MEMBER NEWS LYN ASSELTA “So very pleased to hear that my painting, Falling

Uphill, was juried into the 27th IAPS (Int'l Assoc. of Pastel Societies) Juried Exhibition~ the Web Show. Many thanks to the jurors and congratulations to the artists who created all the other beautiful works in this show.” You'll be able to view this show soon on www.iapspastel.org

KATHY DETRANO “I just won the 'Art Spirit Foundation Gold

Medal Award for Excellence’ for my pastel Warm Morning at the 87th Grand National Exhibition of the American Artists Professional League in New York City. YIPPEE!!!” And more exciting news: Kathy has been nominated to be on the PSA Board of Governors. The entire PSA membership, including Associates, has already been sent ballots and the votes will be counted in December. Good luck, Kathy!

WENDY DEVARIEUX had (3) pastels accepted to the 27th Art in

Gadsden Art Center Show in Quincy, FL and was awarded Best of Show for her painting Lined Up and Waiting. Wendy sold all three paintings in the show and then sold a fourth painting, a couple of weeks later to a fellow who had already purchased one in the Gadsden show. And to top off a really good month of sales, she sold her painting Just Over There that is currently hanging in the PSNF Members’ Show at the Goetsch Gallery, NWFSC Student Services Center.

MARGARET HAMILTON “I am going to have an exhibit at the FSU

Medical College in January 2016. I will have 15 pastels there.”

DEB LAFOGG DOCHERTY “My painting Marsh Morning was

accepted into the Degas Pastel Society members show. My 18"x 24" pastel, A Quiet Moment was accepted into the 27th IAPS Juried Exhibition - The 2015 Web Show. I have a solo show hanging at the Ernest F. Coe Visitors Center Gallery in Everglades National Park for the month of November.”

CYNDI MARBLE won First Place in the July exhibition of the Kudzu

Art Zone, Norcross, GA for her pastel Final Details. She won four awards at the Georgia National Fair in Perry, GA: First Place for her pastel Fair Nights, Fair Lights, along with a Second Place, Honorable Mention and a Purchase Award. Cyndi was Artist in Residence for 3 days at the fair “doing what I do best, painting and talking”. She also sold two additional paintings at the fair.

CARRIE RAEBURN received her third award at the 43rd Annual PSA

Exhibition: Enduring Brilliance in September for her painting Raining Color. This makes her a Master Pastelist, much to her amazement. She recently returned from a wonderful adventure and workshop with Alan Flattmann in China with much praise for her Chinese hosts: The Ming Gallery and Isabelle & Alex Lim. Carrie is also excited to announce that she will be returning to the role of PSNF President on Jan. 1st when her interim appointment to the PSA Board of Governors draws to a close.

PASTEL PLUS CAMERON HAMPTON DEMO October 17, 2015

Cameron Hampton, PSA and IAPS Masters Circle Recipient, did a free, open to the public, 3-hour demo for us at the Church of Christ Fellowship Hall, Fort Walton Beach, FL.

Using her reference photo, Cameron started with a drawing in vine charcoal on white Canson Mi-Teintes paper. Moving on to color, she began with squiggles of line work in and around her focal point, making sure to repeat the colors elsewhere to aid in both color harmony and movement of the viewer’s eye through the piece.

She then used a hardware store type 1” foam brush, dampened with water and squeezed out, to move the color around a bit. Even though this was Canson paper, the very light and quick use of water did not cause buckling. Drying quickly, the sheet was ready for Cameron to go back in with loose, gestural strokes of pastel.

PSNF served a complimentary lunch during the break to all who attended.

More from Cameron on her work process…

“I piece my paintings together like they're puzzles. It's one of the few techniques I do consistently, as I always try something new with every image I create. I think the biggest failure, as an artist, is to fall into a repetitious redundant rut.

For me, the realization of light is the most important thing. It is paramount. I keep adjusting until the light is just right. And I always remember, artists don't make mistakes, we make adjustments.” Thank You Cameron!

My Heart is in Utrecht (36 x 36 cm on Canson Mi-Teintes)

PSNF Meeting, August 29, 2015

Alan Flattmann was generous to allow us to use his list of Critique Questions at our August meeting where we analyzed multiple paintings to further understand not only how Judges and Jurors make their decisions but also how we can evaluate our own work during the painting process. Thank you, Alan!

And a big thank you to Schmincke and French Canvas who generously donated our three door prizes: a set of 12 Schmincke Soft Pastel and (2) 6x9 panels of the new pastel board, True Grit, by French Canvas.

HOLBEIN SET OF 144 STICKS By Carrie Raeburn I was lucky enough to win a 144 stick of Holbein Pastels at PSA this year. Although I have not yet tried them out, I am impressed with their color range and the numbering of each slot in the box. A color chart was also included.

Dakota’s web site says this about Holbein Soft Pastels:

“Holbein is a family owned Japanese Company based in Osaka, Japan. Since the turn of the last century it has become one of the world's largest manufacturers of high quality artist's materials, which has taken pride in maintaining the highest standards of quality control in the industry. To ensure uniformity of color, lightfastness and consistency, the manufacturing process has been entirely computerized, with

'permanence, brilliance, and technique in mind.' The medium soft consistency and square shape work great for edge work, line work, and detail.” http://www.dakotapastels.com/pages/softpastels-holbein.aspx

THANK YOU, LINDA, BETTY AND THE PSNF BOARD OF DIRECTORS! By Carrie Raeburn

When Jimmy Wright, President of PSA, asked me to come on the Board of Governors in May of 2014, I said “yes” enthusiastically. Then I found out that the PSA Bylaws required that I resign as both PSNF President and as a member of its board…and resign very quickly. My reaction was then less enthusiastic. Even though I loved PSNF very much, I wanted to give this new experience a try.

Linda Whittaker, my 1st Vice President, had all of the experience and skill required to do the job and do it well. In reality though, she really didn’t want the job and it was only because of her dedication and love for PSNF, that she agreed. I am so grateful to her and to all the board members who pulled together to get an amazing amount of work done.

Linda was an outstanding President for more than a year and helped us get through our National Juried Exhibition, Frank Federico Workshop, Demo and all of the related events. When Linda needed to pass the office on to someone else, Betty Riggs graciously accepted the office and saw us through our Members’ Show, the Cameron Hampton Demo and associated events. Both Betty and Linda did an outstanding job and with such dedication and gracefulness.

Now that I am finishing up my tenure as a PSA Board Member, I have been asked to return to the office of PSNF President on January 1st and I am thrilled to be coming back.

I owe Linda, Betty and the entire board of directors of PSNF, such a debt of gratitude for allowing me this experience in NYC and for taking such good care of the society in my absence. Thank you!
