• Functional area leaders within Student Affairs and Enrollment Management have identified a need for resources and professional development in the area of learning outcomes based assessment of co-curricular experiences.

• Senior Student Affairs Officers have articulated a need and desire to further co-curricular assessment efforts at colleges and universities.

• Higher Learning Commission accreditation activities have increasingly sought more evidence of institutional commitment to the ongoing assessment of student learning.

Opportunities ~ Unravelling Complexities• “Institutions of postsecondary education are complex spaces, with students

learning in all corners of them, building upon prior learning they bring with them. The complexity of our educational environments poses a challenge to understanding where students learn and how learning is reinforced and integrated across curricular, co-curricular, and work-based experiences. In its most recent survey of the field, the National Institute for Learning Outcomes Assessment (NILOA) has seen an increased awareness of the range of places that learning happens within institutions as well as the need to document and align learning throughout.”

• Support from Minnesota State System Office

• $10K Innovation Funding Grant & $50K Multi-Campus Collaboration Grant for FY20 to expand toolkits and professional development opportunities. Develop avenues to adapt and expand co-curricular assessment as an emerging best practice.

• Seeking to continue to scale this work through additional funding (up to $160K) for FY21.

• The vision for future efforts include:• Expansion of a community of practice bringing together individuals to share

and/or produce resources to advance co-curricular learning outcomes based assessment system wide.

• Creation of a series of online professional development experiences that can be attended live or viewed online at any time. These experiences may include webinars, workshops, and other online resources that can advance institution level co-curricular assessment work.

• Implementation of various in-person avenues to expand awareness and visibility of co-curricular assessment innovations and progress across the system. These opportunities may include ASA conferences, summits, and functional area meetings.
