Fall Housing Updates: Q&A Session
Thursday, June 11
Question Answer
Can you talk about the closets? It looks like there is one in chapel
glen shared with two people.
Closets across campus will either be built-in closets or function as an mobile ottoman
for students to arrange and configure their rooms as they see fit. Closets on campus are
designed for either one or two students to share. Bedrooms in Heritage Commons and
offsite apartments will primarily have built-in closets, while rooms in Lassonde and
Kahlert Village will have mobile ottomans. Photos and dimensions of these closets and
other furniture can be found on our website: https://housing.utah.edu/housing-
options/room-types/
Also to help move in on the 19th if we clicked we want to move in
early and help move others in the next day so we automatically get
to do that or will you notify us
Traditionally, U of U Housing provides options for students to move in one day early
when they sign up for UCREW. With changes and adjustments to move-in due to the
current public health situation, and with Move-In Day being spread out across three
days this year (August 18, 19 & 20), our team is identifying ways and plans for how
UCREW might work this year in a way that promotes social distancing. More information
will be shared directly with residents via UMail and our website as it becomes available.
Are there any housing scholarships available for freshman students?
Housing & Residential Education works with a number of campus partners to ensure
that living on campus is an option to all students who wish to do so. With this in mind,
there are a few scholarships specifically for housing offered to first-year and upperclass
students. While these scholarships have been awarded for the upcoming academic year,
we work to update our Scholarships webpage with information as soon as it available. In
addition to housing specific scholarships, the University of Utah's Scholarships &
Financial Aid office has a robust scholarships page (scholarships.utah.edu) that all
students can visit to see what they qualify for. Keep in mind that scholarships and
financial aid that students receive that is over the cost of tuition will automatically be
applied towards housing & meal plan charges.
Is it less expensive to live off campus?
The truth is: it depends. The University of Utah is located in Salt Lake City, which is a
large metropolitan area. Apartments in close proximity to campus are often much more
expensive and do not include the cost of utilities, like wifi, electricity, or water. The cost
of living off campus also includes the cost to commute to campus and the cost of a
parking permit. While some residents may be able to find a room for rent in a house
that is shared with multiple other students or working professionals, these living
quarters often do not factor in the sense of community, the importance of your health
& well-being, or 24/7 staff to support you like on-campus living provides. The cost of on-
campus housing varies depending on the community, room type, and meal plan to be
accessible to a large number of students, and the cost of utilities is included.
After the November 26 final in-person class and the switch to online
classes, will housing and dining services be available to students?
Yes. Our office is working diligently with University leadership and local and state health
officials to be able to accommodate students who wish to remain on campus during the
online-learning portion of the fall academic calendar. Multiple options are being
considered and will be shared directly with residents once those have been solidified.
These options are being considered for all students living in residence halls for the 2020-
21 academic year, and the rate to stay in on-campus housing during the online period
would not be more than what is currently posted on our website. As a reminder,
students living in apartments and Lassonde Studios will be able to remain in their spaces
throughout the online period and winter break as that time is built into their housing
contract and rate.
Does the For Utah Scholarship cover the registration fee?
The For Utah Scholarship is designed to cover up to 100% of tuition dollars remaining
after all other means of financial aid and scholarships have been awarded. This
scholarship does not apply to housing or meal plan costs.
I plan on taking the international Leap U program, where in the
second semester I would transfer into the Asia Campus. Should I do
anything special with my housing application? How would housing
payments work?
Housing agreements are for the full academic year (fall and spring semesters). Students
planning on withdrawing for the University to study abroad, including for the
International Leap U program, should notify HRE at least 30 days before the beginning
of spring semester. Should students notify HRE at least 30 days prior the beginning of
spring semester, no cancellation or additional fees would be assessed. Should students
notify HRE 0-29 days prior to the beginning of spring semester, withdrawal fees may
apply. Visit our website for more information on how to terminate your contract and for
the full withdrawal schedule: https://housing.utah.edu/moving-in-out/moving-
out/termination/
I never filled out the under 18 housing agreement, is it too late to fill
it out and can I fill it out now?
It is not too late! Our housing application is still open for students who wish to live on
campus for the upcoming academic year. However, we are currently running a waitlist.
To join the waitlist as a student under 18, you will need to submit the U18 agreement.
Instructions are included directly on the agreement. Once our office processes your
agreement, a section of the application will open up that will allow you to join the
waitlist. More information about the waitlist can be found here:
https://housing.utah.edu/apply-reserve/waitlist/
Is family weekend cancelled too?Information about Parent & Family Weekend will be shared on this webpage soon:
https://orientation.utah.edu/parents/PFW.php
I apologize, I joined the presentation late, can we access this
PowerPoint somewhere?
The full Student & Family Q & A session can be found online here:
https://www.pqe.io/sign-up/voh/university-of-utah-
private?event=UniversityofUtahPrivate&account=UniversityofUtah
do the dorms have enough bandwidth to handle all the students
that will be online
Yes. Our office works directly with University of Utah IT to ensure that our wifi and
internet connectivity's bandwidth can accommodate the increase in traffic needed for
students to complete their coursework online.
Are freshman allowed to bring a car?
Yes. Freshman, and all other students on campus, are able to bring a car to campus. To
park on campus, students will need to purchase a parking permit. However, we strongly
encourage students to leave their car at home! In fact, 70% of first-year students choose
not to bring a car to campus and instead take advantage of the free transportation
options available as a University of Utah student. More information about
transportation options and parking passes can be found through Commuter Services'
website: https://commuterservices.utah.edu/
How will communal bathrooms work?
Housing at the University of Utah is unique in that the bathrooms on campus in
residence halls and apartments are likely much different than those on other campuses.
In a majority of our residence halls, two to three students will share a single-use
bathroom that is connected to their bedrooms (suite-style/jack & jill style). In other
areas, including cluster communities in Lassonde Studios or Kahlert Village, 8-10 private-
use bathrooms will be shared by students living in that cluster community. Each
bathroom includes a toilet, sink and shower behind a closable, lockable door. COVID-
update: cluster bathrooms will be assigned, so 3-4 students will share one bathroom in
their cluster community. Our custodial team will work to sanitize and disinfect cluster
bathrooms on an increased cleaning schedule. We also encourage students to be
proactive and disinfect their areas before and after use, as well.
If we’ve already been accepted into housing and chose a room, what
are the next steps to watch out for?
For students with a tentative booking on campus, the next step would be to log back
into the housing application, fill out the Addendum to the Resident Agreement Form
and pay the $200 reservation deposit to secure your space. For students with a reserved
booking, meaning they have paid the $200 deposit, the next steps would be to log back
into the housing application and fill out the Addendum to the Resident Agreement by
June 19. After the Addendum has been filled out and submitted, students should plan
on registering for Virtual NSO through the Office of Orientation & Transition if they have
not yet done so. Students should also remember to check their UMail frequently for
campus updates, including their mailing address and assigned move-in time. Move-in
information will also be shared on our Moving In webpage:
https://housing.utah.edu/moving-in-out/moving-in/
One big perk to Utah is gaining in-state after one year. How will this
be affected because of covid-19 and the modification to the fall
semester?
For the latest information about residency or questions regarding changes due to COVID-
19, students should visit or call the residency office here:
https://admissions.utah.edu/apply/residency/
are you able to talk about bed lofting as well. I want my bed lofted
but I'm not sure I want a bunk bed. I'm in chapel glen
Beds in Lassonde Studios, the Marriott Honors Community, and Kahlert Village are self-
lofting and can be adjusted to their desired height, up top 56". Bed-lofting in Heritage
Commons is a free optional service available to students to sign up for in their housing
application portal. If students have already submitted their application, you can also fill
out the form on our website here: https://housing.utah.edu/apply-reserve/optional-
services/ Bed-lofting is available on a first-come, first-served basis.
Has the U posted the new academic calendar?
The University of Utah has posted a modified academic calendar for fall 2020. This can
be found in full here: https://attheu.utah.edu/facultystaff/a-return-to-campus-in-fall/
Housing-specific information can be found on our Fall 2020 Updates page here:
housing.utah.edu/coronavirus/fall-2020-updates
Will the dorms cost less now? Bc we won’t be their as long.
Apartment and Lassonde Studios' rates include the online portion of the new modified
fall calendar as well as winter break. Up until the end of spring semester. The rates on
our website for these areas includes these adjustments. Our team is working through a
few different options for our residence halls, though the cost will not be more than the
rate that is currently shown on our website.
will residence fees be reduced due to extended winter break and
online instruction
Yes, prices for residence halls (Chapel Glen, Gateway Heights, Kahlert Village, Officers
Circle and Sage Point) will be adjusted based on a new closing date at the end of in-
person instruction. Students will have the option to extend their stay on campus for the
virtual instruction period for an additional fee.
Wait so the academic school year will be done by the end of
December??
No. Adjustments that have been made at this time are for the fall 2020 semester. At this
time, no changes have been made to the spring 2020 academic or housing calendar.
will you release a packing list?
Good news! Our team has developed a packing list that is available on our website
(https://housing.utah.edu/blog/a-residents-packing-list/) and included in the Student
Housing Guide linked in the Housing Module of Virtual NSO and on the Pre Arrival
section of our Moving In webpage: https://housing.utah.edu/moving-in-out/moving-
in/pre-arrival/
I applied to Lassonde but haven't heard anything back. I am an
incoming freshman. When should i expect to hear back?
To be eligible to live in Lassonde Studios, a student should complete an application
through the Lassonde Institute and complete a housing application through HRE and
indicate an interest in living in Lassonde in the LLC question. Lassonde is currently full
and is running a waiting list. You will be contacted directly if/when a space in Lassonde
becomes available for you. For more information, reach out to Pat Jones at
Will you have the same move in day as your roommate??Yes, move in times will be assigned by areas. You will have the same move-in time as
your roommate.
Where do you apply for student housing?!Full step-by-step instructions to apply for housing can be found on our website here:
https://housing.utah.edu/apply-reserve/process/
Will our arrival time be close to our roommate's arrival time during
move-in days?Yes, your assigned arrival time will be the same as your roommate's.
When you say the dorms close, does that mean that students in
sage point will have to move out all of their belongings until they
return in the spring? Or do you just mean the dorm is closed but
students can keep their belongings in the room
Residence halls on campus close for winter break. Students in these areas are able to
leave their belongings in their rooms, but should plan to take any items they will need
during the break with them as they will not have access to their space during this time.
This does not apply to students in Lassonde Studios or apartment options as these
communites remain open during the break.
If we want to move in and be part of the moving in crew are we still
able to?
UCREW is being modified to appropriately practice social distancing across the multiple
move in days. For more information and to sign up, visit our website:
https://housing.utah.edu/ucrew/
When is the deadline for payment plans the UofU offers for
Housing?
Housing & meal plan charges are included on the same bill as tuition through University
Income Accounting. Students can sign up for payment plans through their office. The U
offers two payment plan options, either a four- or five-month for that semester's
charges. Students interested in enrolling in the five-month payment option for fall
semester should sign up by July 20. Students interested in enrolling in the four-month
payment plan option for fall semester should enroll by September 4. Students not
enrolled in a payment plan will need to have all semester charges paid in full by
September 4, 2020.
In the housing application it has a section where you can volunteer
to help out with move in as well as moving in early. Is that still
happening, and if so how has it changed?
UCREW is being modified to appropriately practice social distancing across the multiple
move in days. For more information and to sign up, visit our website:
https://housing.utah.edu/ucrew/
Will the food plans cost less bc the week numbers have changed?
Meal plan and residence hall charges are currently under review. Draft rates can be
found on our website, though any adjustments to rates will not be higher than the
current rates listed. Our team will share out the final rates once those are available.
Would you suggest applying for housing for full time students (For
Utah)?
Yes! If you are interested in living on campus for the upcoming academic year, the
application is open now, though we are currently running a waitlist. Students who live
on campus traditionally have had higher GPAs as well as graduated faster than students
who live off campus. As we are currently running a waitlist, students should plan to
apply as soon as possible for the best chance of receiving a housing offer.
To clarify, in Kahlert Village, our child is reserved in a double room
that shares a bathroom with a single - is she considered a double or
triple?
This room-type configuration is considered a double since they share a bedroom with
one other student.
What should we expect if we signed up for u-crew?More information will be sent to you via email regarding your UCREW assignment and
changes due to COVID-19. Stay tuned for more soon!
if you have a single, with a bathroom that is attached to another
single and signed up with a roommate, will you and your roommate
be together in the same room type
For questions about roommates or suitemates, you are able to find more specific
information by logging back into your housing application and navigating to Room
Selection page.
What does it mean to be waitlisted ??
Being on the housing waitlist means you do not currently have a specific room assigned
to you. Our team works diligently to send out housing offers to students on the waitlist
as spaces become available. You can learn more about the waitlist on our website here:
https://housing.utah.edu/apply-reserve/waitlist/
So if you are doing the U Crew you will receive an email on the move-
in time or should you just plan on moving in on August 18 from 8AM-
6PM.
All students who signed up for UCREW will receive an email with updates and more
instructions. This email update will also include information about early move in
instructions for UCREW volunteers who live on campus. Stay tuned for more soon!
Could room assignments be changed before move-in day?
Rooms will not likely change prior to move-in day. However, the Resident Addendum
asks students to acknowledge that their room reservation is for that room type rather
than that specific room. HRE reserves the right to make adjustments to room
assignments as needed.
When I try to log into the Housing U portal, I am met with the
following error; "Login to StarRez portal failed." Each time I try again
it spits out the same response.
Students who encounter an error when logging into the Housing portal should
send an email from their UMail account to [email protected]. Our team
will work to identify and resolve to issue so you may continue.
If we haven’t received the addendum who should we connect with? The Addendum to the Resident Agreement can be found directly by logging back into
your housing application via CIS.
How much is housing ?
The cost to live on campus varies by the community you wish to live in, the room type
you select, and the meal plan you choose. Typically, a double room will cost less than a
single room type. To get a better idea, we offer a Rate Estimator Tool on our website
that accounts for these options: https://housing.utah.edu/rate-estimator/ Please note
that our office is currently working on rate adjustments that may not yet be reflected,
though final pricing will not exceed the amounts shown currently.
Can you live with a roommate of your choice?
Students who apply by the priority deadline (March 10 for LLCs or April 1 for general
housing) are able to create a roommate group in the application. While this does not
guarantee that all students in the roommate group will be able to reserve a room, suite,
or apartment together, it does increase this likelihood as it gives all students the same
reservation time. Students who apply after this date are able to reserve rooms based on
availability. Please note, our office is currently running a waitlist. Waitlist offers are sent
out as they become available and do not take roommate groups into consideration.
If I've been granted a deferral, do I get my original housing deposit
back or does that just roll over to when I come back to the U?
The housing application fee is a one-time fee. Once you have paid that fee using your
UID, you do not have to pay it again. You would not need to pay the application fee
again when re-applying to live on campus after your deferral. The reservation fee does
not roll over with deferrals and is associated with the semester you reserve a space.
How will social distancing apply to LLC’s and Officers Circle houses?
Housing reservations on campus will continue as normal for all students, except for
those who reserved a room in a triple or in a loft in Lassonde Studios. These students
have been contacted directly with their options. For all other housing reservations,
adjustments have been made to housing policies to better promote the health and well-
being of our community. These adjustments can be found in full in the Addendum to the
Resident Agreement in the housing application. This Addendum must be filled out and
submitted by June 19, 2020.
When will residents start receiving offers for rooms?
Waitlist offers are sent out to students as they become available. More information
about the waitlist process as well as weekly waitlist updates can be found on our
housing website here: https://housing.utah.edu/apply-reserve/waitlist/
For clarification, will we have to wear a mask at all times, within
dorm rooms, while other people (including roommates) are
present?
Guidelines may require students to wear a face covering in all public areas. In the
context of the residence halls, this would mean in all areas outside of your room.
Can we reserve housing for spring semester and not fall?Yes. Our spring 2021 only housing application will open for reservations in early
November.
Will fraternities still have rush?Fraternity and Sorority life are still participating in the recruitment process. For more
information and to sign up, visit: https://fraternityandsororitylife.utah.edu/
Hi! I have a few questions...
1. Classes will end BY November 26th... that is Thanksgiving... will
classes still possibly be held on Nov. 26th? When do students find
out their last day to plan flights home?
2. If student requested a lofted bed in their dorm room, when will
they find out if they get it?
3. You mentioned that students "may not be able to" have guests...
is this just in their rooms or in common areas of dorms, too? Is this
still up in the air or can they definitely not have guests?
Thank you!
The last day a student has an in-person course may depend on the individual class they
are enrolled in. There will be no classes on Thursday, November 26 as that is a
University Closure Day. Students will know more information about their classes after
registering and/or receiving syllabi from their professors. We will contact students who
did NOT receive their request for bed lofting prior to move-in day. If you do not hear
from us regarding bed lofting, you can assume that you received the lofting service. The
HRE team is currently developing the parameters around the guest policy for the fall
semester during COVID-19. More information will be shared soon.
I am living in kahlert village and really want a single or double suite
but currently am going to have a cluster double. Is it possible to
switch with someone or get a room that is open because a student
registered for housing but decided to attend elsewhere?
We are currently running a waiting list for all housing areas. As spaces become available,
they will be offered to students on the waiting list so that they are able to have the
chance to live on campus. You may request for a room change after the first two weeks
of the semester.
If a room isn't available and I live out of state, what will I do/where
will I stay?
If you are on the waitlist, our team works to separate students into six different waitlists
based on their class year. We also prioritize students who are coming from out of
state/out of the country when sending out waitlist offers. We will continue to send out
offers throughout the remainder of the summer and into the fall semester as spaces
become available. While we cannot guarantee a housing offer will be sent, in the past,
we have been able to accommodate all students on the waitlist.
Are there grants still available to help pay for housing?

Can Lexie repeat what she said about the deposit?
Students who cancelled housing contracts by June 15 received a full refund on their
$200 room reservation. Students who cancel after June 15, may be subject to additional
contract termination fees. More information can be found here:
https://housing.utah.edu/moving-in-out/moving-out/termination/
So if I am going to be a Sophmore, but this will be my first year at
the U of U, do I need to live on campus my first year? The University of Utah does not have a live-in requirement for any year classification.
Are the dorms carpeted? Yes. Bedrooms in on-campus housing do have low-pile carpeting.
in sage point 810, in the very middle room, is the closet on the
outside or inside?
Closets in the middle single suite space are wardrobes, meaning they are not built into
the space. The wardrobe is a furniture piece that can be moved around wherever you
would like in the room.
Will my roommate and I get the same move in day/ arrival time? Yes, roommates will have the same assigned arrival time.
Will it cost extra to stay for the online portion of the semester? I'm
not too keen on moving back home early
We are developing plans for closing the residence halls for the virtual instruction period
of the fall semester. Rates for residence halls will be adjusted to be cheaper based on a
new closing date. If a student chooses to extend their stay on campus for the virtual
instruction period, they will pay a fee. This will not exceed the cost of a typical full fall
semester.
Do you anticipate the students being able to move back after
Christmas break?
Yes. At this time, no changes have been made to spring 2020. If adjustments become
necessary, the University and Housing & Residential Education will work proactively to
send out information directly to students.
How do I know if I am on the wait list? If you are unsure if you are on the waitlist, you can log back into your housing
application or call/email our office at 801-587-2002 or [email protected]
Will university facilities such as library, field house, dining halls, etc.
be available for students who decide to remain on campus during
the online instruction period?
Yes, though hours of operation may vary slightly from standard hours.
For those on the waitlist, when will we know when we get a room? You will be notified via your University email (UMail). We recommend checking it
frequently as waitlist offers are only valid for 48 hours before they expire.
Is there a limit to how many people can come and help me move in?
While there is no "limit," we do recommend limiting the number of friends/family you
have helping you move in to better promote physical distancing and to limit the amount
of people in our residence halls to as few as possible.
if you are on the waitlist, are you able to secure a roommate? if so,
how?
Waitlist offers are sent out as spaces become available. If sent an offer in a double
room, you will likely already have a roommate reserved in that space. Please note HRE
does not pair or assign roommates; offers are sent based on room availability and your
place on the waitlist.
Will all dining halls be open in some form or another after
November 26?
Dining will be available during the virtual instruction period. More information about
dining and other details related to the extended stay period will be shared soon.
Is there anywhere freshman can stay with a kitchen? And are
microwaves/toaster ovens allowed in dorms?
Residence halls on campus are all equipped with kitchenettes in each of the buildings on
campus. These kitchenettes house a full-size oven/stove combo, refrigerator and
microwave. Students are also able to either bring a personal microwave/mini-fridge
with them to campus to live in their room, or rent these through our office as an
optional service. Please note we do not allow toasters in our housing, or other
appliances with open/hot coils.
How likely will a first year student on the wait list, get a room on
campus? Or should we be looking for alternative housing?
While we cannot guarantee that all students on the waitlist will receive a housing offer,
in previous years, we have been able to accommodate all students on the waitlist.
This is kind of off topic but you register for classes when you do
student orientation right?
Yes. First-year students will see a hold on their account to register for classes until they
meet with an academic advisor during Virtual NSO. The University of Utah also released
that there will be a campus-wide registration hold until July 1. More info can be found
here: https://attheu.utah.edu/announcements/registration-paused-until-july-1-for-
course-schedule-updates/
Are cars acceptable for freshman undergraduate students?
Can you switch roommates to be in a different residential hall with
someone you already know?
We are currently running a waiting list and al housing areas are full. Students can
request a room change after the first two weeks of the semester.
I'm on the housing waitlist and my friend is also on the waitlist. Is
there any way to request them as a roommate? That option wasn't
available in the waitlist housing application.
Waitlist offers are sent out as spaces become available. If sent an offer in a double
room, you will likely already have a roommate reserved in that space. Please note HRE
does not pair or assign roommates; offers are sent based on room availability and your
place on the waitlist.
Are other students who also attend the university prohibited from
visiting dorm rooms that aren’t theirs?
Your health and overall well-being is our top priority. Due to the current public health
situation, HRE has modified our guest policy expectations. For fall 2020, residents on
campus may be prohibited from bringing guests, including other residents and U of U
students, into their housing spaces. This includes residence halls and apartments. These
policies are in place to limit the amount of new community members in our resident
spaces and to allow HRE to better conduct contact tracing if a covid-19 outbreak occurs.
While we know this update to our guest policy is inconvenient, please know that these
changes are made with your health and safety in mind. A full list of expectations can be
found in the Addendum to the Resident Agreement, which can be found and submitted
by logging back into your housing application.
Are there options for off-campus student housing other than
dorms?
Yes. Housing & Residential Education offers apartment-style options in downtown Salt
Lake City for upperclass and graduate students. These include U of U at Block 44,
Downtown Commons 1, and Downtown Commons 2. Visit our website for images and
floor plans: https://housing.utah.edu/housing-options/undergraduate-housing/
Apartments are also offered through Utah Student Apartments (USA). More information
about USA options can be found on their website here: apartments.utah.edu
With these new changes, what impact does this have on those trying
to gain residency this academic year?
For the latest information about residency or questions regarding changes due to COVID-
19, students should visit or call the residency office here:
https://admissions.utah.edu/apply/residency/
What is included in the kitchenettes on each floor of Kahlert Village?
Where are the centralized laundry machines located?
Thank you!
Kitchenettes include a fridge, oven/stove, sink, and microwave. Laundry machines are
located on each floor of the building.
If I am on the wait list, should i get off the list, will I receive all the
information that all the previously admitted students have already
received all at once, or will they come out over time?
As a student on the waiting list, you will receive access to the Resident Agreement
Addendum after receiving an offer to reserve a room on campus. All other updates and
information can be viewed on HRE's website at housing.utah.edu/coronavirus
Did you say COVID19 test was mandatory before moving in?We are currently developing plans related to COVID-19 tests and living on campus. We
will share more information soon.
is it too late to apply for the scholarship where you had a
gradparent attend utah?
To browse scholarships you may be eligible for, visit the U's scholarship web page at:
scholarships.utah.edu

should plan to move out at this time or request an extension to stay on campus for an

semester should sign up by July 20. Students interested in enrolling in the four-month

desk. Students are encouraged to wait to bring cooking supplies until after they arrive
on campus to determine what they need and will use.
Do you recommend the Block 150 or the Plan 15 meal plan?
Meal plan selection is based on personal preference. The Block 150 plan is a semester
based plan, meaning you have 150 meals to use over the course of the semester. The
Plan 15 meal is a weekly plan, and you will receive 15 meals each week. Think about
how often you plan to eat on-campus and how you prefer to budget your meals - does
semesterly work better for you or do you want a fresh start each week? Students are
able to request to change their meal plan during the first week of school. If you arrive to
campus and decide the meal plan you picked isn't for you, you can request to change it.
