New children’s hospital to open late NovemberThe Lady Cilento Children’s Hospital will open its doors and welcome its first patients and families on Saturday, 29 November 2014 with up to 160 inpatients from the Royal Children’s Hospital and the Mater Children’s Hospital transferring to the new hospital on the day.

The new hospital has open, naturally-lit environments; outside views from inpatient areas; a majority of single rooms with ensuites and provision for parents/carers to stay overnight; a family resource centre; a pet-visiting area and several roof-top gardens aim to make a hospital stay as comfortable, stress-free and pleasant as it possibly can be for patients and their families. Having all of Queensland's paediatric services under the one roof will also provide tremendous relief to families of children with complex care needs who might previously have had to move between two hospitals for treatment.

Dawn of a new era for Lourdes Hill College

Lourdes Hill College was in celebration mode recently, with the official blessing and opening of its new facilities, including a state-of-the-art middle school building, chapel and sports centre.

The largest construction project in the Hawthorne school’s

98 year history has been completed to make way for a growing student population and the introduction of a full cohort of Year 7 students in 2015. The new five-storey building, known as the Bernadette Centre, houses a 470 seat auditorium, science precinct and performing arts centre. The building also comprises eight general learning classrooms designed specifically for students in Years 7 to 9, a cashless tuckshop, roof-top play area and administration facilities.

Brisbane teenager, Shani’s Inspirational TourShani, a 14 year old member of the Flipside Circus Performance Troupe recently went on an ‘Aspirations Tour’ in regional Queensland – to Baralaba and Woorabinda. The aim of the trip was to conduct workshops with the school students and give them

a taste of circus as the members of Flipside Circus performed their show ‘CircUS’.

Shani said ‘I had no idea what to really expect. I was so excited to see for myself what life was like for kids living in such remote areas and to me it was a tragedy to see how disadvantaged these extremely talented kids

are. The students of both (schools) had great potential to achieve many things in life but due to their circumstances, may not ever have the opportunity.’

During the trip the Flipside Circus performers had the chance to bond with the students from the regional schools and also their fellow performers and trainers of Flipside Circus, so much so Shani considers them family. She also said ‘This is just the beginning of an extraordinary journey in the world of circus and I am so excited.’ Now that’s a family we’d like to be part of!

Keep your pets cool this summer and help our wildlife! The summer heat is approaching which means scorching temperatures for not only us humans, but for our beloved companions and surrounding wildlife.

Each year the RSPCA receives hundreds of distress calls about animals - mostly dogs - left in cars in the heat. While owners are shopping, running errands, or chatting, their animals are left in an uncomfortable and life threatening situation. Even if parked in the shade with the windows cracked it can still be a killer to dogs. The temperature inside a car in the shade can exceed 40 degrees, while a car parked in the sun can double within just 12 minutes, reaching up to 75 degrees. A dog left in that heat will suffer horribly and die by the time the temperature reaches 55 degrees. Similarly, our wildlife can have a tough time coping in extreme heat conditions. Something as simple as putting out shallow containers of water can help birds, reptiles, and small animals cool down.

If you see a pet left in an unattended vehicle, notify centre management immediately with the car rego number and contact: RSPCA Qld 1300 ANIMAL (1300 264 625) or DPI Call Centre (13 25 23). If you see sick or injured wildlife please call: RSPCA Qld 1300 ANIMAL (1300 264 625). For more information please visit www.rspcaqld.org.au

Family Health

Yummabubba Baby Foods, taking the stress out of meal times

100% natural baby food, 100% Australian owned,

made from 100% Australian produce, delivered to your door.

The holiday season is upon us and it’s time to enjoy ourselves with family and friends. Healthy habits, which are usually part of a family’s daily routine, can easily fall by the

wayside during this period so it’s a good idea to remind ourselves of how to maintain a healthy balance. This will also ensure the family feel energised and ready for the start of a busy New Year.

With the festive season and school holidays come plenty of party invitations and social gatherings. Traditional party food is usually high in energy so try to avoid anyone being ravenous before they go. Have a light snack before heading out such as a small tub of yoghurt, a piece of wholemeal toast with tomato and cheese or a banana.

When it comes to celebrations over lunch or dinner, watch portion sizes as it’s easy to pile your plate high when there are lots of delicious options. If having dessert, consider sharing to halve the energy intake and watch what you drink. Opt for water over soft drinks and fruit juice.

Planning ahead when it comes to meals is just as important during the holidays especially when children are at home and hungry in between meals. Stock up on fresh fruit and vegetables and have them chopped up ready

to go in the fridge. Ready-made snacks from the supermarkets are handy in the holidays, however, always read the nutrition label carefully even if they are from the “health food” aisle.

When offering kids treats in the holidays provide a mix of healthy options alongside traditional favourites such as chocolate or chips. Fresh fruit smoothie popsicles, frozen grapes and strawberries or jelly made with freshly squeezed juice make for healthy sweet treats.

Avoid mindless overeating so try to avoid eating in front of screens. When possible, sit down as a family and enjoy a meal together without distraction. When dining out or getting takeaway, consider healthier options such as Japanese and Vietnamese cuisine or go for thin crust pizzas and tomato based pasta sauces.

Lastly, when it comes to screen time, ensure there are some limits even if it is the holidays. Luckily the festive season in Australia is a warm one making it easy to be active outdoors as a family. Whether it’s cooling off at the beach or pool, going for an early morning bike ride or late afternoon stroll, there are plenty of reasons to get off the couch, get active and stay healthy.

Give Yourself the Gift of Good Health this Christmas

TOP 10 REMINDERS 1. Avoid going hungry to parties. 2. Watch portion sizes.3. Plan ahead.4. Eat with all of your senses.5. Get outdoors and get active as a family. 6. Read nutrition labels on snack foods carefully. 7. Choose healthy treats and snacks.8. Choose water over soft drink and juice.9. Opt for healthy takeaway options. 10. Don’t let screen time get out of control.

Latch Key Kids when can parents leave their kids ‘Home Alone’? With our younger children now moving into a high school environment, many parents are wondering how to deal with after school care arrangements. Should children walk home by themselves? At what age can we give them a key to the front door to let themselves in until we return?

We speak to Family Law expert Hayley Atkinson who talks us through her experiences and the law in relation to leaving kids ‘home alone’.

When I was a little girl I can remember begging my parents to trust me with leaving me and my younger sister home alone. We lived in a rural area where there was no easy access to civilisation but our friendly neighbours were close enough.

I believe I was ten (going on twenty) and my sister only eight but I considered myself responsible enough to be able to handle things alone. When my parents eventually granted me home alone freedom, I was so chuffed. I got to stay at home, watch television or movies and fend for myself and my younger sister. We even had spaghetti bolognese that we got to reheat. It was going to be ah-mazing!

But what I had not anticipated was just how much security my parents provided by simply being home at night. Our home is very open, with glass sliding doors and windows throughout. They were always left open, primarily because it was so sticky and hot and we wanted to capture any breeze passing through. Another reason was because we lived so far out of the main hub that it was very unlikely we would ever come across a stranger.

Parenting

Mum and dad always locked the house up when they went to bed, long after me, so I had not even thought to “lock up” when the sun went down.

So there I was sitting in the lounge room, petrified because I was so convinced that if I moved to shut the doors I would be seen by whatever was out there. I remember mustering up enough courage to eventually run around the house with great speed and lock every door and window. But I still felt like someone was watching me. So, again, I ran up the hallway and to my room. That is where my sister and I stayed until mum and dad came home after three or four hours.

Operation home alone was a not so great success.

I realise that I am not alone in these types of stories and, like my parents back then, many parents still struggle to identify an appropriate age to leave their children home alone. It can be even more tricky now that all states have legislation in place that enables parents to be prosecuted if a child is left alone.

The question on parents’ lips is what age does your child need to be in order to avoid prosecution and how long “alone” is okay?

Unfortunately, the answers to these questions are hard to regulate as every child and their level of maturity is going to be different and also every circumstance in which a child is left alone is going to be different.

For example, are we talking about children regularly coming home after school to an empty home for a couple of hours until parent/s finish work? Or are we talking about the one off occasion like my situation, or even a quick duck into the petrol station to pay for fuel?

There is no uniform rule that applies across the country. Each state differs so it is important that parents are aware of the potential legal implications that could apply if a child is left alone.

Queensland is the only state to specify an age which a child must be before being left alone. In Queensland, it is a misdemeanour to leave a child under the age of 12 years for an “unreasonable” time without supervision. But what is an “unreasonable” amount of time is discretionary and will depend on the circumstances.

All other states do not pin point an exact age but instead, rely on meeting the parental responsibility requirements. In other words, if a child is not properly fed, clothed, housed or does not have adequate safety or supervision then the Police or Government Authority can step in and remove the children. If this were to occur, then parents can be charged.

In the cases that have been prosecuted and have gone before the Court, most result in the parents receiving a good behaviour order and a reality check about their responsibilities as a parent. But be warned, these offences can also attract significant fines and even jail time if the circumstances warrant!

If you’re thinking about leaving your children at home, consider whether they are ready. Do they make sensible decisions? Do they get frightened easily? Do you think they would cope in an emergency situation? Be honest with yourself and the maturity of your child.

If you and your child/ren are “ready” then consider all the practicalities that go with being left alone. Make sure your home is safe, ground rules are set, an elder sibling is in charge if possible (but note, this does not relieve you of your responsibilities as a parent if something were to go wrong) and ensure that your child knows what to do in case of emergency. Write down telephone numbers for them in case they need to contact someone.

Letting children stay home alone is a natural part of growing up and helps create independence. The laws are not designed to catch and punish every parent who leaves a mature child for an hour or so. Be sensible, realistic and reasonable in your arrangements.

It is very common nowadays for parents to drive their children to a host of after school activities from martial arts, swimming and gymnastics to art classes,

music, dance and drama. These activities are good – in moderation. But what happens if your child has special needs? This article will focus on those kids with sensory processing issues, who find extracurricular activities hard.

Sensory processing issues occur when the interconnectivity of the various senses are out of sync. The information from sight, touch, sound, experience of movement and gravity (vestibular), experience of own body (proprioception), taste, smell and sense of own internal body organs for hunger, tiredness or illness (interoception) can arrive in the processing part of the brain at slightly different times. This can make for a very confusing world and some unpredictable behaviour in our kids. There are many different kinds of sensory problems.

Kids who are Over-sensitiveSome kids are over-sensitive and over-react to sensations. They can appear withdrawn, anxious, cautious, and/ or over-active and explosive at times. Some can dislike noise, crowds and change rooms, get very stressed when balls come towards them, or with light touch as kids brush against them. Some can be really frightened of movement, especially

when it’s out of their control (such as unstable playground equipment).

Our aim is to help these children feel safe and able to calmly cope with the barrage of stimulation. The key here is using a supportive, calm and predictable parenting/ teaching style. Avoid forcing a child to participate but rather support your child to engage at his or her own pace.

Sports / activities involving heavy work to the joints and muscles, deep touch to the skin and deep breathing will help the child regulate.

Sports that are often helpful are:• Gymnastics

• Dance

• Rugby League

• Swimming

• Martial arts

• Rock-climbing, rowing and canoeing

• Playing wind instruments

• Art

• Drama

Kids who are Under sensitive or Under responsive to sensationSome kids are under-sensitive and take a long time to respond. They tend have inefficient vestibular/ proprioceptive processing (about

movement, balance and body awareness sense). They can be lethargic and sluggish, preferring sedentary activities. They tend to have low tone, weak core stability, be more clumsy, tire easily, find it hard to sit or stand still, have poor balance and heavy movements. These kids need an engaging, up-beat motivational style to help them wake up and be engaged.

Other kids are sensory seekers and need intense sensations to feel right in their body. They have an incessant drive to move, touch, make noise and taste things. They may have weak core stability. These kids need an upbeat style of interaction that has predictability and a rhythm to help them be more regulated.

The following sports tend to work well for both types:• Sports with music - gymnastics, rhythmic

gymnastics and dancing

• Horse-riding

• Yoga/ pilates

• Martial arts

• Swimming

• Playgrounds - with support including swings

and monkey bars

• Using a home gym - trampoline, suspended

tyre, lycra hammocks, swings, hammocks,

forts, monkey bars and a lot of jump and

crash onto big pillows.

• Gardening - lifting, carrying, digging.

• Playing with a big gym ball - lying on tummy

and rolling, sitting and bouncing

• Keeping an active lifestyle

Clumsy and Un-coordinated kidsSome kids have poor co-ordination, rhythm

and timing. They struggle to move through

space, are clumsy and have to mentally work

things out before they act. Other kids struggle

with feeling their body at all. It is as if they are

wearing gloves over their whole body and ear-muffs. These kids need to watch all their movements so they can guide their body in what to do. Both types of kids take a long time with lots of practice to master new skills.

These kids need a relationship and teaching style that is supportive and encouraging. They may need to debrief regularly around how much they hate something (when what they are really saying is that it is hard). Work to facilitate problem-solving and success and make sure this child gets plenty of time out to relax.

Beneficial activities for both these types of kids include:• Martial arts

• Swimming

• Playground games

• Piano and other music

• Dance/ gymnastics

• Yoga/ pilates

When things go wrong• If your child wants to quit, you need to

become a detective and find out why?

• Is the activity genuinely too hard or just perceived as too hard?

• Are they a perfectionist and don’t feel good enough?

• Is the activity not meeting their personality style?

• Are their problems with their relationships with peers or a teacher at the sport or activity?

• Does the activity challenge their sensory system too much?

• Are they over-scheduled with too many after school or weekend commitments?

• Do they need some time at home?

Our aim as parents and teachers is to help kids grow, achieve, be successful and rise above their failures. Work with your individual child’s and family needs, make sure you are not doing too many activities and enjoy the process of finding the right fit for your child in their extra-curricular activities.
