Hello! With a certain other half careering towards his half century mark in May, we were definitely in the right frame of mind for this issue! But party ideas for adults are a lot more difficult to decide on and we found ourselves wishing we were still at an age where we didn’t have to think twice about doing something active before scoffing the food and cake – and where we also didn’t have to worry about ending up with snapped hamstrings (as said nearly 50 year old experienced when he raced his sons on the beach last summer to prove he was still speedy)!

So we’ve settled for something a little more sedentary for us, and are leaving the active stuff to the youngsters – and honestly, they’re spoilt for choice as you can see in our party feature!

Happy celebrations!

Why walk when you can run?

Junior parkrun is a series of 2km runs for children aged between 4 and 14. Held on Sunday mornings in areas of open space around the UK, they’re open to all, free, and are safe and easy to take part in. Adults can run with younger children but can’t cross the finish line!

In the North West there are 6 events: Marple, Northwich, Queen’s Park Bolton, South Manchester, Warrington and Wilmslow.

Once registered with parkrun you bring your barcode to each event and your results get recorded. This means you can keep track of your finishing times and also work towards milestone rewards – for juniors you earn wristbands after 11, 22 and 50 events.

Nothing beats a run in the park with some friends! www.parkrun.org.uk

Academy BattlesThe Government has announced that it plans to turn all schools into Academies, taking them out of local Education Department control.

But parents and teachers have expressed their concerns about the plans, which they say will be disastrous for education. The National Union of Teachers which represents staff at many schools across the UK, has organised protests across the country.

The government says that it is making the change because Academies, which are not within local authority control, are able to raise standards as they are more autonomous.

They say that heads have more powers to improve failing schools and that greater control is put into the hands of teachers and heads.

However, critics of the scheme have said that the move will have a devastating effect on schools, as there is no evidence that Academies perform better than other schools.

The move will also reduce the role of parent governors, who currently help decide school policy. The move will also shift ownership of the schools to private companies who will be able to sell off the land if they wish. In 2012, ministers admitted that Academy school playing fields could be sold off without any checks.

Preschools – your need to know guideBy Liat Hughes-Joshi

More parents than ever send their children to preschool or nursery, thanks in part to free places for three and four-year-olds, and for some two-year-olds.

Preschools are about learning through play and their benefits can be significant, although there’s no obligation to sign up if you don’t think it will be right for your child. So what are the upsides?Beyond the obvious – a few hours of childcare – preschool is a great way to get your little one used to being separated from you or other carers. It could also help them become familiar with an environment that’s more like school and some of the routines and behaviours expected there, such as sharing, listening and taking turns.

How much free childcare am I entitled to? All three and four-year-olds in England receive 570 hours per year of free childcare. This can be in a preschool, nursery or with a registered childminder and is normally taken as 15 hours weekly over 38 weeks, but there’s often flexibility on this. How can I choose the right preschool for my child? Speak to other local parents about their experiences and read Ofsted reports for the nurseries / preschools you’re considering. Really though, there’s no substitute for taking a proper look around, meeting staff and seeing what your own impressions are. How many hours a week? You don’t have to use up the full entitlement of 570 hours and could send your child for fewer if you think 15 hours a week is

too much for them initially. Some parents find it works well to start off with just a couple of mornings weekly and build up to more (you will often be able to pay for further hours beyond the entitlement). How can I get my child settled in?Staff will be very aware that young children may need help getting used to a new place and people and so should have some sort of settling in procedure. If you’re especially concerned, speak to them and see what their advice is – you may even be able to stay with your child during the first few visits.

Clubs & classes

Most parents agree that getting young children involved in sport from a young age will help them to keep fit and get into the habit of enjoying regular exercise.

Sport can also help kids learn important life lessons such as how to deal with winning and losing. It also encourages them to make friends and learn how to be part of a team.

Outdoor sports are a great way for children to get some fresh air and have fun with their friends. But how do you choose which sport is right for your child?

Kicking offHow to get your little ones involved in sports clubs and which outdoor activities to choose from. By Adrian Warner

It’s important for children to get a flavour of a range of sports available and decide for themselves which one they prefer. Sport should always be fun, especially for small kids, so to help you decide which one to introduce your child to, here are five outdoor options they will love:

1. FootballThere are a number of clubs around the country that offer coaching during the school holidays for boys and girls aged from five to 11. These are usually a morning or afternoon class where young

As the weather begins to improve after a damp and dismal winter, the opportunity’s now here to get your youngsters active and in the fresh air.

Trafford MV offers cricket coaching for ages 7 – 12 at their club in Sale (M33 6LR) and are recruiting for brand new talent as they grow the section from grass roots, looking to field 2 junior sides at under U9 and U11 age levels. Call Andrew Hamer on 07766 512454 for more info.

And following the cricket, children can move on to rugby as the weather changes – under 5s begin with multi skills activities, followed by a graduated structure through tag and touch rugby with contact gradually introduced as they get older, providing a structured learning of the safe skills required to minimise any risks. There’s a full range of age groups up to Under 17’s and they also encourage girls to get involved as they seek to grow a girls rugby section. Contact Wilf Dooley 01942 884542 for info about the rugby.

Trafford MV also has activities for mums and dads with Pilates, softball and fitness bootcamp in addition to senior Rugby and Cricket for dads – and they also have a busy social side for all the family to enjoy.www.pitchero.com/clubs/traffordmv

children are introduced to the basic skills of the sport.

2. RugbyFirstly, don’t panic: the first years of rugby are not about scrums, mauls and tackling and you don’t need to worry about the complicated rules of the game either. Boys and girls alike are encouraged to play a simple, non-contact game together involving tags, in which tackles are replaced by touching a player or removing a tag from their clothing. The focus here is on developing passing and running skills.

3. TennisChildren from three years old can learn the basic rules and skills of tennis using smaller courts and nets and with child-sized rackets. Some clubs will also have squash and badminton courts, so your child can try out a range of games with friendly coaches.

4. HockeyFor children, the game will be much gentler than that for adults and sticks and pitches are smaller. Some clubs have a game called “Quicksticks” which is suitable from seven years, which is a four-a-side game that can be played anywhere and uses a bigger ball for safety.

5. Multi-SportsIf you are not sure which sport to choose, look out for multi-sports sessions run by companies or local authorities where kids can try out a variety of sports such as athletics, rugby, football, netball, tennis and cricket. These are often available in the summer holidays and are a great way for kids to find out what they really like.

Beg, Steal or BorrowHow to organise holiday childcareBy Claire Muffett-Reece

Worried how you’ll juggle work with childcare over holidays? Relax – there are plenty of options to ensure you’ll still be employed come the first week of September…

Looking after your children during half terms and the seemingly never end-ing summer holiday is no easy feat for any working parent, with many mums and dads resorting to booking their annual leave separately to ensure someone keeps

an eye on the kids. But it doesn’t have to be that way – regardless of your budget, there are many affordable solutions to keep those wages coming in while your little ones enjoy the summer break.

RelativesYour first port of call should be looking at close family members to see if anyone could potentially help out. Your parents or in-laws are ideal, as most will revel in the chance to spoil their grandchildren with days out and endless supplies of ice cream! Bear in mind their age and don’t over-burden them if they agree to help, sticking to set times and helping with packed lunches or sending your kids with pocket money towards yet another trip to the zoo. It might be free childcare for you but that doesn’t mean it won’t cost your parents!

School mumsWhy not have a chat with other mums at the school gates to see if they can help?

A win-win situation; your child gets to spend the day with one of their friends – plus you save on childcare costs! Make sure you only ask mums you feel confident leaving your child with – and who your little one feels comfortable around – and take a little gesture of thanks over at the end of the day, such as a small box of chocolates. However, most mums might instead prefer a ‘play date swap’ in return, where they look after your child one day in the week and you look after theirs another.

ChildmindersFor many working parents, childminders are the best option over the school holidays, often sticking to the same person they normally get to do the school drop off and pick up. If you don’t have one, ask friends and other mums who they recommend, or look online for Ofsted-registered carers. A more affordable solution to higher-priced kids’ clubs, remember to ask what stipulations they have, such as you providing your child’s meals or whether you’re expected to pay if they are sick or you go away.

Holiday play schemes/summer campsOpen most kids’ school bags towards

the end of term and you’ll find half a dozen leaflets offering discounted daycare for specific age groups and boasting a number of fun activities. Usually catered to fit around school hours, they are often based on themes to appeal to your youngster, with football, science, dance and drama top of the hit-list. Run privately or by your local council, this competitively priced option can be booked on a daily or weekly basis and is a fun-filled way for your little one to meet new friends and gain skills in the process.

Working from homeLast, but by no means least, is the hope your boss might be sympathetic to your situation and agree to let you work from home every now and then. Explain your childcare struggle as soon as you can, asking if a day a week might be an option over the holidays before giving them time to think about it. If they agree, make sure you complete all tasks assigned to you on time – regardless of the distractions that come with a demanding child at home! Not getting your job done at home will soon be picked up by management, meaning you’ll most definitely be refused if you ever broach the subject again!

My eldest daughter has had a bit of a dilemma each birthday for the last couple of years as she feels too old for a party (at 10?!), but still wants to do something to celebrate with her friends

The perfect solution is something activity based where the kids get to try something new together, have a laugh and follow it up with some cake. So this year we took Lily and a group of friends to Awesome Walls in Stockport to try some indoor climbing wall fun.

Their parties are hosted by fully qualified instructors so you’re guaranteed safety and the kids are shown the correct way to climb. We had two hosts for Lily’s party, both of whom were brilliant, helping the kids out, making it fun for everyone. They pushed the ones who were confident, popping in the odd racing challenge

here and there, but then altering what was asked of the more timid climbers and the younger members of the group. Everyone had plenty of turns working on a couple of different walls, honing skills going both up and down! The session was rounded off with a game of Twister on a lower level wall. I watched from the mezzanine level with a coffee; a convenient viewing platform that puts you at a good height for some action shots…plus it gives the mums a chance to relax and chat. For party food and cake after the action, there’s a great area just out of the main hall.

My kids, Lily (10), Izzy (7) and Logan (5) gave this party a big thumbs-up. Perfect for boys and girls, it appeals to a good range of ages, with lots of fun and laughs, good exercise and a new skill learned. Definitely gets a Families recommendation. Parties are suitable from age 6+.

Traditional party packages are one hour with plenty of themes to choose from such as pirates, under the sea or wild west. Their stories and songs are all originally written and extras include party bags and pass the parcel.

With over ten years’ experience running weekly drama workshops, interactive shows and birthday parties in London, the northern branch of Theatre Tots Manchester has now opened its doors.

‘Just a quick thank you for Eve’s party. You managed to entertain all the children from 1-8 years old – that is amazing. The children were captivated by your story and Eve had the most amazing time…’ For more information, contact Helen. 07928 731323 / [email protected]

With reasonably priced flights from Manchester to Geneva then a short drive to Morzine, there is a warm welcome waiting from Paul and Francesca Eyre at Chilly Powder. With the main chalet - Au Coin du Feu - plus two chalets next door, you can organise your own meals,
