I.
BRIGHT SPOTS AND SHADOWS FORTHE FAMILY TODAY
In the first section, the encyclical
addresses the need to take up thequestion of marriage in the light of theChurch’s teaching, especially as our contemporary culture poses so many
difficult questions to the modernChristian — questions that have notappeared before in history.

FAMILIARIS CONSORTIO
I. Married love, when considered from
the perspective of God’s revelation,
discloses to us the very depths of
what it means to be a man or woman.Family and conjugal love, which gives
rise to family, discloses to us the very
character of what it means to be ahuman being, created in the image
and likeness of God.

FAMILIARIS CONSORTIO
I. The Need To Understand the Situation“Since God's plan for marriage and the family touches men and
women in the concreteness of their daily existence in specificsocial
and cultural situations, the Church ought to apply herself to
understanding the situations within which marriage and thefamily are
lived today, in order to fulfill her task of serving.”
Evangelical Discernment
The Church does not accomplish this discernment only
through the Pastors, who teach in the name and with the
power of Christ but also through the laity: Christ "made them His
witnesses and gave them understanding of the faith and thegrace of
speech (cf. Acts 2:17-18; Rv. 19:10), so that the power of the
Gospelmi ht shine forth in their dail social and famil life."

II.THE PLAN OF GOD FOR MARRIAGE AND
THE FAMILY
In parts two and three of the encyclical, theHoly Father develops his original thinking on
this point. the love between the man and woman
reveals the “total gift of self,” the completeand embodied offering of one’s self to
another that lies at the heart of our vocationas human beings. “God created man in Hisown image and likeness,” the Holy Father comments, “calling him to existence
through love; he called him at the same”

II. For this reason, the institution of
marriage “is not an undue interference
by society or authority, nor the
extrinsic imposition of a form. Rather itis an interior requirement of the
covenant of conjugal love which is
publicly affirmed as unique andexclusive, in order to live in complete
fidelity to the plan of God, the
Creator.”
