fantastic items from our collections, including stereographic views of campus

from the early 1900s and rare books dating from 1562 to 1975. The department’s

current exhibit, Behind the Paintbrushes and Pens: Illustrators and Authors

of Early 20th Century Travelogues, examines the dynamic lives of some of

the painters and writers of travelogues published between 1900 and 1915,

revealing a group of people just as interesting and delightful as the places they

visited.

Spanish faculty, learn more about the curriculum, and visit the spaces where

5:00—7:15 p.m. Friday Night Film Series: Under the Sun (2015), and panel discussion Golden Auditorium, Little Hall After years of negotiation, the Russian director, Vitaly Mansky was invited by

the North Korean government to make a film about one girl and her family

in the year she prepares to join the Children’s Union, on the “Day of the Shining

Star,” Kim Jong-Il’s birthday. And so it might seem joyous, as Mansky films her

in patriotic school pageants and in dance class, or with her parents, eating

delicious food in their picturesque apartment. But the government handlers

supervising the production did not realize that Mansky kept filming even

after they had shouted, “Cut.” The result is a film that reveals both the

country’s façade and that which lies behind it. The screening will be followed

by a faculty panel. Cosponsored by the Peace and Conflict Studies and Asian

Studies programs.

5:30 p.m. Tales of a Time Traveler Ho Tung Visualization Lab, 401 Ho Science Center Follow Dr. Who star, David Tennant, on adventure through time and explore

this history of our cosmos from Earth time to star time to cosmos time.

6:15 p.m. Extreme Weather Ho Tung Visualization Lab, 401 Ho Science Center Extreme Weather takes us to the front lines where few have gone. Follow

researchers and everyday heroes as they boat up to the melting tidewater

glaciers in Alaska, embed sensors in tornadoes in the Great Plains, and battle

out-of-control wildfires caused by drought in California. Through the lens of

their experiences, audiences discover surprising connections that help us

understand and adapt to our ever-changing weather.

awe-inspiring phenomena in the universe: a black hole. Where do they come

to stargaze and look through several of Colgate’s many telescopes, which

will be operated by current Colgate students. You can see the Milky Way, the

permitting.

Academy Field Colgate rugby will hold a fundraiser for Smilow Cancer Hospital Leukemia

raise awareness and funds to aid leukemia patients and research efforts

toward a cure. Both the men’s and women’s teams will be playing.

director will do short presentations about the spring 2017 Japan Study Group.

11:00 a.m—noon Natural Sciences & Mathematics Reception Ho Science Center Atrium Come to the beautiful Robert H.N. Ho Science Center for an informal visit

with faculty affiliated with the natural sciences, mathematics, environmental

studies, and geography. The reception will begin in the atrium, where you will

find signs directing you to meet-and-greets at various sites in the building.

The Linsley Geology Museum will be open and shows will be playing

throughout the day in the Ho Tung Visualization Laboratory, also located in

the Ho Science Center.

Noon German Department Luncheon 115/116 Lawrence Hall Following the Freiburg Study Group presentation at 11:00 a.m. in 105 Lawrence,

lunch will be served in the German Center across the hall in 115/116 Lawrence.

Students and family members will have the opportunity to ask questions

about Freiburg of both faculty and former student participants.

1:00 p.m. Defying Gravity: It Is Rocket Science! Ho Tung Visualization Lab, 401 Ho Science Center (For younger audiences) Meet Apollo Aurora, host of the Planetarium

Channel’s universally loved gravity news source in Defying Gravity: It Is Rocket Science! With special robot correspondents, Apollo and her team will explore

rocket power, gravity on other planets, monstrous black holes, and even what

keeps us grounded on Earth! Watch this brand-new planetarium show and

uncover the mysteries of gravity.

1:00—3:00 p.m. Hora de Familia 49 Broad Street (La Casa) This annual Family Weekend event is open to everyone, but it is tailored for

Hispanic families as the event will be fully in Spanish and will feature

traditional Hispanic Food. We will also have a performance by the Latin

American Dance team and a speech by the Latin American Student

Organization president.

2:00—4:00 p.m. Open House: Chapel House Chapel House Students and families are welcome to drop in, learn about Chapel House, and

receive a tour.

2:00—4:00 p.m. Colgate University Chamber Players, Laura Klugherz, Director Colgate Memorial Chapel Colgate University Chamber Ensemble with special guests Musica de Maestros

from Bolivia and Colgate Professor Michelle Bigenho. Enjoy music of Mozart,

Turina, Gamboa, and Jose White. Students, families, faculty, staff, and

community members welcome. A reception will follow in the garden level.

3:30—4:30 p.m. Wilderness Adventure Slideshow Little Hall Come watch the ”Wilderness Adventure 2017” slideshow, recapping the

pre-orientation activities for Wilderness Adventure trips.

5:00—6:30 p.m. Family Weekend Cocktail Reception Whitnall Field Registration required. All families are invited to toast Colgate; welcome by

President Brian Casey.

6:00—8:00 p.m. BSU Family Weekend Banquet Parker Commons Hosted annually by The Black Student Union, the Family Weekend Banquet

welcomes all families and students of Colgate University as well as the

members of the Hamilton community. Professors and/or core members will

deliver keynote speeches, and a catered dinner will follow.

7:30—9:00 p.m. General David Petraeus: Hosted by the Center for Freedom and Western Civilization

Colgate Memorial Chapel General David H. Petraeus (U.S. Army, retired) will visit campus to speak with

students and the local community. Tickets are not required for this event;

seats are available on a first-come, first-served basis. General Petraeus’s

address will touch on the situation in the Middle East regarding Iran, Iraq, and

Afghanistan; the future of NATO; the ongoing nuclear standoff with North

Korea; and a host of other issues related to the future of U.S. diplomacy with

China and Russia. Professor Robert Kraynak, political science professor and

director of Colgate’s Center for Freedom and Western Civilization, will be the

host and moderator.

8:00—10:00 p.m. Colgate Stand Up 2nd Annual Roast Battle Donovan’s Pub Colgate Stand Up’s “Roast Battles” occur once a semester and involve all

members of the club. Student comedians volunteer to participate in a

performative battle of wits in which each person delivers clever insults against

his/her opponent while the audience watches, all in an attempt to be crowned

that semester’s “Roast Champion.” All are welcome to attend, laugh, cheer,

and enjoy Donovan’s Pub food. (Some free food will be offered by the club for

those without meal plans.)

his work presses on territories of identity — race, sexual orientation, class —
