Dakota Territory Challenge, Rapid City, (605) 341-3667, bh4wheelers.com. This back road challenge offers everything from scenic trails to technical rock crawling. Trails are assigned general ratings that outline minimum vehicle requirements.

Hike to Cedar Butte, Badlands National Park, (605) 455-2878, nps.gov/badl. Enjoy panoramic views from the top of Cedar Butte during this 4 hour rugged walk. Register by calling the White River Visitor Center 605-455-2878.

Mt. Rushmore Rodeo at Palmer Gulch, Mt. Rushmore Resort at Palmer Gulch, (605) 574-2525, palmergulch.com. Events include bull riding, saddle bronc, bareback riding, team roping, barrel racing and mutton bustin’ fun for the kids. Free to resort & KOA guests. $10 for non-guests, $5 ages 6-12 and 5 under are free.
6th Crazy Horse Night Blast, Crazy Horse Memorial, (605) 673-4681, crazyhorsememorial.org. In observance of Crazy Horse’s death in 1877 and the commemoration of the 107th birth date of sculptor Korczak Ziolkowski born in 1908, this second night blast of the year (weather permitting) is a spectacular show of pyrotechnics. Admission to the Memorial is free after 5 pm, although a food donation is very much appreciated.

Black Hills Stratobowl Historic Hot Air Balloon Event, The Stratobowl, (605) 673-2520, blackhillsballoons.com. Held at the Stratobowl, you can view the balloon launch from the rim. Tickets are also available if you’d like to participate in the event.

From the Peter Norbeck Visitor Center, participants hike a paved path along a “creepy” route with costumed characters along the way. Hikes begin every 15 minutes from 5:30 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. Reservations for the hike are required. 27th & 28th

Make plans for the 5th annual Monster Ball on Friday with a live band, dancing, and prizes; and the annual Costume Contest with more than $8,000 in cash and prizes for the best costumes on Saturday.
