Welcome to the summer edition of Families

magazine. No I haven’t taken to dressing up as Marie de Guise, though I wouldn’t mind a shot in one of her dresses. This shot was actually taken on a Families day out at Stirling Castle. In May, a group comprising all the Scottish editors of Families and our children, were lucky enough to get a sneak preview of the newly renovated Royal Palace. We were given a tour of the six royal apartments which were built within the castle walls by James V. The renovation takes the rooms back to how they may have looked in the 1540s when they were home to Mary of Guise, and her infant daughter Mary Queen of Scots. We had a fantastic day out and the kids loved the

tour and appreciated being shown round by the Queen herself and let into Royal secrets by her consorts. We also enjoyed tea and scones from the fabuluous Unicorn Cafe and the stunning views from the ramparts.

Stirling Castle is just one of a whole host of days out that we have put together to see you and your children through the long summer break. Added to this we have advice on choosing the right childcare and getting that all important first school uniform for Primary ones.

Hopetoun, Scotland’s finest stately home situated on the outskirts of Edinburgh, is extending the availability of produce reared on its

farms and estate with the launch of its new Farm Shop which opened this summer.

The Farm Shop housed in a purpose-built destination adjacent to New Hopetoun Gardens stocks more than 100 food and drink signature brands in addition to a butcher, bakery and greengrocer offering. A large cookery theatre will also facilitate demonstrations.

With a focus on traceability and terroir, its aim is to source over 80% of the product range from within fifty miles of the estate. All of the produce on offer, apart from tea and coffee, will be sourced from Scotland.

Along with meat, game and poultry from the Hopetoun estate, there will also be a select range of quality prepared meals using Hopetoun produce. The range includes Fish Pie, Lasagne Verde, Beef Curry, Shepherds Pie, Lamb Tagine and Beef Meatballs. The team at the Fife Diet are keen to get more people cooking with locally

sourced and grown raw ingredients. In order to do this they are holding workshops such as ‘Family Fruit’, ‘Make it Local and for Kids’ and ‘Feed 4 on a Fiver’. Each workshop will be held around 4 times all over Fife and are open to everyone and run by food experts. Lisa Farrell, workshop coordinator explained the reason behind the workshops.

News: Who, What, Where, When …

High on the success of last year’s Spacehop Summer

Reading Challenge comes the 2011 challenge. Called Circus Stars, it owes more to Cirque du Soleil, the new generation of circuses and the performance arts than the old-fashioned Big Top circus.

An interactive Circus Stars (www.circus-stars.org.uk) website links children with top authors and illustrators, and gives them space to talk about their favourite books and to share reading ideas.

The Summer Reading Challenge was an immensely popular and successful reading initiative. In Fife last year, over 2,000 children signed up to take part and borrowed a staggering 6,500 books!

The Challenge to children is

simple. They’re encouraged to read six or more books of their choice during the holidays with collectable prizes and rewards, plus a certificate and medal for every child who completes. Children can sign up at their local library as the summer term draws to a close.

Children who sign up in the first two weeks of the scheme are entered into a draw to win a unicycle and all children who complete are entered into a draw to win an author visit for their school.

Alongside the scheme, Fife Libraries will be offering craft and story activities throughout the summer and some will even have marvellous magic shows with professional magicians and circus workshops too! Info [email protected]

Fife Craft Association is celebrating its 25th Anniversary with a special Craft Gala day at the Rothes Halls Glenrothes. Back to school

Make time for term timestarting school can be an exciting time for

children – and parents! We asked Nicola Stewart from Fife Schoolwear & Uniforms (formerly National Schoolwear Centre) in Kirkcaldy, about suggestions they give to help fledgling school-parents, like ourselves – our daughter starts school in August, in putting together the basics of a uniform.

“In our store, we try to guide parents through the sometimes confusing ‘new world’ of school uniform, whilst sharing in the excitement they’re feeling. Coming to a ‘school shop’ can often help settle little ones who may be concerned about the change from nursery to ‘big school’”.

In June and early July we have more time to spend with parents and help them find the sizes, and styles, which best suit their child. For example, if your son is ‘thinner than average’ – you should consider ‘Slim fit’ trousers – as opposed to ‘adjuster waists’ – as these will fit him better, and there won’t be the baggy extra material around the hips where he doesn’t need it! Conversely, if your daughter is slightly ‘bigger than average’ – she may benefit from ‘Full Fit’ trousers – providing more around the waist and hips, but not in length – so no need to spend time taking up hems to get the size to fit!

How many changes of clothes?ÊÊOur basic suggestion is for polo shirts say that you should have 3 – one in the washing, one on that day, and one ready for tomorrow. This could also be topped up by a shirt or blouse, and tie, on the alternate days. (Teachers often prefer poloshirts on gym days though – so they don’t have to go round doing up 20-odd ties!)

Don’t forget your gym kitÊÊThe gym kit is often overlooked by new P1 parents. Your child is likely to have gym a few times a week, and many schools now ask that they leave their kit in school – in a marked and labelled gym bag. They should have a plain t-shirt with no logo (unless the School provide a uniform version) – and definitely no football strips! – a plain pair of shorts, and a pair of gym shoes. Your child may also be asked to wear gym shoes during the day in class – so it’s worth spending a bit extra to get quality footwear as their feet are still forming.

Name everythingÊÊYou must name everything your child takes or wears to school! Sew-in, iron-on and stick-on labels are all available, and they really are worth investing in. And, they’ll help school staff to return items to children quicker – leaving them more time to get on with the

important business of running the school!And for that all important first day, ÊÊ are

you thinking of sending off your little one in a smart new blazer? The traditional woollen blazer is beautiful, and extremely smart, but could you consider a polyester version at maybe a third of the price?

Don’t leave it too late’!! ÊÊNot only can shops sell out the exact item you had planned to get, but some things, such as gingham summer dresses are seasonal, so get them while they’re there! We also often hear from parents in the shop that they are ‘putting off buying until nearer the time’ as they’re scared their ‘children will grow’. Whilst some will of course, and if they do, we exchange garments for the bigger size within 90 days of purchase - I usually ask them the question – did they really grow that much in the last 6 weeks…?! The answer usually is… ‘No’…!”

Smart feet go to ...Back to school time is incredibly busy at Clever Clogs

in Dunfermline as the rush for school shoes starts. So to avoid the worst of the queues it’s best to book an appointment.

As someone who knows a thing or two about children’s shoes and feet, we asked Pauline from the

shop for some tips. She pointed out that after a summer in sandals and trainers, new school shoes will feel strange.

To get round this make sure your child wears their new shoes for a little while every day over a week or so before school begins

to make sure they're super comfy on the first day of term. She also pointed out that there's no doubt that shoes which are polished, properly dried out and generally well looked after last longer.

time to boost your vitamin D levels so that you have enough to see you through the winter months. To optimise the synthesis of vitamin D in the skin you want to allow about half an hour of sun exposure to as much as the body as possible, preferably under the stronger midday sun and then screen up. I know this goes against the grain of many conventional recommendations as we are always being told to avoid the midday sun, but the best sunshine to get vitamin D is when it is directly overhead in the sky. Of course you are not going to expose your new born to strong sunshine but for younger kids a little bit of sunshine will do them no harm and in fact may do them a lot of good. Once you have had your allocated sun exposure then apply a mineral sunscreen which will start working straight away and protect against both UVB and UVA rays.

Families adds: Remember after ÊÊa short period of unprotected exposure, you should cover up or put on sunscreen to avoid sunburn. You can get plenty of vitamin D from the diet too, by eating vitamin D rich foods.

Many mums-to-be experience swollen ankles during their pregnancy. Although sometimes an indication of pre-eclampsia, a certain amount of swelling [oedema] is normal during pregnancy, as the body naturally retains more water.

Tips such as putting your feet up and taking it easy can help too, but busy modern-day mums often don’t have time to heed this advice and needlessly put up with this uncomfortable and unattractive condition,

which largely affects women in the third trimester.Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a very gentle, light touch massage that improves the efficiency of the lymphatic system – the body’s waste disposal system. Specific and gentle movements of the skin stimulate and increase the rate of removal of waste products, tissue waste and excess fluid from the body’s tissues resulting in reduced fluid retention, swelling and puffiness of the ankles.What to expect The first visit to a trained MLD practitioner will include a consultation. At an MLD session, which lasts an hour, you will be asked

to remove some of your clothing and lie down on the treatment bed where you will be covered to keep you warm. It is a very relaxing experience and as no oils or powders are used it is safe even for those with sensitive skin.Are there any side effects to the treatment? There are usually no bad side effects and it is perfectly safe to eat before and after a MLD treatment. It helps to drink some water after your treatment and you may need to go to the toilet more often, as the re-energised lymphatic system starts to recycle excess fluid and waste. After an MLD treatment, you should feel more relaxed and clear headed!
