OSBA– The Resource for Ohio Beekeepers

We’re looking for beekeepers who want to make a difference in their community— Volunteer as a Regional Rep, HAS, EAS or ABF Delegate, or join one of our many committees that make a difference for beekeepers across Ohio. Stop by the OSBA table for more information or con-tact the OSBA Nominating Committee: [email protected] .

Bee part of a

growing,

dynamic organization!

Dear Fellow Beekeepers, Welcome to the OSBA 2019 Fall Conference. Whether you are a new or experienced beekeep-er, each of you attend the Fall Conference for different reasons: quality speakers, diverse topics, large vendor selection, ex-citing auction table, honey contest, OSU Beelab test-ing, or just for warm bee-keeper fellowship before we all settle in for a long winter. Throughout the year, OSBA offers diverse educational programs and support for our beekeeping community. As your state association, we continue to expand our successful programs, re-vamp older ones, and create new opportunities to support the bee-keeping community. The OSBA Traveling Speaker program, devel-oped and tested as part of our USDA Specialty Crop Block Grant, is now a self-standing OSBA program heading into a 4th year of providing presentations on sustainable beekeeping tech-niques to local associations. The cost of these presentations is largely sponsored by OSBA. The Apiary Diagnostic Kit, developed by OSBA and beta-tested by a contingent of Ohio bee-keepers, is now available nation-wide through Betterbee. The Manual, on its own, is for sale

through our website (with bulk discount prices available) and at the OSBA table at today’s con-ference. The OSBA Affiliate Program has grown in both benefits and members. No other state has a

similar program of local as-sociation support. Really, I could go on and on about all the current and fu-ture programming that your state association offers Ohio beekeepers. (Did I mention the OSBA 4-H Sponsorship Program?). These programs are OSBA’s investment in the future of

Ohio beekeeping. As OSBA supports Ohio beekeepers, you can help us continue to provide these programs and more, by showing your support of OSBA and be-coming a member, renewing your membership, or volunteering for one of our many committees. Come and grow with OSBA. Enjoy the 2019 OSBA Fall Conference,

Terry Lieberman-Smith President

The Ohio State Beekeepers Association, Inc.

Page 19 Meet the OSBA Fall Conference Speakers

Kirsten Traynor: In 2006-2007, Kirsten received a German Chan-cellor Fellowship & drove over 50,000 miles throughout Western Europe to study the differ-ences between European & American beekeep-ing. She reported her findings through 50+ pub-lished articles. Fascinated with the social com-plexity of a honey bee hive, she earned her PhD in biology from Arizona State University with Dr. Robert Page. While a grad student, she spent almost a year in Avignon, France in the lab of Dr. Yves Le Conte as a Fulbright Fellow. She investigates how pesticides impact honey bee health as a postdoc with Dr. Dennis van En-gelsdorp and edited American Bee Journal from November 2017 – December 2018. She is the author of Two Million Blossoms: Discovering the Medicinal Benefits of Honey and Simple, Smart Beekeeping. She manages a small apiary producing top quality nucs and Maryland reared queens. Erin MacGregor-Forbes: Erin focuses her beekeeping teaching on practi-cal and sustainable colony management, IPM strategies, and overwintering nucleus colonies. Erin’s passion is working with the bees own in-stincts and behaviors to create thriving colonies, and communicating those concepts to beekeep-ers who want to help their colonies maximize their potential. Erin has received three grants from the Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education (SARE) to compare honey bee colony strength and survivability between nucleus and package started colonies. Erin speaks nationally on a variety of beekeeping topics particularly fo-cused on northern sustainable beekeeping prac-tices. Erin MacGregor-Forbes is an EAS certified Mas-ter Beekeeper, and currently is Chairperson of the Eastern Apicultural Society (her four year term expires at his meeting) and the Chief Fi-nancial Officer at the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens. She and her beekeeping business partner have about 150 hives near Portland Maine. Jay Heselschwerdt: He has kept honey bees in multiple states from the North to the South. Jay lives in Tazewell,

TN and works as the Eastern Regional Apiary Inspector for the State of Tennessee. Jay also is Co-Founder of the HONEY Convention, President of Bee Friends Bee Club, and the 4H leader for Claiborne Youth Beekeepers. Jay is a Master Beekeeper that learned at the Univer-sity of Tennessee under Dr. Skinner. Shannon Trimboli: Shannon is a beekeeper, wildlife biologist, and author. She lives in south central Kentucky where she is active in her state and local bee-keeping communities. In 2016, she started Busy Bee Nursery and Consulting which specializes in plants and habitat consulting services for honey bees, native pollinators, and wildlife conserva-tion. In 2017, she was named the Beekeeper of the Year for the Kentucky State Beekeepers As-sociation. Her first book, Plants Honey Bees Use in the Ohio and Tennessee Valleys, was pub-lished in 2018. Shannon also writes a weekly blog about Kentucky pollinators and backyard wildlife, tips for attracting pollinators and wildlife, highlights of different plants for pollinators and wildlife, and life on the farm and nursery. Andrew Connor: Andrew is the author of BeeCabulary Essentials and is the son of an Entomologist specializing in Beekeeping. He started beekeeping 8 years ago. He went to college for Social Work and has enjoyed talking to his clients and co-workers about the importance of honey bees. He cur-rently has 5 of his own hives and helps with over 15 others. He is originally from Columbus, Ohio and currently lives in Michigan. Dr. Reed Johnson: Reed is an Assistant Professor in the Depart-ment of Entomology at The Ohio State Universi-ty – Ohio Agricultural Research and Develop-ment Center (OARDC) in Wooster, Ohio. Dr. Johnson received a B.A. from Wabash College, a M.S. from Wake Forest University and a Ph.D. in Entomology from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. His research focuses on determining how bees are exposed to pesticides and what effect exposure to pesticides has on the health of honey bees and other pollina-tors. He has published over 25 peer-reviewed

Session Descriptions

Session 1 Easy Queen Introduction: You open the hive and discover the colony is queenless. Either she was accidentally crushed or the colony swarmed and the virgin queen didn’t make it back. Or may-be your old queen is still there, but her brood pat-tern is terrible. Replacement queens are expen-sive and you don’t want the hive to reject her. Learn how to give her the best chance of suc-cess, so your hive is back up and running as fast as possible. Eating Your Medicine: Honey is so much more than a sweetener. Its many medicinal benefits have been employed throughout recorded history, and today we know more than ever about its sci-entifically backed healing properties. Learn about the healing history of bee products as medicine, how they can improve your health and what it takes to add them to your farm's offerings. SARE Grant: Erin will discuss her three year SARE grant projects comparing traditional pack-age started colonies, overwintered nucleus colo-nies, and requeened packages, A Comparison of Honey Bee Colony Strength and Survivability between Nucleus and Package Started Colo-nies. You will learn about the project idea, de-sign, execution and results, and explore ideas for continuing that work. Gentle Beekeeping: Getting tired of being in strung? Why are the bees so mean? Learn sim-ple techniques to decrease or eliminate the chance of being strung all together. Forgive me, but you are the reason the bees are mean. Don’t Fool Yourself: Somewhere along the line, you will need to decide if beekeeping is a hobby or business. Each requires a different set of ob-jectives and skills. Kelley will discuss how to evaluate this decision and create a roadmap for success, either as a hobby or business.

Session 2 2 Million Blossoms: Long before the advent of antibiotics, our ancestors used honey to treat a myriad health issues. While doctors have known that honey inhibits bacterial growth since the ear-ly 1930s, it was only in the 1970s that its antibac-terial nature was revealed to be due to an en-

zyme bees add during the nectar ripening pro-cess. Superbugs continue to evolve resistance to modern antibiotics, making normal wounds diffi-cult to heal. In search for effective alternatives, doctors are rediscovering the benefits of honey. Biodynamic Beekeeping: There are many terms tossed around in the realm of “natural” beekeeping and not all of them are practical. This talk will introduce the concepts in biodynam-ic beekeeping in small bites and examines where we as beekeepers can learn from this ages old practice. Creating Bee Presentations for a Non-Beekeeping Audience: How do you talk honey bee who never thought about honey bees. This talk will give you ideas of how to explain our love of the honey bees to kids and adults of all ages. Examine how to make this fun for kids and or keeping adults interested in learning about bees and how to help them. Using different tech-niques can bring even the least interesting as-pects into a joyful learning experience No Welfare Bees: You should not have to sup-port your honey bees with food stamps. Make them go to work for you and create a healthier honey bee in the process. Botany For Bees: When it comes to honey bees, not all flowers are created equal. Learn why honey bees use some flowers and not oth-ers, why how much a honey bee uses a plant can vary across the plant’s range, and other basic botany related to honey bees.

Session 3 Discovering new chemical controls for Var-roa, Nosema and European Foulbrood : OSBA funded research report. Nectar Flows: Nectar production can vary great-ly from one location to the next or even one year to the next within the same location. We’ll begin by discussing the many different factors that can influence nectar production. Then we’ll discuss the different types of nectar flows, when the nec-tar flows typically occur in this region, and how

(Continued on page 21)

21

you can tell whether a nectar flow is happening in your area. Small Scale Queen Rearing: Erin will describe her queen rearing operation and help to demys-tify the process of learning to rear queens on a home-apiary scale. Chemical Free Beekeeping: It is possible and you can do it. Timing and technique is the key to not using chemicals in the hive. Reading the Frames: This talk will identify the different frames in the hive, the bees on the frames and what they are doing. I will also dis-cuss what is happening on the frame, what type of frame it is and what issues may occur in the hive.

Session 4 Halting the Swarm: Good swarm management

is one of the hardest things to learn. Despite a beekeeper’s best efforts, some colonies just in-sist on getting ready to go. Learn how to stop unstoppable swarms and turn all that natural energy of the bees into beautiful, new comb. Research at OSU Beelab: Come and find out student bee research at the OSU Beelab. Nucs: Overwintered nucleus colonies are the foundation for Erin’s sustainable beekeeping operation. We will learn about the fundamentals of creating, managing, and overwintering nucle-us colonies in northern climates Apiary Diagnostic Kit - Inspecting with Re-sults Developed by OSBA, beta tested by Ohio bee-keepers, distributed through a USDA Specialty Crop Block Grant, learn how to use the kit con-tents to help monitor your hive for pests and dis-ease.

papers on bees and bee health. He teaches cours-es in pesticide science and beekeeping at OARDC. Dawn Combs: Dawn is an ethnobotanist, beekeeper, author, herbal educator and homestead herbalist. She is co-founder of Bees First and co-owner of Mockingbird Meadows, an herbal health farm in Central Ohio that is nationally recognized for her signature line of ther-apeutic herbal honey spreads. Bob Hooker: Bob Hooker began keeping honey bees in the 1970’s and now operates Clear Fork Apiaries in Harrison County, Ohio. Bob is past president of OSBA, the Lorain County Beekeepers Association, The Harrison County Beekeepers Association and the Heartland Beekeepers Association. Kelley King: Kelley is a financial planning generalist for W3 Wealth Management, LLC. He helps clients see the “big picture”, simplify solutions and create imple-mentation plans.
