hile still a young art form by world standards, our precious American music of jazz is over a century old now and has had to survive the passing of its pioneers and early masters. Fortunately new generations of creative artists have always come forward, finding inspiration in the legacy of the great jazz legends and updating the music to speak to their own special time, place, and circumstances. This balance of continuity and reinvention keeps the music alive and relevant and sustains our faith that jazz will keep swinging long into the future. At Gold Coast Jazz Society, we see that future in the young people who benefit from our educational programs—elementary school kids improving their academic skills through the

innovative JazzSLAM program, older kids learning to jam with the pros at our First Friday Jazz Jams, and the very talented student musicians supported by our Jeanette Russell scholarships. So we know the future of jazz is bright. Still, this past summer was a sad one, as we lost so many true musical giants. Pianist and composer Horace Silver, the great bassist Charlie Haden, Little Jimmy Scott and his sweet contralto have all gone silent. Lionel Ferbos, who was blowing his trumpet loud and clear in the French Quarter at 103, has finally left to join Gabriel’s band. And Kenny Drew, Jr., who gave a majestic solo piano concert for us in the Amaturo Theater a few years back, has also left us far too soon. Closer to home a quieter giant of jazz, our dear friend, and founder of Gold Coast Jazz, Fred Ruffner died on August 12th. Fred was a renaissance man and a paragon of what we now call “the greatest generation.” A World War II veteran, he was a man of letters, an entrepreneur, a philanthropist, and—among many other interests and talents—a hard-core jazz aficionado. I cherish the years I spent with Fred on the GCJS board. He set the highest standards of integrity and artistry. No matter what else we undertook he insisted that a series of top-notch concerts could never be compromised. And he led by example, leaving behind an inspiring legacy in his second hometown of Fort Lauderdale, as a founder of the Broward Public Library foundation, a generous champion of the Bonnet House and so many other local treasures, and the visionary who built a sorely needed home for jazz here some 23 years ago. Just as we count on the young jazz players of today to carry the music forward, it now falls on all of us to carry on Fred’s mission, to keep Gold Coast Jazz alive and thriving through our memberships, our subscriptions, our advocacy, our volunteer work, our donations, and—most importantly—our attendance (with family and friends!) to savor the music he so loved. I thank you all for your support, as we take up the challenge. Gold Coast Jazz Society is stronger than ever, and with world-class artists like Arturo Sandoval, Bill Charlap, Janis Siegel & Shelly Berg, Bill Allred, Mike Longo, Michael Kaeshammer, and Dr. Lonnie Smith coming to our stage, I know our founder would be proud.

the annual Key West Literary Seminar. For a year in the early '90s Ruffner was publisher of Gold Coast Magazine, and focused on the cultural life of South Florida and contributions of local philanthropic organizations and their leaders. As founding president of the Friends of Las Olas, he worked for the beautification of Las Olas Blvd. and promoted the adoption of the wave motif which has been carried out on AIA as well. Ruffner also founded the Phileas Society to celebrate the Bicentennial of Christopher Columbus at local venues. With his wife Mary, who predeceased him, he hosted numerous cultural and philanthropic events during their years at Manga Reva, their Francis Abreu-designed house on the New River. All these activities were made possible by Ruffner's success as the founder of Gale Research Co., one of the leading reference publishers for libraries in the world, with more than 400 employees and 1,000 titles in print, including a small office in Fort Lauderdale. Much of the books' content forms the backbone of electronic products widely used today, according to a former officer of Gale, which was sold in 1986 for $66 million. He and his son Peter then founded the reference publisher Omnigraphics, with offices in Detroit. Ruffner is survived by his son Frederick G. Ruffner, III, founder of Avanti Press, Peter E. Ruffner, who continues to lead Omnigraphics, and his granddaughters, Zoe, Jessa, and Isabella. A memorial service was held on September 20th at Grosse Pointe Memorial Church in Grosse Pointe Farms, MI, and a celebration of his life is planned in Fort Lauderdale.

Frederick G. Ruffner, Jr., philanthropist, publisher and longtime Fort Lauderdale resident, died August 12 in Grosse Pointe, MI, following a long illness. He had just turned 88. Best-known in Florida as the leader of cultural organizations that reflected his professional and personal interest in books, libraries and jazz, he initially founded the Friends of the Fort Lauderdale Library and led support for the bond issue that resulted in the

construction of the Main Library and expansion of the County Library System. He also founded the Gold Coast Jazz Society in 1992. In the '90s he extended the outreach of the Society through the Bonnet House Jazz Fest held on the grounds of the Bartlett Estate. Other ongoing cultural organizations that Ruffner launched and supported include: the Broward Public Library Foundation which continues to present an annual book and author event known as Lit/Live, and Literary Landmarks Register, launched at Bahia Mar in honor of John D. MacDonald and since adopted by the American Library Association, resulting in over a hundred landmarks nationwide. Florida Center for the Book, the first affiliate of the Center for the Book in the Library of Congress, was another book- focused organization he sponsored, as was the Fontaneda Society, a group of rare book collectors who supported the Bienes Center for the Literary Arts (now the Museum for the Modern Book). One of Ruffner's earliest organizations was the Council for Florida Libraries which conducted a statewide book and author festival, and writing workshops; it lives on through

South Florida Jazz Orchestra for An Evening with Arturo Sandoval on February 13. Sandoval’s virtuosic technical ability and his brilliant multi-faceted style will amaze you. This nine-time Grammy winner was the 2013 recipient of the Presidential Medal of

Freedom. The musicians of the SFJO are some of the most experienced professionals in the country, having performed and toured with many of the greatest artists in Jazz and Popular music. These musicians’ careers include tenure with the Big Bands of Woody Herman, Buddy Rich, and Maynard Ferguson, and artists from Stan Getz, Dave Grusin, and James Moody to Frank Sinatra, Paul Anka, and Joe Williams. It will be a New Orleans Mardi Gras party again on March 13 with Michael Kaeshammer and his smokin’ piano and vocals. This young vibrant Canadian import is a veritable “triple-threat,” blessed with piano virtuosity, vocal ability, and charisma. “Kaeshammer has piano technique to burn, and has an acrobatic way with a grand piano,” says John Terauds of the Toronto Star. He continues to surprise audiences and inspire awe with his elaborate arrangements and improvisations. A true showman, his high octane performance and masterful abilities have earned him international acclaim. April 8 marks the return of The Mighty B3 with jazz organ legend, Dr. Lonnie Smith. A local jazz fixture

in Fort Lauderdale in his early days, Smith is an unparalleled musician, composer, performer and recording artist. For over five decades he has mastered the Hammond B-3 organ and has been featured on over seventy albums. He has

also recorded and performed with a virtual “Who’s Who” of the jazz world. His “A” list trio includes Jonathan Kreisberg and Johnathan Blake. Wrapping up the season on May 13 is a concert featuring jazz pianist Mike Longo and members of the Gold Coast Jazz Society Band in Bebop and Beyond. Longo was discovered in Fort Lauderdale by Cannonball Adderley. He went on to study and record with Oscar Peterson and was Dizzy Gillespie’s arranger for twenty-two years. Guitarist and Gold Coast Jazz Society Music Director, Martin Hand will lead the band for this concert. To purchase a subscription call 954-524-0805. For single concert tickets call the AutoNation Box Office at 800-745-3000 (Ticketmaster) or www.browardcenter.org or www.goldcoastjazz.org.

It’s been another great year for the Gold Coast Jazz Society’s Jeanette M. Russell Jazz Scholarship program. This was our 12th year for the scholarship competition and we had another stellar group of students compete. Thirty students were selected by our scholarship committee to receive scholarship awards. Awards were based upon financial need and artistic merit. Since 2002, the Gold Coast Jazz Society has awarded over $350,000 in scholarships to qualified students thanks to a bequest from the estate of Jeanette Russell. This year’s scholarships were awarded from the Jeanette M. Russell Scholarship program and a donation from the Robert G. Friedman Foundation. Both Jeanette Russell and Robert Friedman were avid jazz fans and their love of jazz lives on through their planned gifts for the Society’s jazz scholarship program. Over the summer, students attended jazz camps at Baldwin Wallace University, Brubeck Summer Jazz Colony/ Sierra Nevada College, Centrum/Port Townsend, Washington, Jamey Aebersold Jazz Workshop/University of Kentucky, Monterey Jazz Festival, New York Jazz Symposium/Snow College, Northern Illinois University and the Young Musicians Camp/University of Miami. Students enjoyed a wide variety of jazz experiences. Scholarship awardee, Anthony Hervey, travelled to Japan as a part of the Monterey Jazz Festival’s Next Generation Jazz Orchestra and will also perform at this year’s Monterey Jazz Festival in September. Students from Dillard High School’s Center for the Arts who received a jazz scholarship include: Christian Cummings, Sax; Sydney Henry, Drums; Anthony Hervey, Trumpet; Gabrielle Hervey, Sax; Nigel Hervey, Sax; Jake Pardo, Guitar; Donovan Perry, Trumpet; Henry Ulett, Piano. Students from the New World School of the Arts include: Roberto Acosta, Jr., Piano; Joshua Bermudez, Guitar; Tyler Goodman, Sax, Clarinet, and Piano; Ricardo Guerra, Drums; Cristian Hernandez, Bass; Michael Howe, Sax; Alexander Larionova, Trombone; Joseph Miller, Sax; Max Rubi, Trumpet; Cassius Torres, Trombone; Victor Valdes, Drums and Francis Zamora, Trombone. Parkway Middle School student, Brandon Richardson, Trombone, also received a scholarship award. The following students are receiving a scholarship for tuition assistance to attend a college or university to study jazz: Zachary Auslander, Guitar, Berklee College of Music; Matthew Falgowski, Piano, University of North Florida; Markus Howell, Sax, Michigan State University; Zachary McKinney, Drums, Michigan State University; Jake Ricke, Bass, Florida State University; Carla Robinson, Piano, Northern Illinois University; Franchesca Romeo, Piano, Michigan State University and Ben Stocker, Sax, Michigan State University. We applaud the efforts of these talented students to pursue their interest in jazz.

The Gold Coast Jazz Society would like to thank the family of Mr. Robert Friedman for their support of our organization’s scholarship awards. Thanks to a donation from the Robert G. Friedman Foundation, five college students have received tuition assistance for the coming year.

I had a wonderful experience at Centrum this past summer. It was by far the best camp I have been to. I learned a lot and saw some of the greatest combinations of musicians in the world. I would like to thank Gold Coast for supporting me and many other young jazz musicians.

- Jake Pardo

Jazz camp was an eye opening experience that allowed me to hone my skills and develop my musicality among some of the greatest young jazz musicians in the country. During my week stay at Centrum, I discovered a whole community of jazz musicians around the country and the world that are just like me. I wouldn't have been able to attend this wonderful workshop if it wasn't for the help of the Gold Coast Jazz Society and their generous contribution towards my studies.

- Francis Zamora

I am very grateful to the Gold Coast Jazz Society for the opportunity to attend the renowned Brubeck Summer Jazz Colony 2014. I was one of only 28 musicians chosen worldwide for this amazing week-long experience at Sierra Nevada College in Nevada. Were it not for Gold Coast, I would not have been able to attend, even though the

audition process is very competitive. To play with and learn from musicians of such a high caliber, and to come to the attention of master teachers is something that I don't take for granted.

- Max Holm

I will be attending Northern Illinois University this fall to study jazz piano. Being an out of state student I grudgingly look forward to out of state fees. However, I am very grateful that the Gold Coast scholarship will

be aiding me as I march forward on this path of jazz.- Carla Robinson

I would like to thank you all for opportunity and experience you have given to me and my family. To travel, meet and make new friends is a blessing and something I will carry with me always. The faculty and members of Snow College in Utah treated us with kindness and patience, and the professors gave good advice. I want to thank you again for the privilege you have given me and my family, helping me to "pace myself." I can't wait till next year. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

- Donovan Perry

I have been granted many opportunities through the Gold Coast Jazz Society. I can remember clearly my sophomore year of high school when my school's jazz combo opened for the guitarist Bucky Pizzarelli. Backstage I was able to meet one of my heroes and even have a little lesson with him. I have had the amazing opportunity to travel to various summer camps because of the scholarships they provide for many young ambitious high school musicians. At these camps I had the opportunity to study with the likes of guitarist Julian Lage, pianist Benny Green, and bassist extraordinaire John Clayton. All of these experiences, of meeting my heroes and studying with some of them, have really helped shape the musician I am today. This would be impossible without the Gold Coast Jazz Society. On that note, thanks GCJS, you are all forever in my heart.

- Zachary Auslander

My experience at the Jamey Aebersold camp in Louisville Kentucky was an incredible experience. I have never been to a camp of that nature before and I have to say that it was a great first experience at that kind of camp. The people there are incredibly nice and helpful. The teachers knew their craft and were very helpful when I didn’t quite understand something fully. The teachers, as well as Jamey himself, were very approachable. Any question or comment I had at any time I could tell them. enjoyed the camp and the people I met there very much and I will go again sometime in the near future.

- Joseph Miller

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the scholarship committee for the music scholarship. I attended the second session of the Jamey Aebersold workshop. I learned a lot of things that not only helped with my improvisation, but with my ability to play my instrument as well. There was a lot of freedom, which made it enjoyable too. The University of Louisville had a huge, beautiful campus which allowed for an amazing experience!

- Tyler Goodman

I was very happy to receive the Gold Coast Scholarship. I choose to go to the Frost School of Music at the University of Miami. I enjoyed with professionals such as Dr. Ed Maina who exposed me to different concepts of Jazz. I thank the Gold Coast Jazz Society for this great experience.
