Such was her success that she next took her cakes to craft markets and local tea-rooms, supplying sponges and cupcakes.

Now Laura provides a bespoke service for all celebration cakes, from cupcakes and cake pops to wedding cakes – throughout the whole of Surrey. Call Laura on 07940 42 52 61. www.cakeybakes.co.uk

Birdwatching Students across Surrey have been monitoring the attendance of feathered visitors to their schools in the RSPB’s Big Schools Birdwatch survey.

The blackbird came top of the class in 2012 for punctuality and attendance across Surrey; the blue tit came in a close second. The starling was the third most-spotted bird. Over 1500 school children and teachers from 35 schools in Surrey counted birds in this annual survey during the last two weeks of January.

The blackbird is at the top of the national league, too, for the fourth year running. They eat invertebrates including worms and grubs, which they can "nd more easily in milder winter conditions. Open playing "elds in schools can provide a rich area of feeding for birds.

Big Pedal - Winning SchoolsChildren from schools across Reigate and Banstead have helped save parents across the UK over £368,000 in unnecessary fuel costs in just three weeks by helping to cycle a total of a million miles to school.

The journeys were made as part of Sustrans’ Big Pedal – the UK’s biggest school cycling competition.

Well done to Kingswood School, Walton on the Hill Primary and Bramley School, Walton on the Hill, who came 1st, 2nd and 4th in the Reigate and Banstead Big Pedal.

Simon Pratt, Sustrans Regional Director for the East of England said: “Children who regularly cycle to school are "tter, more alert and better learners.” Nearly half of all children want to be able to get to school by bike but only two per cent do.

Since 1993 thousands of children across the UK have grown up with Monkey Music. Our unique teaching curriculum was written by classically trained musicians, and introduces music to very young children in a way they can easily understand and enjoy.

Grass cuttings, dried leaves, twigs and vegetable peelings are just some of the ingredients that can go into a compost bin or heap to make peat-free compost – ideal to use in potting or planting in your garden or allotment.

Getting started is easy. All you need is a compost bin or a small space in the garden to create a heap. Then just follow our easy guide to creating your own supply of natural food for your garden.Get composting today – for a greener tomorrow.

Compost is a natural, nutrient-rich food product for your garden. It will help improve soil structure and maintain moisture levels, while helping to suppress plant disease. It will have everything your plants need including nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium and will help bu!er soils that are very acidic or alkaline. Compost improves your soil’s condition and your plants and "owers will love it!

Home-made compost is natural and peat-free, which means it’s good for the environment outside your garden too. It reduces the need to buy peat products, which have been commercially sourced and extracted from peat bogs, resulting in the release of the carbon stored in them.

1. Find the right site. Ideally site your bin or heap on bare soil. If space is limited, put your bin on concrete, tarmac or patio slabs, but make sure there’s a layer of soil or existing compost on the bottom so garden creatures can colonise.

2. Add the right ingredients. You will need a mixture of green and browns. Fill your kitchen caddy with the right ingredients such as tea bags, taking care not to compost cooked food, meat or #sh.

3. Fill it up. Regularly empty your kitchen caddy and your garden waste into your bin or heap. Remember, a 50/50 mix of greens and browns is the perfect recipe for good compost.

4. Wait a while. Keep adding to your bin or heap and after 9-12 months the ingredients you have put in should have turned into a crumbly dark brown, earthy smelling material inside the bottom part of the bin or heap.

5. Collect the compost. Simply lift the bin o! the compost or open the hatch at the bottom and scoop out the fresh compost. Don’t worry if your compost looks a little lumpy with twigs and bits of eggshells – this is perfectly normal. If preferred, return any material not quite ready back into your bin or heap. If you have built your own, simply rake out the ready compost.

6. Use it. Watch your garden bloom. Your compost can be used for all types of planting needs – mix with soil to replenish pots, dig in to enrich "owerbeds and vegetable patches, use as a mulch to help keep moisture in the soil or use it to feed your lawn.

Whether you’re a keen gardener or just want to choose the greenest, most natural way to deal with your food and garden waste, composting is the perfect solution.

To !nd out more about how to build yourself a compost heap, or to buy a bin, starting from only £15.00 visit www.surreywastepartnership.org.uk or call 0844 571 4444. You’ll also !nd lots of other helpful tips and information there too.

The support we receive during pregnancy, childbirth and in the post-natal period – from family, friends, doctors and midwives - can all make a di!erence to our con"dence and to our experience of the whole process.

A survey recently published by Doula UK looked at the impact of support from a doula. It gathered data from 105 doulas and their 1,106 birth clients across a range of critical birth-related areas. The most dramatic "gures relate to breastfeeding and birth interventions. Women who used doulas needed signi"cantly less medical intervention in the birth process and had greatly increased breastfeeding success compared against the national average.

Better birthing – What do Doulas do?

What does a doula do? Doulas work with women and their families to prepare for the birth of their baby, helping them to fully explore their options, make informed decisions and support them as they adjust to life with a newborn baby. Every mother-to-be has di!erent needs; the doula’s role is #exible, to "t in with the family. Their support is not clinical – that remains the job of the midwife and medical sta!. Doulas o!er emotional and practical support.

Of the doula-supported families, 93 per cent attempted breastfeeding and 70 per cent were still exclusively breastfeeding after six weeks. The latest national "gures from the Department of Health show only 74.1 per cent of new mums attempt breastfeeding, and just 47 per cent are still exclusively breastfeeding at six weeks.

The survey showed that only 12 per cent of doula-supported births required medical interventions, such as the use of forceps, ventouse or Caesarean sections, compared to the latest national "gures of 37.3 per cent.

Doula UK represents the largest number of doulas in the UK. You can "nd local doulas and information about their training at doula.org.uk

Holidays

Holidays in the UK are more than a convenient option – they are a real treat. We are exploring Wales this year, to revisit a country with so many di!erent landscapes: the closest mountains to Surrey (though I’m not forgetting being at 1000 feet up the Tower at Leith Hill..); a beautiful coastline of bays and cli!s; three stunning national parks with protected wildlife and cultural heritage; waterfalls and lakes and – above all, a peaceful retreat from the bustle of busy lives.

Designed with families in mind, the award winning Clydey Cottages in Pembrokeshire is close to the coast at Cardigan and just a few miles from the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park. But, as we found out during our stay, the area can be appreciated from

the comfort of the cottages – with far-reaching views across the surrounding hills.

Two groups of stone cottages, one at Clydey and one at Fron Fawr, provide 4 and 5 star accommodation. Clydey o!ers outdoor play areas with ride-on toys plus indoor soft play

co!ee for parents), a games room and a massive supply of books and DVDs.

The magical ingredient for the kids – young and old – is the farm at the bottom of the meadow, where farmer Malcolm greets kids at 10am every day to feed the animals, from guinea-pigs and chickens to sheep, lambs, donkeys and ponies. Malcolm regularly meets children who are at "rst unsure of approaching animals and watches them gain in con"dence during their stay.

We met a two-year-old feeding the Shetland ponies with a piece of carrot on the end of a specially crafted stick. It was a testament to Malcolm’s care and patience. He loves to see how children change as they relax into rural life.

Parents can rejoice in discovering the heated swimming pool and the indoor and outdoor hot tubs – heated round the clock to make use of every precious moment. There is even a mini-gym!

Two walks around the 20-acre site are well marked, including a path down to the river and over a little bridge. For me this made a lovely 20-minute walk before the day’s activities began – a wonderful ‘deep breath’ and a great way to start the day.

But the beauty of Clydey is also in the generous provision of high quality accommodation: its 1-4 bedroom cottages all undergoing a continuous cycle of improvements including quality ensuites and bathrooms, central heating enhanced

equipped kitchens and ample living spaces.

The cottages at Clydey make a welcome homecoming, warm and well equipped, including plenty of plates, cups and cutlery for little ones. Jacqui and her husband Dewi are nearby to lend assistance and always ready to help. With just 10 cottages, the atmosphere is very relaxed – and clearly all the families were reveling in every moment. No wonder that many of their bookings are repeat visits or on personal recommendation.

Prices seem reasonable for this level of luxury and especially when you consider that Clydey Cottages are current holders of the ‘Best Place to Stay’ in both Pembrokeshire and Wales! Starting with £550/wk for a 1 bed, £800 /wk for a 2-3 bed and £1200 per week for the magni"cent 4 bed Farmhouse; prices rise in summer and main holidays, with the maximum at £750 for a 1 bed to £2400 for the

welcome), with just "ve cottages and no pool or farm animals on site, though all facilities at Clydey can be used - only 5 miles away.

Since 1993 thousands of children across the UK have grown up with Monkey Music. Our unique teaching curriculum was written by classically trained musicians, and introduces music to very young children in a way they can easily understand and enjoy.

A little research had led me to "nd freshly caught seafood and shell"sh at Porthgain harbour, just south of Fishguard, which made for a very happy Saturday morning, collecting the latest catch for our supper, followed by a brisk walk towards Abereiddy to try to watch some coasteering (didn’t quite get that far, but it was all oh, so beautiful) then back to Porthgain for scampi and chips – the best ever - at The Shed in the harbour.

Birthday Parties Venue Guide

Parties at "shers Farm Park

Suggestions from the heart!DO plan early – the best venues and entertainers are booked well in advance!DO consider a joint party – join forces and funds! But be clear about your expectations.DON’T be afraid to chase late replies. Put an RSVP date on the invitation, then nudge! DO check for allergies – chances are there will be some and parents don’t always tell you.DON’Tover cater. Appetites shrink as excitement builds!

DO plan your party to avoid key dates such as term end or religious holidays.DON’T invite too make children – and check whether siblings are likely to appear!DON’T obsess over ‘5 a day’ – this is not the time to force feed cucumber to every child.DON’T make it too long. Typically 90 minutes for 2-4yr olds, including tea. Two hours for 5+yrs.DO party bags – to prevent lots of upset children. But give them something useful, like seeds to plant - and a magazine.DO enjoy it. In the midst of chaos, press the pause button and enjoy the sight of your child having fun!

HIGHER NURSERY STANDARDS SCC’s Early Years Quality Improvement Award.Local nurseries and registered childminders in Surrey are now able to use a free service from Surrey County Council to encourage continuous improvements in their childcare settings. The Early Years Quality

progress against a set of agreed standards. To take part, early years settings need an Ofsted inspection outcome of ‘good’ or ‘outstanding’.

Lanes Kindergarten, in Walton on the Hill, Tadworth, received an ‘Outstanding’ Ofsted inspection report in 2010 and is now taking part in the Early Years QIA. Michelle Williamson, the owner and manager and her colleagues at the nursery all play a part in the process and can see the bene"ts of the scheme.

“As a setting it’s always positive to receive recognition for the hard work and professional dedication of the whole team. We are delighted to be taking part and will continue to make improvements and complete the award” said Michelle.

At the start of the process they met the Surrey Early Years team to discuss the paperwork needed to document their practice. They also meet other teams taking part. The scheme involves a whole team approach and requires everyone to re#ect on how things are done. Surrey Early Years provides a mentor who o!ers support and guidance.

Although it requires admin time to complete paperwork.,Michelle found that most was already documented in their policies & procedures.

Participating nurseries or childminders to complete the award in 2$ years or less. They receive an accreditation on completion.

Thanks to Michelle Williamson, Owner/Manager of The Lanes Kindergarten in Walton on the Hill, Tadworth for her help with this article. The Kindergarten is open "ve days a week in term time, with morning sessions 9am-12.15 and afternoon sessions 12noon – 3pm (excl Wed and Thurs) plus lunch clubs. Michelle can be contacted on 01737 814 207 (opening hours) or 07595 544 035 (eves). laneskindergarten.co.uk

National O!er Day for Secondary Schools

March 1st was National O!er Day for secondary schools, so parents will know by now if their child has received a place at their chosen school. About 16% of parents in Surrey will not have been o!ered their "rst choice school and have the right to appeal.

If you put a strong, coherent case together there is a good chance you can get the decision over turned.

TIPS FOR A SUCCESSFUL APPEAL

1) Choose only one school to appeal to. Be clear about the reasons you

2) Lodge your intention to appeal within the school’s deadline. You’ll be given at least 14 days notice of your hearing, and you can then submit a detailed case statement and supporting evidence.

3) Panels like to see rational parents with good research, who are rejecting the school o!ered for valid and evidenced reasons.

Consider the following areas and how they might help your case:

4) At least seven days before the hearing you’ll receive a copy of the school’s case.

5) Appeals are heard by a panel of three people independent of the school in question. A clerk will explain basic procedures, ensure any evidence is presented and may intervene to assist the panel. You are entitled to bring someone along to the hearing.

You should get the result within "ve working days. Appeals are not always successful, but if you feel strongly it’s worth appealing. You could have an exploratory chat with a specialist legal advisor to see if you have a strong case.

Laura Berman has extensive experience working on school admission appeals both at primary and secondary level. You can contact her on 020 7091 2700. !shermeredith.co.uk
