The 33° Degree This ultimate degree of the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite of Freemasonry is awarded only by the Supreme Council

at the Annual Meeting of that body and cannot be applied for. It is given to those 32° members who have performed “outstanding services for the Fraternity,” or “for service to humanity that brings great credit upon the Order.”

Congratulations to the Valley of Chicago Members who have been nominated to receive the Thirty-third Degree in August 2017 at Rochester, New York.

J. Kenneth LudwigMichael E. Ehle

Scottish Rite Sovereign Grand Commander John William McNaughton has the pleasure to announce to the membership today that Active Member, David A. Glattly, 33°, will succeed him as leader of the Northern Masonic Jurisdiction upon his retirement in August 2017.

“To our valued members and Brothers,” said Commander McNaughton, “I could not be more pleased to inform you that the Supreme Council’s nominating committee has named David Glattly as your next Sovereign Grand Commander. Brother Glattly has been an active and honored Freemason for more than 40 years, and a member of the Scottish Rite for nearly three decades. Our fraternity will be led by a good man who serves from his heart. He will shoul-der great responsibility with intelligence, experience, dedication, and grace.”

The appointment of Brother Glattly marks the first time a new Scottish Rite leader has been announced a year prior to taking office. “These are challenging times for Freemasonry,” said Commander McNaughton. “Your Scottish Rite leadership and I feel it is important to have a thorough and seamless transition for our Fraternity.” Com-mander McNaughton and Brother Glattly will consult together over the next 12 months to continue the work “we began a decade ago—shifting the priorities of the Northern Masonic Jurisdiction back to caring for our members, and bringing compassion to the forefront of our Fraternity,” he said.

Said Brother Glattly, “I am extremely proud and humbled to be nominated as the Northern Masonic Jurisdiction’s new Sovereign Grand Commander. It is truly the honor of my lifetime. From my time as a young man in DeMolay, the ideals and ageless standards of our

Craft have been central to my life. I can vow to all members that I will work to my highest abilities to serve you, and cham-pion the future of this vibrant, historic, and vital organization.”

Brother Glattly began his Masonic career by joining Clif-ton Chapter, Order of DeMolay in 1970, eventually serving as State Master Councilor of New Jersey. He was raised a Master Mason in Clifton Lodge #203, Clifton, New Jersey in 1975. He served as Worshipful Master in 1995, and as the Grand Marshal of the Grand Lodge of New Jersey in 1998. He became an Active Member of the DeMolay Supreme Council in 1994 and served as Executive Officer in New Jersey from 1999-2004. In New Jersey Freemasonry, he was awarded the prestigious Daniel Coxe Medal for distinguished service to the Craft.

Glattly completed the degrees of the Scottish Rite in 1987. He was created a Sovereign Grand Inspector General, 33°, Honorary Member of the Supreme Council in 2000 at Pittsburgh Pennsylvania. He was crowned an Active Member at Boston, Massachusetts in 2002. He is also a member of Salaam Temple, AAONMS; Hugh DePaynes Com-mandery #1, St. Joseph Conclave, Red Cross of Constantine, among numerous other Masonic organizations.

He and his wife Monica live in Hawthorne, New Jersey. They have two children, son Matthew and daughter Jessica.

Some years ago the Scottish Rite Masonic Museum & Library in Lexington, Massachusetts, purchased a white quilt, hand-embroidered in red. Each of the 72 blocks on this quilt features a symbol related to Craft, Scottish Rite and York Rite Freemasonry. White quilts decorated with red embroidery were part of a fashion for household textiles decorated with simple red stitching, sometimes called “redwork,” that enjoyed popularity from the late 1800s through the 1920s. Many needleworkers participating in the trend used commercially-produced patterns, stencils and transfers for their redwork projects. This quilt is different; the designs of the Masonic symbols were original, not taken from a purchased pattern. The quilt also bears an unusual inscription, “Drawn and designed by F. R. Bunker, worked by C. A. Milliken 1908.” This combination of out-of-the-ordinary elements suggested this quilt had an interesting history to uncover.

The quilt descended in the sellers’ family and had, at one time, belonged to Carlton H. Smallidge (1898-1932) of Winter Harbor, Maine, near Bar Harbor. Carlton was only ten when this quilt was made and many years away from being a Freemason. His father, however, belonged to Winter Harbor Lodge No. 192. Records at the Grand Lodge of Maine show that Hilliard G. Smallidge (1867-1926) was initiated into the lodge in 1897 and that he held a number of offices there, including Worshipful Master in 1903. It is possible that this quilt may have been a delayed gift created to mark Hilliard’s term as master or to celebrate another occasion in his Masonic career. But who made this quilt for Hilliard? Intriguingly, the inscription on this quilt shows that it was a joint project. Perusal of census, marriage and other records helped identify the collaborators. Celestia Alberta Milliken was Hilliard’s sister. A laundress who also lived in Winter Harbor, Celestia “worked” the quilt, meaning she embroidered

A Collaborative Masonic Quilt

the quilt’s blocks and pieced them together. Freeland Rosebrook Bunker (1845-1909), a mariner and merchant, helped found the Masonic lodge at Winter Harbor and served as its first master. He was also likely related to Celestia and Hilliard. Freeland’s membership record at the Grand Lodge of Maine noted that he was involved in the York and Scottish Rites and the range of symbols depicted on the quilt point to Freeland’s familiarity with those orders. Freeland also left a diary, now part of the collection of the Winter Harbor Historical Society. In late 1907 he noted a few instances of spending time drawing emblems for the quilt, like this entry in December when he “Staid about home. Worked some on designs for a Masonic Quilt.” A few months later Celestia had transformed Freeland’s designs into the images on the quilt. Her and Freeland’s labor on the project was likely motivated by affection and family ties. These same bonds helped ensure the quilt’s preservation. Though it was displayed on special occasions, the quilt was never used. It passed from Hilliard to Carlton and onto the following generation before coming to the Museum where it will be preserved and interpreted for years to come.

General Douglas MacArthur:Military Man and Master Mason

Douglas MacArthur is, rightly so, a national hero, and his achieve-ments are recognized by every American. In fact, many of us have served under “The General” at some point in our lives.

The Craft can also take pride in MacArthur’s Masonic accomplish-ments. Together, these images create the picture of a man with out-standing intellect, great leadership ability, and a controversial per-sonality that made many either revere or revile him.

MacArthur’s father, Arthur MacArthur, was a Civil War Medal of Honor recipient. At nineteen Arthur became the youngest colonel in the Union Army. He progresses in the Army until eventually he was named Military Governor of the Philippines. Arthur MacArthur was indeed one of the finest military leaders of his era.

Douglas MacArthur followed in his father’s miitary footsteps. He graduated from West Point in 1903, first in his class three out of four years. In his senior year he became first captain of the Corps of Cadets, and he graduated with a cumulative grade point average of 98.14. Clearly, he was on his way to a distinguished military career.

Douglas was sent to Manila with the 3rd Engineers and spent some time as an aide to his father. He was a colonel when World War I began, and he became a Brigadier General in 1918. As a front line officer, he was wounded three times, decorated thirteen times, and cited for bravery in action seven times.

After World War I, MacArthur became Superintendent of the U.S. Military Academy in 1919. He was responsible for raising the academ-ic standards and improving the school’s curriculum. Then, after three years in the Philippines, he came back to the U.S. as a Major General, soon became a four-star General and was named Army Chief of Staff, the youngest in military history.

In July 1941, MacArthur became Commander of the U.S. Army Forces in the Far East. His troops defended the Bataan Peninsula for four months. In March 1942, President Roosevelt ordered MacArthur to Australia, but before leaving the General made his famous “ I shall return” promise.

As Supreme Commander for the Allied Powers, MacArthur accepted the Japanese surrender aboard the USS Missouri on Sep-tember 2, 1945.

With the invasion of Korea in 1950, MacArthur also became the United Nations Commander in Korea. His famous invasion at Inchon became a military masterpiece. However, by now his feud with Presi-dent Truman had progressed too far, and he was relieved of his com-mand in April 1951.

Certainly MacArthur’s military career was one of the most notable in US history. He did however, devote time to being an active Mason.

Field Marshall Douglas MacArthur was made a “Mason at Sight” in January 1936, by Samuel R. Hawthorne, the Grand Master of Masons in the Philippines. The ceremony lasted several hours and each degree was conferred by a Past Grand Master.

General MacArthur received that special ceremony because of his role as the Commander in charge of the training of the Philip-pines Armed Forces and because his father, who was also a Master Mason, had been the Military Governor of the island.

In March 1936 Brother Douglas MacArthur received the Fourth through the Thirty-second Degrees. He was coroneted a 33˚ in December of 1947.

Douglas MacArthur was an active Mason and had a significant contribution to Masonry when Supreme Commander MacArthur requested permission from the Japanese Government to allow Japa-nese nationals to join Masonic Lodges.

The Grand Lodge of Japan was formed in 1957. Today, it supports over 21 lodges and 4,000 members.

The team had many obstacles that they overcame on this historical mission, from the controversial “stand down” order to enduring more than 13 hours without backup troops. Kris and his team heroically fought off terrorists, eventually saving over 20 lives.

Kris is here to tell the real story. The one that isn’t on the news or in the newspapers. This story is also depicted in the book and major motion picture, 13 Hours.

Question: Jim what exactly is the Scottish Rite Almoner’s Fund for those that might not be aware.

Jim: It’s a special fund to financially assist needy Scottish Rite Masons and their immediate families during difficult times.

Question: Are there any strings attached to accepting money.

Jim: No strings. It is not a loan. It is a gift to a brother who needs it. We are not talking about non-payment of dues. We are talking about a brother who is getting behind on his mort-gage or can’t feed his family, or medical bills are piling up. That is when the Almoner’s Fund is here to help.”

Question: Can you give me an example.

Jim: Awhile back, we had a Brother who needed additional help in paying for medical expenses that his insurance would not pay. He and his wife were retired and living on a limited income that could not cover the outstanding medical bills. We gave him a check that partially covered the outstanding bills and referred him to the Grand Lodge Assistance Program for needy Brothers and their immediate families. The Grand Lodge Program paid the remaining medical bills. This was an example of the bodies of Masonry working together to take care of a Brother in need.

Question: I noticed you never mentioned the brother’s name.

Jim: That is correct. The Fund’s assistance is totally anonymous. Only myself and the Assistant Almoner, Brad Baker, know the names of the people who receive money. And that is the way it’s supposed to be. We don’t want a brother to be embarrassed to ask for assistance. We want to make it as easy as possible.

Question: Why is this so important? Why does the Scottish Rite devote resources to it?

Jim: Because it fulfills the vision statement of the Scottish Rite. “We will strive to be a fraternity that fulfills our Masonic obliga-tion to care for our members.” People lose their jobs, or a major health problem afflicts them, or something totally unexpected and out of their control up-ends their life. That is when we are most effective and able to do the most good. This is not a long term assistance program. It is a boots on the ground immediate action to give some relief so they can get back on their feet.

Question: How can members get involved and help support this worthy cause?

Jim: This is the only time of the year the Almoner’s Fund asks for donations. We have many requests for assistance and it’s important to replenish the fund in order to make sure we have enough for those who need it. If any brother is able to donate, no amount is too small and it is greatly appreciated. Just fill out the form below.

Question: You said this year that you have a special incentive.

Jim: That’s correct. For every $25 level we will include a free box of 20 Scottish Rite Holiday Cards. $25 gets you one box, $50 gets you two, $75 gets you three, and $100 gets you four. If you make a donation larger than $100 you just tell me how many boxes of cards you want and we will make it happen.
