Perryville looks to rebound from rough 2011By Bill [email protected]

The Perryville High School Pirates are coming off a rough season in which they won only one game, finishing at 1-9.

But the numbers for the Pirates are good this year so far. “They are better this year than they were last year,” said Pirates Head Coach Mike Wojtczuk. “I think things are starting to turn around.”

Seven players left the squad due to graduation.

“They were steady players for us and they were just all around good people and we are going to miss those guys,” stated Wojtczuk. “We have younger guys stepping up and are going to fill those slots for us. And we are real excited about the season.”

At Sikeston the Pirates participated in a contact scrimmage. They came away with no injuries.

“The main thing about that scrim-mage was we were able to come out in-jury free and that was our number one goal,” said Wojtczuk. “We learned a lot

about our kids and it was a good gauge to see where we were at. We played some of the better competition in southeast Missouri along with a lot of the people that we are going to see down the road. We are excited about the way things turned out. We had really had a positive experience.”

With it being early in the season, Wojtczuk is diligent about talking play-ers. “We look at the team aspect that there is not one guy more important than the other guy,” stated Wojtczuk. “We

have some players that will be splitting time with each other. We have a lot of kids that have spent a lot of time in the weight room. We have some size up on the offensive line.”

Graduating last season was the quar-terback. This year sophomore Tyler Holligan and a junior, in Alex Plunkett will play this key position.

Last season some of the kids got some recognition and will be back.

“We are proud of the things that Levi (Zook) was able to accomplish and Devin (Blandford) and some of the other guys had lot of post season honors,” stated Wojtczuk. “Those things are good, but we are focusing on what is going on this year as opposed to what has happened in the past.”

The conference the Prates play in is one of the toughest around. Each week is a tough one. “The thing is you never know from week to week what team is going to knock off what team,” said the head coach. “You have Maplewood, Ste. Genevieve and Park Hills who are prob-ably going to be at the top of the con-

ference. Then you have Fredericktown and us and Potosi. That is why you line up and lay the game because anything can happen on any given night.”

According to Wojtczuk, there are around 70 kids in the program. “Varsity wise I don’t think we will pick any play-ers once school starts,” said Wojtczuk. “I have never been real big on picking up varsity players when school starts. I always let freshmen come out when school starts but varsity wise, you have these guys out here that have been pay-ing the price all summer long. For me to let someone come out when school starts just because they didn’t want to come out in the heat, I will not let that happen.”

New offense, defense keys to SV successJared W. [email protected]

The St. Vincent Indians football team’s strength is on their defense, and it is looking to get back to a more balanced attack offensively.

“Our defense is going to be the back-bone of this team,” said Indians football coach Paul Sauer. “We have a lot of team speed on both sides of the ball and we are going to be able to attack (opposing teams).”

Sauer, along with new offensive coor-dinator Greg Finger, have installed a new offense that is flexible and incorporates some old concepts with new ideas in order to create the balanced attack the In-dians want to take to opposing defenses.

“Greg has really stepped up. He is enthusiastic, has a ton of energy and the boys are responding well to him,” said Sauer. “We have kind of gone back to the basics with our I-formation package and we are doing some of our spread stuff from last year. We want to establish our run game and throw the football when we want to.

“We will try to manipulate the de-fense by taking what they give us and exploiting their weaknesses,” said Sauer. “We don’t have a lot of returning starters

on the offensive side of the ball but do return a lot to players with a lot of game experience.”

Trent Elder has moved from his start-ing role, and the teams most productive wide receiver in 2011 (31 catches, 398 yards), to quarterback in 2012. Elder is not new to the position, as he ran St. Vin-cent’s offense as a sophomore when the Indians starter went down with an injury.

To help Elder with the offensive bal-ance the Indians seek, the versatile and speedy Alex Winkler will take hand-offs and work at receiver, depending on the Indians in game strategy. Winkler is the top returning rusher from last season, after averaging nearly six yards a carry last season as a sophomore, and is the top returning receiver (29 catches, 334

yards) not playing quarterback. Junior guard Zach Rollet and center

Josh Mattingly will anchor the offensive line as the only returning starters. They will be joined by Derek Unterreiner, who also saw time at center, senior guard Lucas Carroll, senior tackle Dylan Hell-man and junior tackle Josh Hunt.

“Offensive line is the key for us. The boys have bulked up and spent a lot of time in the weight room the past year and are working hard,” said Sauer. “We are a little bigger than we’ve been the past few years and have some experience on the line, but a few players are going to have to step into their roles quickly.”

Tight ends, senior Trenton Gremaud and junior Kevin Mattingly, as well as slot receiver Jesse Francis, will provide good targets for Elder in the passing game. While senior running back Dylan Richardet and junior fullback Levi Gotto will provide punch in the running game.

“I’m pleased with where we are (right now) but probably wish we were a little farther along,” said Sauer. “But most all coaches are feeling that way right now.”

Defensively, St. Vincent’s 3-3 base package allows Coach Sauer the flex-ibility to bounce back and forth to de-fend a variety of offenses. Seven of the defenses top 10 tacklers from last year

return and, because of the evolution of high school offenses in recent years, defensive flexibility, return of experi-ence and depth is going to be vital to the Indians this season.

“One thing I really like about our defense is our team speed,” said Sauer. “It will be the backbone of the team and a plus for us, especially early on because defenses are typically further along of offenses.”

The Indians defensive line will have Vince King on the edge, as well as re-turning starters Lucas Carroll and Rob-bie Wingerter.

Sauer believes the defensive line can attract some double teams and pro-vide a good rush on opposing quarter-backs.

The Indians linebackers are deep and talented group with a lot of expe-rience and athleticism. A healthy Josh Mattingly at middle linebacker is a solid run stopper up the middle, and outside Levi Gotto, Alex Winkler and Trenton Gremaud are going to be able to run some people down.

“This very well could be the best linebacking corps I’ve had the pleasure of coaching, and I’ve had some dan-dies over the years,” Sauer said. “Not to take anything away from the groups from the past, but I don’t know if we have ever been as deep as we are this year.”

In the defensive backfield the Indi-ans will have Jesse Francis at corner, Dylan Richardet at free safety, and could put Trent Elder in there, who started last year on defense.

The challenge is going to be pre-venting the big play and playing a solid four quarters of bend-but-don’t-break

defense. “Our Achille’s heel last year was get-

ting teams in third and forever and giving up the big play for a first down, and hope-fully we can avoid that this year,” said Sauer. “We did well against the run last year but are going to work hard to prevent

the big play this year.“The boys have worked hard through

their off-season work,” Sauer said. “Their talent and personalities are a good mix and I believe if we continue to work hard we can be a pretty good football team and win some ball games.”

St. Vincent’s aggressive defense sacks Sumner’s quarterback. The Indians whipped the Bulldogs 45-22 last Friday.

HIGH SCHOOL and YOUTH FOOTBALL

New playoffs ‘more closely resemble district championships’Jared W. [email protected]

A new high school football playoff format was unanimously approved in April at the Missouri State High School Activities Assn. Board of Directors meet-ing, and will be used in the 2012 football season.

MSHSAA said in a press release that, “This format would more closely resem-ble the district championships in all of our other team sports.”

Whereas the previous playoff system comprised of a seven-game regular sea-son followed by four-team pool play dis-trict in weeks 8 through 10, the new play-off format will allow schools to schedule up to nine regular season games.

In the old system, the top two finish-ing teams from each district advanced to the bracket play State playoffs. Under the new playoff format, an eight-team brack-et play district tournament will begin in Week 10 and the winner of the eight-team district will advance to state quarterfinals.

The classification of schools remains the same under the new format; schools will be placed in districts based on enroll-ment and geographical location.

The largest 32 schools in the State are placed in Class 6. Class 1 consists of the smallest 64 schools with the next 64 schools being in Class 2, the next 64 will make up Class 3 and the next 64 are placed in Class 4.

The remaining schools, 50 in this case, in the State are placed in Class 5.

St. Vincent will compete in the eight-team Class 1, District 1 with Hayti, Ca-bool, Chaffee, Crystal City, Portageville, Thayer and Valle Catholic.

Perryville will be in the eight-team Class 4, District 1 with Cape Central, DeSoto, Farmington, Festus, Hillsboro, North County and Sikeston.

Under the previous format, a team could theoretically lose their first seven games and still make the playoffs by win-ning as few as one game in district play. Although a team could still make it to Week 11 with one win, the new system will make getting past the first round of district play extremely difficult.

To determine district seeding, a four-part mathematical formula was devel-

oped. The points from each of the four categories (referred to as A, B, C and D for the purposes of this story) are added together to determine a teams total points. The team with the highest point total in each district receives the 1 seed with the lowest point earning team being seeded last.

In Part A of the formula, teams will receive 20 points for a win, 10 points for a loss and 15 points for an overtime loss. The sum of all points earned for each game result throughout the season are then divided by the team’s total number of games played to determine the total points for Part A of the formula.

Part B of the formula awards teams a 10-point credit for each class team it plays up. A Class 1 team would receive 20 points for playing a Class 3 team. The sum of the points accumulated is divided by the number of games played to de-termine the total points for Part B of the formula. No points are taken away if a team plays a lower class.

St. Vincent football coach Paul Sauer said, “The results of playing a tough schedule (against larger schools) like ours is a benefit under the new playoff format. You always want to win but can still earn points if you lose against a larger school.”

Part C of the formula is a bit more complex and takes into account the strength of schedule based on the win-

loss record of a team’s opponents. The MSHSAA rule is written as follows: “Points from opponent’s schedule by taking the sum of the win/loss record from each team you have played, times the points for a win (20) and loss (10), minus your contribution to the oppo-nent’s record, divided by the total num-ber of games played, minus the number of games you played.”

The final part of the formula takes into consideration the final scores of a team’s games.

The point differential for each game played, not to exceed +13 for a win or -13 in a loss, is added together and di-vided by the number of games played to get Part D of the formula.

The point system will be tracked weekly on www.mshsaa.org so teams can monitor their district standing as the season progresses. The running total with the previous week’s points will be posted by noon the first business day of the week.

The Districts that Perryville High School and St. Vincent compete in and their 2011 records were used as ex-amples by MSHSAA to show the final results of the formula applied to the dis-trict seeding. Using lasts year’s records St. Vincent would have traveled to Valle Catholic and Perryville to Sikeston for the district tournaments first round in Week 10.

For Perryville Soccer Coach Jerry Fulton, with all that was lost last year, putting the pieces in the right place will be the key to a successful season this year.

Gone are seven boys and a lot of tal-ent went with them.

“Some of those players are going to be hard to replace,” said Fulton. “Play-ers like Bryce Weibrecht, Alex Robinson and Tyler Lawrence all of those guys were very good players and had been with us four years.”

There are 32 boys currently on the team, and Fulton expects with the begin-ning of school. He held a summer camp this year with 30-40 players, and there were some girls in the mix, which helped the numbers. Being involved in both the boys and girls programs, Fulton thinks, is a key to get kids out.

“It helps to be involved in both pro-grams with coach Matt Spinner and my-self,” stated Fulton. “Younger players came out, which was really good to see.

So I think both of us coaches being in-volved with both programs gets them a little more interested.”

Looking to get the start in goal will be Luke Dobbelare.

“We tried Luke this summer in the Showcase in O’Fallon and he did very well for us,” stated Fulton. “We played some big high schools out of St. Louis and did very well.

“We still have a lot of leadership com-ing back, some experience with seven or eight seniors this year that have been on the team for four years,” said Fulton. “So there is quite a bit of talent coming back.”

Coming back this year will be Alex Thieret, who is very quick and a good scorer. Nick Pingel, who will be up there with Thieret, also has good speed. Matt Moran will be anchoring the top of the defense, which he played very well last season as a freshman. Kyle Thieret will also return as a senior.

Nate Kinninson is a strong player and will anchor midfield. Besides him there is Austin Roth, a very strong and fast player. A couple of sophomores will also

see time at midfield. On defense the Pirates have Karsten

Lowman as a sweeper. Jordan Thieret will also be back this year, as will two or three other strong fullbacks.

“The team is pretty solid as long as I get everybody in the right place,” said Fulton. “We should be pretty decent. I think we are going to be okay.”

Attitudes of the boys have been good both in the summer and now in prac-tice. The kids are willing to work hard and reap the rewards. Their enthusiasms, their willingness to work hard to ac-complish want they want, are some of the things the coaches see in this year’s team.

“You know I believe every team I have coach every year have set the same goals,” said Fulton. “They have set no goals any differently. They want to win every tournament they play in would like to win conference and district.”

The district will be tough with the Notre Dame and Sikeston. “The last two years we have be set up to win confer-ence and blew it,” Fulton recalls. “Last year we lost it on penalty kicks. So their

goals are obtainable — it is up to them to stay focused and go reach them.

“Even our young players coming up have participated all summer and understand what we are asking,” said Fulton. “The guys are buying into the program as they want to get better.

“They survived the first week which is al-ways the toughest conditioning week.”

Pirates looking for new pitcher, catcherBy Bill [email protected]

The Perryville Lady Pirates softball team will have a new look this year — they will be looking for a pitcher and catcher for this season.

Gone from last year’s 17-8 team are players Casey Hotop and Morgan Baer, who took care of the pitching and catch-ing duties. The team also lost its third baseman in Brittany Young and a utility player in Destine Herschbach. Last sea-son, they finished second in the district behind Notre Dame.

Response from the girls have been great so far this year, according to Per-ryville Lady Prates Softball Coach Jeff Steffens. “Over the summer we had a good number in attendance as 18-25 girls came to work out. So that was a good number for the summer. They worked very hard their first day of regu-lar practice.

“Always when you lose a pitcher

and catcher, the way they played, and Morgan’s batting average and throw-ing out runners, it is difficult to replace them,” said Steffens. “But I think Kelcie Fahnestock, Aleshia Reiss and Amiee More have been practicing pitching. So there are a lot of kids that can come in and hopefully throw strikes. The biggest part is trying to find people behind them that can catch the ball when it is put into play.”

The coaches are looking for a catcher. “Right now it is a battle between two

freshmen Lilly Pecaut and Emma Nel-son,” said Steffens. “Sophomore Catrina More who is showing some good things. It will be one of those three and if I had to pick today Lilly Pecaut would get the start. Of course that may change from day to day.

“There are four or five girls Catrina More plus a couple of freshmen girls that could fill that role,” stated Steffens. “When you lose three players like that all you can hope is that some of the kids will

step up and fill those holes. We are not saying they have to hit .300 — just do the basic fundamentals and contribute. Those were three big players to lose.”

Coming back and looking to contrib-ute to the team is Kelcie Fahnestock, who will be a senior and was picked last year as First Team All-Conference and 2nd All District. She was a .421 hitter for the team.

Also coming back is Tiara Sparkman, who was the second baseman last season with a .229 average. Haley Richardet manned the shortstop position last year and had a .219 average. Aleshia Reiss, when she wasn’t pitching, was a first baseman, with a .321 average. Moving up to the varsity team this year will be Amiee More, a .292 hitter, Shea James and Cheyenne Davis.

“Kelsie Fahnstock played a very good outfield for us last year,” Steffens said. “She also did some pitching for us last season. Some weeks we play four games and it is good to have some kids that can

do some pitching. So Aleshia Reiss will get some starts and hopefully we can find the right combination of kids that can make the routine plays. We need to play good defense and score some runs for whoever is pitching.”

A highlight of any teams’ season is host-ing their own tournament and the Lady Pi-rates have the opportunity to accomplish that on Sept. 15. “We host the tournament to give the girls the chance to play,” stated Steffens. “We have six teams in it.”

SV softball hoping to change perceptions Jared W. [email protected]

St. Vincent’s softball program has not tasted success as much as they would like in the past but are hoping to change the perception, that Lady Indian softball is a viable and competitive program.

After loosing only two seniors from last year’s squad, the Lady Indians return a wealth of experience to this year’s team and hope to keep moving the program in the right direction, proving they are a le-gitimate player in area softball competi-tion.

“Priority number one is playing .500 ball when you haven’t has a lot of suc-cess in the past,” said St. Vincent Coach Dusty Wengert. “They were close last year, the girls are working hard and we feel like we can reach the .500 point this year and compete at a high level.”

The seniors on the team, Jaque-line Richardet, Nicole Pruit, and Kelly Heartling, have taken the initiative to do

their part and bring leadership to every aspect of team preparation, according to their coaches.

“They have the desire and want to got out on a winning note,” said Wengert. “I would like is for them is to be a little bit more vocal as the season progresses.”

Along with assistant coach Chad Un-terreiner, Wengert works with the Lady Indians on the athletic aspects of the game and game knowledge as well, in-corporating strategy preparation in drills on the running game, hitting and fielding work.

“Coach Wengert and I believe that we are all different in our athletic ability but you can control is how aggressive you are and your softball IQ,” said Unter-reiner. “We have a smart team and know our players abilities and will use their strengths to give us the best shot to win.”

Defensively the Lady Indians will position their team based on what lineup gives their team the best opportunity to win games. Whereas most teams prefer

to have one dominant pitcher who looks to come our and take the ball every day, the St. Vincent coaches consider them-selves fortunate to have two experienced pitchers in Pruit and junior Casey Unter-reiner.

“(Both) girls have similar game ex-perience after alternating starts last sea-son, and we are confident both can come in and get the job done, or come in and close a game out,” said coach Unterrein-er. “They are both improving every day and have the ability to give us a chance to win.”

Behind the plate, the Lady Indians re-turn experience in junior Abby Ruessler who has impressed her coaches with her softball IQ and bulldog mentality.

“She has the ability and knowledge to dictate the game and has a strong arm,” said Unterreiner. “I don’t see a lot of people running on us because of how she executes behind the plate.”

Offensively St. Vincent is going to manufacture and produce runs. Richard-

et and Ruessler have stood out with their bats at the plate, but St. Vincent will look to their entire lineup to put runs on the scoreboard.

“Everybody has a job in our lineup and its not about one person carrying the team,” said coach Unterreiner. “If the girls do their job, put the ball in play, maybe take that extra base and execute based on their spot in the lineup we can manufacture runs.”

St. Vincent lost five games by one run last year and hope to turn those scores around this year in preparation for the district tour-nament at the end of the season. “If we turn the tables around you’re talking about a to-tally different ball team, but we are looking to improve every game,” Unterreiner said.

Saxony has depth for its softball squadBy Bill [email protected]

Tali Beaudean will begin her eighth season as the head coach of the Saxony Lutheran Lady Crusaders and sees one of the keys to a successful season as the team’s depth at several positions.

Over the last two years the Lady Cru-saders have made vast improvements. Two years ago, pitching was a problem, but last year that began to come around. The Lady Crusaders are coming off a 4-16 record.

“Last year we had 12 girls out for soft-ball,” said Lady Crusaders Coach Tali Beaudean. “There was a good mix of 12 girls that worked hard together. We had different levels of ability, plus we have different skill levels in softball skills and athletic ability. We blended and began to find what worked and what didn’t. Dis-tricts came around and I thought we did pretty well. But we still had our faults.

“This year we look to improve on those faults that we have with the minor

lapses on defense. With the errors you can’t just let it bring you down, you have to pick it back up and go from there. We have a large number of girls this year, which is fantastic. We have 21 girls, which is the most softball has ever had. We look forward to JV games to help im-prove abilities as well as varsity for those who have been playing for a while.”

Pitching had been a problem for the Lady Crusaders a couple of years back, but last year seemed to get better. The pitchers last year were freshmen and will return for their sophomore year.

“They have a better understanding of what happens in high school softball,” said Beaudean. “We have junior and se-nior hitters who are smart ball players and have been working hard this summer.

“We have some variety as we have different speeds, different pitches. It is going to be a nice little bullpen,” com-mented Beaudean. “This year we want to be better offensively. Defensively we were coming around last year and weren’t having those 10-run innings.

And we are going to continue not have those, one or two runs to the team if any. Our pitching is going to go out there try-ing to strive not to allow any run.”

On the roster is two back up catchers who are sophomores and share the catch-ing position last season, giving them depth.

Seeing time as pitchers this season will be sophomores Natalie Schlimp-ert, of Perryville, and Ashley Steck, of Jackson. Taking the ball as freshmen are Grace Mirly and Kelli Brunke, both from Jackson.

At shortstop Beaudean is looking at senior Sydney Rapp, plus freshmen Tayla Meyr and Logan Mirly.

Playing third base will be Grace Mirly and Lauren Buerck, who will be the backup. At third and short there will be a lot of interchanges due to their abili-ties. Sloane Johnson and Tayla Tafoya, both freshmen, Madison Spanley a soph-omore, and freshman Logan Meyr well play some second base.

Abby Hadler will play in centerfield instead of catching, where she was effec-

tive last season. Right field and left field are interchange-

able but still up for grabs. Vying for positions are Logan Meyr and Tayla Meyr, as well as junior Harper Johnson, senior Kelsey Ward and a new senior Katelyn Wallace, plus freshmen Macie Wallace.

PHS volleyball currently expects successBy Bill [email protected]

This past spring saw a big change for the Perryville Volleyball Pirates as seven girls exited via graduation. They record-ed the best season in Perryville volley-ball history, finishing 29-4-1. The junior varsity also had a good year, finishing with a record of 17-3.

“We are really going to miss last year’s seniors they meant a lot to the program,” said Lady Pirate Head Coach Dave Mirly. “Three of them did get col-lege scholarships so we did lose a lot of talent. But we don’t talk about last year’s team, as this group wants to make their own statement, wants to make their own mark. They are fired up and I have a great group with a lot of talent in there. They are pretty excited about putting their stamp on this season.”

Last season the Lady Pirates matched almost every goal that they set. They were undefeated at home, Notre Dame Tournament champs for the second

straight year, were the conference champs and won the district by defeating Notre Dame. They lost in the sectional round to Lutheran South.

For this season, the girls have set the same goals. The new banner looks really sharp hanging on the wall in the recently painted gym.

“Hopefully we will get some people come out to check out the gym and stay and watch some volleyball,” Mirly stat-ed. “The banners from last year’s team are awesome and hopefully we can keep

putting more numbers up there.”Natalie Gremaud will return as a se-

nior and will be the team captain. Post season honors really rolled her way as she was named to the first team in All-District, All-Conference, All-Region, All-State, as well as making the KTJJ Dream Team.

“We are looking to her for a lot of leadership and looking for her to do a lot of great things out on the court,” said the Lady Pirates head coach. “But she is by no means the only person that we are looking for out there. We have four start-ers coming back: Kristen Triller, Natalie of course, Lauren Buxton and Ashley Bachmann. They are captains this year and they all played well last year.”

Kristen Triller was All-Conference Honorable Mention. Several of the girls that left also received honors.

Alex Spears, who played the middle last year as a freshman, will return giving Mirly a lot of talent to work with. Prob-ably the biggest challenge is finding the right spots for them. Coming back also

will be Chelsey Hotop, Brooke Moll who saw time on the varsity and JV levels last year, Kaitlyn Ellsworth will return for her senior year, as well as Kaylie Hadler, Angie Hoehn and Becky Barber. Brooke will also be on the varsity squad.

According to Coach Mirly no starting spot is for sure — they all have to play for the spots every week. “The girls know that and keep working hard,” said Mirly.

Over the summer the girls played about 50 games including a trip to Branson for bonding time and volleyball.

“The girls really look forward going to Branson,” stated Mirly. ”We go down there to play volleyball which is one of the things we go down there to do. We also go down there to get to know each other a little bit better, spend some quality time with each other and we were able to do all of those things and had a lot of fun. And when we stepped on the volleyball court were able to play some high compe-tition volleyball.”

The conference is really loaded this year, meaning the girls will have to be at the top of their game. Festus is a very good team, Windsor is very good again and De Soto will be exceptionally good this year.

“We are definitely in the mix and Hill-sboro is right there,” said Mirly. “It may

be a four-team race with Hillsboro lurking right there if one of us stumbles. Hillsboro could capture something also.

Coaching the junior will be Dani Yam-nitz, while Sierra Etzold will coach the freshmen.

After finishing last season 20-16 and loosing only three seniors, the St. Vin-cent Lady Indians volleyball team has high expectations going in to 2012.

“We were extremely pleased to hit the 20-win mark and it was a good standard to set for this season,” said St. Vincent coach Tim Haffner. “Last year we fin-ished second in districts but are looking to improve upon that this season.”

Led by seniors Monika Smith, Holly Cissell, Miranda Unterreiner and Dani-elle Naeger, the Lady Indians return a strong core from last year’s squad. How-ever, with eight of the varsity’s 14 play-ers being underclassmen, St. Vincent is a relatively young squad.

Haffner has had success with under-classmen helping his varsity team in the past. “Last season Katie Taylor and Katie Mattingly were young but stepped up in a big way and I’m looking for them to help the seniors lead us this season.”

As part of the youth movement, the Lady Indians will be breaking in a new setter this season, with Kellie L’Hote and Kylie Baer, two sophomores, competing for the spot.

“The setter is the quarterback of the team, so it’s a big role for a young player to fill,” Haffner said. “Both are capable of (filling the role) and will be learning and progressing as the season goes.”

As the new setters settle in they will be feeding the ball to a strong group of hitters and running a team with a lot of

offensive weapons. Monika Smith, last year’s kill leader, returns in the middle, and will be looked to when the Lady In-dians need a big play.

“We have a number of options but Monika is one of our strongest players in clutch situations,” said Haffner.

Defensively, Haffner is instilling a never say die defensive mentality in his team, sighting his teams potential to frus-trate opposing teams. Two players the coach expects to play a big part in sta-bilizing the defense are seniors Miranda Unterreiner and Holly Cissell. “Holly has stepped up and developed into an all around player and Miranda will see a lot of court time and do some work for us in the labero spot, they both bring a lot to the team.”

With a number of underclassmen playing up, Haffner said if they are not going to start on varsity, they will see a lot of time on JV and freshmen teams.

“We have an extremely talented fresh-man class and group of sophomores,” said Haffner. “We have solid players

at every position and they have the tal-ent. Our only concern is many of them will practice with the varsity day to day and they will have to develop their team chemistry as the season progresses.”

Team chemistry is one of the hardest qualities to gauge of a team going into a season and something the St. Vincent coaching staff has been working to de-velop every day.

“The girls are coming together as a team and realizing that team success, not just one or two individual players success that matters,” said Haffner. “If the girls to stay positive and work together, as a team, they will improve as the season moves on and have a great season.

“Danielle Neager is an integral part of our team and has the potential to be a dif-ference maker for us because of her posi-tive attitude,” said Haffner. “She’s loud, has a lot of energy, pushes everyone and is the emotional leader on the team.”

The Lady Indians have high expecta-tions, they are eyeing a district champion-ship, moving through sectionals and giv-ing themselves a chance to compete for a state title.

“We are going to surprise some teams. St. Vincent traditionally has a good team but we have the ability to be better than most teams expect us to be,” said Haffner. “That will be a strength early on but I ex-pect that’s going to wear away quickly.”

Saxony volleyball has a new assistant coachBy Bill [email protected]

Samantha Babcock was a member of the Saxony Lady Crusader volleyball team last year, but she did not get to play the entire season due illness. This year she is the new assistant coach working for Saxony Head Coach Alissa Ernst.

“We are just a happy as can be that (Babcock) is going to be the JV and freshman coach,” commented Ernst. “She has been a tremendous help. She has been absolutely amazing.”

Ernst and her girls are ready to get thing underway.

“You bet they are,” said Ernst. “They have been working hard throughout the summer and it zoomed by just like nor-mal. But we did a couple extra camps and they are working hard on the pre-season. So we are excited on this upcom-ing season.”

Most of the girls are back from last year, giving the coach a good nucleus to work with.

“We have a total of 14 on the varsity

and we actually we have two freshman that will be on the team also,” said Ernst. “We have a great team as we have four starting seniors and two starting juniors and one starting sophomore, which will be our libero.”

Abby Bergman, who played freshman ball last year, as well as seeing time on the JV team, will be the libero.

Coming back on the varsity are Courtney Bergman, Jordan Hoff, Lauren Hecht, Kirsti Pohlman, Kristy Winter, Allyson Bock, Natalie Mueller and Abby Bergman.

Some of the big hitters up front will be seniors Lauren Hecht, Jordan Hoff and Courtney Bergman. There are a total of six seniors at the varsity level.

“Now along with that is Natalie Mueller, who is another good and very consistent hitter for us and very strong,” said Ernst.

“Our key is going to be to play as consistent as we can and keep our team healthy,” stated Ernst.

“The last two years we have had strong team members and our health just went downhill. And it shows on our record. When you have to continue to make changes in the lineup it changes your outcome.”

The fan base of the Saxony Lady Cru-saders has been excellent.

“We have been very lucky in that sense that our parents are very good coming to all the games they can and being supportive,” stated Ernst. “Even around town there is a lot of people that support Saxony. It is a very well sup-ported school and we work to try to keep that support.”

As St. Vincent’s cross country team ventures into its second season, their in-augural season successes are the motiva-tion for this year’s team.

“We finished third at our district meet last year, well ahead of some teams who have had a lot more experience,” said Indi-ans coach Terry Wood. “We qualified three individual athletes to the state meet and that left the team with a desire for success.”

This year’s young team, with nine under-classmen, is led by seniors Jon Meinhardt, Alex Midget, Ashley Gremaud and junior Alex Lipe, but leadership is a quality Wood is confident all his student athletes possess, and he works to foster that potential.

“I look mostly to the seniors on the team to help with conditioning and moti-vation as they know what to expect from those they work with,” Wood said. “(But) I look at all my student-athletes as lead-ers both in cross country and in the class-

room.”“They are an accomplished and driven

set of students and each holds potential for leadership.”

Most cross country meets are 1.5 to 3.125 miles, or 5 kilometers, in length and cover a variety of terrains. In preparation for the season, a typical practice for the Indians includes two and a half to three hours of running every day, working on various strategies for attacking pieces of courses the runners might encounter.

“Every athlete is different and they cannot be trained the exact same way. What works well for one, isn’t going to be the best for the rest,” said Wood. “How I train this group is a trade secret but we will take a 20 percent approach and back our training to prepare for districts and another 20-30 percent before state.”

The Indians have added a few more aggressive and challenging meets to their schedule this season, and look to build upon the foundation that was laid over the past year. According to Wood and assis-

tant coach Chris Wengert, the team put a lot of effort into their summer train-ing program and those efforts are pay-ing dividends with the progress they are making from last season.

“Having a track program allowed for some of the runners to realize how tal-ented they actually are and introduced more speed into their training that they may not have had otherwise,” said Wood.

Wood is excited to get his team into competition and is inspired by the work they have committed themselves to, specifically sophomore Charles Nen-ninger. “The continued work and effort he has put into practice has become a driving force for me and an inspiration for the team.”

“We are expecting big things from our returning varsity boys and our freshman crew is a talented, hardwork-ing group of kids,” Wood said. “Ash-ley Gremaud and Clare Johnson make up our girls team and look for both of them to really well.”

The Indians have already held the St. Vincent Cross Country Invitational and travel to compete in the Jackson Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 1.

Saxony Lutheran Cross Country has plenty of experienceBy Bill Cairns [email protected]

Saxony Lutheran Cross Country will return four seniors, a junior and two soph-omores on the boys’ side. For the girls re-turning are four seniors, two juniors, and two sophomores.

Coach Larry Cleair started the boys cross country program in 2003, the year before they entered their present high school location. He began the girl’s cross country program in 2004.

“Through graduation we lost some great talent. San Briete for the boys who was a two time state qualifier,” said Cleair. “Then on the girl’s side we lost Sarah

Winningham, who graduated, and Grace Hanebrink to a knee injury and surgery, both were in the top seven.”

Coming back this year are seniors Brandon Fritsche, Anthony Etzold, Zach Vogel and Jason Krueger. The only ju-nior on the boys’ team is Aaron Koehler. Sophomores returning are Josh Vogel, and Sam Unger who was out for track.

On the girl’s side will be seniors Mela-nie Dippold, Rachael Gruenwald, Regan Obermann and Dakota Werner. Return-ing as juniors are Breanne Etzold and Ale Wahlers. Two sophomores round out the girl’s team, Kristen Gruenwald and Wall-hausen.

“With the experienced upperclassmen

we have on both girl’s and boy’s teams we should know what it takes to prepare for a competitive season,” stated Cleair. “They are already showing that they understand what is to be accomplished in each work-out and they should show steady improve-ment throughout the season.

The Crusaders and Lady Crusaders will see a lot of different courses during the year with a lot of different schools in attendance, as they both have a tough schedule.

“As most of our meets involve multi-ple schools, every meet presents a unique challenge and opportunity to grow as run-ners,” stated Cleair. “Courses like Notre Dame and the Chaffee Postal Meet em-

phasize speed, while courses like our con-ference course at Cape County Park pro-vide a challenge with their hills.”

Saxony Lutheran has never had a Cross Country Meet at the school, and this year will host a meet at the Jackson City Park.

“We have hosted an annual meet with Chaffee in the Jackson City Park for sev-eral years,” commented Cleair. “We have been the district host in both Class 1 and last year in Class 2. We like the Jackson Park location because it is a known loca-tion used for many district and sectional meets over the years. But we would con-sider a meet on our campus if there was an open spot in our season where several area teams needed to find a local meet.”
