The Okotoks Art Gallery gratefully acknowledges funding from the Canada Council for the Arts for this exhibit.
As an installation artist, José Luis Torres’s
projects inhabit a territory somewhere
between sculpture and architecture where
the dialogue between the location and the
art directly influences the configuration
of his pieces. Torres will use the Okotoks
Art Gallery as a site to engage with
his ideas of “transformation, links and
movement”. Que nos rodea – Around Us
also connects with ideas of transition and
displacement which often haunt the rapid
development of places and communities
like Okotoks. Torres experiments with
many different ways of mixing materials
to create simple, organically composed
pieces of work. Interacting with the public
during construction, Torres will take a
profusion of randomly chosen objects and
recycled materials to create unexpected
and unlikely combinations. The completed
installation will stimulate a relationship
between the gallery space, the sculpture
itself and the individual interacting with
it, thus allowing visitors to experience and
experiment with the gallery and the way it
is filled in a completely new way.

Wanner’s botanical watercolour paintings
and video works serve as critiques of our
continued human drive for dominance over
nature, as well as our complacency towards
that dominance. Her art practice draws
not only on art-historical conventions, but
also on various scientific objective means
of observing and representing the natural
world – botany, genetics, and the camera.
Both Wanner’s watercolours and video
works attempt to operate between two
Romantic realms: fascination with mastery
over natural processes and unease with
what our technology might unleash.

The solo exhibition Immuto examines
botanical art and nature cinema for a
world dominated by “second nature” – a
virtual simulation of pristine “first nature”
wrought by the revolution in information,
biotechnologies, and consumer culture.
Instead of directly observing existing
plant specimens, as did nineteenth-
century Romantics such as John Ruskin,
Calgary artist Jennifer Wanner works from
collages of reconfigured and imagined
plants she constructs from images of the
most common genetically modified plant
crops, including corn, soy, tobacco, cotton,
tomato, and canola. In making these
works, images of various GMO plants are
printed from the Internet, then precisely
cut out, and recombined with one another
to produce a new mediated specimen to
be closely observed and translated into
watercolour or stop-motion animation.

“My work dearly loves to laugh and chat
and to make friends and if you get close
enough you might find yourself befriended.
I believe in giggling and daydreaming and
that when these things combine they can
take you into the most wondrous worlds.
I believe my work lives in one of those

Dear Little Friends is a project that brings a
drawing exhibition into reality. It takes the
make believe of a drawing and creates the
tangible evidence of existence by turning
it into a three dimensional form. Dear
Little Friends is referring to twenty letter
carriers, twenty little machines designed
for the safe delivery of your most tender
noted, thoughts and warmth. They are
machines equipped for all forms of travel.
These twenty machines, initially ink drawn
postcards will take full form through thin,
delicate porcelain, glazed in full colour.
The pieces are props that when handled
personify and therefore enable a world of
fairy-tale to be glimpsed.
They will hop and dance, fly, jump and skip.
or some will decide to sail as a ship.
Whatever their mode they’ll arrive in delight,
then with your response they’ll be off like a kite.
Use them with care respect what they do,
if you are kind and you are gentle, they’ll work
just right for you.

Under Box Mountain | Debra rushfeldt
Jan 10 to Feb 22 | Large gallery
In this series of charcoal drawings, Debra
Rushfeldt has created an intimate, subjective
portrait of the unique rural neighbourhood
of Crescent Bay, Nakusp, B.C. Through
exploring her neighbours’ properties,
Rushfeldt was discovered contrasting
themes in everyday life – creation and decay,
connection and isolation, potential and loss.
By isolating the subject matter, Rushfeldt
captures the magical and intense energy in
the ordinary and discarded.

Greg Pyra imagines himself as a traveller

social movements and significant migration
to urban centres.

Alberta culture Days
A cultural Harvest in Okotoks |
September 27 to 29
Alberta Culture Days began in 2008 as
Alberta Arts Day, a one-day event to
recognize the value of Alberta’s arts
and cultural communities. Since then, it
has expanded into a vibrant, three-day,
province wide celebration that has helped
inspire the creation of Culture Days - a
pan-Canadian movement to raise the
awareness, accessibility, participation and
engagement of all Canadians in the arts
and cultural life of their communities.
In 2012, thousands of Albertans discovered,
experienced and celebrated our artistic
sector, heritage, cultural diversity and
provincial pride through 1,235 events
in 81 communities. Alberta Culture
Days 2013, September 27 to 29, will
continue to showcase the province’s arts,
multicultural, heritage and nonprofit/
voluntary organizations; creative industries
and individual artists, while encouraging
all Albertans to discover the important
contributions of culture to a prosperous,
vibrant society.

Where did the Sheep River get its name?
What fish swim in the river? How long is it?
What industries relied on it? How often has
the Sheep River flooded? Answers to these
questions can be found in the museum’s
summer exhibit ‘Our Sheep River.’
This exhibit celebrates our relationship with
the Sheep River including its vital role in
our community’s history and in our present
lives. It aims to provide visitors with a multi-
layered understanding of the Sheep River
(geologically, environmentally, culturally
and socially), and to improve awareness
and appreciation for its existence.
StOrieS OF OKOtOKSpermanent exhibit
This permanent exhibit explores Okotoks’
special landscape, compelling characters,
and bright future. Photos and artifacts
help bring to life the stories of the town’s
rich natural and cultural heritage, with a
focus on early immigration, domestic life,
education and commerce. Connect to
Okotoks’ history and discover some of the
fascinating people who have helped make
Okotoks the dynamic town it is today.
Two of the exhibit rooms – the kitchen
and school room -- have been recently
enhanced with motion sensor audio. This
allows the museum to incorporate sound
clips from its women’s oral history project
of which many of the participants have
since passed away. Museum visitors can
now hear these women’s voices as they
share their compelling stories of growing
up in Okotoks.

treASUreS FrOMtHe MUSeUM cOLLectiOnNot everything in our museum collection
represents the early settlement of Okotoks.
Some artifacts really aren’t that old. Take,
for example, the cell phone donated by
long-time Okotoks resident Albert Haynes.
It is an early 1980s re-chargeable model
affectionately called the ‘brick’ phone.
Its portability was revolutionary, but its
long antenna and bulky size made it a bit
awkward and some users wore a leather
holster to hold it on their hip. Younger
visitors to the museum marvel at the
phone’s massive size compared to the
compact cell phones of today that can
easily slip into one’s pocket.
It just goes to show that the world around
us is changing rapidly, especially with
technology, and that something even as
young as 30 years old has a place in the
museum.
treASUreS FrOMtHe ArcHiVAL cOLLectiOn Earlier this spring, the Okotoks Museum
and Archives received an archival donation
consisting of original documents and
photographs from the history book,
“Gladys Ridge Through the Years.” This
book was produced by the Gladys Women’s
Institute which began the project in 1962
and published it in 1965. It records the
history of the Gladys Ridge community,
located east of Okotoks, as well as the
pioneering families who settled in that
area. The community gets its name from
Gladys Harkness, whose husband would
often bring the district’s mail from High
River during the 1880s. Early settlers would
say “Let’s go to Gladys’ for the mail.” When
a post office was proposed for that district
in 1890, ‘Gladys’ seemed the logical choice.
Gladys’ husband Charles was the first
postmaster.
