Family Medicine Residency Program

Page 2: Family Medicine Residency Program

We believe the family doctor will be the central figure in healthcare delivery for years to come. That’s why everyone at the Ascension St. Vincent’s Family Medicine Residency Program believes preparing family doctors for their future roles is absolutely critical.

Our residents provide healthcare services to families of varying socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds, giving them the experience they will need to meet the challenges of family practice.

Our commitment is to deliver an educational experience tailored to our residents’ individual needs, yet comprehensive enough to make sure they become experts in family medicine and caring members of their communities.

The Ascension St. Vincent’s Family Medicine Residency Program exists for two reasons — to provide superior education and training for family prac tice residents, and to give our patients the best possible medical care. We prepare our residents to succeed in the practice locations they will eventually choose, from urban to rural, and to be ready for leadership roles in their communities. Ascension St. Vincent’s has graduated skilled, successful, compassionate doctors since the program began in 1972. I believe the key to our success is the commitment of our faculty and staff to excellence in education and patient care. The faculty members devote substantial time to enhancing their own teaching skills, and are dedicated to helping residents grow professionally and personally into fine family doctors.

The residency program benefits from affiliations with Wolfson Children’s Hospital, Florida State University College of Medicine, and Nova Southeastern College of Osteopathic Medicine. In addition to family physician faculty, the program has full-time faculty in pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, and clinical psychology.

You are about to make a decision that will influence the rest of your life. I hope this information about our program will help you discover the atmosphere of teamwork and professionalism we strive to create. I invite you to consider training at Ascension St. Vincent’s Family Medicine Residency Program.

Our philosophy

Northeast Florida is home to 1.6 million residents, and its main hub — Jacksonville — is the largest city in land mass area in the contiguous United States. The River City, as locals call it, offers a prosperous, yet affordable setting for residents to enjoy. Experience the culture of our city at area museums, theaters, our symphony, new amphitheater and the outdoor arts markets. Jacksonville is a great place for sports fans. The River City is home to:

• The NFL’s Jacksonville Jaguars

• The Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp minor league baseball team

• The Sharks, an indoor arena football team

• The Giants, a minor league basketball team

• The Armada, a professional soccer team

• The Icemen, a minor league hockey team

If you like water, you’ll love the River City. The St. Johns River provides Jacksonville with a unique, natural system of waterways and inlets, all leading to the Atlantic Ocean. In total, the city has more than 50 miles of white sandy beaches. In addition, Jacksonville is home to the Intracoastal Waterway. All of these waterways provide ample opportunity for sun worshipping, boating and swimming.

For foodies and shoppers, Riverside, Avondale, San Marco, and St. Johns Town Center are meccas for dining, shopping and night life.

Just down the road, residents can enjoy St. Augustine’s historic district, and within a two-hour drive you will find Orlando theme parks like Walt Disney World, EPCOT and Universal Studios. The area delivers a comfortable climate with mild winters, a pleasant spring and fall, and warm, sunny summers. And, in spite of its growth, Jacksonville has held onto its charm and Southern hospitality.

Call it Florida’s First Coast. Call it the River City. Call it home.

Ascension St. Vincent’s Family Medicine Residency Program was established in 1972 and accepts 10 residents per year for the three-year program. The residency is accredited by the Family Medicine Residency Review Committee of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education. The program has also been awarded Osteopathic Recognition accreditation by the ACGME. The program encourages residents to pursue an optional area of concentration (AOC) during the last two years of the program, allowing the development of advanced skills in an area of particular interest to the resident and valuable to their future careers. Advanced obstetrics, sports medicine, palliative/hospice medicine, and hospital medicine are some examples of completed AOCs.

The Family Medicine Residency Program is part of Ascension St. Vincent’s, which was founded by the Daughters of Charity in 1916. Ascension St. Vincent’s is a member of Ascension, which is the nation’s largest nonprofit Catholic health system. Today Ascension St. Vincent’s consists of three hospitals (Riverside, Southside and Clay County), urgent care centers, ambulatory centers and a medical group of over 400 providers in primary care and specialty care practices.

The program emphasizes continuity and full-spectrum care, and is designed to develop critical clinical skills and decision-making abilities. The residency embraces evidence-based medicine and has had a fully implemented EMR since 2006. The program is staffed by 15 full-time faculty doctors who are dedicated to resident education. This faculty includes family doctors with areas of special interest, such as obstetrics, manual therapy, geriatrics, practice management, sports medicine, nutrition, medical informatics and hospital medicine as well as specialists boarded in pediatrics, clinical psychology, obstetrics and gynecology. This unique blend allows for comprehensive training and development of the personal interests of residents. Extra training in obstetrics and perinatology is available through the OB track area of concentration. Required subspecialty and elective rotations can be completed with a wide variety of specialists at Ascension St. Vincent’s Riverside and other area hospitals that are also dedicated to the education of family doctors.

For residents with interest in fellowship training, the program has consistently had matches with residents’ first choice of fellowship position. Graduates have completed fellowships in women’s health/obstetrics, sports medicine, sleep medicine, faculty development, geriatrics, and hospice/palliative medicine. In 2019, the Ascension St. Vincent’s Sports Medicine Fellowship was accredited by the ACGME and accepts up to two fellows annually.

MedicineThe medicine rotations are designed to teach residents how to maintain continuity of care for their patients. Residents learn how to interact with consultants, organize care and serve as patient advocates. Our inpatient team consists of a PGY3 chief, a PGY2 and two PGY1 residents under supervision of family doctor faculty. There are over 2,000 admissions per year.

OB/GYNResidents follow Family Medicine Center obstetrical patients through prenatal, delivery and postpartum periods under faculty supervision. The practice averages nearly 400 deliveries annually. The faculty includes board-certified OB/GYNs, OB fellowship-trained family doctors and family doctors who include obstetrics in their practice. An OB track elective is available for residents who desire extra training and experience in obstetrics.

PediatricsThe rotation will be spent with a board-certified pediatrician who is faculty skilled in pediatric care, caring for newborn nursery patients as well as full scope general pediatric care in the Family Medicine Center. There are also rotations on the pediatric service at Wolfson Children’s Hospital and the pediatric emergency room.

GeriatricsThis rotation focuses on the healthcare of elderly people and teaching residents how to promote health by preventing and treating diseases and disabilities in older adults. Residents will work closely with rehabilitation and long-term care patients at St. Catherine Labouré Place.

Community Medicine/Community Health OutreachThe goal of this rotation is for residents to understand all the effects of social, cultural and economical influences on their patients’ lives. This focus continues throughout the program as residents participate in a variety of community activities. As a PGY3 the residents take a leadership role in providing services at a community outreach clinic and our Mobile Health Unit.
