DESCRIPTION

Professor: Lars Spuybroek. Semester dealt with John Ruskin's notion of vital beauty. Design explored through the prism of 'Opulence' and all of its potential manifestations. Final project is a community center located in an infill site in downtown Atlanta, GA.

PROGRAM

The site chosen for this project is a 4600 square foot piece of land at the corner of Broad Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Drive. Since the empty lot is located between two existing buildings, the general approach was to design a structure that has the characteristics of an infill project. Research done during the 1st half of the semseter on Opulence dictated an architecture focused on the interior. The nature of experiences with opulent structures of the highest order requires one to be fully immersed in a space in order for the effect to be viable. Therefore, the compact, infill site allows the architecture to turn itself inwards and focus on interior details: corners, transitions, niches, thresholds, etc. Community members will enter the building frontally from Broad Street and thus his/her primary experiences will take place within the the building.

SITE ATTRIBUTES:

Broad Street is one-way, which reduces automobile traffic

Plenty of off-street parking at either ends of the site (between Mitchell and MLK)

Trees, light posts, bus stop canopies, and low-rise buildings give the street a nice pedestrian scale

Has the potential to become a vibrant streetscape and a revitalized part of downtown

There are few vacant properties, which means the street remains active throughout the day

Directly adjacent to the lot are a market, eye care store, and a drug store

It is within walking distance of: 5 Points MARTA Station Woodruff Park Georgia State University Underground Atlanta Restaurants and shopping outlets

The site’s zoning designation SPI-1 coincides with Atlanta’s plan of “imagine Downtown”, implemented in 2006

Imagine downtown encourages more mixed-use, urban development in an attempt to create a vibrant, 24-hr environment where people can live, work, meet, and play

What could it be / A club signifies a group with a common interest or pursuit

Gentlemen’s Club Community Center Hang-out Center Learning and Technology Center Education and Technology Center Community Revitalizer Program statement / “In a diverse world, we need diverse solutions, flexible spaces, multi-purpose rooms, creating an atmosphere of interaction; it should not make people feel static and should bring the community together for a common goal”

Potential Spaces to be housed here / Multi-purpose room Library Theater Bar Office space Conference Room Kitchen M/W Restroom Exercise Room Day Care / Child Care Entrance / Lobby / Atrium / Reception Livable / Green Roof Art / Display Space Classrooms Teen / Adolescent Center Rental Space for: Meetings, Special Events Mechanical / Storage Circulation (+/- 20% Net Sq. The first ways to divide up the program would be the typical public / private / semi-private grouped by usage grouped by adjacency square footage analysis

I want to approach the program, however, in terms of The Opulence Level of Each Space

and whether this could inform adjacencies, groupings, etc. in a different way than what a typical program analysis would entail

RESULTING BOUNDARY

object / wall / moulding create a boundary that blurs the line between foreground / background

as more objects are ‘stacked’ into the room, each abstracted result shows the level of inherent opulence these objects possess

corner of wall creates a boundary that separates stacking (right side) from an empty zone (le side)

while the chair leg becomes the boundary, the background becomes the stacking object

When a gradient map is applied, the resul ng abstrac on image tends to exhibit similar stacking / layering characteris cs analagous to the Henderson Image

Blur Filter Applied

HDR Toning Map Applied

The basic principle behind the diagram involves its use of the eye to ‘scan’ the image from le to right. Any detec ons of interference from the baseline amount of Opulence (shown on the le ) is represented by a ‘blip’ that corresponds to A) Its posi on in space and B) Its inherent level of Opulence

A script was developed here that allowed us to take the rules we found in the Henderson image and recreate them on a blank canvas. As each curve approaches each other, the center curve defl ects to accommodate the new geometry

The characteris cs of Opulence can be found here in the Henderson imageas well as the resul ng Victorian Interior abstrac on. Many elements, many forms, lines and colors stacked upon each other, and an overall sense of variety are features common to both images

As the points become more numberous and vectors more varied, the ensuing curve becomes more complex.

Virtually any closed curve can be derived from this system.

STACKING OPULENCE - WILLIAM BURGES INTERIORFREQUENCY MAPS

Gradient maps applied to other environments exhibit similar characteris cs. They tend to fl a en out the image allowing each image’s inherent Opulence to be seen
