Letter from the ChairGreetings alumni and friends,

iNSIGHTSis a annual newsletter published and distributed by the University of Florida Department of Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation and UF Health Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine Institute.

In this issue of INSIGHTS, we highlight our graduates and incoming residents and

fellows. In addition, we welcome Luis Pulido, MD to the faculty of our adult arthroplasty and joint reconstruction surgical service.

The department continues to grow and prosper. We now have clinical operations in Gainesville at OSMI, the CMS building, the Haile clinic and most recently the new Heart, Vascular and Neuro tower at UF. Some of the faculty also travel to provide service in Ocala, the Villages and in Orlando. We are eagerly awaiting completion of a new home for our partners in neurology. When their building is complete we will occupy the entire OSMI with orthopedics and related operations. Members of the faculty, staff and research division are

making discoveries and making great strides with translational science.

The Enneking Society annual meeting will be held this fall. This event is both intellectually stimulating and collegial. Please attend to catch up on some interesting orthopedic topics and to get together with old friends and new colleagues. We hope to see you then.

Best wishes,

Mark T. Scarborough, MD Chair, UF Department of Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation

Spring in Holland is a glorious time, with the tulips in full bloom and when the warm weather is matched and often

bettered by the warmth of the Dutch. It was around this time of year that the 2018 European Musculo-Skeletal Oncology Society was being held in Amsterdam and around which the Second Advanced surgical techniques in pelvic reconstruction was planned as a pre-course. It was the perfect opportunity to strengthen old bonds, forge new ones, and to be exposed to refreshing new ways of approaching orthopaedic oncology.

Andre Spiguel and I met up with Adam Lindsay (a former UF fellow and current faculty at the University of Connecticut) at the airport and kicked off our whirlwind European tour. A 20-minute train ride from the airport at Amsterdam through the Dutch countryside and we were at the Leiden Central station where we met up with two current UF oncology fellows, Adam Wooldridge and Colin Anderson.

Leiden is a bustling college town and home to Universiteit Leiden or Leiden University. Leiden University is the oldest university in the Netherlands, having been founded in 1575, and being associated with many great discoveries and inventions including the identification of Factor V Leiden and the first practical electrocardiogram by Willem Einthoven. The Second Advanced surgical techniques in pelvic reconstruction course was organized by Professor Sander Dijkstra of the Leiden University Medical Center (LUMC) and hosted most graciously by members his department. The course with a participant to faculty ratio of around 1:3 was the perfect blend of discussion of controversies, exposure to the novel surgical techniques, beer and Bitterballs (a Dutch snack and perfect accompaniment to beer that tastes much better than its crude English translation sounds). With our first stop over, we proceed to the Amsterdam for the EMSOS.

The EMSOS meeting in Amsterdam is the musculoskeletal oncology meeting on the “other side” of the Atlantic, and in some sense similar in scope to the Musculoskeletal Tumor Society Meeting in the USA. The diverse nations of origins of the participants definitely did lend a very different flavor to this meeting and I found it marked by a conviviality that I soon learnt was uniquely Dutch. While the meeting was European, many participants hailed from outside Europe, with numerous attendees from the USA, and the Asia Pacific. It was a good time to catch up former oncology fellows such as Gerald Powell

Team Tumor Goes to Amsterdam and England

of Melbourne, Australia and to reminisce regarding the Gainesville of old with Professor Antoni Taminiau who on his return from a fellowship with Professor Enneking went on to spearhead the development of the Orthopaedic Oncology Unit at Leiden.

With the meeting behind us, Andre and I proceeded to our final stop in the United Kingdom, the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital in Birmingham. For our 2 day visit to the busiest orthopaedic oncology unity in the UK and arguable in Europe, we were fortunate to have a great host in Professor Lee Jeys. We observed in surgery, sat in on a multidisciplinary sarcoma board where nearly 80 patients were discussed, and explored some back lanes and pubs of Birmingham with Professor Jeys.

This marked the close of our 10 days of combining oncology with Bitterballs and bitter ales. A most sweet experience, we came out much enriched by the experience and closer to our fellow orthopaedists both stateside and across the pond.

The William F. Enneking, MD Society annual fall meeting took place on November 18, 2017 at the Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine

Institute. The program featured several prominent lectures including keynote speaker, Dr. Dempsey Springfield. Following the meeting, participates joined the annual Department of Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation Tailgate and the UF vs. UAB football game.

The William F. Enneking, MD Society was created in 2016 to bring UF Orthopaedics alumni and friends together on a regular basis to network, socialize, share current trends in orthopaedic surgery and support the education, research and clinical mission of the UF Orthopaedics Department. Dr. Thomas Wright is the Society’s inaugural president.

The Society will host two meetings a year, once in the fall over a Gator football weekend and once at the Academy Annual Meeting, with CME credit available at the fall meeting.

There are two membership levels — an Annual Membership for a donation of $350 or a “Lifetime Membership” for a contribution of $5,000. Contributions to the endowment are tax deductible and will support the activities of the Enneking Society and the UF Department of Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation.
