Hey everyone! My name is Le Jean Williams,
or better known as LJ. I am the President of
Duke Circle K (you can call us DUCK) and I
am also your District Service Chair for the
Carolinas District. Im glad to be your DSC
and I hope to get to meet a lot of you at this
years District Large Scale Service Project
(DLSSP) in Lake Waccamaw, NC at the Boys
& Girls Homes. During this FREE weekend,
we will all be staying at the Ambassador
Camp, a non-profit organization that exists
for the purpose of bringing children
together through the use of a program-
based week-long summer camp. DLSSP is a
must-do for a Circle K-er because you get to
make cool friends from other schools within
the district, as well as doing service for a fullday and really getting into the spirit of
Circle K. We will have more of an extended
interaction with the kids that are staying at
the Homes and hopefully Kiwanians as well.
For those of you unfamiliar with the event, DLSSP is a project clubs throughout our district
collaborate on once a semester for an entire weekend. We not only provide service for the Boys
and Girls Homes of Lake Waccamaw, but we also raise money and hold donations throughout
the academic year that goes to the families residing in those Homes. We hope youll make time
and join fellow Circle K-ers from September 7-9. But first, let us tell you a little bit about the
Boys & Girls Homes.

Boys & Girls Homesby Larry Hewett, Vice-President/Chief Advancement Officer
Boys and Girls Homes of North Carolina is located on a 150 acre campus at Lake
Waccamaw, NC and was established in 1954 by A.D. Peacock and a board of trustees.
A unique aspect of the Homes is its relationship with civic clubs. From 1958 to
1968, a cottage or home was constructed by Civitan, Lions, Jaycees, Kiwanis (1964),
Rotary, and Optimist, for children needing a place to live while dealing with issues of
abuse, neglect, or other family disorder. The Homes continue to examine its role in supporting the children
coming into care and provides services in both residential placement and foster care and adoption placement
More than 4000 children have been helped by the Homes with approximately 150 children
currently in care. In addition to basic food, clothing, shelter needs, the children receive
therapy, spiritual development, education, recreation, and World of Work
Experiences. Children graduating from high school while a
resident of the Homes receive support in attending
college if they wish.
In 2006, the Carolinas District of Circle K
International voted to make BGH its District Project and
in September 2006, 35 eager and energetic Circle K
members and advisors arrived on the BGH campus to
paint the Homes Country Store. After a long weekend the
group scraped old paint, applied a primer coat, andfinish coat to the buildinga monumental task! Circle K
members have provided terrific support to the Homes
and its children! Their efforts and gifts have supported
children and given them opportunities to rise from the
despair of abuse and neglect and become contributing
members of the greater society.
So, when is it happening?

In addition to the service component of the DLSSP weekend, there will also be othe
opportunities that I encourage everyone to take advantage of. We will be havingwhat we call a College Fair in which ALL the Circle K clubs in the district bring their
college gear down (e.g. shirts, banners, brochures, flyers, etc.), set up a table with a
their school material advertised, and will provide information about their school to tresidents of The Boys & Girls Homes who come out to look at all the colleges. More
information about this to come soon. Also related to the College Fair is the T-ShirtYardsale. This is just a small fundraiser well do over the weekend. Clubs may bring acollege attire they have (this will most likely be t-shirts but if you have other things fee
free to bring those as well) and every club will have the opportunity to sell their itemfor about $5/item (prices may vary depending on the item of course). DLSSP is only
weeks away so start promoting the event to your club as much as possible! See you
all soon!
