Thoroughfare Mountain Occupied. Wakhukjtojt, Sept. 21..[Associated Press dispatch.].A letter from Headquarter* Army of the Potomac received to-day says that den. Buferd, with a portion of his division, drove the Rebel pickets on Tm-sday through Madi¬ son Court House. Three miles bey on'1 he en¬ countered a strong force <>f the enemy's caval¬ ry, and after a spirited fight ho forced them to retreat, and drove them across the itapidan at the point where (lie Gordonsvilie liaiiroad in¬ tercepts the river. He Retires to Chnttanooga. The Rattles Sunday and Monday. The Enemy's Loss Greater Than Ours. Rurnside** Army in Dauger. Cim iknatx, Sept. 24..Mr. Shanks, the cor¬ respondent of the New York Herald, has ar¬ rived here from the battle-field of Chattanooga, v. here he witnessed two days ol the lighting. He says that semi-official reports of the battle, Irom Washington, .ire, in the main totally in¬ correct, and that really the Army of the Cum¬ berland has met with a defeat, which must put it on the defensive for some time to come. Thomas'corps is really the only one which did any fighting. On the first diy it defeated Eongstreet with horrible tlau/hter, driving him in great confusion lor over a mile across the Chn kamauga river. Longstreet, iu the two hours' fifiht, lost one thousaud men killed, aud double that number wounded. McCcck's and Crittenden's corps were, the same day. badly beaten, and tht enemy broke the center, dm ing Crittenden iu every direc¬ tion. The defeat of this part of the line caused Thomas to abandon his field, and fall back to protect his flank and re-establish his line; at the same time the enemy, not knowing what he had accidentally accomplished, tailed to pursue the advantage, and Wood and Negl»v went in the center, and re-established that part of the line. The day was our?, though the enemy held the field. We had taken three pieces of artillery more than we had lost on the first day. Thomas had deieated Longktreet. On the second day he saved Kosecrans' army from annihilation. From 10 to 12 o'clorfc on Sunday he fought tbe enemy, and repulsed him in" three charges, when, finding the assault in rain, the enemy pushed lor ward on the right and centre, and at the first charge broke Crittenden's anti McCook's linee, and routed their entire oom- mand, driving them in disgrace into Rossvill* and Chattanooga. Thomas with his corps sti 1 contested the day, and was enabled by the re¬ inforcements of Granger to hold a position un- till nightfall, which covered bis retreat to Ross vi lie. Mr. Shanks left at 7 o'clock, P. M., on Sun¬ day, and Chattanooga on the noon of Monday. Rosecrans was then falling back on Caattanoo- ga, where he wae perfectly safe from all Br&eg could do. Hie line* of communication were perfectly secure, and be had plenty of ammu¬ nition and provisions in Chattanooga to etaad a month's siege. The result is a defeat to us, as we have loet tremendously in material, not lees than fifty piece* of artillery falling into the bands of tbe enemy, though Bragg's army receipts tor twen- <y- The rebel loss in killed and wounded will ex¬ ceed our own. In killed, be lost doable oar number. Rosecrans was in no danger, bnt at tbe time Mr. Shanks left Chattanooga, the danger Co Burnside was very imminent. The neuea. a»»tiuyi iu Interrupt Raiire«t<i Travel. Louisville, Sept. 23..A dispatch was re¬ ceived here about aoon from Quartermaster General Meigs, a passenger on the morning train from Louisville to Nashville, announcing tne burning of the railroad bridge at Nolen, Ky., by the Rebels. The down train went back to Elizabeth town, and was detained there some four hours. Meanwhile a special train, with Adams fc Co.'s Express, comming North, put out the fire, which enabled the upward train to arrive nearly on their regular tic.e. The damage to the bridge was very slight. Th« numb*rof the guerrillas causing the distur¬ bance is estimated at from four to fourteen. TSe Massachusetts Republican State Con¬ vention. Wobckbtob, Mass., Sept.21..The Republi¬ can State convention assembled to-day. Gov. Andrew was re-nominated for election by ac¬ clamation, as were also all the present incum¬ bents of State offices. A committee on re«olu- tions was appointed, with Hon. George S. Boat- well as chairman. PRENTICEANIA. The rebel authorities issue bills promising to pay various amounts "six months after the recognition of tne independence of the Confed¬ erate States by the United States." That'* much like the promise little b)ys are some times in the babit of making to do a thing ..next day after never." The Chattanooga Rebel has »»no doubt that John Morgan laughs at the malice of his ene¬ mies." We suppose John's laughs are all hceee-laughs. The Charleston Mercury hopes that the rebel Generals will "*weep through the Northern cities, leaving only the blackened chimneys standing." But why shouldn't tbey "sweep" the "blackened chimneys" too f Woaldu't they make good chimney sweeps 1" It is said that Beauregard is preparing an earnest re modstrance against Gen. ull more for violating the constitution of Morris Island, the statute* ot Port Snnater, and the charter of Charleston. KT A lady who drowned herself for love near Pawtucket was recently borne to her grave on a bier carried exclusively by wfenen, and one fcbndred other women followed ia procession. ?

FROM ROSEt RASS' ARMY.He Retires to Chnttanooga. The Rattleso» Sunday and Monday. The Enemy'sLoss Greater Than Ours.Rurnside**Army in Dauger.Cim iknatx, Sept. 24..Mr. Shanks, the cor¬

respondent of the New York Herald, has ar¬rived here from the battle-field of Chattanooga,v. here he witnessed two days ol the lighting. He says that semi-official reports of the battle,Irom Washington, .ire, in the main totally in¬

correct, and that really the Army of the Cum¬berland has met with a defeat, which must putit on the defensive for some time to come.

Thomas'corps is really the only one whichdid any fighting. On the first diy it defeatedEongstreet with horrible tlau/hter, drivinghim in great confusion lor over a mile acrossthe Chn kamauga river. Longstreet, iu the twohours' fifiht, lost one thousaud men killed, auddouble that number wounded.McCcck's and Crittenden's corps were, the

same day. badly beaten, and tht enemy brokethe center, dm ing Crittenden iu every direc¬tion. The defeat of this part of the line causedThomas to abandon his field, and fall back toprotect his flank and re-establish his line; atthe same time the enemy, not knowing whathe had accidentally accomplished, tailed topursue the advantage, and Wood and Negl»vwent in the center, and re-established thatpart of the line. The day was our?, though theenemy held the field. We had taken three pieces of artillery more

than we had lost on the first day. Thomas haddeieated Longktreet. On the second day hesaved Kosecrans' army from annihilation. From 10 to 12 o'clorfc on Sunday he fought tbeenemy, and repulsed him in" three charges, when, finding the assault in rain, the enemypushed lorward on the right and centre, andat the first charge broke Crittenden's antiMcCook's linee, and routed their entire oom-mand, driving them in disgrace into Rossvill*and Chattanooga. Thomas with his corps sti 1contested the day, and was enabled by the re¬inforcements of Granger to hold a position un-till nightfall, which covered bis retreat toRossvi lie.Mr. Shanks left at 7 o'clock, P. M., on Sun¬

day, and Chattanooga on the noon of Monday.Rosecrans was then falling back on Caattanoo-ga, where he wae perfectly safe from all Br&egcould do. Hie line* of communication wereperfectly secure, and be had plenty of ammu¬nition and provisions in Chattanooga to etaada month's siege. The result is a defeat to us, as we have loet

tremendously in material, not lees than fiftypiece* of artillery falling into the bands of tbeenemy, though Bragg's army receipts tor twen-<y-The rebel loss in killed and wounded will ex¬

ceed our own. In killed, be lost doable oarnumber.Rosecrans was in no danger, bnt at tbe time

Mr. Shanks left Chattanooga, the danger CoBurnside was very imminent.
