Program in a Box | Chemistry Rocks! Exploring the Chemistry of Rocks and Minerals;
Tuesday, Oct 24, 2017 1:00 PM - 2:00 PM HST “Explore how rocks are used in our world! You do not need to be an ACS member or organization to
participate. Go to this link to register: www.acs.org/PIB. Learn how chemists are creating new
materials to meet the evolving demands of our modern society by tapping into fundamental rocks and
minerals!” (from the ACS Program in a Box website). ACS will send you a box that contains
everything need for ice breakers and games before and after the webinar.
30th Anniversary of National Chemistry Week (NCW): request for poem and illustration submissions from Katelynn Perrault, the coordinator for NCW:
“It is a great time to think about you and your students’ participating in the National Chemistry Week,
October 22-28th, 2017.
We will be holding an illustrated poem contest again this year for K-12 students. The theme this year is
“Chemistry Rocks!” (the emphasis will be on geology/geochemistry) to celebrate National Chemistry
Week’s 30th anniversary. Please contact Katelynn at [email protected] for the
applications. The deadline for submissions is September 22, 2017. Local section winners will receive a
prize, advance to the national ACS illustrated poem contest, and have their winning poster showcased
in display cases at Kahala Mall during NCW. Feel free to e-mail or call Katelynn if you have any
questions about the illustrated poem contest or NCW. Please forward this e-mail to any contacts you
think may be interested.
Your group or organization is invited to join the fun celebrating NCW this year on Saturday October
28 by providing a hands on exhibit. The annual National Chemistry Week interactive event will be on
October 28th, 2017 from 9am to 3pm at Kahala Mall. We will have individual tables for each exhibitor.
Participants will need to come early enough to have everything set up by 10:00 am. We'll wrap things
up at 2:30 pm. Hands-on activities and demonstrations do not necessarily have to fit the theme.
Please contact Katelynn Perrault at [email protected] if you would like to participate
at the Kahala NCW event by providing demonstrations for the kids.

What is happening around the Islands?
Kudos
Kudos to Barbara Rogers who was recognized at the National Meeting for her seven years of dedicated coordination of National Chemistry Week in Hawaii! Many students developed an interest in
chemistry through the illustrated poem contest and the public outreach which brought academia and organizations to the Chemistry at Kahala Mall. Mahalo Blake Vance for the photo.
The Chemistry of Wine Event The Chemistry of Wine Event at University of Hawaii at Manoa was a success! Forty two people
attended the occasion with Maui and Kauai attending by Blackboard Collaborate-mahalo to those who attended. Mahalo nui loa to the speakers, Mr. Michael Nassir (amateur sommelier) from the University of Hawaii at Manoa and Dr. David Horgen (chemist) from Hawaii Pacific University. They worked
hard and presented an outstanding seminar about different aspects of wine. We learned about the composition and background of wine and enjoyed sampling the eight wines. Mr. Nassir chose and
purchased a wide and varied selection of wine, and was able to borrow wine glasses from Fujioka’s Wine. Dr. Horgen characterized all wines using HPLC analysis-awesome job!
Mahalo also to the many people who contributed to the memorable experience: Drs. Joseph Jarrett and Thomas Apple for securing the Bilger venue and obtaining the proper approvals for the event and Mr.
Brian Chee who managed the audio-visual aspects and broadcasting to the neighbor islands; Jinxia Fu,
Matthew Abplanalp, and the Ungraduated Cylinders Chemistry Club from Kapi’olani Community
College (Travis Sherman, Alyson Shoji and Portia Yee). Mahalo Jinxia Fu for the photos shown below.
If you have more photos of the event please send them to Kathleen Ogata, [email protected].
Please see the next page for another shot of the event.
The AACT awardees The local teachers who were awarded the American Association of Chemistry Teachers (AACT)
scholarships were assisted by Ms. Stacy Snow to register for membership so they could start the fall with the resources. Congratulations and have fun with the materials.
Councilor's Report from Blake Vance
The unaudited number of registrants was 12,944 at the D.C. meeting. The Membership Affairs
Committee (MAC) continues its mission to recruit and retain members. A number of different tests are
underway mainly to find the right mix to convince first-year members to renew their membership. It is
at this stage that we lose the highest percentage of people. There are a variety of ways that membership
might benefit a member and making our diverse membership aware of these benefits is an area MAC
wants to focus on.
Council approved an increase in member dues from $166 to $171 for 2018. The advance member
registration fee for national meetings held in 2018 will also increase from $445 to $475 based on the
change in the Consumer Price Index. Budget and Finance projected a net favorable in operations for
2017, overwhelmingly from information services (i.e., publications).
You will be able to cast your ballot in the National election beginning on 29 Sept. 2017 for the 2018
candidates for President-Elect, Director-at-Large, and District VI Director who the Council selected at
the Spring meeting.
Recall, this Section voted to join the Western Region (WR). At the WR's Board meeting, the Nevada
Section declared it would host the 2021 WR meeting, possibly in Henderson, NV. Given the extended
interval until 2021, another section could conceivably host a leaner regional meeting in the interim.
Last year's President had initiated a program to increase the efficiency of the Society. I believe all
Society committees were charged with examining their respective programs; I know the Constitution
and Bylaws (C&B) Committee was. Mainly through the efforts of the C&B Chair and Staff Liaison, the
operations of C&B were revised, which has resulted in an expedited review process of the bylaws of
local sections, divisions, and international chapters. However, with only a 1-year term as president, I
sense a premature loss in momentum of this initiative.
Call for Volunteers
