Dear reader,

The supermarkets are stocked up with mince pies, the kids are avariciously eyeing up the contents of the Argos catalogue and you’d rather listen to Cliff Richard’s Mistletoe and Wine in perpetuity than ever have to go late night shopping for Disney merchandise ever again. Yes, it can only be Christmas.

It may well be the most wonderful time of the year, but it can get pretty stressful for mums and dads, so luckily we’re on hand with all you need to keep the family entertained over the Christmas season.

In order to help your yuletide go with a bang, we’ve got the low down on the best Pantos on in Merseyside (oh no we haven’t!) and a comprehensive run-down of what’s on in Liverpool over the festive season. Closer to home, it’s time to dig out that tickling stick and

dust off those marigolds, because we’ll be looking at how you can get your home prepared for Christmas. And if you’re looking for ways to keep the kids entertained, you’ll love our make your own Christmas decoration feature - finally, an easy project for kids that doesn’t involve buying half an arts and crafts shop!

However, if you’ve come over all ‘bah humbug’ fear not, for it’s not all festive fun. We’ll also be looking at what you can do if, like Kate Middleton, you’re suffering from extreme morning sickness, and why learning a language is so useful for children. And of course, we’ve also got the usual bumper mix of competitions, vouchers, listings and reviews. What’s not to like?

Here’s to a happy Christmas, and a fantastic 2015

Best wishes, The Family Go Live team.

Outdoor play has seen a decline in recent years but a new nature movement is growing and more and more people are beginning to recognise how important it is for our children’s health and well-being.

We believe that the time spent within the natural environment enhances a person’s wellbeing and develops fundamental skills necessary for life-long learning.

For these reasons Nature to Nurture LTD has been created to spread the love for outdoor play by providing unique opportunities for families and educational services using the Forest School approach.

We are always looking for new and inspiring things to do outdoors and we will endeavour to creatively come up with ideas to help support a wide range of people. If you are interested in joining us outdoors for a session then why not give us a ring and we will see if we can tailor the session to meet your needs. So if you’re a school, nursery, home schooling group or an organisation that delivers services to children and are interested in what we do then please get in touch. All sessions are currently held in Croxteth Country Park.

Nature toNurture

Outdoor NurseryOur outdoor nursery aims is to deliver a curriculum that encompasses the Scandinavian model of Forest School, the Early Years Foundation Stage and enhanced by the Steiner Waldorf model, which looks to educate the heart and hands as well as the head. We want children to embark on a journey of discovery by being given the opportunity to participate in experiential hands on learning. We also believe that the outdoors helps engender the capacity for joyful learning and that free play in a natural environment supports children’s inborn desire to learn.

We know that the outdoors has a huge impact on health and wellbeing and we believe that by taking learning outdoors, we help children foster an appreciation, respect and care for nature, which will then deeply embedded in their lives.

One little hybrid phrase that’s been hitting the headlines of late is Hyperemesis Gravidarum - the form of acute morning sickness that mum-to-be Kate Middleton is suffering from.

We spoke to Dr James Nicopoullos, Consultant Gynaecologist and Subspecialist in Reproductive Medicine & Surgery at The Lister Hospital, London, who gave us the lowdown on what Hyperemesis is and how you can manage the symptoms.

So James, what is Hyperemesis Gravidarum? “In essence Hyperemesis is an extreme form of morning sickness. At least 50% of women suffer from some nausea and vomiting, but in only a small proportion does this become so severe that it leads to an inability to tolerate enough oral fluids to maintain hydration which can lead to dehydration and occasionally weight loss, imbalances in important electrolytes in the body (such as sodium and potassium) and poor nutrition.”

What are the key symptoms? “The dehydration can cause a rise in heart rate as the body tries to compensate, a drop in blood pressure and dizziness. The key symptoms always begin in the first trimester, most commonly at 6-8 weeks of pregnancy and they tend to resolve in the majority by week 14-16.”

Why do some women suffer, and not others? “The reason why some women suffer and others do not is poorly understood. It may be as a consequence of hormonal, mechanical and psychological factors. Early pregnancy hormone (hCG) stimulates the thyroid gland the level of hCG and thyroid hormones seem to correlate with the severity of symptoms in some but not all women. Pregnancy also naturally leads to certain mechanical changes that predispose to the symptoms so are exacerbating factors but unlikely to be the underlying cause (such as changes in pressure in the oesophagus and slower emptying of stomach contents).”

What should expectant mothers do if they have symptoms?“The most important factor is probably tackling the symptoms as early as possible when they are easier to deal with and before they have a chance to cause significant dehydration and any nutritional problems. It is therefore vital that women seek guidance from their GP or hospital sooner rather than later and that the medical practitioners have a good understanding of HG, how it can impact on couples and the treatment options.”

It’s undeniable that Brits lag behind our continental cousins when it comes to learning languages. While they’re happy conversing in a second, or even third tongue, we often have to psych ourselves up and consult Google translate to do so much as order a baguette.

If you want things to be different for your child, the key is to start early. We spoke to Sian Kilty, of Explore Learning, to find out more…

So Sian, what are the advantages of children starting to learn a second language while still young? “When children are young, they soak knowledge up like a sponge. My son is learning to talk, he is 2.5 years old and his understanding and communication skills in English astound me. This is key to understanding why children should learn languages at a young age. Look how many skills children learn in the first 4 years of their life (eating, communication, walking) the list is endless. Adding communicating in another language is easy for children.

“As we get older, we develop more anxiety and greater self-awareness, we are afraid to try new things. Children aren’t. It is their lack of self-criticism and ability to soak up new knowledge is the key reason why children should learn a new language when they are young.”

How can parents help their child learn a new language? “The main barriers are parents being afraid of communicating in a language perhaps they are not bilingual in, or perhaps being embarrassed.

“However, parents can help their child by learning just a few key phrases - just learning how to say ‘good morning’ in the new language can help. And of course, there are a wealth of apps available to help your child. Simply tuning into Dora the Explorer can help!

How can Let’s Learn language lessons help children? “At Let’s Learn they are exposed to a bilingual teacher delivering the majority of the session in the key language. Watching children trying to understand what’s being said and being asked is amazing. They learn quickly and get used to what is required of them, and are soon singing songs with their peers and playing fun games. Children get to learn from each other too!”

It’s never too

early to learn

a language

Giving your kids a little too much help with their homework? You’re not alone…

New research by a money saving website in the UK has uncovered that 23% of British parents admit to doing their children’s homework for them, while 61% will regularly help their child with their studies.

Once all of the results were collated, they showed that the average primary/junior school child takes home 4 pieces of homework per week, whilst the average child in secondary school tends to take home, on average, 12

pieces of homework per week. 61% of the parents polled admitted to helping their children with homework, whilst 23% admitted to having previously done their child’s homework for them, without any input from their child.

And the older the child, the more likely parents are to be tempted to help just a little too much. Of those who had previously done their child’s homework for them, 57% said their youngster was in secondary school. When asked why they had done their child’s homework for them, 41% said it was because the task was ‘too difficult’ for their child, whilst 36% said that they had ‘too much other homework to do’.

Parent Review

Sarah Gleave, mum to 10 month old Lucas, tells us why she loves Water Babies…

“My 10 month old son Lucas and I have been going to Water Babies classes every Monday since he was 10 weeks old. As a very competent swimmer myself, getting Lucas into the water was very important. We are very privileged to have Alison as our teacher, who is also the owner of Water Babies Liverpool. Alison has been fantastic from day one and the level of professionalism and teaching is far better than I could have ever imagined.

“As a competent swimmer myself I really wanted to transfer this to Lucas. Attending weekly Water Babies classes has enabled me to do this. It’s a great bonding experience and he gets to socialise with the other babies in the class every week. Our classes are always very active and we are introduced to new water skills throughout each course that we practise each week.”

All the skills are so important as they promote water safety and confi dence. Some of the skills include jumping in, surfi ng on a bubba fl oat, chasing fi sh, catching them with our hands and holding on to the side. One of our favourite skills though is swimming under water. Lucas now knows to hold his breath every time I say “Lucas ready go” just before we do an underwater swim.

Each course, we have practised this skill in different ways and we have now progressed to underwater glides together, all under the watchful eye of our fab teacher. It has been so lovely to see our son’s confi dence grow each week and for him to enjoy the water so much.

I would highly recommend Water Babies to every parent. It is such a wonderful skill to be able to share with your child. We even have a fabulous underwater photo of Lucas we can treasure forever too.

Thank you Water Babies!

Looking for an activity with a difference for your kids? You can’t go far wrong with rock climbing. And thanks to great new indoor climbing centres such as Awesome Walls, there’s no need to head out to the hills either. We take a look at how you can inspire your own little intrepid adventurers…

What are the physical benefits of rock climbing? It might not look like it burns many calories, but rock climbing is a pretty good workout, requiring co-ordination, strength, and flexibility. It’s great for upper and lower body strength too.

Benefits for parents?Climbing is a relatively low cost hobby as equipment is usually provided and there’s no need for a long term commitment. And because it’s an indoor activity, it’s a little more enjoyable than a wet Wednesday on a football pitch.

Dave Douglas Managing Director of Awesome Walls Climbing Centres Ltd said “We have been running climbing clubs and courses for children over 16 years and can safely say that no other sport comes close to climbing for a fun, active sport to follow! Birthday Parties have given many a child their first step/pull into an exciting vertical world that’s led onto greater things.”

RestaurantReview

The Ying Wah in Woolton Village provided the perfect venue for dinner with a friend on a windy winter’s evening. One of the city’s most well established Chinese restaurants, the Ying Wah has been around for 30 years and with its warm and friendly atmosphere, it was easy to see why the restaurant has stood the test of time. We were impressed by the menu, which included all the traditional dishes you would expect to see at a good Chinese restaurant.

After some discussion about whether to go for one of the fi ve set banquets, which looked excellent value, we opted to share a couple of starters and a couple of mains. We chose Salt and Pepper King Prawn and Chicken Skewers in a Satay Sauce. Both were delicious and had just the right spicy kick to whet our appetites. We opted for King Prawn King

Po and Chicken in Oyster Sauce for our main course and we were not disappointed. Both dishes came with a side of rice and they were cooked to perfection. Feeling rather satisfi ed, we talked about returning as a bigger group to celebrate my friend’s birthday. We mentioned this to our host for the evening, who was keen to point out the recently extended space upstairs, which can seat large groups together. It was a great space, seating around 70 in total. He told us that tables can be reserved either for small groups or the whole room could be hired out for birthday parties, christenings and even weddings. All in all it, we had a lovely evening and I’m looking forward to returning soon. I may even pop in for a take away before my friend’s birthday comes round!

Christmas

Hotspots

Christmas can sometimes seem like one overwhelming rush. So we’ve whittled it down to a round-up of the best festive hotspots around the city…

For Christmas, you’ve got to buy in bulk! Costco is the go-to place for stocking up on those all-important toys, gadgets, furniture, food and cakes. You can have all your shopping done quickly in one swoop!

But amid all the purchases, there are theatre shows and pantomimes going on across the city: Jack and the Beanstalk at The Epstein and also at St Helens Theatre Royal, Snow White at The Brindley, Radio City Christmas at Echo Arena, ‘Father Christmas Needs A Wee’ at Floral Pavilion, Little Red Riding Hood at The Everyman, and Cinderella at Knowsley Leisure Park. So there’s plenty to get the whole family in the Christmas spirit!

And after all the excitement of the various shows and activities, you’re going to be hungry! In the Woolton area, you’ve got great Indian and Chinese restaurants: Holdi and Ying Wah! If you’re in the city centre, Sapporo Japanese is a favourite amongst the locals.

And if you’re searching for a place to take the kids, Tavern Co on Smithdown Road is one of the highest recommended - breakfast, lunch or dinner, everyone is catered for in this cool, cosy, and candle-lit haven.

Christmas

diet tips

Sick of waddling into January every year, counting your chins and gazing forlornly at your skinny jeans, which fi tted no problem at the end of November? The easiest way to ensure this doesn’t happen to you in 2015 is to stop the rot before it even starts. Here’s our top tips for staying healthy over Christmas.

Step away from the buffetNothing says Christmas like a table groaning under the weight of mince pies, cakes and pigs-in-blankets and resisting temptation is never easy.

Eating before you attend a party can help you eat less (or mean double dinners, depending on your willpower and the elasticity of your waist band). Making good food choices will also lead to calorie savings, so swap that mini-sausage roll for sushi roll, and that creamy dip for salsa.

Alcohol - choose wiselyTis the season to be merry, but make too merry and the only thing you’ll be nursing in January is a carton of Slimfast. Again, the key here is not denial, but to choose wisely. Rather than, say, a large glass of wine (250) calories, try a spirit and diet mixer (55 calories) instead. Alternating your drinks with water will not only help you to keep the calorie count down, it’s also cheaper and better for your health too.

Don’t stop exercising The run-up to Christmas is a busy time, and it’s tempting to cut back on those non-mission-critical gym sessions and workout classes. If this is the case with you, why not try a brisk walk every evening as an alternative, or downloading a workout app that will let you fi t in workouts to suit your schedule? And if all that fails, take heart in the fact that the average shopping trip can burn a whopping 365 calories - something that will make trawling along Church Street that little bit more worthwhile.

The big day Tempting as it is to have a Christmas day blowout, it’s easy to avoid putting yourself into a carb coma for Boxing Day. Fill up on vegetables and try and nab the breast of the turkey as it’s the leanest part. Roast potatoes in olive oil rather than goose fat, and cut potatoes into large pieces rather than smaller ones - they’ll absorb less fat.

Planning a

winter birthday

party - Dos and

dont’s!

Throwing a winter birthday party in your home? Here’s our top tips on how to make it go with a bang.Don’t invite too many peopleOne downside of hosting a party at home, rather than in a hired venue such as a church hall, is that unless we’re treated to some very un-British winter weather this year, you won’t have the back garden for children to play in. This will mean space - and therefore the guest list - is likely to be limited.

Remember that very young children will probably come along with their parents too, so make sure there’s enough room for the grown-ups.

Do get the invites out early. If your child’s party is over the busy Christmas period, the sooner you get the invite out, the better. Probably the easiest way for people to RSVP is via email. Remember to ask if children have any specific dietary requirements too. That will allow you to ensure all little partygoers can be catered for.

Do think about shoes and boots Nobody wants 30 pairs of muddy winter shoes marauding through their home, so have a shoes off policy at the door. Buying some cheap shoe racks and labels will help keep things orderly and prevent Ella going home in Lily-Mae’s shoes.

Don’t forget the entertainment While putting a bouncy castle in your lounge may not be feasible, you can still put on entertainment in your home. Try www.paramountparties.org, who have a range of character mascots such as Mickey and Minnie, Buzz Lightyear and Hello Kitty available to come and pay a visit to your party.

Do put valuables away The clumsy hands of kid’s high on e-numbers and valuables simply don’t mix - make sure the iPad and any family heirlooms are well out of reach.

What makes Yellow Sub so special? The Yellow Sub is located in the heart of Liverpool right on the banks of the River Mersey. It is a very unique safe, clean and bright play centre, which has a lot of fun play equipment suitable for children of all ages. Why should I book my party at Yellow Sub?The Yellow Sub is able to provide a fun and playful child friendly environment where children can enjoy a party with their friends. Not only that but we accommodate for many special requirements for example, Halal, Kosher and gluten free.

How do I book my party? There are two ways to book a party, either in person or over the phone Tel: 08444 120 850. A £75 nonrefundable deposit is required and payment may be made by cash or credit/debit card.

What is included in a Yellow Sub Party and how much does it cost? There were 6 different types of party to choose which are tailored to suit the all ages.Parties start at 10.30am, 13.00pm and 15.30pm. All parties are up to 1hr 45 minutes except Astro Gamers, Private Hire at 18.30pm.

What age are your parties suitable for?Parties are suitable from toddler-age to 12 years old.

“Harry and I had been to a party at Yellow Sub before and had a fantastic time, when I spoke to my friend, Sally, she said she had booked the Cargo Cruisers party although the party, was amazing it was a bit out of my price range. However, when I called the Yellow Sub reception team they suggested their brand new £99 party deal, which was truly a Godsend. Harry was able to have his party and I wasn’t out of pocket. I am a single Mum and parties can be a bit stressful but the Yellow sub party team managed to make the day fl ow without any hiccups.

I also liked the fact that I was allowed to bring Harry’s birthday cake, which I had made especially for him, as from my experience most places make you buy their cakes.

Harry’s 8th birthday party went down a storm not only did he get to invite 10 of his closest buddies but they also got to take home sweet cones as well! Yellow Sub has all the answers to the perfect party no matter what your budget and requirements are.”

PartyTestimonial

My son held his party at Chill Factore, Manchester’s indoor real snow centre, last weekend – and wow! What a party he had!If you’re a newbie to indoor snow, what can you expect? Well, as you walk inside you’ll fi nd yourself transported to an authentic alpine village, complete with specialist shops, bars, restaurants and cafes over two fl oors.

There is an indoor climbing wall for intrepid youngsters and plenty of viewing windows to watch the snow action with a hot chocolate if that is what you prefer (as I do!)

The slope at 180m in length is the longest indoor real snow slope – it’s impressive. We were met by our Party Host at the desk and taken into the Changing Village to get kitted up – boots and helmets are free and I rented jackets and waterproof trousers although you can take your own; ours were still packed away for summer.

The boys couldn’t wait to get their kit on and have some fun!

After a briefi ng they were off! I watched Alex and his friend enjoy the thrills of the 60m long Luge ice slide, the only one of its kind in the UK! They said it was fast and exciting. As well as that, they did some good old

traditional sledging, racing each other on the slope and tubing, which is whizzing and spinning down the snow in an infl atable rubber ring.

They had such a giggle and kept going back for more until they had really rosy cheeks and by the end they were well and truly ready for some pizza!

I think there is defi nitely something for everyone at Chill Factore and the parties cater for all ages. You can enjoy a good hour of exciting activities, followed by party food and drinks in the Eiger party room – we booked the supreme menu with bigger portions for hungry kids and a choice of food.

Parties for little ones are in the snow play area, while older kids can get a thrill from the more exhilarating options. We had such a good time that the boys want to go back to try airboarding which sounds fast and fun, swooping down the snow slope on infl atable boards – not for the faint hearted!
