As Americans United for Life turns 45 this fall, I have been reflecting upon the honor it has been to serve this organization for more than three decades. As part of our elite pro-life legal team, I have witnessed firsthand how vital AUL has been in saving unborn lives and protecting mothers. Our commitment to changing law to protect human life is just as steadfast today as it was 45 years ago.

Planned Parenthood’s 100th anniversary in October reminds us that AUL must continue our work with the same dedication and focus we have displayed over the last 45 years. Amidst their expensive and carefully orchestrated taxpayer-supported celebrations, Planned Parenthood and its allies will try to escape the truth that after 100 years they are now the nation’s largest abortion provider. That is their centennial legacy.

I have never experienced a starker contrast between two events. One, a celebration of life and the defense of our most vulnerable. The other, a celebration of profiteering from the corporatization of death.

Stenciled into the wall above the entrance to our offices is a quote from Thomas Jefferson:

“The care of human life and happiness, and not their destruction, is the first and only legitimate object of good government.” The purposeful and permanent placement of this statement is to continuously remind all of us at AUL that we have a sacred obligation to carry out our work so that, someday, we will no longer need to fight a culture of death.

Americans United for Life (AUL) is the legal architect of the pro-life movement. We are accumulating victories, building momentum, and advancing a culture of life in America. Our vision is a nation in which all are welcomed in Life

and protected in law. The first national pro-life organization in America, AUL has been committed to comprehensive protection for human life from conception to natural death.

"The care of human life and happiness, and not their destruction,

is the first and only legitimate object of good government."

Established as the first national pro-life legal organization in the country, Americans United for Life was founded two years before Roe v. Wade was decided, anticipating growing legal threats to life and organizing to confront them. AUL has fought for life in every abortion-related case before the Supreme Court, from Roe v. Wade to this June’s Whole Woman’s Health v. Hellerstedt.

In August 1971, a diverse group of pro-life activists, spearheaded by Brent Bozell, gathered in Washington, D.C.,

to found AUL. The first Chairman of the Board was George Huntston Williams, then-Hollins Professor of Divinity at Harvard. The founders had the audacious aim of ensuring the legal protection of unborn life.

Since that day, AUL has worked for comprehensive legal protection of human life from conception to natural death. Its goal, as eloquently stated by former board member, the late Fr. Richard John Neuhaus, is an America where all are “welcomed in life and protected in law.”

45 Years Protecting Life

By Denise Burke VP of Legal Affairs

AUL has fought for life in every abortion-related case before the Supreme Court, from Roe v. Wade

to this June’s Whole Woman’s Health v. Hellerstedt.

Today, 45 years after its founding, AUL has become the nation’s premier pro-life legal organization. Here are just a few of the things we have accomplished together:

1. Defended taxpayers from being complicit in government funding of abortion by successfully defending the Hyde Amendment before the Supreme Court.

2. Pioneered the state-based model legislative strategy, which has exploded over the past decade.

3. Developed the “pro-life playbook,” Defending Life, a compendium of life-affirming model legislation and current analysis on each state’s progress in defending life.

4. Filed more than 100 (and counting) amicus curiae (or “friend of the court”) briefs in life-related cases, more than any other pro-life organization.

5. Released the explosive exposé, “The Case for Investigating Planned Parenthood,” which exposed gross abuses by the abortion giant and helped instigate the first-ever Congressional investigation into Planned Parenthood’s use of taxpayer funding.

6. Fought against the dangerous partial-birth abortion procedure, assisting state attorneys general in defending their bans and filing a brief in the landmark 2007 case Gonzales v. Carhart, in which the Supreme Court upheld the federal ban on this inhumane practice.

7. Been credited with many of the state pro-life laws enacted between 2011 and 2016. AUL remains the leading advocate for state legislation protecting human life.

8. Fought the anti-life elements of Obamacare. During the 2009-10 healthcare reform debate, AUL launched the website www.realhealthcarerespectslife.com, through which the AUL legal team provided in-depth, comprehensive analysis of pending healthcare reform proposals.

I hope you’ll view our full list of 45 reasons to celebrate AUL’s 45 years of working to ensure that everyone is welcomed in life and protected in law, as well as the companion video featuring your AUL legal team.

To all of our supporters: happy anniversary. Thank you for making 45 years of protecting and defending life possible.

Recently, I received notice that instructions had been left in the last will and testament of a longtime Americans United for Life supporter for a charitable gift to be made to AUL from that supporter’s estate. As all of us at AUL reflect on our 45th anniversary, I find myself continuously moved by moments like these and their inherent display of overwhelming generosity.

As an organization that relies exclusively upon the voluntary contributions of our supporters, our work is fundamentally impossible without you.

To the students and parents that stood with us at the March for Life in a freezing blizzard holding AUL signs, the tens of thousands of Twitter and Facebook followers that share our

message every day, those who display our bumper stickers and magnets, the church parishioners that host charitable bake sales in our honor, and those who show their support in the form of donations, prayers, and notes of encouragement, thank you.

All of us at AUL will never stop working to make you proud.

We need your continued support now more than ever to continue our commitment to comprehensive legal protection for human life from conception to natural death. Your AUL legal team shows you within these pages how Planned Parenthood has become a 100-year old abortion giant. Please consider a donation to AUL today so that we can continue to effectively push back against this giant.

1. Planned Parenthood is responsible for at least one-third of the abortions performed each year in the United States. Planned Parenthood’s own Senior Director of Medical Services, Deborah Nucatola, estimates that figure may actually be as high as 40 percent.

2. Every year, more than 300,000 babies are killed by Planned Parenthood.

3. Planned Parenthood performs and profits from approximately 900 abortions every day.

4. Between 1991 and 2011, the percentage of patients at Planned Parenthood for abortions nearly tripled.

5. After 10 years of Cecile Richards’ leadership,

Planned Parenthood has realized a 20 percent decline in overall patients seen but an 11 percent increase in abortions.

6. According to Planned Parenthood’s own annual report, for every single adoption referral its clinics made in the last year, Planned Parenthood performed 160 abortions.

7. Taxpayer funding accounts for 40 percent of Planned Parenthood’s annual revenue. In 2015 alone, the “nonprofit” reported $58.8 million in excess revenue.

Follow Americans United for Life (@AUL) on Twitter as we prepare to release more than 100 additional facts about the “real” Planned Parenthood during its centennial year.

Here are a few disturbing facts:

A Shameful Centennial

In the coming weeks, the American people are going to be inundated with a false narrative “celebrating” Planned Parenthood’s 100th anniversary. In spite of the fawning profiles of Cecile Richards, gross misstatements of the organization’s role in health care, and whitewashing of its rapidly increasing abortion business, there are more reasons to be ashamed that Planned Parenthood continues operating after 100 years.

The Case for Investigating Planned Parenthood

Although Planned Parenthood advertises itself as an organization promoting health for women and families, it is the nation’s largest abortion provider and has been plagued by scandal and abuse. In this report, Americans United for Life documents the known and alleged abuses by Planned Parenthood.

AUL’s Planned Parenthood Series

The Planned Parenthood Exhibits

The exhibits build on AUL’s ground-breaking analysis in “The Case for Investigating Planned Parenthood” to expose the truth about the nation’s largest abortion provider. The Planned Parenthood Exhibits highlight the grounds for investigating and, ultimately, defunding Planned Parenthood.

Abortion, Inc.

The New Leviathan

This report follows up on AUL’s detailed analysis of Planned Parenthood’s track record in “The Case for Investigating Planned Parenthood” and The Planned Parenthood Exhibits. It further details exactly what kind of “services” are sold by the abortion industry leader, which commits nearly one in three abortions nationwide.

This report—the third installment of its kind in Americans United for Life’s ongoing exposé of the nation’s largest abortion provider—spotlights the increase in Planned Parenthood mega-centers. “The New Leviathan” reveals what these centers mean for Planned Parenthood’s indisputable status as America’s largest abortion provider, as well as for the women targeted by the abortion chain.
