE

The Soloway JCC and The University of Ottawa Heart Institute have teamed up to offer safe and effective programs for people with cardiac disease.

Exercise programs that carry the Heart Wise logo are most suitable for those with cardiac disease or those who may want to assure themselves that the programs are heart friendly. We are proud to offer Vitality Plus, Aquawaves, After Work Energizer, Silver’n Strong, Aqua Arthritis and Post Stroke Aquafit all of which meet the Heart Wise criteria.

All Heart Wise Exercise Programs:• Provide health screening

for all participants.

• Accept participants with a known history of cardiac disease (with physicians’ approval).

• Allow participants to exercise at low intensity and have progressive options to increase intensity.

• Incorporate and encourage warm-up, cool down and self monitoring.

• Encourage regular, daily aerobic exercise.

• All programs must have an emergency plan that is documented and known to all leaders, including current CPR certification, phone access to EMS and the presence of an Automatic External Defibrillator

“Heart Wise programs are designed to accommodate persons with cardiac conditions. Specifically, the programs consist of low to moderate levels of intensity and encourage participants to exercise at an appropriate level”

2. What is the difference between Heart Wise programs and other fitness programs?

“In some cases there are very few differences. Heart Wise programs are usually regular fitness classes that have been adapted to the needs of people with cardiac conditions. Non Heart Wise programs are of course safe and effective for clients who are physically able to undertake higher levels of intensity and/or more demanding exercise.”

3. If I have a heart problem should I contact my physician before I register in a fitness program?

“Yes, part of the Heart Wise designation is that all participants receive medical approval from their physician before they start a fitness program”

4. I am concerned about safety in a fitness class and my level of exertion.“You are strongly recommended to follow the exercise prescription outlined by your physician. Heart Wise fitness programs provide a very gradual warm- up and your instructor will provide you with exercise guidelines and exercise options to help you reach your recommended level of intensity”

5. What emergency plan is in place if I have a cardiac episode?

“All Heart Wise program locations have an emergency plan, have phone access to EMS and have an AED (automatic external defibrillator) on site”.

6. Is a Heart Wise Exercise fitness program all that I require?

“It is recommended that everyone do 30 minutes of aerobic exercise daily (i.e. walking, cycling, x-c skiing, swimming, fitness class, etc.)”

In an effort to keep our pool safe and properly maintained we must periodically close the pool for minor repairs. We will do our best to notify our members in advance, and we apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

SALT WATER POOLThe Levitank pool is a 4 lane, 25m Main Pool with a beach-like ramp, therapeutic hot tub, shallow baby pool, slide, and patio lounge.

A salt water pool means a healthier swim without the itchy, burning red eyes or strong chlorine smell that usually accompanies a dip in the pool. The mild saline feels soft on your skin and it has been proven to be advantageous for asthmatics and allergy prone swimmers.

The pool office handles first aid and emergency response for the entire Soloway JCC, and features a small Aquatic Pro Shop with discount prices on goggles, caps, and other items commonly needed by our swimmers.

GENERAL POOL & HOT TUB SCHEDULEThe pool is open from the time the building opens to 30 min. before the building closes (some exceptions). Swimmers will find one lap lane open at all times except during group lessons and major swim team practices.

Our hot tub is also open from the time the building opens to 30 min. before closing.

NEW ADMISSION STANDARDS FOR CHILDRENNew standards have been issued by the Office of the Chief Coroner to assist lifeguards in maintaining adequate surveillance over the whereabouts and activities of young bathers while they are inside the pool enclosure.

• Children under the age of 10 must be accompanied by a parent, or guardian of at least 12 years of age, who is responsible for their direct supervision. The ratio of swimmers to parent or guardian is 4:1

• Children under the age of 6 may not be admitted to the swimming pool unless they are accompanied by a parent or guardian who is responsible for their direct supervision, with a maximum of two children for each parent or guardian

• Guardians are responsible for the children in their care while in the facility and must directly supervise the children at all times.

CHILDREN/YOUTH PROGRAMS

Lifesaving Society’s Pre-School Program

Parent and Tot 1 (3-12 months) Parent and Tot 2 (12-24 months) Parent and Tot 3 (22-36 months) This exciting program structures in-water interaction between parent and child to stress the importance of play in developing water-positive attitudes and skills. Activities are planned based on the child’s maturity so parents register in the level appropriate for their child’s age.

Preschool A(3-5 yrs) 1:3 We’ll help these little swimmers jump into the water and learn to float, glide and kick with assistance. They’ll learn the importance of staying “within arms reach” and become comfortable putting their faces in and blowing bubbles.

Preschool B(3-5 yrs) 1:3 These little swimmers will jump in, on their own, and learn to float, glide and kick with an aid. They’ll learn to put on a lifejacket/Personal Floatation Device and learn to move safely through the water on their front and back.

Preschool C(3-5 yrs) 1:3 These little swimmers will jump into chest-deep water, learn to float, glide and kick on their own and retrieve an object from the bottom. They’ll gain exposure to deep water and learn the basics of rhythmic breathing.

Preschool D(3-5 yrs) 1:5 Preschoolers will jump into deep water, kick on their front and back, tread water and learn basic front and back crawl. They’ll learn the importance of swimming with a buddy and wearing a PFD/lifejacket.

Preschool E(3-5 yrs) 1:5 Advanced preschoolers learn how to react if they fall unexpectedly into deep water. They’ll develop breath control, master short swims using front and back crawl, and begin developing whip kick.

In order to better serve the needs of the our beginner swimmers, all Preschool A, B and C classes will now be offered with a maximum of three children in each group.

GREAT THINGS HAPPEN HERE

Swimmer 1 1:5 These beginners will become comfortable opening their eyes and exhaling underwater. They will be introduced to floating, gliding and kicking and jumping into the water. This level is geared to those who are over 5, have not learned to submerge underwater and have little or no swimming experience.

Swimmer 21:5 Participants will jump into deep water and learn to support themselves with an aid. They will learn the foundation of effective whip kick, build confidence in both deep and shallow water, and develop front and back crawl over short distances.

Swimmer 31:6 These swimmers will dive, jump and roll into the water and develop water-smart attitudes. They will improve their front and back crawl, tread water, add propulsion to their whip kick, swim underwater and continue to build endurance with swims of up to 50 meters.

Swimmer 41:6 These swimmers will refine both entry and surface dives and learn eggbeater kick, sculling and breaststroke while continuing to improve their front and back crawl and work towards a 100 meter endurance swim.

Swimmer 51:6 These swimmers will master shallow dives, eggbeater and foot-first sculling. Surface dives will take them down to underwater swims while sprints and interval training will improve both the efficiency and endurance of their breaststroke, front and back crawls.

Swimmer 61:6 These swimmers will perfect their swimming strokes while building up to a 300 meter endurance swim. They will perfect a variety of movement and underwater skills while continuing to build fitness and efficiency through sprints and interval swim training.
