Language

I have been taking Spanish classes at SSC for the past two years. Recently I was in Guatemala working with Habitat for Humanity, building sanitary latrines. Happily, I discovered that I was able to communicate in Spanish with the masons supervising our building projects, with merchants and vendors, with hotel and restaurant staff , and with the children at our work sites. Additionally, I sponsor a high school student, and had a chance to chat with him about his school program and his family. Although I have been on other building trips with Habitat, this was the fi rst trip in which I was able to speak in Spanish. Being able to communicate

with Spanish speakers, without resorting to a translator, made for a much more enriching experience.

Learning a new language as an adult can be challenging, however the teachers at SSC make it interesting and fun. The end result of being able to communicate in a new language has made the hard work worthwhile.

MEET GUILLERMO SANDOVAL!

Guillermo is a Student Success Specialist in Orientation and Advising at South Seattle College who is also a Continuing Education student.

I’ve had my ukulele for about 7 years now and I’ve tried to self-teach myself several times throughout the years. I fi gured I’d fi nally learn it from the basics. I was happy to see that a beginning ukulele class was being off ered right where I work!

I didn’t know anyone in the class, but I think that made it even more fun. I was able to share a space with people that all had a common goal: to learn the ukulele fundamentals.

I knew I had a lot to learn going into it, but didn’t realize how little I actually knew. I appreciate the instructor’s constant encouragement to ask questions.

I always like to learn new things. I’m considering taking a French or American Sign Language class. Or, maybe learn more about photography.
