"THE DESERT SONG" is a tale of love and adventure, unfolded amid all the romanceand splendor of the "Foreign Legion" and set in the mountains and deserts of FrenchMorocco in 1925. It concerns itself with the Riffs, members of a small powerful guer-illa band organized to right the wrongs committed by the foreign rulers in Morocco,Their leader is a mysterious red-cloaked. masked figure known as the Red Shadow, whois the terror of the French troops and the Robin Hood of the Riffs. In reality he isnone other than Pierre Birabeau, handsome young son of the French Governor of theprovince, playing the role of a weakling and coward for his father and Margot, the girlhe loves. The charming Margot. betrothed to Cap't, Paul Fontaine, is still longing for romanceand adventure, and finds it when she is kidnapped by the Red Shadow and carried tohis camp in the desert. And under the magic of the desert skies she fulls in love withthe rebel chieftain. Meanwhile, Azuri, a beautiful and embittered native girl once lovedby Cap't, Fontaine, and now angered by his faithlessness, discovers theidentity of theRed Shadow and betrays him. Refusing to fight his own father, he forfeits his leader-ship and according to Riff custom, is sent in to the desert to die. But true love is final-ly rewarded and our story ends happily.
For your safety and to help you enjoy the performance, smoking, liquid refreshments, recording and the taking of flash photographs are not permitted in the theatre.

THE WEST VALLEY L1GHT OPERA ASSOCIATION, IncThe West Valley Light Opera Association is an organization based primarilyon family group subscriptions; no subscriber receives fewer than two reserv-ed seat tickets to each of three productions for a total of six per season. OnMarch 1st, 1973, there were 380 family group subscribers representing atotal of 884 individuals entitled to attend each of the three productions.
Association subscribers all receive reserved seat tickets to each production;as the theatre seats but 300 and the Fire Marshal frown on standees, reser-vations are necessarily on a first received basis. Special subscriptions are pro-vided for bona-fide full time students of our families, and for fully retiredpersons over age 65, at a reduced fee,
Conceived early in 1964, the Association was incorporated as a non-profitorganization on August 12thof that year with Mr. Paul Santos as Presidentand a Board of Directors of three. Los Gatos was selected as the post officeaddress, probably because Mr. Santos resided there; the "West Valley" part ofthe title indicates a wider base of operations than one or more communitynames would imply, and, as the production of Light Opera type musicals, including operettas, was planned, the words "Light Opera" were incorpor-, ated in the title, with the word "Association" completing a namedescriptiveof the organization. Three productions per season were considered enoughto keep our subscribers aware of the Association but not liable to provetiresome or place an unnecessary burden on anyone.
The first play selected was "The Unsinkable Molly Brown" with Mr. Santos, the President, as play Director; playing in the West Valley Junior Collegeauditorium in Campbell, attendance was miniscule. Followed by "Stop TheWorld, I Want To Get Off' and "Oklahoma", the season wound up with theAssociation deeply in debt. Membership numbered but 21. It was felt theselection of the Campbell auditorium was a poor choice, the public apparent-ly thinking that a college g!OUPwas performing. The By-laws were revised toincrease the Board of Directors, a bank loan was negotiated, and the SaratogaCivic Theatre was obtained for future productions. Mr. Santos, having resign-ed as President and a Director, the vice-President, Captain Maurice, took over, and has been the President ever since; Mr. Sherwood Goozee became the playDirector and the next season was planned.
"Oliver" opened the 1966-67 season in the Saratoga Civic Theatre and play-ed to fairly well-filled houses; several press critics attended and some flatter-ing reviews resulted. West Valley Light Opera was on the way back. Success-ful productions of "Here's Love" and "Once Upon A Mattress" completedthe season; all were financial as well as artistic successes and permitted astart toward satisfying our creditors. Mr. Goozee was play Director for allthree productions, and the list of subscribers rose to 90 families. Succeed-ing seasons saw productions of "Bells Are Ringing", "Guys and Dolls" and"Gypsy", in 1967-68; then came "On A Clear Day", "South Pacific" and"H.M.S. Pinafore" in 1967-69, followed by "Brigadoon", "Kismet" and "TheStudent Prince"playing the 1969-70 season. The 1970-71 season saw"Any-thing Goes", "Unsinkable Molly Brown" (for the second time), and ourgreatest production to date "Fiddler On The Roof'. For 1971-72 "TheMusic Man" ,"The Pajama Game" and "The Merry Widow" played to ex-cellent houses. The season of 1972-73, just ended, saw productions of"Carousel". "I Do' I Do" and "Applause". .
