Hobbledown opens in EpsomIf there is one thing to say about Hobbledown it is that it is different from Horton Park Children’s Farm In a word, Better Much better

Where the old buildings were a bit tired around the edges, the Hobbledown team have spent over £2 million upgrading the buildings; adding new ones and making sure everything is clean and it all works

Most important, however, is that the new attraction on the old site is much more fun Fun for adults as well as children The website says 2–13 year olds will get the best from Hobbledown, but this 50-something adult loved it

Yes, the daily entrance fee is a tad more expensive, at £12 50 per child at peak times, but that reduces off peak There’s so much more to do that the annual family pass (5 people) seems like quite a bargain at £312

Epsom doctor supports Wiggo’s call for helmet lawDr Ruth Charlton, joint medical director and consultant paediatrician at Epsom, Sutton and St Helier hospitals is supporting the gold medallist and Tour de France winner, Bradley Wiggins, in calling for a new law to make it mandatory for cyclists to wear a helmet

Having treated many badly injured cyclists, including children, she said that all too often injuries could have been avoided or considerably reduced if the cyclist had been wearing a correctly fitted helmet

Choosing an after school activityJust because they finished school, it does not mean the learning and fun has to stop.

In this guide, we offer some suggestions for out of school activities. The next 5 pages list classes available in the area.

As the new school year starts, so does the time to choose after-

school activities, but take a quick look and you will find a whole range of classes available, from Scouts to Ballet, from French to Karate How can we know which ones are the best for our child, offer value for money, and critically, which ones they will enjoy

After-school activities definitely offer value to your children

Reports indicate those who participate in after-school programs have better school attendance, higher grades and loftier aspirations They’re less likely to get into trouble and are at lower risk of obesity It is also a great opportunity for children to develop social and leadership skills The benefits are there, but under which classes?

Talk to your child and find out how they feel about the activity, and let them choose at

least one club or activity themselves Help them choose activities that reflect who they are and what they want to learn, don’t impose your preferences Explain that it’s important and fun to try new things, and remember switching activities is normal amongst children

Always check out the quality of an activity Discipline-based activities that create a

quality product over a period of time are great, e g putting on a play Don’t think that high cost always means high quality Some activities, like football, are cheaper to run Staff members

should be professionals with skills and experience

Consider the mix of activities The benefits of exercise are huge, so including a sport

would be a good start Extracurricular activities are ideal for children to explore and practice what it means to be a group leader, e g Brownies If you are stuck between two similar activities, consider the usefulness, e g drum lessons might be cool, but the guitar might have wider applicability

Finally, remember logistics The after school programme affects you too Avoid signing on

to too many activities that leave you scrambling from one to the next No one will have fun doing anything if it means arriving late, leaving early, and going without dinner on Tuesdays and Thursdays Look hard for places in walking distance It reduces your carbon footprint while keeping you fit for free Finally, do build in some

downtime Children need to have independent play as well as the structured activities, so ensure time is built in for dinner, watching TV and relaxing Maybe leave some activities for the summer, when different interests can be tried, without the pressure of school demands

After-school activities can provide enrichment, adventure and

variety They can enhance knowledge and build character Spend a bit more time choosing the right activity programme for your child and you will reap the benefits

If your child has special needs, consider your child’s interests,

rather than their needs Many regular activities can use technology or planning to help their participation, e g drama, athletics, cooking

Evaluate your child’s stamina Check they have the energy for an extracurricular activity

Talk with the activity leaders about your child’s unique medical and communication

needs Provide them with emergency contact information

Make sure family downtime is a regular part of the schedule Sometimes your family

needs to have nothing to do — as a group

Remember the inclusion of children with special needs is beneficial to all The special

needs children achieve more, improve their behaviour, and enhance motivation Others learn from working cooperatively and grow in confidence through helping others

Q What does Croydon High offer to parents (and the girls)?

A It’s an exciting and happy place to learn Parents tell me they want their girls to be

happy, which they are, to be challenged in lessons, which they are, and to experience as broad a curriculum as possible, and we certainly provide this Being part of a school where the girls can stay until they are eighteen is a reason

for many parents wanting their daughters to come here In leafy Selsdon, we are fortunate to have 13 acres of land for the girls to enjoy sport and to play By sending their daughters here, parents recognise our commitment to educating the whole child — intellectually, emotionally, spiritually and physically

Q What is the busiest time for you?

A One never knows how busy a day will be until it is happening, and that is the fun of

being in my position As well as the day to day learning in the classroom, there is barely a day when at least one class does not have a workshop or some extraordinary activity I always think the next term will be less busy but it never is, and actually, since everything we do is to improve the learning experience for the girls, I would worry if I was not always busy

Q How can parents get the best from your school?

A Parents will get the best from us by being as much a part of their daughter’s education as

possible Supporting the school ethos of taking opportunities and having a go at everything is very helpful, along with helping the girls to be independent and take responsibility for their belongings and actions

Q What is planned for the coming months?

A During the summer holidays a great deal of building work will be completed A smart

new entrance to the Junior School will greet the children and their parents in September and the stunning Resource Centre being created at the centre of the school will incorporate the old library and ICT suite

Q What do you do for lunch?

A Lunch time is a good time for me to chat informally to the girls and staff, either over a

good lunch or around the school I may well drop in on the numerous lunchtime clubs that the girls enjoy

Q When the end of term comes, how do you feel?

A I feel pleased with so many aspects of the school that have been particularly successful

this year Delighted with the success that individual children have achieved, the stunning school productions, and sad that our lovely Year 6 girls are moving on–even if it is just across the grass to the Senior School

Q What is your best memory of running the Junior School?

AToo many to mention, but perhaps watching the girls enjoying a fun-run organised by two

enterprising Year 6 girls in aid of a particular charity, and seeing the encouragement all the girls gave to each other and particularly to the younger girls Also, in January, we started ‘Little Ivys’, a weekly session for 0 to 4 year olds and their parents, and it has been lovely to see this new group flourish and enjoy the fantastic facilities of our school too www.croydonhigh.gdst.net/

The transition from Primary to Secondary School is an anxious time for parents During the primary school years, it is fairly easy to support your child at school You will probably know his teacher, other members of staff and parents, as well as being familiar with school policies and routines The thought of losing the control this familiarity offers is as daunting for parents as it is for children and you may well wonder how best to continue to support your child

You may also worry specifically about your child’s ability to cope with the new environment and crucially, whether he or she will make friends

Your anxieties may be eased by adopting strategies that help with the transition Here are some tips and tools which should help you prepare for and manage the early months at secondary school:

Be There. Make sure a parent or trusted carer is available before and after school–to provide food, notice if your child comes in late, listen to their successes and concerns and be aware of subtle changes in mood; someone to empathise and with whom to discuss problems Watch and listen, help out if asked but don’t take over Become an Enabler rather than a Fixer

Support the development of friendships. It is important to older children that they mix socially and establish secure friendships and they need to do this whilst still young enough to turn to you for support when

they make mistakes Gradually they will learn to make informed choices about friends It’s appropriate for this age group to have access to a basic mobile phone and computer but the dangers of social networking should be discussed and boundaries agreed upon

Support organisation and routines. Create “To Do Lists” or “Timetables” for the fridge, agree places to keep bags, kit, and books Label uniform and valuables Establish routines so they can get to school punctually Don’t expect too much too soon, many won’t crack this for years

Understand what homework they have and know when it has been completed and handed in Agree a routine that will help your child to complete and hand in all homework on time, without devoting too much time to one piece and little or nothing to others However, remember it is their homework not yours; help, encourage, motivate but accept their best

Schedule time to relax. Your child may become exhausted by the effort of holding it all together Tears are likely over the most trivial things and they may regress and demand more care Trust that they can cope and make sure there is time for sleep, friends, homework, more sleep, watching TV, playing computer games and yet more sleep Avoid weekend breaks and reduce extra-curricular commitments to the minimum Now is not the time for your child to begin new activities or classes

And lastly, schedule time to relax yourself All will eventually be well

Mind your posture:Out and about with your baby

The third in a series of three articles about how to protect your back from excessive strain before and after your baby is born.

Prams/PushchairsIt is often tempting to select based on brand, colour and aesthetics However, this is an important purchase for you and your partner, so taking time to assess the choices and finding the one that will best suit both you and your partner’s needs is important

A pushchair or pram with adjustable height settings is ideal, as it can be moved to suit your own height and that of anyone else who will be pushing it You should be able to walk upright with a straight spine and hands resting at a comfortable height

A pram or pushchair must be one that is easy for you to put up and collapse Try them out to check Some on the market claim to be able to be done with one hand but you don’t want the mechanism to be too stiff or complicated to work or require you to press down hard with one foot at the back, as this is not good for your back Some come apart into sections and, although this takes slightly longer to put in the car, it can be much better on the back as each piece will be much lighter Importantly, assess your own needs and choose accordingly

Check you can safely carry it once collapsed; some people find that once a pushchair collapses down, it becomes more difficult to manoeuvre

There are instances where people feel they benefit the most from having more than one pushchair, each to suit different circumstances (lighter model with ‘car seat’ which enables easier transfer into the car, for example) If this is the case, the same care should be used when selecting all options

Carrying babies Carrying your baby as close as possible to your centre of gravity is preferable–across your back or front is best A carrier/sling or papoose is a good option

Select a carrier that ‘criss-crosses’ at the back, so baby’s weight is distributed more evenly Make sure you read the instructions that come with

the product to ensure that you are using it correctly

If carrying your baby without a sling or carrier, keep the baby’s weight close to your body and to your hip, with your spine straight, Swap sides regularly

Carrying toddlers As your baby grows, lifting and carrying gets more difficult For carrying a long way, a backpack carrier is best as it distributes the weight evenly across your back Make sure you have the shoulder straps firmly tightened and click the waist strap into place There are carriers that take the weight onto the hips, but make sure you use them with your spine straight

Encouraging toddlers to do as much as possible for themselves, as appropriate, such as getting into the car seat, will save your back a lot of stress

In the car When putting your baby into the car, hold the baby close to you as you move towards the vehicle Keep your back straight and only bend your knees when you have got as close to the car seat as possible Only at this stage should you reach out to put the baby in the seat If you’re carrying the baby in a chair, rest the chair on the edge of the car seat, then manoeuvre it into position within the car, keeping your knees bent and back straight

Don’t try to reach out too early and avoid bending from the waist

General Posture Advice The fitter you are and the more muscle tone you have the less likely you are to injure yourself Talk to your chiropractor, GP or other healthcare provider for advice on exercises to develop your core strength

Parents of babies and children inevitably carry heavy bags Using a rucksack style bag is best as you can spread the weight evenly across your back Check the straps are tightened so that the load is held against your back

Avoid high heels and wear comfortable, supportive shoes

If you have children already, it can be difficult if they need lifting and carrying Always lift with your spine straight and bend knees to avoid leaning, stretching or bending

Simple activities such as stretching and shoulder shrugging can all help to keep your back in line

Do not sit for prolonged periods, take a regular break and, when sitting, let the seat take your weight and, if possible, keep as much of your body as possible in contact with the chair so that your whole body is supported Knees should be lower than your hips
