Manage Mycotoxin RiskMycotoxins are always a concern, but this year with excessive heat and drought they are something you should be prepared to deal with as production of mycotoxins is usually associated with extreme weather conditions. You can check for signs of mycotoxin potential while crops are still in the field by looking for infected corn kernels and ears. If extensive mold is apparent, that field should be harvested as soon as possible to prevent further loss. Harvested crops also require good management to reduce mycotoxin risk. This can be done through proper storage and use of mold inhibitors such as propionic and acetic acids.

Overexposure to mycotoxins can reduce feed consumption and therefore reduce productivity; increase incidence of disease (metabolic & infectious); cause digestive disorders, nervous behavior, and reproductive issues; and can sometimes result in death. The effects of the mycotoxins and the ingestion of the mold itself on an animal will depend on the level of mycotoxins present in the feed, amount of feed ingested, duration of exposure, physiological state and degree of environmental or physiological stress on the animal. Reduce the risk of problems by checking moisture levels, looking for mold, and removing and spoiled feed before feeding.

Use of a feed additive that limits toxin absorption as feed is being digested is a way to help alleviate or mitigate the toxic effects of contaminated feedstuffs. Keep an eye on feedstuffs and cattle for the presence of mycotoxins. The complete removal of problematic feed may be necessary to ensure animal health. Consult with your veterinarian or nutritionist to determine what product may be best for you.

Limit Mycotoxin Absorption

With the risk of mycotoxins in feed being so high due to widespread drought conditions, limit the amount your animals are absorbing with the following feed additive options.
