Agency History

Family and Child Abuse Prevention Center was founded in Lucas County in 1974 by a local

pediatrician and a small group of concerned citizens, who saw firsthand the devastating effects

of child abuse. While child protection and law enforcement agencies have a crucial role in

child protection, our founders had the foresight to see the need for additional community

partners. From the compassion, dedication, and vision of this small group of people, an or-

ganization evolved with dedicated professionals who diligently work to break the cycle of fam-

ily violence. With offices in Lucas and Ottawa Counties, Family and Child Abuse Prevention

Center served over 25,000 individuals in 2016.

The mission of Family and Child Abuse Prevention Center is to “intervene and educate to

reduce family violence”. Our services include home-based and school-based child abuse and

teen dating violence prevention programs, a Children’s Advocacy Center, court based advo-

cacy for victims of domestic violence, professional and community awareness trainings, and

facilitation and support of local abuse prevention coalitions.

FCAPC and CAC have a positive track record of participating in cooperative agreements and

community collaborations designed to prevent child abuse and other forms of family violence.

In 1974, FCAPC brought local hospitals together to form a child protection team. The Joint

Hospital Team continues to meet quarterly to provide education on issues related to child

abuse and to collect countywide child abuse statistics from area hospitals.
