Over13 the13 past13 1513 years13 our13 perspective13 on13 tackling13 information13 interoperability13 problems13 for13 Web-shy‐based13 scholarship13 has13 evolved13 significantly13 In13 this13 presentation13 we13 look13 back13 at13 three13 efforts13 that13 we13 have13 been13 involved13 in13 that13 aptly13 illustrate13 this13 evolution13 OAI-shy‐PMH13 (Open13 Archives13 Initiative-shy‐Protocol13 for13 Metadata13 Harvesting13 1999)13 OAI-shy‐ORE13 (Open13 Archives13 Initiative-shy‐Object13 Reuse13 and13 Exchange13 2006)13 and13 Memento13 (2009)13 Understanding13 that13 no13 interoperability13 specification13 is13 neutral13 we13 attempt13 to13 characterize13 the13 perspectives13 and13 technical13 toolkits13 that13 provided13 the13 basis13 for13 these13 endeavors13 With13 that13 regard13 we13 consider13 repository-shy‐centric13 and13 Web-shy‐centric13 interoperability13 perspectives13 and13 the13 use13 of13 a13 Linked13 Data13 or13 a13 RESTHATEAOS13 (Representational13 State13 TransferHypertext13 As13 The13 Engine13 Of13 Application13 State)13 technology13 stack13 respectively13 We13 consider13 that13 the13 RESTHATEAOS13 approach13 has13 the13 lowest13 barrier13 to13 entry13 because13 it13 is13 directly13 based13 on13 the13 omnipresent13 HTTP13 Therefore13 we13 suggest13 that13 this13 approach13 has13 the13 best13 chance13 for13 achieving13 a13 coarse13 yet13 meaningful13 level13 of13 interoperability13 across13 nodes13 that13 play13 a13 role13 in13 Web-shy‐based13 scholarly13 communication13 and13 research13 We13 provide13 examples13 of13 common13 patterns13 in13 Web-shy‐based13 scholarship13 that13 can13 be13 tackled13 using13 this13 approach13 including13 the13 landing13 page13 pattern13 resource13 versioning13 creating13 snapshots13 for13 example13 of13 software13 in13 scholarly13 repositories

13 13 Academic13 publishers13 claim13 that13 they13 add13 value13 to13 scholarly13 communications13 primarily13 by13 coordinating13 reviews13 and13 contributing13 text13 during13 publication13 These13 contributions13 come13 at13 a13 considerable13 cost13 US13 academic13 libraries13 paid13 $1713 billion13 for13 serial13 subscriptions13 in13 200813 alone13 and13 this13 number13 continues13 to13 rise13 13 Library13 budgets13 in13 contrast13 are13 flat13 at13 best13 and13 not13 increasing13 at13 anywhere13 near13 the13 same13 rate13 Several13 institutions13 have13 therefore13 discontinued13 or13 significantly13 scaled13 back13 their13 subscription13 agreements13 with13 commercial13 publishers13 such13 as13 Elsevier13 and13 Wiley-shy‐Blackwell13 At13 the13 University13 of13 California13 Los13 Angeles13 (UCLA)13 we13 have13 investigated13 the13 publishers13 value13 proposition13 by13 conducting13 a13 comparative13 study13 of13 pre-shy‐print13 papers13 and13 their13 post-shy‐print13 counterparts13 We13 have13 two13 working13 assumptions13 1)13 if13 the13 publishers13 argument13 is13 valid13 the13 text13 of13 a13 pre-shy‐print13 paper13 should13 vary13 significantly13 from13 its13 corresponding13 post-shy‐print13 version13 and13 2)13 by13 applying13 standard13 similarity13 measures13 we13 should13 be13 able13 to13 detect13 and13 quantify13 such13 differences13 In13 this13 talk13 we13 present13 our13 preliminary13 results13 based13 on13 pre-shy‐print13 publications13 from13 arXivorg13 and13 their13 post-shy‐print13 counterparts13 obtained13 through13 subscriptions13 held13 by13 the13 UCLA13 Library13 After13 matching13 papers13 via13 their13 digital13 object13 identifiers13 (DOIs)13 we13 applied13 comparative13 analytics13 and13 evaluated13 the13 textual13 similarities13 of13 components13 such13 as13 the13 title13 abstract13 and13 body13 The13 results13 of13 our13 assessment13 suggest13 that13 the13 vast13 majority13 of13 post-shy‐print13 papers13 are13 largely13 indistinguishable13 from13 their13 pre-shy‐print13 versions13 These13 findings13 contribute13 empirical13 indicators13 to13 discussions13 of13 the13 value13 that13 academic13 publishers13 add13 to13 scholarly13 communication13 and13 therefore13 can13 influence13 libraries13 economic13 decisions13 regarding13 access13 to13 scholarly13 publications
