From time to time you may hear that the Board of the Association operates in a fiduciary capacity for the homeowners. Or you may read about the Board’s fiduciary responsibility in the governing documents. Just exactly what does this mean?

Fiduciary duty simply means the Board has an ethical and legal obligation to make decisions in the best interests of the entire Association. That’s a small explanation for a very big responsibility.

Fiduciary duty includes a duty of loyalty to the Association, meaning that Board members should never use their position to take advantage of the Association. They should never make decisions for the Association that benefit themselves at the expense of the Association and its members.

Fiduciary duty also includes the duty to exercise ordinary care. This means Board members must perform their duties in good faith and in a manner they believe to be in the best interest of the Association, with such care as an ordinary prudent person in a similar position under similar circumstances would use.

In short, Boards must act in the best interests of the Association and act reasonably. Board members fulfill their fiduciary duty by:

Developing and using a formal budgeting process

Establishing and adhering to budgetary guidelines

Making sure the budgeting process reflects the wishes of the Association members

Promoting understanding and acceptance of the reserve accounts among the members

Collecting sufficient fees to adequately operate the Association

Soliciting bids and negotiating appropriate contracts

Authorizing expenditures

Several homeowners have recently submitted requests for renovation or remodeling plans for their homes and yards. Such improvements serve to enhance our home values and the beauty of our properties and the SGRCA overall.

When homeowners are selecting contractors and architects, the AC strongly recommends they thoroughly research those professionals by checking references and visiting job sites before entering into a contractual agreement. A great source of information is the Registrar of Contractors (ROC), which is responsible for regulating contractors and resolving complaints. The ROC can be contacted through their website at www.azroc.gov or by phone at 601-542-1521. Once again, the AC thanks you for everything you do to assure that the SGRCA remains a beautiful and inviting place to live.

Summer means heat, monsoon season and, regretfully, weeds. The wildflowers are fading, but they have not started to seed; it will be easier to control the weeds once the seeds begin to fall. It is difficult to spray or line cut in some areas without destroying the wildflower population.

We will be replacing dead trees and plants when the heat has subsided and will be spreading 106 tons of crushed red rock throughout the common areas. The work is to begin the middle of August with completion around the middle of September. The goal of our Committee is to evenly distribute our enhancement projects throughout the SGR Community.

COMMUNICATION COMMITTEE NEWS

The Committee has been busy at work planning the Annual Fall Mixer (see Community News) and first ever SGRCA Gold Tournament, finishing the Spring Newsletter and starting the Summer edition and welcoming new Homeowners – all within the scope of our Charter. If you have any ideas about the Newsletter or articles to be contained within its pages, please email those ideas to Lorrie Barksdale at HOAMCO, and she will forward them to us. Hope you enjoy receiving it either in hard copy or via email.

QUESTIONS ABOUT SYCAMORE TREES (and others)

Several months ago, a Homeowner had difficulty with the plumbing in his home due to root damage to the pipes. The 3 large trees very close to the home were the culprits. Trees planted too close to homes, i.e. foundations/driveways/walls, have the potential to seek water at its source – your pipes and irrigation lines. The roots that are sent out can damage foundations/driveways in their search. They wrap around the pipes and break them as well as grow into them, clogging them. In this case, Sycamore trees, which are beautiful, full shade trees, were the ones causing the damage. A good rule of thumb is that these trees should be 25 – 30 feet from homes or have a good alternate water source. If a tree(s) is getting enough water, the roots do not have to extend to search. If you have questions about trees in your yard, contact an arborist for assistance.

ARCHITECTURE TIP:

Keep in mind “When in doubt, fill it out,” if you are not sure if you need an Architectural Request Form.

LANDSCAPE TIP:

Check your drip system for animal damage and/or missing emitters.

COMMUNICATIONS TIP:

Be sure and get your Website login password from Lorrie Barksdale at HOAMCO and keep you profile information current.

Thanks to all the Homeowners who attended the Annual Meeting in April. There was a nice turn out to hear Gary Johnson, Sedona Fire Marshall, who spoke on Fire Safety and what Homeowners can do to protect themselves and their property from fiery devastation.

A new slate of Officers was elected to lead the SGRCA at the Organizational Meeting held after the Annual Meeting. I appreciate the opportunity to serve our Association and Community as President of the Board. In looking forward, I would like to share my goals for the year with the Board.

The first and overriding goal for all activity of the Board will be to maintain and enhance our property values through continued focus on the appearance and condition of the common areas and integrity of the Community by utilizing and enforcing the specifications in the CC&Rs, Rules and Regulations and the Design Guidelines.

In order to keep our Association members informed of Board activity and other situations affecting each of us, I will continue to focus on and expand communications to all parties regarding all aspects of the SGRCA.

When members know and recognize each other, it makes the Community stronger. In the recent past, the Fall Annual Mixer has been expanded, and a Newsletter was created. I will continue enhancing and expanding opportunities for accomplishing this with new and exciting activities for our member’s enjoyment.

I look forward to a good year, working with a great Board to enhance and expand the property values and camaraderie within the wonderful Community in which we live and play.

Sedona Golf Resort Community Association: Family ~ Friends ~ Neighbors

My name is Dingoh, and I’m your neighbor. Well, actually my owners, Bill & Maryann Agnew are your neighbors; they just keep me company. They were told that you’re not really considered a “local” until you have a dog so they rescued me from the reservation in Tuba City just so they could become locals. A lot of my friends bring their owners with them to Sedona which makes them instant locals.

Apparently living in the high desert near the wilderness and on a golf course is something owners do when they get a little “long-in-the tooth”. Works for me. The weather here is milder compared to what my walking friends from Michigan, Wisconsin, New York, and Minnesota have told me. Early morning walks on the golf course allow me to keep up with current events: “Kirkland dog food is just as good as Iams and Purina; the best treats are from Trader Joes; Sam & Sonny’s’ owners just bought a place in Colorado; there is a family of coyotes living in the arroyo near fairways 6 & 7; just got my rattlesnake shot for the season, they’re out and about now; shout out to 14 year old Petey, as he just adopted Sharon and Ed and will be joining the rest of us on the links.”

Pretty exciting stuff eh? The exciting stuff is in the wilderness. Bill likes to hike up in the canyons, and we buddy up so he can find his way home (he has trouble finding his glasses when he is HOME). I take him to out of the way places as a treat. I can swim; he can fiddle with his GPS trying to figure out where I’ve taken him - not to worry, I know the way back. Bill decided to write about me because I’m an easy interview (it only cost him 2 treats), and I was available. Bill & Gina Cassidy normally interview owners and residents for the SGRCA newsletter but are finding it difficult even when they offer them 3 treats. If you would like to receive a “Welcome Packet, “ contact my owner, Bill, at 928-301-4847 or Gina Cassidy at 928-284-4342. If you would like to be interviewed or have an idea for an article of interest please contact the Communications Committee at: www.sedonagolfresort.org.

COMMUNITY NEWS (continued from page 1)

We hope everyone in the Association will make plans to come out for a great buffet, visit with friends, participate in the putting contest (with a trophy) and enter the raffle for some great prizes. If you have a business, a creative streak, a talent or just want to be generous and want to be recognized (or anonymous), please consider donating a door prize. Some ideas are: an hour of computer instruction/service, a painting, drawing, ceramic or other art piece, a percentage off or 2 for 1 coupon to visit your establishment like a restaurant, boutique or other nifty spot, an hour of landscaping consult, photography or massage, bottles of wine, alteration certificate and the list is only limited by imagination and our members businesses and talents. Please contact Frances Hawley at [email protected] for information or to make a donation.

A FEW SHORT REMINDERS:

There has been increased coyote activity in the Crystal Sky Drive area, and one owner witnessed a pack of coyotes taking down and feeding on a deer. Please never feed or encourage any wild animals, including javelina, coyotes and bobcats, to approach. If they do move toward you, try to scare them off and make them feel uncomfortable around people. Always keep your pets on a leash when walking to protect them from wildlife, as this was their home first before we moved in on them.

The speed limit is 25 mph in the SGR Community. Many people are always out walking, jogging and walking their pets. Let’s keep everyone safe by obeying the speed limit.

It is against the law and the Association R&Rs to lease your home on a short-term basis (less than thirty days). It is now against the R&R’s to advertise a lease for less than 30 days.
