Gifts Unique To Your Child

Babies Learn Different Aspects Of Language From Mum Or DadMums are more likely to coo to babies and Dads to talk in ‘proper’ language. Both are good for how babies learn language. A team at Washington State University attached microphones to parents and recorded verbal exchanges with kids, using speech recognition software. They believe women’s language promotes bonding, while the more adult speech of Dads gives them a bridge to adult life.

Five Successful Years For Local ‘Mumpreneur’ Local businesswoman, Kate Attwood from Worcester is celebrating her 5th successful year in business as the owner of baby and child swimming company, Puddle Ducks Worcestershire. The Worcestershire franchise opened in August 2010 and it now teaches at ten pools in the local area, bringing its fun and effective swimming and life-preserving classes to many parents and their little ones across the area.

Kate says: “It’s wonderfully rewarding to have reached this milestone, both from a personal and a business perspective. Parents in Worcestershire have been really supportive since our launch, and our customers are extremely loyal, which I believe is simply down to the quality of the teaching programme and the fantastic and highly trained teaching team”.

She adds: “Although fun is at the heart of our classes, they’re about much more than this. Because the classes revolve around bonding and play, the children don’t even realise they’re learning to swim and are acquiring a skill that could save their lives. Life preservation is a structured and integral part of Puddle Ducks’ toddler classes, incorporating saving other people’s lives as well as personal water safety”.

Dear readers

Editor’s Letter

Well, the summer holidays are behind us and the focus is firmly on getting back to school.

This issue has an educational focus. We ask whether we may be pushing our kids too hard. We take a look at some of the extracurricular clubs and classes that are available. And we find out about the benefits of learning to swim.

If your are looking for a school for your child, whether primary or secondary education, then you may be interested in our list of open days for some of the leading independent and free schools in the area.

If you have a new addition to the family on the way then you should read our feature explaining the recent changes to the laws on paternity leave for Dads. Also with a legal theme, we take a look at what you should remember when writing a will.

Next time: our popular Christmas issue!

Parents Left In The Dark Over New Rules Changes in the workplace voucher system has led to confusion among many UK parents. The system has previously allowed working parents to be able to pay childminders with vouchers worth up to £243 per month. Parents could ‘buy’ these with their pre-tax salary. This has meant a saving of up to £930 per family.

From this autumn, however, the scheme will change. Families will now claim a ‘top-up’ payment, which means they can claim support worth 20p for each £1 they spend on child care. Single parents who earn below £150,000 or couples who earn less than £300,000 (£150,000 per partner) can claim, though families with one parent who stays at home are not eligible.

With parents having to work out the rules themselves, some may slip through the loop. The voucher system will remain but the Government has not confirmed if families will have to re-apply.

Paracetamol Use May Harm Male FoetusParacetamol could have an adverse effect on developing male babies. A Professor at the MRC Centre for Reproductive Health at the University of Edinburgh has said that the use of paracetamol for a week or more could lower a baby boy’s testosterone levels while in the womb. Doctors recommend that women should take the lowest possible dose and take it for as short a time as possible. Pain or fever can be serious in pregnancy, so it is best to talk with a GP.

Making a will and appointing guardians and trustees for your children are something to think very carefully about.

By Clare Burden

When you make a will there are many issues to consider. However, if you are a parent of young children then two things are of critical importance.

The first is who will carry out your parental role in your absence. These people are known as Guardians. I would always recommend having two people either to take responsibility at the same time, or one Guardian with another as a substitute, in case the first is not able to take on the role.

Ask yourselves how well does your child know the people you are appointing? How old are they? Where do they live? Could your child’s day to day life carry on? Do your Guardians have the same values as you? What are their financial circumstances? Have you asked them if they are prepared to take on the role if necessary? Some people do say no!

The second is the appointment of Trustees. If you die without leaving a spouse or partner, most people would leave their estate to their children. For obvious reasons young children cannot be expected to run their own finances. Trustees therefore are appointed to protect money for a child’s future - the bulk of which will be given to them at an age of your choosing. The reality is that most of us are worth more dead than alive – and sometimes this pot of money is considerable.

Trustees must be people you have complete faith in. You are putting them in your shoes and they will have access to your children’s money usually with very wide powers to decide what to do with it. You will need two at least. I recommend one of them is one of your Guardians and the other, an independent outsider who can oversee all financial transactions.

Lastly, remember who you appointed. For many of us the people we appointed when our child was very young are not always those who would be appropriate later on. All our circumstances change and we should keep wills up to date.

New rules have completely changed the way parents can take time off after having a baby

By Judy Yorke

New Shared Parental Leave regulations give eligible parents in the UK the flexibility to juggle childcare between them. After a compulsory two weeks off for the mother, parents can share up to 50 weeks of leave in the baby’s first year (or the first year of adoption). The law applies to same sex couples and those bringing up a child together, even from a previous relationship.

Taking it in turnsHow you split the leave is up to you. It will depend on who earns more, who feels their career will be least affected, and who wants to be at home.

Significantly, for the first time, Dads can take the year off while Mums return to work.

The leave can be taken in blocks (up to three each) so you can alternate time off. It’s a big advantage if you don’t want to be away from work for too long. Some Dads might want to return to work in the early months when Mums are breastfeeding.

Sharing the loadOne big advantage is that parents can be off at the same time. Many Mums need their partner’s support in those first magical, exhausting, bewildering weeks and can dread their partner going back to work after a fortnight. Having time off together can

Dad Is In Charge!

benefit families with older children while everyone is getting used to a new member of the family.

Can you afford it?Finances will play an important part in the decision. While you can share up to 50 weeks, only 37 are paid. You will receive £139.58 per week or 90% of your average weekly earnings, whichever is lower. For more information go to https://www.gov.uk/government/topical-events/shared-parental-leave.

FOR AGES 5-7 YEARS

Knight in Training: Dragons Can’t Swim by Vivian French (Hodder £4.99)

ED SAYS: ‘Sam’s ambition is to become a Very Noble Knight but he has no idea how to do this. He and his doodlebird are packed off to Mothscale Castle to stay

with his tiresome cousin Prune and several wild beasts including a little dragon called Godfrey. Godfrey gets stuck down a well and while Sam and Prune try to rescue him Sam makes an amazing discovery which could help him in his quest.

Stitch Head: The Beast of Grubbers Nubbin by Guy Bass (Stripes £5.99)

ED SAYS: ‘Stitch Head is the creation of mad professor Erasmus of Castle Grotteskew. He would like to hide away in the shadows but he must do all he can to keep the castle and its monstrous inhabitants safe. Stitch Head has to contend with a crowd of rioting human children – who are getting very hungry. With Guzzlin’ Day approaching, he and his friend Arabella hope to find food in Grubbers Nubbin but they are thwarted by a terrifying beast.

FOR AGES 7 YEARS PLUS

The Bolds by Julian Clary(Andersen £6.99)

ED SAYS: ‘When the Bolds arrive in West London they are seen to be rather unusual. Perhaps that is because they are not human – they are hyenas! They try to keep this fact a secret, often with very funny consequences.

A visit to the local safari park heralds the start of a new chapter in the Bolds’ lives with their daring rescue of another hyena. But for how long will they be able to keep their secret from their nosy neighbour?

Binny in Secret by Hilary McKay (Hodder £10.99) ED SAYS: ‘The holidays are over and it’s back to school. Binny hates everything about it so when a storm damages their house and they have to move Binny hopes to escape from school – but not for long. When one of the chickens disappears and Binny finds strange footprints she has a mystery to solve. It would be so much easier if she had a friend. Binny’s story is interwoven with a tale of three children in the same area a hundred years ago who have to face the onset of war.

Open Days - Which School To Visit Next? It’s the open day term - the best time to explore your options in the hunt for your child’s next school. Schools come in all shapes and sizes, and league tables, prospectuses, Ofsted reports and SATs results are enough to make most parents’ heads spin. The good news is that thousands of parents have survived the process before - here’s how it’s done.

by Robina Cowan

If you've lived in the area for any length of time, you'll already know where your local schools are; the next step is to find out what they are like behind closed doors.

* Log onto the government website www.direct.gov.uk and type 'find a school' into the search box for lists of local schools, exam results, school profiles and application details.

* Go to www.familiesonline.co.uk for up-to-date open day dates and contact details for schools, plus a wealth of education features.

* Read inspection reports online at www.ofsted.gov.uk (for state schools) and www.isc.co.uk (for independent schools), but be wary of out-of-date reports as things can change very quickly.

* www.findaschool.info lists schools by type, the distance from your home, a snapshot of recent Ofsted gradings, and a link to the local authority admissions team.

* Another useful resource is www.goodschoolsguide.uk, which has authoritative guides to different school types, school listings, and if you are prepared to make the investment, offers an advisory service which can be tailored to your child.

Having whittled down your choices, ask for a prospectus for all the schools you are interested in, plus their admission criteria and an application form: read them, and visit the schools. You wouldn't buy a house without going to see it first, but surprising numbers of parents choose schools without visiting first.

Other parents are useful for a view of local schools. Ask what they think about their child's school's strengths and weaknesses, taking with a pinch of salt any extreme comments which might be based on a specific experience and a tad biased.

Another interesting exercise is passing the schools at the end of the day. Do the pupils look confident and purposeful, are they chatting in groups but still have the grace to let you pass? Or are they pushing each other around, dropping food wrappers and rubbishing their teachers? Could you see your child coming out of this school?

Be wary of reading too much in to league table results - they are useful but provide a statistical snapshot without any 'flesh' or explanation. A school with a challenging intake may be making magnificent strides through committed teaching, yet on paper would compare poorly to a school whose more able children find exams easier.

There's no substitute for visiting your shortlisted schools, asking lots of questions and trusting your gut instinct. Robina Cowan is Editor of Families South East.

Clubs and Classes

Too Much, Too Soon? Are we pushing our kids too far by signing them up to lots of clubs and classes - or offering valuable advantages?

By Sally J. Hall

Most parents agree: kids need to be stimulated and to have plenty going on to stop them getting bored. Mums and Dads are only too aware of the value of after-school clubs to ensure their children are well looked after and stimulated.

But with a vast range on offer, it can be tempting to sign them up for a different activity every evening. Piano on Monday, gymnastic Tuesday, maths Wednesday – and so it goes on, with more over the weekend.

Of course we might not all be able to offer our child such a packed schedule – finances alone might make this impossible – but there’s no doubt that a couple of well-chosen activities can

be great for giving your child an insight into areas that the school curriculum can’t cover.

What age is best to start classes?Early years: They get very tired so keep outside activities to a minimum. For excess energy, a good run in the park is great for letting off steam. An art, singing or baby ballet-type class with the emphasis on play would be great.

Infant school: Add a low-key activity to look forward to. Singing, music making, dancing, simple sports and swimming are all great choices for little ones.

Junior school: As dreaded tests loom, add an educational class if your child is struggling with one subject. Extra maths or reading tuition can make all the difference to confidence.

Senior school: It’s easier to add activities as energy and independence increases. As more exams come up, be flexible about allowing them to miss or drop activities.

What’s on the menu?

Mini MozartMany parents are convinced their child is a musical genius – and they may be right – but pushing a child into playing an instrument can put them off for life! From seven years, a 30 or 45 minute class per week is plenty, with ten minutes of daily practice. This can increase slowly.

Fitness FanaticSports and dance are great for fitness and flexibility and the chance to play with teams from other areas – though for

Music Maestro: A 30 or 45 minutes class is plenty each week.

younger kids, avoid classes that are too aggressive or pressurised. Be prepared for many hours spent track, field or pool-side if your child loves sports.

MastermindIf one subject is a struggle, one-to-one tuition can pay dividends and if your child wants to study a particular subject later on, it can be invaluable.

Mini ThespianKids thrive in acting and singing classes like Stagecoach and Got 2 Sing and may go on to theatre school. It builds confidence and the ability to express themselves.

AlternativesFor every kind of child, there’s an activity to suit, so check the clubs and classes section of the Families website www.familiesonline.co.uk to see what’s near you. From archery to zoology, you’ll find something they love.

What do clubs and classes offer your child?A chance to mix with children from other schools and areas; this will widen your child’s social circle

A chance to take part in artistic, musical and sporting activities not offered at school

The ability to develop persistence and patience.

But – play is important too. Educational Psychologist Peter Gray wrote in The Independent newspaper that we should allow our children more time for playing. He believes that more time in the classroom and less at play can be detrimental, because kids miss out on life skills that can only be learned through play. “Judgement, wisdom and creative ability come from life experiences,” he says. “For children, those experiences are embedded in play.”

Swim To It - The Benefits Of Swimmimg Lessons As an activity that all the family can enjoy together, it is no wonder that swimming is the largest participation sport in the UK. There are lots of benefits to starting a swimming class at an early age, as well as being a fun activity it will also help develop water confidence and vital personal survival skills.

For babies and pre-schoolers it is best to choose a class that is based on their age and developmental stage so that they can learn amongst their peers and you will feel reassured that the activities within the class will be at the right level for them. Classes with smaller numbers of children will allow for more individual attention and can mean that a programme can be tailored to each child. Kate Attwood, Business Owner at Puddle Ducks Worcestershire says: “Swimming is an enjoyable activity which helps them interact with other children and encourages them to lead a healthy lifestyle right from the start”.

You can take your baby for their first swim lesson as soon as they are a couple of weeks old. Swimming at this age is a great way for you both to relax and bond together and often leads to a better night’s sleep too. It’s worth looking out for a swim school that allows you to stay with them through to school age so that they can continue their swimming journey with the same company. Don’t forget as well as being great for the children swimming classes are also a fantastic way to meet other local mums and dads in the area. Puddle Ducks Tel: 01905 888346. Email [email protected].
