Rob Roy Weekly Outdoor Golf Outing During the warmer months, the highlight of the week is to play a round of nine holes with the young men from the St. Dominic Savio Home. The game provides socialization and important exposure to all the skills inherent in the game of golf. Special thanks goes out to John Valley from La Preferida foods who led a group every week to play as well as to caddie. Among the phenomenal players who came out to play weekly were Robert Kunczuga along with his father Walter. Another group who shared the summer evenings were the Daniel Murphy Scholarship Fund caddies. Counselors from the fund and boys played together in four-person scramble teams. Many nights playing until dark, a good time was had by all.

We have the IPGA Foundation to thank for being the cornerstone of our 24-year existence. In 1994, the foundation leadership was responsible for establishing the Maryville Golf Academy. Executive Director Carrie Williams, IPGA Foundation President Don Pieper, and the Foundation Board continue to show their support for our work. At the Gleason Cup, our premier annual fundraiser, Carrie Williams presented Maryville Executive Director Sister Cathy Ryan with a matching grant for $25,000.

During the season, the PGA golf professionals are busy running their own facilities. Yet they still support our donors with the opportunity to enjoy their clubs. Here is the list of golf professionals who offered up their courses this year at the Gleason Cup. If by chance you happen to play any of these courses, as a member or as a guest, please stop in the shop as an ambassador for Maryville Golf Academy, and thank them for the club’s support.

Another crucial level of support comes from the PGA professionals who help us throughout the year. The time they carve out of their busy schedules to reach out on our behalf is a big contribution. They come to us wearing different hats: teacher, club maker, caddie trainer, and most importantly, friend. We would like to recognize the following professionals for their contributions to the Maryville golf programming.

Special Olympics Chicago Outreach Since 2004, we have partnered with the CDGA Sunshine through Golf Foundation, to assist Marquette Park Special Olympic athletes learn to golf. This past year Adam Tirres, Special Olympics program and event facilitator, created a player development plan to help more than 200 Special Olympics golfers to improve their games. This program is a partnership between Special Olympics Chicago, the Chicago District Golf Association - Sunshine through Golf Foundation, and Maryville Golf Academy.

EQUIPMENT NEEDS Thanks to Illinois Junior Golf Association, executive director, Jordan Abdel-Haq and President Blue Kinander, who promoted a Maryville club repair warehouse clean-up event and rounded up volunteer IJGA members to help in the club repair project. This volunteerism drew in leaders from the Glenbrook South girls and New Trier golf team, and members of their Engineering Clubs, who helped the St. Dominic Savio youths to build eight of the 23 teacher sets needed to fit players in Chicago parks.

GOLF SKILLS TRAINING The Chicago park district special recreation

directors also are the Special Olympics instructors who needed PGA professional training. Thanks to IPGA’s George Wrede and Mike Harrigan who helped teach the teacher’s workshop at Columbus Park. We hope to host a conference this winter at Maryville to continue to explore, improve and implement player development practices and cutting edge training for this special population.

We are pleased to announce that the Maryville Golf Academy has been invited to participate in the 50th Anniversary Special Olympics World Celebration at Soldier Field on July 21, 2018.

Eisenberg Casa Imani Baby Yoga ClassesIn the winter months, we teach our pregnant and parenting young women fitness with baby yoga. A key component of the program is the work done in the kitchen. Smoothie nutrition. Mango was a hit! We also learned about how to support a healthy lifestyle, including drinking more water.

The Bartlett Hills Golf Club is located across the street from the Eisenberg campus, and offered us access to practice and playing opportunities. The club staff gave the young women a tour of all of the departments and operations of the golf course, food and beverage, maintenance, and the professional shop.

Weekly practices let the teens (with their babies!) access the range, putting green and golf course. The toddlers and their mothers learned the ins and outs of the game and its etiquette, like the rules for walking on the green.

Salvation Army Ray and Joan Kroc Center Caddie Pilot Takes Root at Harborside InternationalFor the last four winters, EQ Sylvester, president of the Freedom Golf Association, has sponsored a get-caddie-ready training program for about 15 children a year. These children went on to caddy in the spring at Olympia Fields, Flossmoor, Beverly, Oak Park, an Park Ridge country clubs.

Our caddie training curriculum has evolved since 1994. In the beginning, we trained Maryville residential youths to caddie at Evanston Golf Club, Sunset Ridge Country Club, Park Ridge Country Club, Green Acres Country Club and The Glen. In 2004, we began to train other deserving youths, namely the Daniel Murphy Scholarship Fund caddies. This experience allowed us to prepare the caddie candidates for their official training at the clubs.

This past year, the idea of having caddies at Harborside International is now a reality thanks mainly to Mike Keiser and Josh Lesnik. Now, the caddies we trained at the Kroc Center and youths from the Southeast Side of Chicago, have a new place to work and more importantly a chance to develop in quest of a Chick Evans Scholarship! A special thanks to Terry O’Neill, Lane Stevens and Brian Dutler for their operational support in managing the new group.

“ Without generosity like yours, our children would not have so many things other children and families take for granted. Thank you for your dedication. Let us help one another continue in this spirit.” —Sr. Catherine M. Ryan, O.S.F.

Indoor Training During the off-season, our training is primarily in the John Gleason golf center. Emphasis is on physical training using different disciplines like yoga, boxing, calisthenics and weightlifting. With our state-of-the-art putting and pitching greens and our Full Swing golf simulator, we are able to work on improving skills and playing golf without the pressure of a foursome waiting behind us.

Our weekly golf off-campus outing has dinner and practice at the KemperSports dome (formerly Mike Munro’s golf dome), where we have access to weekly practice, until warmer weather lets us back out onto the course.

Christ the King Jesuit College Preparatory High School Our Golf In School outreach program is going strong at Christ the King thanks to Clem Martin, president, Ryan Elisco, physical education teacher, Jimmy Bajner, math and social studies teacher/ athletic director, and former board member Mike Heaton. Some of the students attend the WGA Association caddie academy as well working as caddies at Oak Park Country Club. We have combined this program with the one at Providence St. Mel’s.

Young golfers at Providence St. Mel’s Thanks to Paul J. Adams, executive chairman and president, Jeanette Butala, president and principal, Tim Erwin, assistant principal, Teresa Cullen, athletic director/counseling, Don VonBeek, chemistry and economics teacher, and Owen Pelzer, humanities teacher, who helped execute a new Golf in School player development plan. The plan has three components: after school golf practice, Columbus Park Golf Course PGA-led practice and golf in PE classes. This program has increased the golf team from 3 to 20 players in one year. Get Caddy Ready training will be offered next February.
