For many women, it seems like they spend most of their teens and twenties trying not to get pregnant, and most of their thirties desperately praying for a missed period, as conception proves more difficult than they ever imagined. And even if you conceived easily with your first child, things can often be more difficult second time round, especially if you left your first pregnancy until later in life.

Asked about how common infertility problems are, Valentine Akande, fertility expert at Spire Hospital comments: “Around one in six couples have difficulty conceiving and the reasons for fertility problems vary – common causes in women include lack of regular ovulation (the monthly release of an egg), blockage of the fallopian tubes and endometriosis, although in 25-30% of cases the cause is unexplained. In men, the most common cause is poor quality of semen.”

There are, however, several things you can do to maximise the chance of conception:

Know your cycleThe average menstrual cycle is 28 days, during which there is a limited window of approximately six days, where a woman is most fertile. Ovulation (release of the egg) occurs around day 14 when the egg is produced.

The best time to get pregnant is to have intercourse 2 days before ovulation at around the time cervical (fertile) mucus is produced.

Maintain a healthy weight and eat a balanced dietThe importance of maintaining a healthy weight cannot be over emphasised. For women, that is measured by having a body mass index (BMI) between 18.5 and 30. Being underweight is just as damaging as being overweight. The ideal BMI is between 20 and 25.

Exercise moderatelyAs well as keeping you fit and healthy, exercise is a good way to reduce stress levels. However, some studies have suggested that excessive and intensive exercise can reduce your fertility.

Cut out toxins such as alcohol and smoking Official advice issued by the Department of Health is that women trying to conceive should avoid alcohol altogether. Alcohol can also reduce libido in the male and excessive consumption can affect sperm quality. Smoking is an absolute no, as even exposure to smoke can reduce your fertility by up to half.

If you’ve tried all these things, and are still not conceiving, it may be time to seek professional help. Depending on the problems you are having, treatments available may include surgical procedures, such as treatment for endometriosis or blocked tubes, or assisted conception, such as intrauterine insemination (IUI) or in-vitro fertilisation (IVF)

You’re on maternity leave, your overnight bag is packed and the neighbours are on stand-by to look after the cat while

you’re in hospital. But when your due date comes and goes without so much a hint

of a contraction, what can you do?

Getting frustrated is understandable, especially as the latter stages of pregnancy can be so uncomfortable, but new research shows that more mums to be are taking matters into their own hands by trying various methods to try and kickstart labour.

A new survey by care.com has revealed the most popular way of encouraging labour to begin was to eat a hot and spicy curry, with 78% of respondents saying that they’d headed down to their local Indian takeaway in attempt to stimulate contractions. The next most popular approach was having sex with their partner, with 65% of woman trying this. A further 39% reported that they ate a whole pineapple in an attempt to get labour started. Other strategies included bouncing on trampolines and going on very long walks. Although many of these methods may sounds like old wives tales, they do have some basis in scientific fact. For example, spicy food such as

curry is thought to stimulate the tummy, which may help kickstart the uterus into action, and pineapple is rich in the enzyme bromelain, which is thought to help soften your cervix and bring on labour. Similarly, walking means that the baby’s head will pressing down on your cervix, which could stimulate the release of oxytocin, a hormone which causes contractions.

Many women also swear by the effectiveness of acupuncture, or of herbal and homeopathic remedies, such as taking pulsatilla extract or blue or black cohosh. However, caution should be exercised and you should always seek advice from your doctor or midwife before trying anything vaguely invasive.

Psychologist Dr Amanda Gummer commented:

“I’m not surprised that women reported a wide range of approaches to try and encourage the speedy arrival of their babies. Many will question whether these activities actually work but debating whether they are myth or urban legend isn’t the point. For most women, I don’t think it matters what they do – anything is good because they are distracting themselves and have something purposeful to do whilst waiting for their baby to arrive.”

While the phrase ‘private tuition’ may conjure up images of little Tabitha being hot-housed in algebra, courtesy of mum and dad’s capacious bank balance, it seems that more and more of us are turning to private tuition for our children.

It used to be the reserve of only very wealthy parents – with a definite whiff of ‘keeping up with the Joneses’ - but new research reveals that private tuition is becoming popular with parents from all walks of life.

According to the Sutton Trust, just 18% of UK children received private tuition in 2005 but by 2011-12 this had increased to 23%. And in London a whopping 38% of children now receive private tuition.

But why are so many parents convinced that their child needs extra help? New research by the University of Reading and Explore Learning showed that many parents felt that their children’s schools were ‘a disappointment’ and that it was their responsibility to try and ‘make up the difference’ when they felt that their child wasn’t being taught adequately at school.

However, the research also showed that parents weren’t just interested in improving their child’s academic attainment, but also in enhancing their confidence. Dr Ellie Francis-Brophy from the Institute of Education at the University of Reading says: “Many parents described the extra tuition as helping their child shift from a disposition of ‘helplessness’ to greater self-belief and confidence.”

When asked about the reasons why parents pay for private tutoring Verity from Active TT, added: “Parents may not be able to provide homework help across the entire curriculum: they may not have the academic ability themselves, or there may be language barriers, or general time constraints. By having private tuition come and help support the child in their current education goals, it relieves the burden.”

Private tuition: Is it just about improving confidence?

The benefits of introducing a child to a musical instrument are well documented, but if you’re hoping to encourage the development of your child’s pint-sized Paganini or miniature Mozart, there’s a few things to mull over first. We take a look at the things you need to think about when choosing your child’s first musical instrument:

Listen to your child Your child is much more likely to stick at an instrument they already have a passion for, so listen to your son or daughter. If you always hoped they’d play the flute but you’ve noticed them looking longingly at electric guitars, it’s their opinion that should count.

Try out a few different instruments Even if your child is fairly set on what sort of instrument they’d like to play, it’s worth exploring the other options too. Visit a large music store, where the staff will be on hand to help you try out a range of instruments, and give you their expert opinion on which one might be right for your child.

Consider your child’s build Your child may have always harboured a deep longing to be a double bass player, but if they can barely see over the top of it then it may not be the right instrument for them. Similarly, smaller hands can make playing some instruments

harder for some children. If this applies in your child’s case, why not consider starting them on a similar, but smaller instrument so they can perfect their techniques and move onto their first choice of instrument at a later date, e.g. substituting a cello for a double bass, or a clarinet for an alto sax.

Think about renting an instrumentSadly, many children rapidly lose interest in playing a musical instrument. So instead of spending a few hundred pounds on a violin or guitar, it may be worth considering renting one out from a music store or even your child’s school initially.

If your child is clumsy, or a little behind their peers, they’re probably just developing at their own rate. However for some children, this can be a symptom of dyspraxia. The term comes from the Greek word ‘praxis’, which means ‘doing, acting’. And as you might expect, it is ‘doing and acting’ that children with dyspraxia find most challenging, which is perhaps why the condition used to be referred to as ‘clumsy child syndrome’.

Though little known when compared with conditions such as dyslexia, dyspraxia is thought to affect up to one in 30 children, with boys four more likely to be affected than girls.

Usually, if your child has dyspraxia, there will have been telltale signs from birth. Babies with dyspraxia will often be irritable and slow to achieve key milestones such as sitting independently. Many will be completely by-pass the crawling stage, preferring to ‘bottom shuffle’ and then walk. Eating and drinking will also be difficult, and these children will often be labelled as ‘messy eaters’.

Once at school, things will often get worse for the child with dyspraxia. By seven, the condition will be affecting how a child performs in the classroom, and these children will usually be slow to complete school work. Often, they’ll have poor handwriting and drawing skills and struggle

Dyspraxia: Why your ‘clumsy

child’ may need help

in PE lessons. Speech and language problems may also become apparent at this stage.Because many of the symptoms of dyspraxia can be mistaken for a child simply being a little ‘slow’ or simply not trying hard, children with dyspraxia are often labelled as lazy, clumsy or just plain naughty, leading to frustration and disenchantment with the education system. Timely and proper diagnosis, then, is key to ensuring that your child receives the help they deserve.

If you suspect your child may have dyspraxia you should consult your GP, who should refer you to an educational or clinical psychologist, occupational therapist or speech therapist. Because awareness of dyspraxia is still low even within the medical profession, you may have to be very persistent. You may find it helps to keep a log of all the symptoms your child is exhibiting, and take this with you when you go to see your GP.

While there is no cure for dyspraxia, receiving a medical diagnosis for their so-called ‘clumsy behaviour’ is often hugely beneficial for a child’s self-esteem, and specialists will be able to suggest strategies and even special equipment that will help your child better cope with his dyspraxia and limit the impact the condition has on his or her future progress.

Parent Review

I took my 4 year old son Reece to

Kidilates classes firstly, to improve

his co-ordination and balance and

also as an introduction to a new

hobby. He is currently in his third

set of classes and is so enthusiastic

about going each week - he absolutely loves it!

His favourite move is the “Superman” which he performs on

a regular basis, either at home or in

family or friend’s houses. Whilst on a

recent holiday in Portugal, he chose

to practice his Kidilates moves in

the park instead of playing on the

swings.

Reece also teaches our 2 year old

son what he has learnt each week

and they have great fun practicing

together.

I have noticed a huge difference in

Reece’s confidence and social skills

since attending Kidilates and he will

now get involved in lots of different

activities. I also feel his co-ordination, movement and balance have improved massively.

Kidilates is a great idea, it encourages exercise and movement

and improves posture and balance.

It’s also a great place to meet other

children and have lots of fun.

While yoga may be have previously seen as a form of exercise that was more suited to adults, more and more yoga classes for children are springing up.

And it seems that this is far from a fad. A study by California State University found that yoga “improved students’ behavior, physical health and academic performance, as well as attitudes toward themselves”, while similar research from Leipzig University concludes that yoga can be particularly useful to children who exhibit aggressive behaviour, or who have special needs.

So should your child be grabbing an exercise mat and striking up a downward dog? We take a look at the benefits of doing yoga as a child:

Enhances flexibility and strengthYoga positions will enable your child to build up their flexibility and strength, meaning they’re less likely to get injured when indulging in more physical sports.

Improves concentrationYoung children are renowned for being fidgety, but it is thought that yoga can help children develop their concentration span as they learn to focus on perfecting the various moves in silence.

Helps children to relax While we may not think that young children need to unwind, academic pressure and constant beeping of smartphones and iPads means that many kids find it difficult to switch off.

Yoga can help children to learn the breathing techniques and poses that will help them relax when they feel things are getting on top of them.

Perfect for non-sporty kidsWhile competitive sports such as netball are important in helping your child to build relationships and understand the importance of team work, they’re not for everyone. If your child isn’t a naturally sporty type, yoga is a great way to help them keep fit without putting them through the stress of being picked last for the football team.

All say ‘ommmmmm’: Yoga for kids

Get moving: Choosing a dance class for your childIf your child is busting a groove as they bop along to In the Night Garden, or doing a Michael Flatley impression as they sit in their pushchair, it could be that they’re ready to start dance classes.

While these used to be the preserve of older children, kids are starting at ever younger ages, with the options for pre-schoolers growing year-on-year. And while it used to be limited to the traditional ballet, tap and modern, there’s now a range of dance classes from street dance to Irish dancing available, meaning there’s something to suit every child.

Once you’ve decided you want your child to attend dance classes, it’s worth considering what you want your child to get out of it.

If you just see dance classes as a sociable way for your child to get some exercise and enjoy themselves, then you’ll probably want to choose a provider where the focus is on fun. Alternatively, if you’re interested in your child becoming more involved in the world of dance as they get older, you may want to choose a class that follows a formal syllabus, provides regular assessments of your child’s progress, and what they can do to improve, or which leads up to taking formal examinations.

If this structured approach is important to you, it may also be worth looking into the qualifications of the dance class provider, and checking that the class leaders have been certified by an organisation such as the British Ballet Organisation (BBO) or the Royal Academy of Dance (RAD).

Restaurant Review

The legendary breakfasts at The Tavern Co on Smithdown Road have been a long-standing institution in South Liverpool for as long as I can remember. Until recently, the delicious brunch menu has been reserved solely for a weekend treat, but the good news is that the Tavern is now serving brunch every day of the week.

I chose a Monday morning to join some friends at the Tavern Co for a long lazy brunch. Having met at antenatal classes more than three years ago, it’s very rare we ever manage to find a space big enough, or welcoming enough, to catch up for a coffee these days with our toddlers in tow, never mind enjoying brunch together!

And we could not have asked for a better welcome than the one we were given at The Tavern Co. As soon as we arrived at the spacious Mexican themed restaurant, our little ones were shown a treasure chest of toys in the corner, where they happily played until our food arrived.

We were seated at a large booth near the window, where we had a good chance to catch up, as the tea and coffee started flowing, the brunch menu includes unlimited refills.

I was surprised to see the place so full on a Monday morning but once our food arrived, it was easy to see why. I chose pancakes, drenched in maple syrup, while the others went for more savoury options, a full English Breakfast, which looked pretty impressive and an omelette, which was made to suit.

The kids enjoyed everything from sausage and beans and scrambled egg on toast to blueberry pancakes, which went down a treat. They were also given some colouring pencils and crayons to keep them occupied at the table.

It was great to see a place so accommodating towards children. Our waiter told us that there are regular activities taking place for little ones over the weekend, from face-painting and story-telling to balloon modelling and drawing at the back of the restaurant.

We left feeling full and rather pleased that we had finally

found somewhere so appealing to meet up with the kids.

It was spacious, relaxed and welcoming. And the brunch

menu runs until 2.30pm every day so there is plenty of time

to work up an appetite first.

Restaurant Review

After a busy Sunday morning of shopping in Liverpool City Centre, my friend and I decided to stop for a much needed bite to eat. After throwing a few different ideas back and forth, we agreed on NoLita Cantina, a restaurant I’d been very keen to try since it opened its doors earlier this year.

Situated on bustling Bold Street, the small and cosy restaurant was busier than expected for a Sunday afternoon. A waitress quickly acknowledged us and led us to a table for two in front of the impressive wooden bar. Handing us a couple of menus, she took our drinks orders then left us to peruse the selection of American inspired dishes they have on offer.

The extensive Starter Menu is made up of several homemade American indulgences, each one sounding as mouth-watering as the next. Unable to pick just one, we decided to go for the ‘Sharing Platter for Two’ (£8.95), this way we’d get to sample smaller portions of most of the dishes from the starter menu. It wasn’t long before we were served our mini corn dogs, deliciously crispy onion rings, chicken wings, deep-fried dill pickles, and corn on the cob smothered in chilli butter. The tasty nibbles all came in a quirky metal camping-style tin, and we were each given small tin side plates. We we’re also asked if we would like to select two dips, so we chose a pot of sour cream and a pot of the NoLita sauce, which both complimented our starters perfectly.

For the next course, I decided to go for the Pulled Pork with grilled Monterey Jack Cheese and Chipotle Mayonnaise, (£7.50) and my friend opted for the Double stack burger topped with pulled pork, glazed apple slice, Monterey Jack cheese and Dr Pepper BBQ sauce, with fries on the side (£10.95).

When the sandwich and burger arrived, the smell of succulent pulled pork had us ready to dive straight in. They certainty don’t disappoint, with each of us keen to finish the huge portions on our plates. The pulled pork sandwich was delicious, tender meat layered on oozing grilled cheese, and with just the right amount of mayonnaise. The double stack burger was equally as tempting and the fries are a mixture of potato and sweet potato fries, which added a nice twist.

We both really enjoyed our first visit to NoLita Cantina and plan to return again very soon, hopefully with enough room left to try of the home-made desserts!

Bathroom restorationReplacing a bathroom can be a costly business, so if you’re thinking of buying a new suite, it may be worth considering if you really need a new one, or if your existing one just needs a little TLC.

Restoring a bathroom involves refreshing or replacing grout, silicone, taps, shower screens bath panels and flooring in order to have it looking like new again.

It can also help keep your bathroom looking great for longer if anti-mould and limescale treatments are added to glass, metal and bathroom surfaces. It costs just a fraction of buying a new bathroom, and can extend the life of the fixtures of the room by over 10 years.

If you’ve had cosmetic surgery or a beauty treatment that’s been botched, it

can be difficult to know who to turn to. We speak to Tracy Thompson of Paul

Crowley & Co about cosmetic surgery disasters, and what you can do if a

procedure has wrong...

Is this problem on the increase? Why do you think that might be if so? The problem is most certainly on the increase. Because of the demand for the more aesthetic treatments, the number of providers has grown exponentially. Unfortunately, as many of these procedures are non-surgical, the area is largely unregulated. This gives rise to unscrupulous providers using untrained or incompetent staff to carry out procedures, or cutting corners.

What sort of compensation might you expect to receive if you sue? Could you give an example?

Amounts of damages awarded to victims of botched cosmetic surgery can vary greatly from case to case, depending on the circumstances and the effects upon the client. Until a solicitor has had sight of medical evidence it is difficult to estimate the amount which would be awarded. However, by way of example, in 2012 a former rugby player was awarded £26,000.00 in damages after a privately-paid nose operation left him with a permanent and significant scar on the tip of his nose.

What should you do if your cosmetic surgery has been botched? If you feel that you have received negligent treatment before, during or after a cosmetic procedure, you should contact Paul Crowley & Co. One of our specialist clinical negligence solicitors will be happy to arrange a free no-obligation consultation to consider the circumstances of your treatment and assess whether or not you have a case.

Advetorial Losing weight the

Herbalife wayIf the ice-cold beers, sangria, picnics and paellas of the holiday season have left you waddling into autumn nursing a double chin and looking forlornly at clothes that no longer fit you, fret not. We take a look at the increasingly popular Herbalife diet, which could have you back in those skinny jeans in no time!

What is Herbalife? Perfect for those with a busy lifestyle, Herbalife is one of the leading meal-replacement shakes in the world.

What is in Herbalife shakes? Each Herbalife shake is calorie controlled. For example, their Formula 1 (F1) shakes are just 220 kcal per serving, and yet are rich in protein and soy, making them a great choice for those who want exercise to be a key part of their weightloss plan.

The shakes are available in eight different flavours, including cookies and cream, cappuccino and tropical fruit. There is also a an F1 Free From range, with shakes that are free from lactose, soy and gluten when made according to instructions.

How do you make the shakes? Making the shakes is as simple as making a cup of tea. You just mix two tablespoons of powder (approximately 26 grams), with 250 mls of milk. Then you can either drink them then or take them into work in a flask!

How can you use the shakes? If you are using the shakes as part of a weightloss plan, you can replace two meals per day with the shake, and eat one healthy, nutritionally-balanced meal. Alternatively, if you are trying to maintain your weight or simply ensure that you are getting the nutrition you need, you can just replace one meal per day with an F1 shake, and eat two nutritionally balanced meals.

Does it work? As with any diet, the key to it working is sticking to it! Clinical studies show that using meal-replacement shakes as part of a calorie-controlled diet can be very effective in helping to manage weight, especially when combined with moderate exercise. Many users also report that because the diet is so simple and easy-to-follow, they’re less likely to make the sort of bad choices that might knock them off track.

Most of us can still remember the anguish caused by teenage acne. Staring forlornly into the mirror at the veritable zit convention taking place on your face is unlikely to rank as a highlight of our teenage years.

But for many of us, these pesky pustules didn’t disappear along with our love of buying ‘Now’ compilations and drinking White Lightening in our local park, and adult acne remains a problem for many people. So what exactly is acne, and what can be done to prevent it?

Acne is caused when the sebaceous glands create too much of an oily substance called sebum. Though necessary to lubricate the hair and skin, and prevent it from drying out, too much sebum will lead to hair follicles becoming ‘plugged’ with both sebum and dead skin cells, creating a spot.

Contrary to popular belief, acne is not caused by a poor diet, or by poor skin hygiene. Because most of the biological reactions that lead to acne take place under the skin’s surface, how often you wash it is unlikely to have an impact.

If you suffer from acne, it may be worth paying a visit to beauty specialist The White Rooms, They stock a full line of medically tested products proven to reduce and control acne bacteria including cleansers, topical lotions and 100 % mineral makeup “Young Blood” that completely covers acne, scarring and pigmentation.
