Welcome to the summer edition of Families

magazine. No I haven’t taken to dressing up as Marie de Guise, though I wouldn’t mind a shot in one of her dresses. This shot was actually taken on a Families day out at Stirling Castle. In May, a group comprising all the Scottish editors of Families and our children, were lucky enough to get a sneak preview of the newly renovated Royal Palace. We were given a tour of the six royal apartments which were built within the castle walls by James V. The renovation takes the rooms back to how they may have looked in the 1540s when they were home to Mary of Guise, and her infant daughter Mary Queen of Scots. We had a fantastic day out and the kids loved the

tour and appreciated being shown round by the Queen herself and let into Royal secrets by her consorts. We also enjoyed tea and scones from the fabuluous Unicorn Cafe and the stunning views from the ramparts.

Stirling Castle is just one of a whole host of days out that we have put together to see you and your children through the long summer break. Added to this we have advice on choosing the right childcare and getting that all important first school uniform for Primary ones.

Let us know what you think. Feedback to [email protected]. Susan Kirkwood, Editor

Hopetoun, Scotland’s finest stately home situated on the outskirts of Edinburgh, is extending the availability of produce reared on its

farms and estate with the launch of its new Farm Shop which opened this summer.

The Farm Shop housed in a purpose-built destination adjacent to New Hopetoun Gardens stocks more than 100 food and drink signature brands in addition to a butcher, bakery and greengrocer offering. A large cookery theatre will also facilitate demonstrations.

With a focus on traceability and terroir, its aim is to source over 80% of the product range from within fifty miles of the estate. All of the produce on offer, apart from tea and coffee, will be sourced from Scotland.

Along with meat, game and poultry from the Hopetoun estate, there will also be a select range of quality prepared meals using Hopetoun produce. The range includes Fish Pie, Lasagne Verde, Beef Curry, Shepherds Pie, Lamb Tagine and Beef Meatballs. Hopetoun Farm Shop – near Newton Village on the A904 - will open 8am to 6pm weekdays 9am to 5pm Saturday & 10am to 5pm on Sunday. www.hopetoun.co.uk/farmshop.

The team at the Fife Diet are keen to get more people cooking with locally

sourced and grown raw ingredients. In order to do this they are holding workshops such as ‘Family Fruit’, ‘Make it Local and for Kids’ and ‘Feed 4 on a Fiver’. Each workshop will be held around 4 times all over Fife and are open to everyone and run by food experts. Lisa Farrell, workshop coordinator explained the reason behind the workshops.

‘We would like to see families bonding over fresh and healthy local food, possibly saving some money and supporting the local producers whilst having some fun and meeting like-minded people in their area’. See www.fifediet.co.uk

High on the success of last year’s Spacehop Summer

Reading Challenge comes the 2011 challenge. Called Circus Stars, it owes more to Cirque du Soleil, the new generation of circuses and the performance arts than the old-fashioned Big Top circus.

An interactive Circus Stars (www.circus-stars.org.uk) website links children with top authors and illustrators, and gives them space to talk about their favourite books and to share reading ideas.

The Summer Reading Challenge was an immensely popular and successful reading initiative. In Fife last year, over 2,000 children signed up to take part and borrowed a staggering 6,500 books!

The Challenge to children is

simple. They’re encouraged to read six or more books of their choice during the holidays with collectable prizes and rewards, plus a certificate and medal for every child who completes. Children can sign up at their local library as the summer term draws to a close.

Children who sign up in the first two weeks of the scheme are entered into a draw to win a unicycle and all children who complete are entered into a draw to win an author visit for their school.

Alongside the scheme, Fife Libraries will be offering craft and story activities throughout the summer and some will even have marvellous magic shows with professional magicians and circus workshops too! Info [email protected]

local mum Sandra Logan set up Charlys Parlour at the end of 2009 whilst pregnant

with her second child. We asked her why she set up this online shop from her home in Fife and found out what’s on offer.Q. Why did you set up Charlys Parlour?A. I set up Charlys Parlour to provide mums with slings to carry their little ones at an affordable price.Q. What sort of items do you stock?A. I stock Calin Bleu Slings in various colours, material and sizes. I also stock birth pools, Little Lamb nappies and sell clothes from premature sizes to toddler items.Q. Where did the name Charlys Parlour come from?A. Well, my daughter’s nickname is Charly

and the parlour is where I do all my internet shopping so this just sounded right to me. Like a lot of mums, I also wanted to spend more time with my children, hence the decision to find a job that I could do from home. Q. What makes you different from other shops ?A. I sell affordable, quality products and provide a personal service to my customers. Its good to engage with who you are buying from. I have tried and tested [or at least my children have!] everything I sell on the website. I can therefore endorse and recommend these items. urbancuckoo.co.uk is a brand new destination website which

launched in June by Edinburgh businesswoman Jennifer Wilson. Jennifer’s main aim is to solve people’s gift dilemmas. She told Families ‘we wanted to provide shoppers with products that are a bit more unique than those that they can find on the high street and if we can do this we’ll be delighted.’

She hopes to do this by stocking modern, design-led products that are the best of what is out there in terms of style, originality and functionality. Some, like the ‘Posh Pigeon’ cushion from Sixes and Sevens are fun, others

like the Polar Ice Bucket from Cubic are quirky, and others like the fantastic prints are extremely stylish and cool. The focus of this site is beautiful and useful. Every item is delivered beautifully wrapped for dispatch to the lucky recipients, ideal for time pressed,

stylish mums. The early bird catches the worm! Urban Cuckoo is offering readers with the Families Fife region postcodes 10% off all orders placed in July. Use code FF10 when prompted at checkout. To visit the site go to www.urbancuckoo.co.uk

Education and Childcare

Many of us assume that if we need temporary short term childcare,

our only option is family or friends. This always presents a quandary because if you are not paying them, you don’t feel that you can ask too much. Sunnyside Childcare is a registered childcare/nanny agency that actually specialise in finding temporary and permanent childcare for parents and families. They can find you a full time or part time nanny, or an emergency child carer at short notice to cover sickness or holidays. They also provide babysitters to look after your loved ones so that you can attend that special event or occasion you thought you’d have to miss.

Sunnyside Childcare is a small, local company, based in Kinross who pride themselves in having a top quality, child focused workforce who can identify and fulfil the needs of ever changing family requirements. They understand the need to tailor the childcare to fit busy family life and that family life is never 9-5!

The management has over ten years experience working in childcare management positions and experience of using children’s nurseries and employing nannies. They use a sophisticated selection process to recruit the strongest childcare workers for their bank of staff, strict referencing procedures and provide all staff initial training and opportunities for further training.

As Sunnyside Childcare is a Registered Childcare Provider it accepts childcare vouchers and can be used with existing tax credit systems to assist with the childcare costs. See our advert opposite

Need urgent short term childcare?

We all know children learn best through

play, and at Building Blocks Nursery in Rosyth they’re taking that to the next level with innovative, new learning programmes. The children are involved from beginning to end so they lead the learning. Diversity reigns from volcanoes and dinosaurs to doctors and culture, the challenge that faces Building Blocks’ staff is keeping up with the demands of the little minds that attend their purpose built nursery.

The nursery has a large

garden, which creates a wonderful learning environment for the children and gives the opportunity for the learning to continue. From planting and growing vegetables to making snacks, learning about the changing seasons and giving the children a place to develop their physical skills, the nursery also takes advantage of the local woodland area to engage the pre-school children in Forest Kindergarten. The children taking part in this innovative programme

show greater ability to focus on tasks, develop better listening skills along with appreciation and respect for their surroundings.

Catering for children from 0 to 5 years they guarantee that through the innovative learning programmes each child goes home happy, fulfilled and with the valuable skills needed to give them the best possible start in life! Organising childcare can be a bit like going to the dentist – something many people

approach with a sense of dread. Thankfully, there is a new nanny agency Prestige Nannies, whose ethos is all about making this process as pleasant and stress-free as possible. Set up by mother of one, Clair Bairstow, Clair knows firsthand how challenging it can be. This she explains, is why she set up Prestige Nannies. “All our nannies and babysitters are qualified and/or highly experienced child care professionals.” We interview all prospective nannies and provide a reference checking service, ID, qualifications and disclosure checks as standard.Reasons to consider choosing a nanny:There are many advantages of employing a nanny, including:

Child in their own environment so have ÊÊtheir own toys, books, food etc

Higher degree of control over all aspects of ÊÊyour child’s care

Often offer more flexible hours than some ÊÊother forms of childcare.

They can also offer evening babysitting ÊÊand extra hours, including overnight care.

Nannies will carry out other duties ÊÊincluding children’s laundry and housework.

Prestige Nannies believe a successful placement is very much about working closely with the family to get your childcare right. Clair says: “Without exception all our nannies and babysitters must express a genuine love of children, as well as crucial qualities such as gentleness, kindness and enthusiasm.” To contact Clair call 01382 58026807510 275845 or go to www.prestigenannies.co.uk

Back to school

Make time for term timestarting school can be an exciting time for

children – and parents! We asked Nicola Stewart from Fife Schoolwear & Uniforms (formerly National Schoolwear Centre) in Kirkcaldy, about suggestions they give to help fledgling school-parents, like ourselves – our daughter starts school in August, in putting together the basics of a uniform.

“In our store, we try to guide parents through the sometimes confusing ‘new world’ of school uniform, whilst sharing in the excitement they’re feeling. Coming to a ‘school shop’ can often help settle little ones who may be concerned about the change from nursery to ‘big school’”.

In June and early July we have more time to spend with parents and help them find the sizes, and styles, which best suit their child. For example, if your son is ‘thinner than average’ – you should consider ‘Slim fit’ trousers – as opposed to ‘adjuster waists’ – as these will fit him better, and there won’t be the baggy extra material around the hips where he doesn’t need it! Conversely, if your daughter is slightly ‘bigger than average’ – she may benefit from ‘Full Fit’ trousers – providing more around the waist and hips, but not in length – so no need to spend time taking up hems to get the size to fit!

How many changes of clothes?ÊÊOur basic suggestion is for polo shirts say that you should have 3 – one in the washing, one on that day, and one ready for tomorrow. This could also be topped up by a shirt or blouse, and tie, on the alternate days. (Teachers often prefer poloshirts on gym days though – so they don’t have to go round doing up 20-odd ties!)

Don’t forget your gym kitÊÊThe gym kit is often overlooked by new P1 parents. Your child is likely to have gym a few times a week, and many schools now ask that they leave their kit in school – in a marked and labelled gym bag. They should have a plain t-shirt with no logo (unless the School provide a uniform version) – and definitely no football strips! – a plain pair of shorts, and a pair of gym shoes. Your child may also be asked to wear gym shoes during the day in class – so it’s worth spending a bit extra to get quality footwear as their feet are still forming.

Name everythingÊÊYou must name everything your child takes or wears to school! Sew-in, iron-on and stick-on labels are all available, and they really are worth investing in. And, they’ll help school staff to return items to children quicker – leaving them more time to get on with the

important business of running the school! And for that all important first day, ÊÊ are

you thinking of sending off your little one in a smart new blazer? The traditional woollen blazer is beautiful, and extremely smart, but could you consider a polyester version at maybe a third of the price?

Don’t leave it too late’!! ÊÊNot only can shops sell out the exact item you had planned to get, but some things, such as gingham summer dresses are seasonal, so get them while they’re there! We also often hear from parents in the shop that they are ‘putting off buying until nearer the time’ as they’re scared their ‘children will grow’. Whilst some will of course, and if they do, we exchange garments for the bigger size within 90 days of purchase - I usually ask them the question – did they really grow that much in the last 6 weeks…?! The answer usually is… ‘No’…!”

Smart feet go to ...Back to school time is incredibly busy at Clever Clogs

in Dunfermline as the rush for school shoes starts. So to avoid the worst of the queues it’s best to book an appointment.

As someone who knows a thing or two about children’s shoes and feet, we asked Pauline from the

shop for some tips. She pointed out that after a summer in sandals and trainers, new school shoes will feel strange.

To get round this make sure your child wears their new shoes for a little while every day over a week or so before school begins

to make sure they're super comfy on the first day of term. She also pointed out that there's no doubt that shoes which are polished, properly dried out and generally well looked after last longer.

Our children love to play and be entertained - the proof

of which is often at the bottom of your purse, especially at this time of the year when they’re gifted six glorious weeks out of school. However, with kids’ rapidly changing desires and often shorter than we would like attention spans, today’s in demand hot toy can be tomorrow’s hallway clutter. Well, here are a few make-it-themselves ideas.

PLAY DOUGH ÊÊ You can buy ready-made play dough from the shops but it will cost you. Make it yourself and the whole thing costs buttons - and you can have heaps of fun making the dough as well as the fun of playing with it afterwards. All you need is 2 cups of flour, 4 tablespoons of ‘cream of tartar’, 2 tablespoons of cooking oil, 1 cup of salt, 2 cups of boiling water, and some food colouring. Pop it all in a bowl and mix. Savings = £20

Nicole Diamond is founder of The Jack & Jill Market, the quality nearly-new baby & children’s market where Smart Mums Sell and Save. See Out and About for next markets near you

HARRY POTTER WANDÊÊ Of course, you know what the real magic is don’t you? That’s right, it’s charging £35 for a plastic stick! So if you make three of your own for three different little wizards, you’ve saved £100 - and that’s magic too. Wands made of rolled-up paper may not light up when waved but you can guarantee they’ll soon get bored of that trick anyway. Roll up coloured sheets of paper tightly, glue, paint, and sprinkle with gold glitter glue – this will save you many pounds and give you and your kids hours of fun. Savings per wand = £35

TWISTERÊÊ The toy phenomena of the 20th Century, it’s twisty turny fun appeals to many children (and adults) and you may at some point find yourself being begged to buy it. However, grab some tape and stick various shapes on to the floor. Then call out the instructions: “put your

left foot in a circle”; “place your right elbow in a triangle”. Plenty of squeals and delight to be had for a fraction of the price – and a bit of ‘know your shapes’ education thrown in for good measure. Savings =£13

TEN-PIN BOWLING ÊÊ Children love this as they’re simply allowed to knock stuff over – fun! Grab 10 of your empty water, juice, or soda bottles, partly fill with rice grains or beans, and voila: a ten-pin bowling set. The first to strike out – wins! Savings = £40

CATCH BALLÊÊ Raid your laundry and recycle two plastic detergent jugs with handles (courtesy of many fabric softeners). Cut them in half - keeping the handle ends - and tape the edges to smooth them off. Look round the house for a tennis ball or a pair of rolled up socks, and your kids have all they need for hours of catch ball fun - that is until they get bored and move on to the next great thing. Savings =£10

LIMBOÊÊ How low can you go! About £2.50 lower - actually. And as someone once said: every little helps! No need to fork out on a limbo stick when some ribbon tied between two

chairs or the kitchen broom will do the trick. However, you might want to splash out on the dulcet tones of Chubby Checker’s Limbo Rock to really get the party started. Savings =£2.50

VOLLEYBALLÊÊ “Mum, can we play outside?” “No, it’s raining”. “Boo”. “But you can play indoor beach volleyball.” “Yay!” No need to splash out on expensive volleyball sets all the time. Simply tie some sturdy string or clothes line between two chairs, hang an old hang sheet over it, blow-up the impulse beach ball purchase from last year’s holiday – or a balloon, split into teams, and your kids are all set for the Rainy Day Volleyball Championships. Savings = £60

FOOTBALLÊÊ “Mum, can we play outside?” “No, it’s STILL raining”. “Boo”. “But you can now play indoor football.” “Yay!” And when the novelty of beach volleyball has worn off, the aforementioned volleyball net transforms into a football goal - time to bend it like Beckham! Savings=£25 The Smart Money Mum is a trademark of The Jack & Jill Market.

summer is the

time to boost your vitamin D levels so that you have enough to see you through the winter months. To optimise the synthesis of vitamin D in the skin you want to allow about half an hour of sun exposure to as much as the body as possible, preferably under the stronger midday sun and then screen up. I know this goes against the grain of many conventional recommendations as we are always being told to avoid the midday sun, but the best sunshine to get vitamin D is when it is directly overhead in the sky. Of course you are not going to expose your new born to strong sunshine but for younger kids a little bit of sunshine will do them no harm and in fact may do them a lot of good. Once you have had your allocated sun exposure then apply a mineral sunscreen which will start working straight away and protect against both UVB and UVA rays.

Families adds: Remember after ÊÊa short period of unprotected exposure, you should cover up or put on sunscreen to avoid sunburn. You can get plenty of vitamin D from the diet too, by eating vitamin D rich foods.

This month Lynora Kennedy looks at the benefits Manual Lymphatic Drainage in pregnancy

Many mums-to-be experience swollen ankles during their pregnancy. Although sometimes an indication of pre-eclampsia, a certain amount of swelling [oedema] is normal during pregnancy, as the body naturally retains more water.

Tips such as putting your feet up and taking it easy can help too, but busy modern-day mums often don’t have time to heed this advice and needlessly put up with this uncomfortable and unattractive condition,

which largely affects women in the third trimester.Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a very gentle, light touch massage that improves the efficiency of the lymphatic system – the body’s waste disposal system. Specific and gentle movements of the skin stimulate and increase the rate of removal of waste products, tissue waste and excess fluid from the body’s tissues resulting in reduced fluid retention, swelling and puffiness of the ankles. What to expect The first visit to a trained MLD practitioner will include a consultation. At an MLD session, which lasts an hour, you will be asked

to remove some of your clothing and lie down on the treatment bed where you will be covered to keep you warm. It is a very relaxing experience and as no oils or powders are used it is safe even for those with sensitive skin. Are there any side effects to the treatment? There are usually no bad side effects and it is perfectly safe to eat before and after a MLD treatment. It helps to drink some water after your treatment and you may need to go to the toilet more often, as the re-energised lymphatic system starts to recycle excess fluid and waste. After an MLD treatment, you should feel more relaxed and clear headed!

Better beginnings with the Synergy Centre

Lynora Kennedy is a fully qualified Vodder MLD and Lymphoedema Therapist. She has worked as a massage therapist for more than 30 years in England, USA, Belgium and now full time in Scotland. PROUDEST ECO FRIENDLY MOMENT:Recycling all food waste and cardboard and glass at work and having good systems in place. At home I am working on it.

Drama is... a good ideaThe Helen O’Grady Drama Academy

is entering its 16th year offering a fun and integrated programme of self development to the children of Fife, Perth and Kinross.

Founded over 30 years ago in Australia, the Academy now offers classes in 42 different countries, and its highly acclaimed programme is affordable, available and accessible to every child.

Classes are held weekly in halls and community centres throughout the region and are divided into three age groups. Lessons are fast moving and fun, and highly developed to encourage maximum participation, develop high self esteem and promote clear, effective communication skills.

The hour’s lesson involves each child in the spark of an idea which is then developed, nurtured and expanded - eventually growing to a play in which every child has a part to play.

Imagination is a hugely important

part of a child’s development whether they are studying the Arts or investigating science, maths or technology: through Drama the children can understand how there may be many means towards an end, and discussion and collaboration lead to a satisfactory conclusion.

Every teacher in the Academy is highly qualified and trained: energetic, dynamic and exciting classes ensure a stimulating experience for every child. For more information about places and times, please ring Barbara on 01382 330052.
