They are detestable, disobedient, unfit for any good work.
Titus 1:16b
And our people must learn to devote themselves to good works,
so as to help cases of urgent need, and not be unfruitful.
Titus 3:14
Titus was Paul's trusted coworker and "child in the faith" (Titus 1:4), who the apostle
had left in Crete with the task of promoting order in the congregations in various
villages on that island (Titus 1:5). Helping Cretan Christians to learn the ways of
those redeemed by Christ Jesus was no easy task, for they "are always liars, evil beasts,
lazy gluttons" (Titus 1:12). Yet, followers of Jesus on the island of Crete, both young
and old, could learn new ways (Titus 2:1-10), becoming Christ's people who are
"zealous for good works" (Titus 2:14). No culture, then or now, is beyond redemption.
Though our world today is in many ways dark, disappointing, and discouraging, the
fact that some ancient Cretans learned a better way should give us hope.
