Cardiovascular Section FALL 2019 Message from the CV Section Chair Michael S. Sturek, PhD Indiana University [email protected] Dear Cardiovascular Section Members, I am fortunate to have the opportunity to serve you as Chair of the CV Section. First, let me thank Bill Jackson of Michigan State University for his service over the past 3 years. Bill continues in the transition to provide me with valuable guidance on procedures and deadlines as I get up to speed on everything. A theme that I want to emphasize is participation. The CV Section has always been prominent in the APS and there is a continuing need for our CV Section members to be active in volunteering for committees and voting for council and other leadership positions. There certainly is work involved, but it is fulfilling and shapes the future of the APS and physiological science overall.

Cardiovascular Section

FALL 2019

Message from the CV Section Chair Michael S. Sturek, PhD

Indiana University [email protected]

Dear Cardiovascular Section Members, I am fortunate to have the opportunity to serve you as Chair of the CV Section.

This theme of member participation especially relates to changes in the APS. At a summer meeting of APS leadership, we decided that the APS will leave the Experimental Biology spring meeting and the APS will build its own world-class meeting starting in 2022. In the meantime, APS will participate in the EB meetings in San Diego in 2020 and Indianapolis in 2021. In considering the departure from the EB meeting, the challenges and opportunities were actively discussed and the decision was unanimous to establish the annual spring meeting of APS. APS activities at the EB 2020 are going to be excellent, so please attend and participate (there’s that theme of participation again). Abstract deadline: 11/14/2019 Robert M. Berne Distinguished Lectureship: Ju Chen, Ph.D., University of California, San Diego. Carl J. Wiggers Award: John Canty, M.D., University of Buffalo Gabor Kaley Memorial Lectureship Award: Dirk Duncker, M.D., University Medical Center, Rotterdam See the Awards Committee report for more details and additional awards. More information will be provided on the CV Section banquet via APS Connect. Donations: I encourage every member of the CV Section to donate to the CV Section’s Endowment fund. The APS matches every dollar donated up to $25,000, effectively doubling your contribution. The CV Section Endowment will be used to support Trainee Awards and other projects. Every dollar counts, so even small donations are welcome. We greatly appreciate your generosity. The APS is a non-profit organization, so your donation is tax deductible on your US federal taxes. The APS will acknowledge your donation and mail you a receipt. Here is a link where you can donate online. Click here (https://give.the-aps.org/give/193705/#!/donation/checkout), then select “Cardiovascular Section Endowment Fund” in drop-down menu “Areas with the most need”. I look forward to your participation and seeing you in San Diego in 2020!

University of Missouri [email protected]

Hello Everyone! I hope you had a terrific summer and are anxious to see each other in San Diego next year. Please keep up your efforts on recruiting new members and get involved in any or all of our activities. Do not forget the following awards and programs from the Career Opportunities in Physiology Committee. The APS Local Undergraduate Research Awards in Physiology (LURAP). LURAP allows APS Members to recognize excellence in undergraduate physiology research at their home institutions. The award fosters interest in physiological research for undergraduates, encourages them to continue with physiological studies, and provides networking with APS members at their home institutions. The award package includes a certificate, an APS t-shirt, and a free one-year undergraduate membership to APS. Visit www.the-aps.org/lurap for more information.

Check out awards from the APS. There are several awards for researchers, educators, and trainees! Visit https://www.the-aps.org/professional-development/awards to see the list and deadlines!

Professional Skills Training (PST). The APS PST program promotes the development of key professional skills among graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and new and established investigators by offering effective live and online interactive courses. Visit http://www.the-aps.org/pst for more information. The next live course offered is Writing and Reviewing for Scientific Journals, which takes place January 23-26, 2020 in Orlando, FL. Attendees will have the opportunity to work in person with journal editors and highly-published authors to improve your first-author draft manuscript. Learn about the submission process and receive feedback on your draft manuscript. Spaces are limited; applications are due on or before December 1, 2019.

Message from the Physiologist in Industry Committee

The mission of the Physiologists in Industry Committee (PIC) is to integrate the diversity of industry members into the APS. PIC works with other committees and Sections to provide a resources and workshops in industry-related topics as well as networking opportunities for Society members. The PIC is also charged with promoting the innovation, rigor and process involved in industry science. With recent changes to the APS committees we are excited for our important and growing presence within the Society. For 2020, PIC will be working closely with other APS committees to provide opportunities to assist trainees in seeking out “industry” positions AND increase the retention of industry Physiologists within APS. Please follow our progress as we develop these and related opportunities at Physiologists in Industry Committee. APPLY for a 2020 PIC Translational Research Award This award recognizes a trainee (graduate student or postdoc) whose performed research is translatable to industry applications and has been designated by PIC as an outstanding example of experimental research. The deadline for the 2020 Physiologists in Industry Committee’s “Translational Research Award” is Nov. 14, 2019. Applicants will be evaluated on their first-author EB meeting abstract, supplementary description of their project and career goals. The 2019 PIC Translational Research Award The winner of the 2019 postdoctoral award was Malgorzata Kasztan, the University of Alabama at Birmingham, for the project entitled “Glomerular Hyperfiltration Predicts the Onset of Chronic Kidney Disease in Humanized Sickle Cell Mice”. The winner of the predoctoral award was Nicholas VanDongen, the University of Colorado at Boulder, for the project entitled “Transfer of Young Gut Microbiota Ameliorates Age- and Western-Style Diet-Related Vascular Endothelial Dysfunction in Mice.” Physiologists in Industry Committee Mixer The annual Physiologists in Industry Committee Mixer at the Experimental Biology meeting is a great opportunity to network with industry and academic members. Every year trainees as well as seasoned scientists from several backgrounds engage them in discussion about careers, research, and opportunities in industry positions. We look forward to hosting the event with free hors d’oeuvres and drinks (cash bar) at the PIC Mixer at EB 2020 in San Diego. EB 2020 PIC Symposium The 2020 PIC sponsored symposium “Novel Mechanisms and Therapeutic Targets for Vascular Aging” chaired by Dr. Douglas Seals and Dr Kerrie Moreau. It will be held Mon April 6th 3:30-5:00 in room 28DE of the convention center. We look forward to seeing you at these events at EB 2020 in San Diego. Sincerely, Matthew R. Zahner Ph.D. (Chair, Physiologists in Industry Committee)
