Sandi Gorin's Pottenger's Station Notes: Sarah B. Smith, Historic Nelson County, Its Towns and People, Bardstown,KY, 1983.

Capt. Samuel Pottenger (1754-1831) was the founder of Pottenger's Station (Nelson Co) in 1781 and stated that he,his eldest daughter (Mrs. James Phillips who was born at the fort in 1783) lived at Cox's Station many years. Theorphan children of Robert & Elizabeth Willett Pottenger of Prince Georges Co., Md. - Elizabeth, Jemima, Susannah,Anne and Eunice came to KY in 1783. The fort was located a mile north of Gethsemane Postoffice and 5/8ths of amile south of Abbey of Gethesame in southern Nelson Co. Samuel was born April 29, 1754 in Prince Georges Countyand came to Kentucky in 1776. He served in the Revolutionary War in Maryland in 1777, was with James Harrod in1778, to Wm. Harrod's company in 1780 and died Jan 20, 1831. Pottenger built a house in 1788 about 2 miles eastof the station. He is buried in Cox Creek Baptist Cemetary, 5 miles from Bardstown The following individuals wereguaranteed to be living at Pottenger's Station thanks to family records which were preserved - none of which wereknown as hunters and landseekers. Most of them stayed in the area with a few moving to the Great Miami valley inButler and Preble Counties, Ohio. By 1782-83's winter, there were 37 people from the Samuel Cartwright Stationdiscovered starving by Pottenger and George Rogers Clark. A list of inmates (no explanation given) who came fromPennsylvania: Charles Masterson, John Masterson, John Masterson Jr., Thomas Masterson, William Masterson,William Masterson Jr., Hugh Masterson, Hugh Masterson Jr., Jerry Masterson and Zachariah Masterson. Withthem came Jacob Mueller (Miller) who had married in PA Elizabeth Masterson, a sister of the elder Masterson'sabove. They had several children born at the station including Abraham, Rebecca, Roy, David, and Amos Miller.Note: Married land renters in PA were called inmates.
