Announcing the launch of the UIC DFM Residency Global Community Health Track (GCHT). The Goal of the Global Community Health Track is to "enhance the resident's ability to address health disparities wherever they may ex- ist." Hence, the GCHT curriculum is a unique opportunity for resident physicians to expand their perspective on Global Health Dispari- ties. In addition, a mantra of the GCHT is "Domestic is Global, Too". We would like for our residents to apply a global focus and consid- eration in all situations, wherever they may be practicing. This, we feel, will help the resident physicians develop the perception, insight, and practical skills necessary for them to be excellent clinicians and patient advocates. We take an in-depth look, through a longitudinal track spanning the second and third years, at issues surrounding community health and, specifically, health disparities. We offer mentorship, support, and guidance in the broad discipline of global health for our resident scholars to develop a Cynosure Project (focus topic project) that interests them personally and professionally. This longitudinal project spans our resident scholars' Community Medicine and scholarship activities. Our scholars, as well, have ample opportunity to develop presentations, attend conferences, and experience global community health through an international experience. The track is directed by Andrew Dykens, MD, MPH, and the working group is comprised of Mark Potter, MD; Nipa Shah, MD; Karen Connell, MS; Memoona Hasnain, MD, MHPE, PhD; Maureen Gecht, MPH; and Abbas Hyderi, MD, MPH. CONGRATULATIONS GRADUATES !!

Every year at the end of June we bid farewell to a group of people who have become part of our family. With every graduating class, we wish them well and send them on their way with the knowledge and confidence necessary to be fine young physicians. The 2009 Graduation Celebration was held at La Luce on June 27, 2009. With an overwhelming turnout to celebrate the achievements of the graduating seniors and the faculty and staff who contributed greatly to their education, the day was one to remember. The faculty and staff

honorees of the day included:

Mary Callis, MD Medical School: University of Utah School of Medicine I enjoyed being an intern so much; I decided to do it again! Well, not quite. After struggling with the deci-sion to choose between OB/Gyne and Family Medicine I chose to pursue OB/Gyne. Shortly after beginning my intern year in New York, I realized I missed doing adult medicine and pediatrics and decided to make the switch to Family Medicine. I moved to Chicago along with my partner, a psychiatry resident at U of C. I chose the UIC Family Medicine Residency program because it is very focused on education and professional development. Outside of work I am a long distance bike tour enthusiast who has biked the California coast,

and done tours from Brooklyn, NY to Burlington, VT and from Telluride, Colorado to Moab, Utah.

Ashish Ansal, MD Medical School: Ross University School of Medicine

Having attended UIC for my undergraduate education, I am excited to return to the UIC family. I chose the UIC Family Medicine Residency Program because it offers the opportunity to receive training in an underserved population setting and complete courses toward my MPH. I never leave home without my iphone or my gym shoes. My favorite Chicago hangout is the 24-hour Starbucks on North & Wells. And my favorite thing about being a resident at UIC is being surrounded by residents and attendings in every

specialty, who are enthusiastic about teaching.

Sofia Adawy, MD Medical School: UIC A Chicago girl through and through, I completed medical school at UIC and call the Windy City my home-town. As a student here, I had an incredible experience with the faculty and staff in the Family Medicine department and wanted to continue my education with them. Two things I never leave home without are my blackberry and sunglasses. The strong sense of community and the supportive department are the two things I like best about being a UIC Family Medicine Resident. Outside of work I enjoy visiting Chicago's awesome brunch places, shopping downtown and seeing shows at Second City. I realized I wanted to be-

come a Family Medicine physician during my 3rd year rotation at Mile Square Health Center, one of our residency program’s two

continuity clinic sites and a Federally Qualified Health Center.

Nathan McLaughlin, MD Medical School: Medical College of Virginia I grew up in California, attended medical school in Virginia, and am now smack dab in the middle of the country for residency. I chose the UIC Family Medicine program for the opportunity to train at Miles Square Health Center and because of the passionate, dedicated faculty. I knew for a long time I wanted to be a Family Medicine physician, but the decision was reinforced during medical school. I never leave home without my CTA pass or my sunglasses. When I’m not working, you can find me

exploring bars throughout Chicago in search of good beer and brewing my own beer at home.

Mydhili Moorthie, MD Medical School: Mohankumaramangalam Medical College, India

I have been a member of the UIC Family Medicine family for a number of years. I worked extensively with Dr. Emily Godfrey on a Reproductive Health Education in Family Medicine grant while completing my MPH studies here at UIC. This year I took on two new roles in my life, resident and mother. I am originally from the state of Tamil Nadu, India, but moved to Chicago in 2004 with my husband and I now call Chicago home. My clinical interests include women's health and clinical research. Outside of work I

enjoy running, biking, and spending family time with my husband and baby girl.

Magdaline Piatek, MD Medical School: Jagiellonian University, Krakow Poland

I knew I wanted to be a Family Medicine physician during my 4th year of medical school after rotating through many different specialties. I chose the UIC Family Medicine Residency Program because of the edu-cational and international opportunities the program offers. I was looking for a University based program with a diverse patient population. I never leave home without my chapstick or phone and enjoy traveling

and spending time with family and friends.

"The annual residency retreat was held July 29, 2009. It was a fun half day of team building and fun activities including

lunch, whirlyball and laser tag. We missed those of you who were unable to make it". Abbas Hyderi, MD, MPH

Paulette Grey, MD Medical School: Johns Hopkins

A Baton Rouge, Louisiana native, I joined the UIC Family Medicine Residency Program as a PGY2. I am a Johns Hopkins alum who chose the UIC Family Medicine Residency Program because it has the best combination of primary care and academic training in Chicago. My favorite outdoor activity is running

or biking along the lake. My hidden talent is that I am an amateur singer.
