Families magazine is proud to be 20 years old. Today Families Solent East is part of a thriving group of franchised magazines across the UK from the Solent to Fife, but twenty years ago it was a much smaller operation. The first issue in October 1990 was a cut and paste affair in black and white— meaning scissors and glue, not copy and paste! There are now 30 editions of Families in the UK and well over 500,000 copies are printed across the group. Throughout it all, Families has remained true to the original thinking; a hands-on magazine for busy families, with useful information, centred around the local community, featuring local news, events and ‘What’s On’ for parents.

SOLENT EAST REPORTFamilyewsN*The best Christmas ideas are often found in unusual places.*If you are looking for something a little different for that someone special, then www.hants.gov.uk/christmas is well worth a look.

The website is the one-stop-shop where you can find quirky Christmas gifts and décor. It features everything from the Culture-all Passport to hampers and from Christmas trees to Christmas wreaths.

It also contains useful information about the events and activities that are happening, around the county, over the Christmas period, including where the best pantos and grottos are.

On the website you can even find out where to get the tideal outfit for a festive fancy dress party or somewhere to hold a unique Christmas shindig.

It’s a well used phrase, but we really do think that Hampshire’s got Christmas all wrapped up!

Take a look at www.hants.gov.uk/christmas

The Victorian era is considered the golden age for Christmas as well as children’s literature and book illustration and with this in mind Portsmouth Historic Dockyard is inviting visitors to step into the magical world of the Victorian Festival of Christmas, taking place on Friday 26th – Sunday 28th November, and explore their very own Wonderland. Entering its 11th Chapter, the ‘Victorian Festival of Christmas’ will not only celebrate 150 years since the launch of HMS Warrior 1860, but also the colourful characters of childhood memories.

There will be snow in the air and underfoot to recreate the festive spirit of times gone-by as visitors stroll down the Victorian Street. The aroma of roasted chestnuts and mulled wine will fill the air, as will the sounds of carol singers, music and performances at every turn, bringing the Victorian age to life. Further information visit www.christmasfestival.co.uk

This year has seen the introduction of many new forms of cycle training in Portsmouth including the Bikeability scheme. Bikeability is the Cycling Proficiency for the 21st century,

designed to give the next generation the skills and confidence to ride their bikes on today’s roads. There are three Bikeability levels and children

will be encouraged and inspired to achieve all three levels, recognising that there is

always more to learn and to enjoy on a bike. All year 6 children attending Portsmouth schools that encourage cycling as a means of transport to and from school will be offered free places on the course. Visit www.bikeability.org.uk

for more information.

Bikeability!27 November - 5 December 2010First mounted in 1975, National Tree Week is the UK’s largest tree celebration, annually launching the start of the winter tree planting season.

Each year, Tree Council member organisations such as voluntary bodies and local authorities, up to 200 schools and community groups set up events, inspiring upward of a quarter of a million people to get their hands dirty and together plant around million trees.

Please visit www.treecouncil.org.uk for more information on how to get involved and even organise your own tree-planting event.

West Wight Ladybirds netball club are looking for more players. They meet every Wednesday at West Wight Sports Centre and there’s no need to have played for a club before. So if you haven’t played since school and want to get back into it, please contact Susanah Jennings at [email protected] or ring on 01983 759511.

With its origins in ancient customs, the annual Tree Dressing at the Weald & Downland Open Air Museum, at Singleton, near Chichester is a fascinating and unusual celebration of the life-giving properties of trees. Children and visitors of all ages are invited to make a lantern for the final procession.

The lanterns make a spectacular display of colour and light on the trees in the beautiful parkland of the South Downs. This year’s Tree Dressing event takes place on Sunday 5th December. Visit www.wealddown.co.uk

Many people are aware that the Isle of Wight Zoo has a long history of providing sanctuary for tigers. For several years the Isle of Wight Zoo has been supporting tiger conservation in India through funding projects identified by charity Global Tiger Patrol. Earlier this year the zoo received the exciting news that their current project, supporting local advocacy for tiger conservation project in Karnataka, will be expanding. The area is populated with wild tigers in the Kudremukh National Park and Bhadra Reserve, and the project leader has been working tirelessly with local people to promote conservation.

The project has three main aims: Educating local people, Building a communication network that involves the whole community in spotting signs of wildlife crime and reducing conflict between tigers and humans by supporting people who want to move out of the park.

This year the Isle of Wight Zoo’s contribution will increase threefold, to over £10,000. This will mean a renewed emphasis on conservation fundraising, which the team are already very excited about. Isle of Wight residents can expect to see some strange and bizarre events going on through the year, all in aid of the zoo’s flagship species. And if any individuals, organisations or businesses would like to get involved they’ll be welcomed with open paws! www.isleofwightzoo.com

Collect those pens A new campaign has been launched in schools across the country encouraging students to upcycle used writing instruments. Sponsored by Berol, Sharpie and Paper Mate in partnership with TerraCycle UK, the programme teaches pupils about sustainability while helping to raise funds for schools, charities and non-profit organisations nationwide. Collection centres will be established in 370 UK-based schools and for every writing instrument collected, 2p will be contributed to a school or charity of the participant’s choice. The collected writing instruments will be dissembled and reprocessed to make a variety of new products. Interested schools can sigh up at www.terracycle.co.uk

A new

recycling scheme aims to raise £5m for schools through collecting old mobile

phones and empty printer cartridges. 750 schools have already signed up to Support Your School, a “cash for trash” scheme where schools receive £1 for every empty ink cartridge and £3 for unwanted mobile phones. Not only is this a great way to introduce pupils to the issues involved with recycling but it also raises much needed additional income for the schools involved. The fundraising scheme will raise millions for schools as well as reducing by 10% the number of inkjet cartridges going to landfill. Support Your School is free to participate in and encourages schoolteachers, pupils, parents and the community to get involved in recycling. Visit www.supportyourschool.co.uk for more information.

Saint Nicholas is commonly identified with Santa Claus due to his reputation for generosity, secret gift-giving and his kindness to children.

Christmas was banned by the Puritans under the rule of Oliver Cromwell. In 1647 Parliament passed a law making Christmas illegal. The ban was lifted only when the Puritans

lost power in 1660.

Fac tsFun Father Christmas’ reindeers are called

Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donner, Blitzen, & Rudolph.Eight of these names are taken from Clement C. Moore’s ‘A Visit From

St. Nicholas’ and the ninth from the song ‘Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer’.

It takes 4 - 15 years to grow a Christmas tree of typical height (about 2m).

The Queen’s Christmas speech was televised for the first time in 1957.

The definition of a

white Christmas

in the UK is for a single

snow flake (perhaps

amongst a shower of

mixed rain and snow)

to be observed falling

in the 24 hours of

December 25th.

The tradition of hanging stockings over the fireplace derived from Dutch children placing their shoes next to the fireplace on Christmas Eve. Stockings later replaced the shoes.

Bing Crosby’s

Christmas classic

“White Christmas” is the

best-selling Christmas

song of all time.

The first Christmas card was designed

by John Horsley in 1840 but was not sold until 1843.

While working for inventor Thomas Edison, Edward Johnson had lights made for his Christmas tree leading to the Christmas tree lights we know today.

In the 19th century, the

Christmas cake was

eaten on Christmas Eve.

It was consider unlucky

to cut a Christmas

Postmen in Victorian

England were

popularly called Robins

a robin delivering

Santa is extremely busy at the North Pole, making sure all

the presents, including yours, are ready and wrapped for

Christmas Eve.

It’s a very exciting time for all; Rudolph and Santa can’t wait

to land at your home with all your gifts. Rudolph is especially

looking forward to eating the carrots you kindly leave and

maybe a mince pie for Santa.

Santa is happy to receive your cards and letters now but

because of a very busy Xmas ahead, please write to him no

later than Wednesday 15th December.

To ensure Santa receives your letter on time please send it by

1st or 2nd class post to the following address.

Santa/Father Christmas,

Santa’s Grotto,

Reindeerland, SAN TA1

Santa will respond to as many letters as possible, in between

getting the sleigh and presents ready for the long journey on

Christmas Eve. Remember to clearly write your name and

address in your letter.

Be good and enjoy your holidays.

Festive advice for helping ensure

your letter to Santa arrives safely

1. Get in the Christmas mood and put on some Christmas music. Ask your parents for some paper and a pen. 2. Let Santa know who’s writing the letter. Of course he knows who you are! But you need to let him know that it’s you that is writing the letter because he gets so many letters every day.

3. Ask Santa how he’s been. Santa only hears from you once a year, so before you ask about toys, it’s polite to ask how he’s doing or how the reindeer and elves are.

4. Tell him how good you’ve been this year. Tell Santa Claus about some of the good things you’ve done this year. Have you been nice to your sister or brother? Have you helped your parents by putting all your toys away? Santa already knows these things but he likes to be reminded.5. NOW you can let him know what toys you’d like. Try to put the things you really, really want at the top of the list.6. Thank Santa and sign your name. Give the letter to your parents to send. They’ll make sure it gets to Santa in time for Christmas.

The British pantomime can mainly be traced back to the 16th-century Italian

travelling theatre performed by wandering actors. Because of language and

communication problems, these shows increasingly focused on physical acting,

slapstick, comedy and funny costumes.

The first ‘modern’ pantomime dates back to 1773, when the Theatre Royal

in Drury Lane presented Jack the Giant Killer, followed within the next three

decades by Robinson Crusoe, Aladdin, Babes in the Wood and Cinderella.

THE HISTORY OF

Panto

DID yOU KNOW?

To this day, evil pantomime characters

enter the stage from the left, and

goodies from stage right, echoing a

tradition which always placed the

entrances to heaven and hell on these

respective sides of the stage.

MODERN PANTOMIME

There’s no such thing really as

‘traditional’ pantomime. The whole

point of the genre is that it’s

constantly evolved and adapted

throughout its history to keep up

with changing public tastes. Which

is why pantomime is still just as

relevant today as it ever has been.

Oh yes it is!

CROSS-DRESSING

Cross-dressing was introduced into

pantomime around the 1880s, with

the introduction of the ‘Principal

Boy’, played by a girl. In an era

when ladies were dressed very

conservatively, the sight of an

attractive young female clad in

calf-hugging tights was always

guaranteed to swell box-office figures.

ANIMAL MAGIC

The Victorian era saw the increasing

importance of animal roles in pantos.

Famous panto animals include Jack’s

cow, Aladdin’s camel and Dick

Whittington’s cat, not to mention

Priscilla the Goose and Puss in Boots.

MAGICAL ADVENTURES, INTELLIGENT ANIMALS, BOyS WHO ARE

REALLy GIRLS AND WOMEN WHO ARE REALLy MEN…

IT MUST BE THE PANTOMIME SEASON AGAIN.
