Message From the Publisher

Ah! Summer! Finally some down time for the kids! This is what they dream of all year long. Me on the

other hand, I am panicking! I am sure I am not alone when I say summer can be the most challenging juggle act for a parent. If you are working outside the home, you need care and entertainment for your children. There are so many possibilities! Are they independent enough to be home alone all day? Should they be in summer camp? Half day, full day? Stay with grandparents? Will they be bored? Can you afford it? You try to make the decision that is best for your child, yet leaves you the most guilt free.

If you are in my shoes and you mostly work from home, well that’s an entirely unique chaos! Parents working from home is a growing trend. During the school year, daily structure is simple. You have 6 hours a day to be productive. In the summer, we are pulled in so many different directions. Your head knows you need to put the time in and get the work done. Your heart knows that summer will be gone before you know it and your kids should come first. In this issue, you will find tidbits and tips that may help you “keep your cool” over the next couple of months. Check out our summer camp pages and the tips on how to keep some struc-ture in this crazy time of year. I look forward to hearing about all of your ideas for family fun this summer. Visit our Facebook Page and share what you are doing to keep sane and still keep your kids happy. Personally, I am looking forward to family BBQ’s, campfire stories and lots of nothing!Susana Medeiros [email protected] 647-407-5540

Summer Camp... READY... or NOT?

It can be a most wonderful time of the year... Summer means that school is over! No more homework or waking up early. Many

families struggle with how to occupy their children’s time. Children themselves will com-plain of being bored. The novelty of no school can wear off after a few days. There is such a thing as too much unstructured time. Some families look for camp opportunities for their children. Camps can allow children to explore their interests, build social and life skills, and make friends. Camps are not for all children. Consider the following when explor-ing camp opportunities: What are your child’s interests? What experiences has your child previously enjoyed? Is your child self-directed (i.e., finds age-appropriate and healthy things to do fairly easily) or does your child need routine and structure? How much stimulation does your child need? What time over the summer will they have with neighbourhood friends and family members? Family outings are important too. For children who have a hard time making friends, camps provide a natural meeting place for same-aged peers under adult supervision with pre-programmed activities. A daytime camp may be sufficient. Is your child ready for an overnight camp?Worry about homesickness sometimes pre-vents parents from signing their child up for overnight camp. Homesickness refers to the distress caused by separation from home and special people (e.g., parents). Most children miss something about home when they are away at camp. Therefore, homesick feelings are normal! Prevention strategies help to lower the chance that your child will experience extreme homesickness:• Involve children in the decision to spend

time away from home, as it gives them a sense of control

• Talk to your children before going to camp, and let them know that feelings of homesickness are normal

• Teach your child effective coping strategies to manage homesickness when at camp (see below)

• Practice being away from home before camp (e.g., visit grandparents for 2 nights)

• Learn about the camp before going • DON’T agree to pick up your child early

if they are homesick! If your child is at camp and having difficulty managing homesickness, they could use the C.A.M.P. plan to cope:C heck your feelings: Are you feeling fearful, sad, and/or lonely? Is your heart pounding fast? Do you have butterflies in your tummy? Recognize these symptoms as signs of homesickness. A nticipating bad things? Identify the thoughts that are getting in the way. You may be thinking, “No one is going to like me.” “My parents will have fun without me.” “I won’t be able to sleep.” These thoughts maintain homesick feelings! M ake a plan: Come up with effective ways to think and behave in order to cope. For example, you could think “Homesickness is normal! Everyone else probably feels this way.” “I’m only away from home for one-week. That’s not so bad.” Think about the good side of things (e.g., swimming, new friends). Helpful behaviours include doing fun activi-ties (e.g., swim, crafts, bonfires), making a new friend, writing a letter home or drawing a picture of your family. P raise yourself: Don’t forget to praise and reward yourself for effectively coping with homesickness. For example, have an extra dessert; tell yourself “I did a good job!”Have a great summer!

Summer is here and everyone is home! Juggling summer fun and still having a clean and organized home can be

impossible. However, if everyone works together, you still can have fun and still keep your sanity!Create individual daily lists for each child. Don’t underestimate their abilities! Everychild, at any age, can contribute to household tasks. Children and teenagers need tofeel that they are making a contribution in some way. Small children especially thriveon being able to help out. Offer lots of praise and rewards. Rewards could simply be,“OK, the house is tidy, now we can go to the park!” For older kids, it could be offering money to go out and enjoy the day with friends or a drive to go get them where they want to go.AGES 3 to 5• Put toys away• Place crayons/papers in storage bin

Water Balloon Ball Room Here’s some great summer time kids entertainment. Entertain kids by filling a kiddie pool with water balloons. It’s not free but it will only cost you a pack of inexpensive water balloons from the dollar store and the kids summer pool they probably already have. Join kids for an entertaining summer fun splash down of your own. If you’ve got little ones in the pool, be sure to keep a close eye on “busted balloons” and remove them from their reach to avoid choking.

Library Books Take kids for a once a week trip to the library. Entertaining kids after a long day in the summer sun can be a challenge. Let kids pick out a stack of books each week for free at the library. Kids may even fall asleep to the entertaining antics of their favorite fiction characters and give you a summer afternoon break.

Body PaintMake entertaining finger paint for kids. Mix ½ cup cornstarch with 2 cups cold water. Separate into 6 plastic lidded margarine tubs. Stir a few drops of food coloring into each one. For great summer fun, let kids paint their entire bodies with this budget finger paint. Watching kids rinse off in the sprinklers can be entertaining summer fun for parents!

Old Fashioned Races Mark off the yard and say go! Kids find racing very entertaining. Set up your own field days for summer fun. Pillowcases serve as sacks for sack races. Hardboiled eggs on spoons for egg races. Budget dollar store jump ropes are great for entertaining tug of war games. Chances are modern kids will love these old fashioned summer Olympic games.

ARE WE THERE YET?

Give your kids an opportunity to have their own copy of a map of where you are going. Show them how far you

have come, how much further there is to go and let them mark it with a crayon. Every time they ask “How much further?” have them take out their map and see for them-selves. You might also like to get a compass and show them how it works along with the map. You can buy kid’s travel maps and travel guides , or for more fun, you can also print driving directions from any mapping website such as mapquest.Draw Your Own “Map” Draw your own that has the major stops and cities, and a nice happy drawing for your final destination. Throw in a few simple drawings of landmarks you’ll see along the way, such as a big bridge you’ll or a mountain tunnel. A home made map is easy for kids to follow and gives them a clearer picture of how much further there is to go. If your kids are old enough and it’s a trip that you take frequently, have the kids make their own map!Licence Plate game Before you leave, make a list of all the Prov-inces /States. Along the trip check off all the

plates you see. The first one to check off all theirs is the winner. This can be done as a family or as a competition.Virtual Hide & Seek Pick a place inside your house to hide, and imagine you are there. You can be any size, so you can hide in the silverware drawer, inside the toilet, in the dryer, wherever you can imagine! The others ask yes/no questions only, ie “are you in the kitchen” until they narrow it down to the room, area and then....find you! Kids love this game because it’s so fun to hide in places you’d not really fit into. You may have to clarify no hiding between walls and in plumbing!Counting Game Count blue vans, or count red cars, find 10 horses, count signs, billboards, police cars. Count water towers. How many people pass you on the highway? – count them too!Don’t Forget The Words! Have the radio on to a station that plays familiar songs. The person in the passenger seat is in charge. Everyone sings along. At any given moment, the radio volume is turned off and the person who continues the lyrics is the winner.

The car is packed, the tank is full! You start the car and set out on what you hope will be a peaceful journey filled with hours of family bonding. Lets be real! This only lasts until you are out of the driveway! Here are some tips that may help ward off the dreaded question... Are we there yet?

One of a parent’s worst nightmares is to not be able to provide

for their family. Even more daunting is the idea of fall-ing victim to an illness that prevents you from doing so. Milton resident, Mike Box knows this reality all to well. In August 2011, the father of two was diagnosed with a very rare strain of Non-Hodgkinis Lymphoma. This pre-vented him from working and undoubtedly had a profound effect on his family emotionally and financially. He battled and won that fight. Gratefully, Mike was able to return to work in August 2012.

Unfortunately, his return to work was short lived. In October 2012, the cancer returned. He is currently unable to work and has been with reduced income. When his blood counts are low, his Doctor prescribes Neupogen. This is a pill that is required once a day for 10 days. They come at a cost of $400 each. Unfortunately, Mike’s employee benefits only covers a small fraction of that.

As a community, it is our responsibility to reach out in any small way we can. Mike’ssister Vanessa has played a integral part in heading up several fundraiser’s for herbrother and his family. In her latest effort, she is asking all Miltonians to come out to

The Milton Italian Club on June 22, 2013 for a BBQ Fundraiser. It will be filled withgreat family fun, including live bands, great food, and great prizes!

If you are unable to attend, a support ticket can be purchased for $10 for a chance to win a 50” flat screen TV!

During his phone interview with Family Matters in Milton, Mike mentions his gratitude for his sister Vanessa, “She has done so much for us and I am so happy with everything she has done for me!”

Mike would also like to express his thanks to his 9 year old son Hayden Box, Hayden has managed to raise over $2000 collecting beer bottles and wine bottles. He will be presenting the Canadian Cancer society with a cheque at the event on June 22!
